Folder turned into package

A problem started all of a sudden with no warning. Some of my folders started turning into packages, now in order to access them I have to show contents. Regular folders with working files no apps, the worst one is my User folder with my name has turned into a package.
Can someone tell me how to turn a package back into a folder.
N E E D help A.S.A.P. please!!!

It could be that the bundle bit got reset on the affected folders. If you have Developer Tools installed you can use GetFileInfo command in Terminal to find out. Here's an example:
NoobiX:~ francine$ GetFileInfo /Users/francine/Desktop/screens/
directory: "/Users/francine/Desktop/screens/"
attributes: avBstClinmed
created: 02/17/2007 11:18:19
modified: 06/20/2007 14:10:06
The capital "B" in the attributes means the bundle bit is set so the Finder treats the folder as a package. To change it back you use the SetFile command (also installed with Developer Tools):
NoobiX:~ francine$ SetFile -a b /Users/francine/Desktop/screens/
For additional information see an article I wrote on the related invisible bit being set problem:
http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
There's a link to download the two commands you need so you can use them without installing all of Developer tools.

  • Folder turned into a file. How can i change it back?

    Hi everyone !
    Please excuse my english
I had to transfer a Ableton Live Project from an office Mac to mine via Gmail.
Sadly when i downloaded it on my computer, it was a file.
    No more directory.
I tried textedit but there's NO text lines to edit... i tried UnRarX, and many other decompressors.
I would love to turn it back into a folder and workin' again.
    Thanks!
(My intuition led me to an issue from Gmail transforming the  " \ " to " / " so the folder isn't a folder anymore!
    Here's the poor guy :
(The directory contains some of these)
    Peace. Love. Jah.

Try transferring it again but this time zip/compress it before mailing.  Also include the extension on the file before compressing.

  • Folder turns into 0 kb Alias

One of my folders on my external WD hd is now inaccessible and now under "kind" is listed as an "Alias" even though I never created an alias or did anything to the folder.
I looked at a drive through a pc and it is a normal file with all the files inside. Is there a way to let my mac know it should actually be a folder file and not an alias?

I just posted a nearly identical question, David. Did you find a solution?

  • IMovie 09, project keeps getting turned into a folder

My girlfriend has been trying to make a movie in iMovie 09, and each time the project turns into a folder. When I go to look at it in the Project Library, it has a folder icon and the name of the project. When I open up the folder, it just has folders that say Proxies and Quicklook. She's worked on several different projects, but this is the only one that this keeps happening to. It's very frustrating because she loses all of her work and has to start over again from scratch each time! Any ideas?

    I found the cure!
    1. Move the folder that is your project to ~/Movies
    2. Add the .rcproject extension to the folder. This will make it a proper iMovie project bundle.
    It should look like ~/Movies/MyProject.rcproject
This worked for me like a charm!

  • Help! Convert iPhoto folder back into a package!

I had to have my cloud backup company send me back a hard disk containing my iphoto library because my local copy was corrupted. When I received it today, the iPhoto library came back as a folder. It has everything in it, but it's viewed as a folder, not a package. So when I double click it, it doesn't open iPhoto. It's just treated like a folder.
How do I make it back as a package?

I doubt if you'll be able to restore your library to working order.  Keith's suggestion is worth trying but I'm afraid that all of the links between image files and database files are damaged beyond repair.
The following will be able to get your photos back in a new library with the same event grouping as you had (but probably not the same Event names).
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library folder and locate the Masters or Originals folder.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Application has disappeared, turning into automator workflow

I usually can get to the bottom of a problem like this without any assistance, but this has me stymied.
In my applications folder, I've had and used for years, a Photoshop application pure and simple. But recently, when I tried to access it, I found that it always opened as an Automator workflow (having a reference to the Photoshop app). The Photoshop icon had been replaced with a workflow icon. Get Info on that workflow identifies it as the Photoshop application, with an appropriate size of some 50 MB.
I've used Automator a few times, but not for a long time, and I don't recollect having created a workflow referencing Photoshop. But I thought little of this, as I have two backups of the main
drive and an install disk for the Photoshop.
I did find the Photoshop application on both of the backups. I tried to copy those to the Applications Folder on the main drive, with the maddening result that the Photoshop app turned into an Automator workflow on all three drives!
Using the CD originally used to install Photoshop, I set out to re-install it. But the CD contents (which can't be changed) now show only the Automator workflow!
As the most recent step, I trashed Automator on one drive, but that made no difference whatsoever -- except now I get an Alert saying that the workflow file cannot be opened on this machine.
What on earth might be going on here?

