Folder Structure .... Extremely Upsetting

So ... do to this issue in the past with my MP3 player i sold my ipod and went to a zune ... but with a teenage daughter and her Christmas list here i am again ..
On my daughters computer she had approx. 150 albums and was really excited to get itunes installed and get a few more albums in there so she could get her new ipod touch up and running ...
So we get itunes installed with no problems and ripped her newer albums into her computer without any issues ... we of course made sure that the "DO NOT TOUCH MY STUFF" box was checked during install ...
So her albums are in and she would like a few off my computer so we get on the network copy the albums she wants from my computer .. open her music folder ... and WHAT THE F^&%^#%^#& did this god forsaken program do to her neat and organized music folder ... numerous albums are spread across numerous folders ... folders have been moved .. names changed .. it is a complete F'ing disaster ...
So my daughter and i spend close to 2 hours fixing what this as destroyed ... and now we are both scared to even open the damed program again ... as in the process of this we have found that this handy piece of software isn't even bright enough to watch your music folder for changes .... so now not only do we have the original mess but now there is duplicates of a bunch of albums ....
Now i figure that apple could not make such an inferior product so i assume ... when i had my iPod .. and now my daughters iPod ... i must be doing something wrong. So could someone please tell me how to do this so itunes does not completely screw over my daughters music collection even with the "DON"T TOUCH IT" option on ....
This for me has made me glad to be a Zune owner ... but doesn't help my poor daughter ... any help would be appreciated...

I personally love the itunes "Keep my Music Files Organized" option. I think it does a wonderful job, and it makes it really nice and easy to import songs. I did it the other way for years, but now its as simple as drag and drop and everything is neatly organized for me. It is a great feature.
It sounds like you turned it on, rather than off.
The only way iTunes would ever make a mess of that folder is if you had really poor info in the mp3 tags.
If you want to really have a nice structure, make sure the files are all tagged nice and neatly. Itunes uses all of that data to make your folder structure.
Lets say on 1 album you have Red Hot Chili Peppers in the artist field, and on the next album you have Red Hot chili Peppers in the artist field, you will end up with 2 folders for the band because of the spelling difference or case difference.
Best to make sure the tags are all good if you use that Keep music files organized feature of itunes. again its Check to turn off the feature.
It sounds like you dont want the feature on, and that is fine. A lot of folks do not like it for some reason, usually because they structure their folders by genre first, then artist then album.
iTunes does it by artist then album. no genre. Also people sometimes dont like their files moved from where they are. Sometimes folks like to leave their files where they are, but have itunes organize them for them. That also can be setup in the preference settings by changing where itunes stores the music files and turning on the keep organzied option.
I also use the Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library feature.
I find they're a huge time saver.
I'm not trying to convince you to use it, i swear Just trying to say that it is a useful tool and its always interesting when people absolutely hate it
What you want to do is...
IF you hate that feature...
go to your music folder (the XP or vista music folder, not where your mp3s are)
Go into the itunes folder, delete the library xml and library.itl
start itunes, go to the preferens and turn that stuff off.
Then import your music again. It wont touch them anymore.

Create an image / map of folder structure in Finder

Hi there,
I am reorganizing some data that I want to make available for others later on. In order to facilitate the transition for them it would be extremly helpful if I could create a map of the folder structure. I am thinking of something like a mindmap which shows a folder and then each subfolder underneath it. It doesn't need to show the actual files within those folders.
Is there any way to have something like that created automatically? Or maybe some software (freeware would be best of course).

How do I move photos in a Smart Collection and keep folder structure?

HI there I am on a trial of Lightroom and loving it so far. One seemingly simple task I would like to try out is moving all my RAW files (which are all mixed up with JPGs and PSDs to a new location and keep the current folder structure.
Currently I have files strcutured like this: <main disk>\<year>\<month>\<filename>.cr2 and I would like to move these to <different disk>\<year>\<month>\<filename>.cr2
The Export functions look as if they will put them all in to one big folder? Any ideas?

