Folder w/exclamation and little lock

My daughter got an iPod 4th generation/color 20GB from my nephew. It worked for few months and started the problem with the folder and exclamation mark. I connected it in the computer (USB 2.0 and FireWire) and shows as a "Removable disk (E:)" In the iPod's screen shows a small little lock in the top left side, a battery in the top right side (fully charged), and "Do not disconnect" in the bottom. The iPod was set-up through my laptop. But I had to re-format my computer, so now I'm not able to format it and remove the "little lock" problem. I've tried everything suggested from the Apple site and this one. I've gone through Google, Yahoo to search in other sites, and no luck! The following are all the steps/procedures I've tried:
*All five "R's" - step by step
*Took it apart, removed hard drive, unplugged battery, etc.
*Reset hard drive
*Ran out battery
*Smacked it several times!!!!
*Unable to format through "My Computer"
*Tried to fix it in two of my computer (Dell desktop and laptop).
I also went to an Apple Store, but the technician was not able to fix it with a Mac computer after trying twice for five minutes in total. He just told me to get it repair through the Apple Service. Not very helpful. I don't think that there is a problem in the hard drive. Also, I noticed a noise coming from the hold/headset area.
I would appreciate any help since my daughter has been very miserable with out her iPod. She previously owned an mini-iPod but got stolen at school. She is not very happy having to go through the summer without her iPod.

OK... Check out this post which mentions a good chipset:

Here's some differing opinions on VIA chipsets:

Nothing definitive here... But it's a start. Google iPod with "via chipset"... Lots of hits.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

  • I moved my iTunes to an external hard drive and now everytime I try to access it I get the error "folder iTunes is on a locked disc..."

Help.  I moved my iTunes account (set up on a computer running on a school network) to an external drive, because I was out of network drive space.   I changed my iTunes shortcut to point to my external drive.  I am upable to pull music from a CD and copy it to the iTunes folder on the external drive.  But when I try to open iTunes or use a previosuly set up device I get the following error message... "The folder iTunes is on a locked disc or you do not have write permissions for this folder."  I have gone in and unchecked the read only on the folder and given my self all rights in my iTunes properties.  Still I can't get in, and iTunes will only open to the folder on the external, it won't even open the iTunes page so I can see what I have.  Help I need to be able to access those old files.

I thought I could just drag and drop my iTunes library to an external hard drive.
    it'll work ... if done properly ☞
copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on your Mac to the external, then launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
if I already have my iTunes going to the incorrect files how is it going to find the correct files again.
you could try if this script helps:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."
    Eric Ross wrote:
When you moved the file back did you go back into iTunes in your preferences and select the advance tab and then selected the location again or where your files are
the iTunes media folder location in preferences > advanced tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where your content currently is.

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.

I have a symbol on the top right hand corner and don't know what it is!! It's a little lock with a circle around it??  Help please???

It's Orientation Lock, which will kee the screen from rotating when you rotate the device.
It's accessible from Command Center- swipe up from the bottom of the screen.  You should see the icon to turn Orientation Lock on or off.

I have a sign of a little lock on the top of my iPhone 4 screen and therefore I am not able to hear from the people who call me unless that I switch the speaker on. What should I do

The little lock has nothing to do with speaker volume.  It means you have locked the rotation on your iPhone.
Have you tried using the volume control on the side of the iPhone to raise the volume when someone calls?

Do you have the "Green Arrow" icon on one of your toolbars? That usually will list your most recent downloads with a button to open the folder where they are saved.
If you don't have that, you can open the full download list using either:
    * Ctrl+j
    * Tools > Downloads
    * History > Show All History, then click Downloads in the left column
Can you find the download listed there and click the "Open Containing Folder" button?
Are you downloading Flash or Acrobat/Reader?
    For Flash try: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
For Acrobat/Reader, you may not need an update.
Firefox's plugin check site only recognizes the Adobe XI (11) series as current, but if you have checked for updates in your Adobe Reader X or Adobe Acrobat X product (Help > Check for Updates) then you do not need to update the plugin. For this older Reader/Acrobat version, please rely on Adobe for information on available updates and not the plugin check site.

My MacBook was stolen, and after a find my iphone erase instruction I got the erase started message, suppose all info on that computer was vanished.
I then bought a new MacBookPro. I has a TimeMachine back up but due to battery cutoff it was blocked and the time machine could not be accessed. I could however copy to my new computer the information.
question 1 - How do I initiate on my new computer using info that I have copied already on the hard drive to make it transfer as though it was from another computer...?
question 2 - When I try to open itunes i get the message "the folder itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write accessability to the folder...
I already downloaded the new itunes but even after that the message continues to appear.... what can I do to make itunes work back with my previous library...?

  • Ipod Nano won't start - folder w/exclamation point error message!

My Ipod Nano won't start! I got it about a year ago and whenever I try to turn it on, a folder with an exclamation point and the words, "www.apple.com/support/ipod" come up. I've tried to get it to work but it's not. I even tried looking in the help sections on apple.com and everything I found didn't help. My Ipod isn't frozen, I just can't get it to the menu screen. I really don't want ot have to reset my Ipod and have all my previous songs and pictures erased because I can't get them back. Does anybody have a possible solution to this problem? Please help.

I got a problem on running the iTune 64bit on Windows 7, error message says " the folder "itunes" is on a locked disk or your do not have write permission for this folder.    Any one ran into this problem ?
    It worked before.

Open Disk Utility via Spotlight or in the Applications folder stored within the Utilities folder. Close all applications and 3rd party software and choose "Repair Disk Permissions." Reboot the computer when finished, and test to see if the issue is resolved.