Get Info on that workflow identifies it as the Photoshop application, with an appropriate size of some 50 MB.
Hmmm, my Adobe Photoshop CS3.app is 59.3MB inside the Package contents, but 217MB for the Package Adobe Photoshop CS3.app
I think you have some corruption, how much I don't know, but...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    Reset Launch Services...
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
    Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • I cannot break my java source into packages

I would like to convert my java source in my Creator project(s) to standard package naming conventions such as com.mycompany.myapp but I'm having difficulty. After renaming the package within the Java Sources folder, and making necessary related corrections in referencing Java source files and managed-beans.xml I still cannot get the application to run. The IDE is also losing the ability to render the JSP source as well due to a broken binding reference that is not kept in sync. In general is it possible to use packages in Creator where the java source files are in sub-directory packages? I happen to be using Windows 2000. But I can use other operating systems if it will work elsewhere.

    Hello Iwan.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find a clean workaround for implementing a multi-level package structure on an "existing" application.
I WAS able to do it eventually knowing the desired tree structure I needed to reach (as already noted), but it required a lot of hand editing as Creator appropriately cautions.
I even had to get into the private "project.prj" file eventually outside of creator in notepad to clean up my structure before I could finish.
Anyway, I want to repost my prior instructions for implementing package structures on NEW projects.
I found an error in yesterday's post and some misplaced words. This is a corrected version.
Also, this approach was not tested exhaustively - but I think it is probably close.
Again my environment happens to be running on Windows 2000.
Updated/corrected notes for building a new "packaged" Creator application.
    =====================================================================
It turns out you can avoid manual editing if you follow this sequence for new applications.
It is helpful to understand these concepts that steer our procedure:
    1) The "Web Pages" directory and "Java Sources" directory require synchronized directory trees to accomodate the mirror relationship between packaged *****.jsp and *****.java bean backing files.
    2) The "Web pages" directory tree will not display the highest-level node - it apparently shares/references the highest-level package node immediately under the Java Sources folder.
You will need to substitute your own names for package nodes as desired.
This example develops the package named "com.company.division.mypackage".
As such my project directory tree goal is:
    Project Navigator (Logical View)
    =========================
    MyProject
    -- Web Pages
---- Resources (ignore for this exercise)
    ---- company
    ------ division
    -------- webapplication1
    ---------- Page1.jsp
-- Page Navigation (ignore for this exercise)
-- Managed Beans (ignore for this exercise)
    -- Java Sources
    ---- com
    ------ company
    -------- division
    ---------- webapplication1
    ------------ ApplicationBean1.java
    ------------ Page1.java
    ------------ SessionBean1.java
+ Library References (ignore for this exercise)
+ Data Source References (ignore for this exercise)
Steps to repackage your application without manual editing:
    ==========================================================
    1) Create a new default application - in our case my case named WebApplication1:
Use any method you want to create a new project accepting all default naming.
You will get a project with 3 java beans (Application, Session, and Page) and Page1.jsp.
I had confusion because of names similar to WebApplication1 used for the Project, Context, Package, and Application.
The following two options decouple two of these names - that may or may not be helpful for you.
Optional: Rename project WebApplication1 to MyProject to avoid naming extension confusion:
Select the top/main folder in the Project Navigator and right click for context menu options
Select the Rename Project option, enter your desired name, and click OK
Please allow several seconds for the project refactoring to rebuild your directories
Optional: Rename project context from webapplication1 to URL context name appropriate for you:
Select the top/main folder in Project Navigator (Just named MyProject in the preceding example)
Enter your desired URL Context Path in the Properties window field and press Enter.
    2) Delete the Page1.jsp file and Page1.java file as follows:
Select the Page1.jsp or Page1.java file
Right click for a context menu and select the delete option
Accept/Acknowledge deletion of the synchronized counterpart bean/jsp
    3) Build your new Web Pages directory tree as shown above without a "com" folder:
Use either the context menu "New > Folder" or "New > Package" option - they both work
As shown we need to create a 3 level sub-folder: company, then division, then webapplication1
    4) Build your new Java Sources directory tree starting by renaming your package root:
In the Java Sources folder rename "WebApplication1" package to "com".
This is accomplished within the context menu accessed via right-click on your mouse.
Enter "com", press Ok, and then accept "Yes" to rename all package declaration references.
Enter "Ok" to acknowledge the need for warning about manual editing being necessary.
Use the context menu "New > Folder" or "New > Package" option - they both work
to create / add the remaining sub-directory folders within the newly named "com" folder.
As shown this is 3 more sub-folders: "company", then "division", then "webapplication1".
    5) Copy your Application Bean java file then delete it from the source:
Right-click on your ApplicationBean1 file and select copy.
    Select (left-click) the target Java Sources > com > company > division > webapplication1
folder and paste the file copy (Ctrl-v).
Now delete the original application bean source in the "com" folder with the delete key.
    6) Copy your Session Bean java file then delete it from the source:
Right-click on your SessionBean1 file and select copy.
    Select (left-click) the target Java Sources > com > company > division > webapplication1
and paste the file copy (Ctrl-v).
Now delete the original SessionBean1 source in the "com" folder with the delete key.
    6) Recreate your request Web Pages folder Page1.jsp - the java bean will be echoed:
    Left-click (select) the folder: Web Pages > company > division > webapplication1.
Right-click for a context menu and select New > Page and type "Page1" and press Enter.
You should see a new Page1.jsp file in Web Pages > company > division > webapplication1.
You should see a new Page1.java file in Java Sources > com > company > division > webapplication1.
You're ready to create code within your company's packaging structure!