There are several approaches to this problem. You could do this via the Folders panel in LR. You can do just about everything in the Folders panel that you can do in Explorer or Finder. Just create folder and drag and drop.
Another way is to do this outside LR use Explorer (Windows) or FInder (Mac). after you're done then go back into LR and tell LR where to find the moved files. Depending on how many you have this could be a bit tedious.
Another method is to choose the files you want then Export them as a Catalog. When you do this be sure to include the option to export the negatives. Point the new catalog at you other drive. It will recreate the folder structure during the export. Then remove the images from your present catalog. Don't delete from disk just remove. Now import from catalog and choose the newly exported catalog. This time choose the option to add the files without moving them. Once you are sure everything is back and is fine you can use Explorer or Finder to go into your original file structure and delete the files that were moved to the new drive. Be careful to only choose the moved files. If you are separating the RAWs out this should be relatively easy.

How can I batch move files to the same folder structure in a different location?

I recently had an issue with my iTunes Library so I used the Organize Library feature to have iTunes organise my library. What happened was that it put all of my music in a folder called 'Music' on my external hard drive, whereas previously it was not in a folder at all, e.g.
BEFORE: External Hard Drive / Abba / Greatest Hits / Mama Mia.m4a
AFTER: External Hard Drive / Music / Abba / Greatest Hits / Mama Mia.m4a
I don't have any particular issue with the updated folder structure, except that I had copies of the artwork for each album in my album folders, and these weren't moved when the audio files were moved/consolidated/organised. So I need to find a way of moving all of the artwork to the new folders, e.g.
External Hard Drive / Abba / Greatest Hits / folder.jpg
needs to become:
External Hard Drive / Music / Abba / Greatest Hits / folder.jpg
I have to do this for 3,000+ albums, and I have multiple artwork files for some albums, so I am hoping that there is a way of doing this using a batch/automated method of some kind, but I haven't been able to turn up anything yet.
Can someone help with this?

You can make a smart playlist containing episodes of both series and play from that. Podcasts are linked together by the URL they are served from so merging ongoing series isn't really practical.

Hi. I am having trouble with the folder structure.

I import my pictures like probably most Lightroom users.
They go to:
Pictures / (Year) / (Subfolder name crated checking "Into Subfolder" during import)
Recently, after upgrading to Yosemite, when I import to this structure, Lightroom creates a folder visually outside it. Above, the "01_Sao_Paulo" folder should appear inside 2015 while "12_Atacama" and "12_Hasselblad" under 2014. The right folders were actually created when I check them in Finder.
And when I try to move the folders under the right folder structure, Lightroom recognizes that the folder already exists.
My question two questions are:
1. How do I make the folders appear correctly under the right folder structure?
2. How do I make Lightroom stop creating the folders outside the structure on my next imports?

Can Metadata be used to generate a view as the conventional folder drill-down?
I have a list with metadata for different projects, releases, content type etc and I would like to view them in folder structure with different hierarchies, i.e. using projects--> releases--> content-type as well as release --> projects --> content-type.

If your metadata is based on a hierarchical term set you could use ‘Metadata Navigation’.

How to make file folder structure from virtual folders

When i create a source distribution.. no matter what settings I try, the preview is always like this:
But I want the folder structure from the build to become as the virtual folder structure. is there any way of doing this without moving them by hand in the file explorer tab?

Unless you use auto-populating folders (which I don't like), the virtual folders are not meant to reflect the location on disk, so it certainly won't be automatic.
I don't have experience with source distribution, but other build types have the option of configuring destination folders in the Destinations category and then assigning these destinations to items in the projects (including virtual folders, which then takes all the elements inside it) either in the same category or in the one under it, I can't check. I expect that you can do the same in a source distribution.

How can I batch Save For Web and maintain a multilevel folder structure?

