Folder names opt at root level

May I safely delete a folder named opt, which has suddenly appeared in the root level of my drive?
I know it is required by some open source applications (VPNs, for example), but I don't recall installing any software that placed it there.
None of my hidden folders (etc, tmp, var) is visible, so I presume that OS X does not require it.
... or does it?

You are correct, OS X does not require that software, only some third party software. It's perfectly safe to delete it.

  • Searching for a folder in document library doesn't work properly if the folder is at the root level.

    Hi,
I have a folder named FS0 on my sharepoint 2013 site. The folder is the first level folder under
Default Document library (Shared Documents). When I search for FS0 on the sharepoint site, the search result give a link to home.aspx and not the folder. If I search for any folder that is a second level folder in the library, I get a search result that takes
me inside the folder on clicking it. In my case, I search for a folder named FS1 which directly under FS0. The search result takes me inside FS1 in this case. How can I make the search result display proper links for root level folders also?<o:p></o:p>
    Thanks
    Pranava

    Hi Pranava,
I couldn't reproduce this issue, when I create root folder FS0 in "Shared Documents" and start a full crawl, I click the FS0 link from search results page, it will open the FS0 folder as well as folder under FS0.
Please right-click the FS0 name hyperlink (e.g. mine is http://sp/Shared%20Documents/FS0) and paste in IE browser see if it could be accessed successfully.
Also test if other Shared Documents have this issue in other site collection or web applications, if not, run a full crawl may do a trick (please reset search index if only full crawl still doesn't work).
    Thanks

  • Bad idea to create new folders at the root level?

I have several clients who have been Mac user's since OS 8 and even earlier. When they transitioned to OS X they did not learn to use their local home folder properly and they continue to maintain a very cluttered folder structure at the root level of their hard drive. I believe one advantage they probably find is when sharing files the files are easy for other network users to find when they log on to each other's computers. But, I thought I read somewhere at one time that this was bad practice. Can anyone point me to a good article which explains the OS X file system that I can give these people to read? Or, am I worrying about nothing? I'm setting up an OS X Server for them so they can use Time Machine to backup - will the time machine backups contain all of these files and folders stored outside each user's folder?

I can't answer the first part, but yes, Time Machine will back-up the entire system (other than some specific system files, caches, logs, trash, etc.), unless they're specifically excluded via TM > Options (I suspect you wanted a different answer -- sorry).

  • Why do I need Library at root level AND a library in the admin user folder?

I have three user accounts in my macbook, I share it with two brothers. I'm the "administrator". Under my user account there is a library folder, same as with the other two users. But I also have a library folder at the root level when I open the "Macintosh HD" icon on the desktop. I notice that both the library at my user folder and the one in the root folder have items that have been updated recently.
While I noticed that the individual user libraries are "normal" in size, the one at the root level is 11 GB.
Why do I need the library at the root level? Can I consolidate that with the Library in my user folder?
    Thanks!

Why do I need the library at the root level?
For items which apply to all user accounts.
Can I consolidate that with the Library in my user folder?
    No.

  • Unable to properly create new folder at the root level of exchange account

Using the latest version of Mail in OS 10.6 with an exchange server. Creating a subfolder within existing folders works perfectly. However, if I try to create a new folder at the very first level of hierarchy (directly under the inbox, not within an existing folder) it will not be created in the same location as my other folders. What will happen is, the folder will be created at the very bottom of all of my mail folders in an area that is labeled with the name of my exchange mailbox. This will be an area that only has folders that I created from within Mail on the Exchange server. All other exchange folder will be seen in the "Mailboxes" area directly underneath the exchange inbox.
FYI if I go into my exchange mailbox in a web browser and create a new folder directly underneath the inbox and then sync Mail for OS X, the folder will appear in the appropriate area. The issue only occurs when creating a new folder under the Inbox from within Mail.
Any solution here? My office is thinking of switching more computers from windows to mac, but we all run on Exchange and a glaring bug like this would make me think twice about rolling over to Mac for our office.

  • Viewing only files at the root level in a folder?

Funny, John. LR's pretty intuitive, but it continues in the Photoshop tradition of a thousand things up its sleeves, if only you know where to look. I guess I was feeling helpful last night. I'll work on suppressing that :)

  • Creating a new "root level" folder in Infoview

In Infoview (XI 3.1 SP6), does anyone know if it is possible (and how) to create a new "root level" folder, to add to the existing ones that are already there?
At the root level, is "My favorites", "Inbox" and "Public Documents".  I've been asked to create a new folder at that level called "Team Space" so that people can store WebI documents in a folder structure, keeping them out of the general "Public Documents" folder.  I know that we can hide folders from groups etc, but I've been asked whether it's possible to do this.
This is a mocked-up image of what they'd like it to look like, so if you have any great ideas or suggestions, i'd love to hear them!

    Hi Adrian ,
You cant create multiple root folders , the Public folder is the ultimate root folder in BO .

  • Get the root folder name once user will upload any files to subfolder with in this root folder using sharepoint designer WF??

    Hi,
How to get the root folder name using sharepoint designer WF? i have a document library with root folders and subfolders. so i am trying to get the root specific root folder name attaching with email once user will
upload any files to subfolders within that root folder.
    Thanks in advanced!