    Craig Hunt

  • Using webmail in Mozilla Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows 8, original messages get turned into html code when I reply to or forward them. How can I fix this?

I have tried re-setting Firefox and working in Safe Mode, but the problem still recurs. I use Fastmail as my webmail server and never had this problem on Windows XP or Windows 7. When I reply to a message, the original message is turned into html code. The same happens when I forward a message.
My JavaScript is up to date, in case that's relevant. The Fastmail support team suggested the problem would be Firefox-related.
The other function of my Fastmail account that isn't working properly in Firefox 17.0.1. is the search function.
Do I need to get new plugins or something? I don't know where the HTML editor is in Firefox or if that's what's wrong.
    Regards,
    Rachel

Thanks for your reply, cor-el. Norton 360 came pre-installed on the laptop as part of the package I bought. I haven't changed the pre-set firewall or anti-virus settings. Should I change something?
I will try rebooting in Windows Safe mode as you say and report if that makes any difference.

  • I'm having trouble with popups on my mac book pro constantly along with words on every page that have turned into links. how do i fix this???

i have pop ups constantly from mackeeper and many other websites. i also have noticed that some words on all websites have turned into links... how do i fix the problem??

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How can I access data on an external drive in my mac after all folders have been turned into .lnk files? I am desperate!

I don't know what happened, I connected my external hd today and all files had been turned into that!

I know I am going to sound really stupid when I ask this, but how do I do that? There was this folder called Recycle Bin, which I have deleted already but the files are still in the same format. I know they are in the HD 'cause of the space taken up in it, but I would like to know exactly what to do to clear the malware altogether and have access to the stuff I have again.
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for being such a dummy

  • Had acrobat 8 instaled today i downloade a U torrent and suddenly acrobat turned into u torrent on all my adobe files .. went to open with clicked on acrobat and then it changed to Filemaker which ihave installed.. how can i get back to acrobat???? help

I originally had acrobat 7 in my machine when Adobe told me that they won't support it and gave me 8 by a direct download to my pc about 4 months ago.  Great worked fin today i uploaded U Torrent and suddenly all my acrobat files turned into U torrents so i clicked on open with and clicked on acrobat and now the files show filemaker Pro which i do have installed..  I need to get back to acrobat for my bills that i send out .. i am disabled and run a small business from home.. all my invoices are now corrupt can you help  please..

It sounds like you do not have a backup. You might consider a restore to before you installed the problem program. Can you open Acrobat by going to the Acrobat folder and clicking on Acrobat? If so, go to Help>Repair. After that, try the updates if you are not current. Hopefully that will resolve the problem. There is a chance that the program you downloaded as not a proper version and had a virus.

    Remove "Boom" and test.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Psd turn into JPEG prewiews after save for web. Help!

save for web>save>save optimised as>save>close. That gives me a jpeg (the previous was a psd), but in the form of a preview thumbnail, top right corner bent, loupe and "JPEG" on it. I did about 20 psd just fine, ending in the folder as jpg images, keeping their previous names  and the new  "jpeg" underneath. What happened?
Not less odd, as I was shrinking the folder window, (bring in the bottom right corner, but this is probably not related), all the previous ones (the jpeg images) turned into preview icons, too. By moving the cover flow, they turned back into images, and by moving them again, they turned back into jpeg
icons, this time, not with the loupe and the photos, but with 3 geometrical shapes on them. If I bring them back into Ps CS3 and save for web again, and then close, I get a "save changes to the jpeg document?" question,>save,  which gives me a regular save as window, and they stay images, and I could end the problem like that, but that might cancel the previous save for web. Help! goodnight now.

I guess I have been sending all along (my almost 2 years of photoshop) inflated pictures of images (which however I take the care of reducing to 1000
pixels from the original 4000 something that they originally are). What's odd for you guys, and normal for me, is that the computer went back to turning
out  "normal" .jpg images, in small characters, like it has been doing all along, as if it went on a freaky spree yesterday, and I will probably go along with it, just because i don't know how to provoke deliberatly the JPEG with the loupes which appeared breafly yesterday, and that I am supposed to expect.
I don't have any third party add on (do you mean plug in?) Only GF, sitting there, unused for a year.
Of course now i am intrigued: Marion: what do you mean by :"this may be affected by normal Finder settings" ? Any settings that i can control to get those JPEG with loupes that I should expect all the time?
Thanks everybody, i'll just leave the thread open for a bit in case somebody wants to shed some more light on my state of confusion.
