Folders and duplicates everywhere; empty folders... a mess in the Library

I am tired of iPhoto's difficulty to use as soon as you modify pix and try to move pix from a computer to another.
It creates tones of duplicates files, empty folders and doesn't even recognize px it already imported.
I have the same pix floating everywhere.
THen i tried to delete some folders and files and some pix are now 'offline'.
Any trik other than don't mess with iPhoto, don't modify your pix and don't move them from one computer to the other one.

iPhoto is a database. Think of it this way. When you use iPhoto it's like hiring a filing clerk and giving them your shoe box full of photos. "Take these and sort them out so that when I ask for one, you can give it to me, and fast." So the Clerk sets up his filing structure, then goes home for the evening and you go into the filing cabinets and move things around. Next morning, it is any wonder that the Clerk can't find things?
So here's tip one: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
You do everything you need to do via the iPhoto Window - and the good news is that everything you need to do can be done from there. So, ignore the iPhoto Library Folder. There are no user serviceable parts in there.
Want to access a file: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.
Want to use a photo editor? You can set Photoshop (or any image editor)as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
FYI: This might explain how the iPhoto Library Folder is laid out: A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.

    Please  help

    Hi Nick ...
Try deleting the cache and reset ...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that doesn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist  (preferences)
    Quit Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari.
If it's working ok now, move that .plist  file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If you have trouble finding those files, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen, click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go

You have to make the changes you want in the folders on your computer, then sync your new choices via iTunes.  iPhone, iPad and iPod touch: Syncing photos via iTunes, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

    Hi cfgolf,
Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
    2. Transfer content
Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
    6. Set up as new
Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.
    Cheers,
    -Joe

You will be able to do copy & paste when 3.0 comes out this summer.
Or even better while the iPhone is connected to my PC can I view the address book on the iPhone and make changes using my PC keyboard?
No. You would make changes to the address book on your PC and then sync via iTunes.

  • Can I get rid of duplicate or empty folders in contacts without using a computer?

Is there a way to get rid of duplicate folders and empty folders in contacts without using a computer?

If you don't have iTunes you will need to buy the song from the iTunes store and download it that way. If it is a custom track you may be out of luck.  The only way to get a song on your device without iTunes involves jailbreaking it.
iOS is set up to prevent people from emailing each other songs, videos, movies, books, etc. This is how Apple got their contracts with the content providers by promising that they would do what ever it takes to prevent people from sharing content that they didn't pay for.

  • Folders on desktop vanishing/Empty folders not deleting

    Heyo, all
I've come across a wierdness on my Mac and I'm stumped as to how to deal with it.
I have a folder on my desktop that I can rename and move to the trash but that I cannot delete. It shows as empty in the Finder and via Terminal but still tells me that it is not empty and will not delete. Also, any time I put any thing into this folder it will vanish. It's still there if I look via terminal but does not display via Finder. It will show up if I reboot then vanishes again when I try and do anything with it. For example, if I open the folder, it will display an empty folder, then vanish.
At first it was just an annoyance but now another folder has taken on the same characteristics. I'm not sure of what is going on but this disturbs me, greatly.
I have tried applications that are supposed to force delete items but have failed to achieve success.
Any advice on how to get rid of these folders and restore the integrity of my desktop would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    V

Since you mentioned that you looked at it with the Terminal, I will take the liberty to respond with a Terminal solution.
Open the terminal and type the following:
    sudo rm -Rf ~/Desktop/<StrangeFolder>
and press enter. Of course, substitute the name of your strange folder(s) for "<StrangeFolder>".
This command will definitely remove those folders. Make sure you have it exactly right. This is one of those commands that will do exactly what you tell it. If typed incorrectly (such as with an extra space or something), it can and will remove your Desktop and entire home directory. Years ago I deleted (half) my home directory at work this way. Luckily, we had backups. You've been warned.

  • I've imported one folder with MXF files successfully, but cannot do it with the other two folders.  I fear I may have messed with the original naming.  How can I import the rest?

I shot footage with a rented Canon C300 (using their cards).  I transferred the footage to my laptop and I've been able to use log and transfer for the first folder of footage, but the remaining two folders of footage aren't being acknowledged as importable [it "contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."] is there an example of a valid structure that I could mirror to make log and transfer successful?