    Hi,
According to your description, you might want to get the root folder name in SharePoint Designer Workflow when there is file uploading.
The “Path” field of the current item holds the relative path of a file, as a workaround, you can retrieve the value of the “Path” as string, then split the string
value with a delimiter character of “/” to meet your requirement.
In SharePoint Designer 2010, there is no OOTB action to split the string. You can use the custom workflow actions below to achieve it.
Here is a link about the related actions I use in this scenario:
    https://spdwfstringactions.codeplex.com/
    Settings of workflow as below:
It works well in my environment:

  • Home folder name change, cannot see enable the root user option

Hi I am using Mac OS X (10.6.8)..got it from others.. I would like to change the home (small home symbol in finder) folder name. Went through many discussion in apple support. My problem is, I am unable to enable the root user.  I went through the following steps: Apple menu -System Preferences- Accounts- authenticated as an administrator account- Login Options- Join- Open Directory Utility- Directory Utility window- administrator account name and password, then clicked OK. After this I can not see option with name Enable root user ( I can see only Active directory, BSD flat file and NIS, LDAPv3, Local). If I click active directory then the edit section will be activated. If I click edit, its showing active directory domain). I can not understand this.
Can anybody help me out please..
    Thank you in advance

Here are the instructions from Apple on changing user short name or home directory name. I've used this on a couple of used MacBooks I've bought on eBay. And remember to go into System Preferences>Sharing and change the Computer Name in there.

  • How to display 2 level folder names in the application navigator?

We have our source code in the following structure.
    C:\somefolder\project\java\all_the_java_code_under_this_folder
    C:\somefolder\project\sample\java\all_the_sample_java_code_under_this_folder
In the project content, I select C:\somefolder\project folder so that the code under java folder and sample\java folder are picked up. But In the Application navigator, I would like to see the folder names (java or sample\java) so that I know which files I am working with. The package names could be the same, so I cannot identify files based on packages. The application navigator will display only the last part of the folder name (in this case, it is java). This is useless for me, because that part is the same as you can see from above.
Is there a work around for this problem, so that it is easier to navigate between files.

At the top of the application navigator play with the folder icon and with the number next to it, and see how they effect the display.
You can also try the system navigator as an alternative view instead of the application navigator.

  • Looking up Admin Folder ID based on folder name

I need to lookup the folder ID based on the name, regardless of which level of parent folder it resides on. I can't seem to do this using an object manager. What's the easiet way to accomplish this regardless of the admin folder level? I'd really appreciate any sample code.

get an IPTAdminCatalog object from IPTSession:
    IPTSession.GetAdminCatalog()
then get the root folder off IPTAdminCatalog:
    IPTAdminCatalog. GetRootAdminFolder()
then call IPTAdminFolder.QuerySubfolders() with an appropriate query filter limiting to a certain name.
    Here's the javadocs on QuerySubfolders():
    QuerySubfolders
    public IPTQueryResult QuerySubfolders(int lPropIDMask,
                                          int lDepth,
                                          int vOrderBy,
                                          int lSkipRows,
                                          int lMaxRows,
                                          java.lang.Object[][] vQueryFilter)
Queries the subfolders. This can be immediate (depth 0 or child depth 1).
        Parameters:
lPropIDMask - prop ids to query
            lDepth - 0 or 1
vOrderBy - can be an Object[][] with 2 columns and one row. The first column holds the property ID to order by, from PT_PROPIDS. The second column holds the order to order, from PT_ORDERBY_SETTINGS
lSkipRows - number of rows to skip at the beginning, or 0 for none
lMaxRows - maximum number of rows to return, or -1 for all
vQueryFilter - is a 2D array with 3 columns. The first column holds the property id, from PT_PROPIDS. The second column holds the operator, from PT_FILTEROPS. The third column holds the value to be matched.
        Returns:
            IPTQueryResult

  • Query to retrieve the 'My Favorites' sub folder names from InfoView

Please help me with the query which can get all the folder names present in 'My Favorites' in the InfoView, and also query to get all the folder names in 'Public Folders' for the current user?
    Thanks

To get all the folders under Public Folders accessible by current user:
    1. Logon as that user.
    2. Run the query: select * from ci_infoobjects where si_kind='folder' and si_parentid=0; This only returns the top level folders. To get the subfolders within these folders, you need to make a recursive call changing si_parentid. Si_parentid=0 stands for root, change it with SI_ID of folder for which you are trying to find subfolders. To run the query and get results the user may need some access at the root level ( not granted for a general user by default, granted only for administrator)
The folders or objects listed under My Favorites are contents of a user's favorite or personal folder and a user should have full access to it by default. To retrieve contents of that:
select si_id from ci_infoobjects where si_kind='favoritesfolder' and si_name='<user name>' which will give a User's favorite folder and SI_ID of it.
    then call:
Select * from ci_infoobjects where si_parentid=<SI_ID obtained from previous query>
will list all the top level objects, folders in a user's favorite folder.

    Hi RACES,
Based on your description, I'm afraid that it is not the correct forum for this issue, but maybe I could help you find a more appropriate forum.
If it is related to the Visual Studio Report Controls, you could select this forum:

But if it is the SSRS issue, maybe this forum would be better for you:

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!

Now my requirement is to change the folder which i have created before......

    Hi Dharani,
You can change the folder name using "Rename" option from the context menu of the folder. You can also change the name by selecting Folder -> Details->Actions->Rename.