First... I am using an old version of Photoshop.... 6.0 to be exact. If your answer is to buy the newer versions, I respectfully say I know that's AN answer, but I'm looking for something that will work with my setup. The version we have works just fine for the very few things we need it for, and we use new versions of InDesign and Acrobat for all else.
So here's the challenge:
We have a weekly magazine featuring 1,200 plus photos of cars for sale, each saved in a folder named for the sales rep, week and day. I must maintain these folder structure throughout the process, as the files names are duplicated by cameras and across reps. So I cannot dump all batch converted pics into one single folder, yet I need to reduce the Quality setting which I find when completing a Save As in Photoshop.
So I want to batch convert all the photos in multiple folders, some 3 folders deep, all at once.... reduce to 8 inches across, change to 72dpi, and reduce the quality slider to 5, which creates a nice 60-90K file. BUT.... it wants to save all of them in a particular folder. I need to just overwrite the original file with the new smaller one.... or save the new small version into the same folder the big one is in, but have it work with the "include all sub-folders" option in batch.
A sample File system .... 4513 Photos - Color <day of week> (3 folders) - <disk number><rep>Color (20 folders) - actual photos.
After converting, we push up the final level of folder to our website and that organization allows us to use them there the way we need. The uploading to the site and batch functions are done 3 to 4 times per week.... on different days.
Is there a way to reduce the quality (compression) of the jpgs that does not require the creation of a new file in a particular folder, or is there a way to have the resulting file just drop back into the folders and subfolders during a batch function? I just can't figure this out!
As an alternative, what other programs might do this?

You should be able to just use the html output of the Export for Web function and, if the video's converted correctly, just swap the file names at the appropriate places. Have you tried renaming VisualHub's output to what the Export for Web html wants, then placing it in the proper location?
I'm not aware of a way to batch create the html files, but if I had to, I'd probably look at automator to see if I could figure out it's text manipulation options.

WEIRD! AVCHD folder structure saved on HD appears different in Mountain Lion?

I saved all my old SD card contents fully onto an external hard drive.
Since saving I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
Today I opened the saved SD cards to find that the folder structure had altered dramatically.
It appears to be simplified and the "Private" folder is no longer a folder but a QT type file which when double-clicked opens in QT Player.
All the clips appear to be there and capable of being used but everything is drastically different.
Any idea what has happened . . . . is it ML related?

There seems to be no way of importing AVCHD video without copying it.
When it's in the camera you need to copy it but if it's stored on a HD there is no need but you are given no choice.

Exchange 2007, Contacts and Calendar OK , Email only folder structure

Hi, as i was reading many different topics I found that many of them had mixed answers between Exchange 2003, Exchange 2003 and 2007. Because of this mess, i wanted to focus ONLY on *EXCHANGE 2007*. That´s been said...
I have configured my iPhone with the user/pass/domain/address/SSL-ON, the iPhone connects to exchange and syncronize correctly Contacts and Calendar but not the Email. Email just shows folder structure.
After this first failed attempt I installed the certificate (Unsigned according to iphone and contains "Root Certificate")... No Improvement
I contacted my IT department , they said that Activesync was supposedly ON in my user profile and that SSL was mandatory. They also said that they cannot start testing thoroughly because it would disroupt other users. They also argue that many users are using activesync service with no problem what-so-ever. However they incouraged me to keep looking for an answer.
I couldnt find an apple guide to configuration for Exchange 2007, the enterprise deployment guide is just to vague.

I don't think there will be a solution to this. Exchange 2003 just isn't supported.

SharePoint List Filter to narrow a folder structure

Hello,
The company I work for has a document library containing folders for each of their hundreds of clients. The current process now is to load all of the folders in alphabetical order in order so that the users can scroll through and find the correct client
relatively quickly. This takes longer than it should considering how many folders need to load.
I was trying to utilize the SharePoint List Filter to pull the Title column so the users could filter based on the name and we wouldn't need to pull all of the data each time the library was opened, but it seems that the title and name columns don't hold
their connection to the list. Each time I attempt to set the connections and then use the filter, I get the "This filter is not connected" error.
Is it possible to use this web part in this manner (or is there another web part that will work) or should I suggest moving to meta data instead of a folder structure if they want speed of use?