Look at the first folder for the proper file structure.  But it might not be as simple as folders and the order things are, you might be missing ancillary data...files that tie to the media files.  If you are, then L&T won't work, and your best bet is to get the Calibrated MXF software from divergentmedia.com  That will allow your computer to read the MXF files natively...to allow you to convert them to ProRes. (trying to work with those native might prove difficult).
I highly recommend tapeless offload software when shooting tapeless.  ShotPut Pro from imagineproducts.com is my favorite...works with just about every tapeless format.  What it does is copy the footage, and verify that everything has copied over...double checks everything. It also automates the process, will offload to multiple locations...  I swear by this software.

  • IPhoto 11 won't launch and crashes every time I try to rebuild the library. Urgh.

iPhoto 11 won't launch- it's another case of an infinite skinny wheel. I've tried rebuilding the library numerous times, each time it takes about a day and each time it crashes near the end. This is just ridiculous. Any tips folks?
APPLE if you can hear me... shouldn't you be testing this stuff prior to release? I know you do but I mean, like REALLY testing it? This is my second iPhoto upgrade disaster. The last time I lost my entire library, had to spend £80 on recovery software that recovered not only most of my photos, but every image cached on my machine. So then I had the fun of sorting through literally thousands of images...
And I only got the upgrade becasue my iPhone is refusing to sync, freezing on the iPhoto bit. Gah.

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I have updated iTunes on my computer and my iPod nano 4 is up to date but not all music shows up in my iTunes library..only the purchased songs..what happened and how do I get them back into the library?

The music library in the updated version of iTunes is grossly incomplete although the music still remains on my iPod. Why did this happen and how do I get the music back into the library?

    Hi Dalegu219,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iTunes library is on an external hard drive, but iTunes is not recognizing the library, first make sure the right library is selected.
You can use these steps to make sure iTunes is opening the library on your external drive:
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
Pick Choose Library and locate the library on your external hard drive.
    From:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support
If the right library is selected, but you do not see your songs, try re-creating the library using the instructions found here:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - Apple Support
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • I cannot access my folders and when I click on Finder, it says "the application Finder cannot be opened" then a number 10810. HELP!

After shutting down and rebooting, I find I have no folders on display on the desktop and when I click on the Finder icon, a message comes up that says "the application Finder cannot be opened" followed by the number 10810. HELP!

You could do it by cloning.  I have read OSX installations of a single version can be machine specific too, so even if this were a Tiger compatible drive a clone might not work.  I haven't seen anybody actually state a specific case where they had problems on a machine compatible with the OS version because of this though.  The last  case I can recall of system specific installations was back in OS7 days with system enablers.   I have moved Tiger between machines by moving the drive with no problems, but the machines were pretty similar models (both Quicksilver, just a year difference production model).

  • Just upgraded to Lion (uggghh); lost mail; was able to get it to work, but lost folders and messages in those folders; any way to recover?

I was able to get mail working again, but when it rebuilt everything, I essentially lost all of my archived messages in my folders.  Is there a way to get this back while still staying on Lion?  The only answers I've seen are taking mail back down to Snow Leopard.
If the answer to the first question is no, is there a way to downgrade the OS back to Snow Leopard and then I could (hopefully) restore from my Time Machine back-up?

What do you mean you "essentially" lost all archived messages?  What exactly happened?
You can try restoring specific mailboxes/messages from your Time Machine backups.

  • Folders and files are not set as links inside the ConsumerExplorer KM

I use ConsumerExplorer as Layout Set on most of the KMs in our EP6 but some of them recently have problem showing the content with links. (If I have folder, I can't click to open because is not underlined as link. the same for files.) As I mention it happen just on the default Layout Set which is ConsumerExplorer and as I check all settings are correct on the ConsumerResourceRenderer and ConsumerCollectionRenderer. I did not update any of these settings. Just to be clear...it happened to some of the KMs the rest are set with the same Layout Set and there is no problem with them. Please if somebody have idea where could be the problem?

Not the first or last time for this complaint. It's a failing in the Panther Finder, and beyond our powers to fix. Send Apple a Feedback:

  • I have Firefox version 34.0.5. All my bookmarks have disappeared and I can't add new bookmarks. The "library" remains empty. Help!!

Have tried to restore a bookmarks file (I have a dozen or so) but I get the message "unable to process the back up file". Clicking the "star" to add a new bookmark appears to work until I click "show all bookmarks" which reveals a still empty library. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Thank you very much for your help.
What worked for me was to close down Firefox, delete the "places.sqlite" file and restart Firefox. My bookmarks instantly came back. This file is inside the "application data" folder which is a hidden folder. You must unhide the "application data" folder first in order to delete the "places sqlite" file using windows explorer.
There may be an easier way but this worked for me.
    Thanks again