Based on your description, my understanding is that you want to you want filter the document library by the title column so that the users could filter based on the name and don’t need to pull all of the data each time the library was opened.
Refer to the following steps:
Open your document library-> choose Export to Excel->in excel, click insert PivotTable,
create a pivot table in Excel -> use Report filters
To filter the title column->save it and upload it to a document library
Then create a new page in SharePoint and add the Excel Web Access web part and configure it to display your workbook, (or you can add the Excel Web Access web part in your document library and configure it to display your workbook) Now
you can filter the document library by the title column.

Library creating a new duplicate folder structure

I am using 2.0 on a Mac. Recently I moved all my data files including photos and lightroom catalogs from an external to an internal drive on my MacPro and renamed the new drive with the same name as the external and changed the external name and it became a backup. Lightroom continued to work just fine, seeing all the images with no problem. If I do a "Show in Finder" it shows me them on the internal HD. However, when I import a new image or even import an image or folder that has previously been imported, LR brings it in within a new folder structure that uses the same hard drive name.
My actual hard drive folder structure for my data drive is something like HardDriveName/Graphics/Airshows/image.jpg with all my images in a Graphics folder and within that a series of folders and subfolders.
Previously if I imported a new folder, LR would show HardDriveName/NewFolder and I have several folders of imported images with that structure. It did not include the /Graphics folder because I never imported the entire Graphics folder. Now however, after importing a folder, LR created a new folder structure in the Library with a duplicate of the HardDriveName and it included /Graphics.
I went to the first folder structure and picked a small folder and made a change to an image to darken it a great deal. Then I imported the folder all over again and it imported it to the new folder structure but the dark version was not visible. I DO have automatically write xmp data checked.
If I right click on any image from either folder structure LR shows me the image within the same hard drive where my original are found.
I don't want to have two folder structures and apparently if I re-import all my images LR doesn't see the xmp data. I tried to tell RM to read the xmp data from the image I had changed after it came into the new folder but it did not show up. If I manually tell LR to Save Metadata to File for a folder in my original structure and then go to the same folder in the new structure that LR is showing and tell it to read metadata it will show up in the new folder. I have a folder with 32,000+ images and thousands of other images.
I would like LR to continue to bring images into my "old" folder structure but that may not be possible. Any help?
Interestingly I have more than one data drive. This problem does not seem to be happening with my other data drive that I also swapped to an internal configuration.

I spoke too soon. LR seems to be creating a new folder structure for two of my three hard drives and adding images properly to one of my three hard drives. All three were new drives with the names changed to match the old drives.

yes I did update camera raw. I think LR 2.0 asked for that. I did a search on "duplicate" and found no answer to my problem. Anyone with a link to any useful information?

Is there an app for creating a folder structure on the iPhone out there?

I'm looking for an application to create folders (possibly password-protect them) on the iPhone, so I can add documents, PDFs, video clips etc to the phone and create subdivide them further in folders. There doesn't seem to be anything that does the right job in the app store. Is it not possible? Any feedback to help me understand would be appreciated.

It is not possible. You cannot create the folder structure you're speaking of and you cannot save files to your iPhone, even if you had folders.
There are no apps for folders or app organization. There are apps that allow you to access files from your desktop or the cloud from your iPhone. I use box.net. Dropbox and AirShare are others.

How to change location of files (folder structure to storing in iPhoto lib)

I thought I was smart, but as is always the case, I find out that I am not
I did not trust iPhoto at first. So I retained my images in my 8 years of folder structure (by year and then subfolders of months).
My lib is getting large, 7000 plus images, and when importing images (I do not have the setting for imported images to be stored to iPhoto Lib) and wanting to delete some, I find it more work than is necessary.
Bottom line: Can someone tell me if there is a way to change the setting (of course there is) but also to reimport, or move, my images that are already in iPhoto (but are really just previews referencing to my folder structure) so that they will reside in the iPhoto Lib?
When I import it finds duplicates...if I say do not import then it does not go any further...but if I say "yes, import duplicates" then it brings them in as duplicates...which means I have two copies, but only one retains all of the keywords etc.
Another bottom line: I want to retain my keywords in my current library, but move all images into the iPhoto lib instead of my folder structure. I can do this from this date forward, but I want to get the entire lib to be this way.
