Folders don't show up in Finder Searches

Hi
I have  Mac Book Pro OS 10.8.2.
When I search through finder, folders do not show up, unless I manually go to search options and select- Kind- "Any".
Say for instance I'm search for a folder named "walden". If It type "walden" into the finder, files named "walden" will show up but not the folder itself.
In my old finder, it was easy. You had 2 choices- "contents" and "file name".
Why won't my folders show up?
Thanks
A

Are you talking about a regular finder window, or after you have used Cmd-F or Find in the File menu?
From what you describe, it sounds like you are editing a saved search, and not just "finding" normally.
When you select Find, you should see something like this:
Spotlight is the indexing and search technology that Apple uses to find things. You can do a "Spotlight Search" by typing a string into the Spotlight search field in the menu bar.
Whether you use the Finder, or Spotlight in the menu bar, Spotlight is used to do the search.

  • Albums I imported don't show up in Finder search

Several albums I've imported into iTunes will not show up in a Finder search. I know they're there! I've even gone to the parent directory and searched for them. Nothing shows up, not song name, not album name. This is horrible for me because I'm a DJ and when I am running Serato, I need to be able to find music right away and there's no way I'm running iTunes and Serato simultaneously just so it can tell me which directory to look in and then I can open up finder and navigate there.
I know this is more of a Finder issue than an iTunes issue. I just thought maybe it had to do with iTunes importing them yet not indexing them in Finder. If it is an iTunes issue, then I'll simply stop using iTunes to import my albums. If it's a Finder issue, then I'll stop using iTunes to import albums and I'll relocate my imported albums into a directory that I know indexes. In fact I just tried that right now and it worked! So tell me, why is iTunes hiding my music from me?

Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

  • I want to exclude Mail messages from showing up in Finder search on OSX Mavericks.

I went to the SysPrefs > Spotlight > Search Results tab and uncheck Mail but all my email messages still show up in finder searches.  How do I exclude finder from searching mail?

Thank you very much, this works! I didn't know about that feature, so your help was really vital!

  • Folders don't show up in Soundtrack browser

They're actually the project folders from the training manual. The sound files all show up in the Soundtrack browser, but there are project files that are on my hard drive, and show up in my Mac finder, but not in Soundtrack. It's not a big deal, since I can access these through the Mac finder, but it's weird that they don't show up in the program.

  • I-Phone 3 G don´t show on desktop / Finder of Macbook Pro.

    Hi all,
just a quick question: just bought a Macbook, all works fine, but when I connect my I-phone 3G, I-tunes recognizes the phone no problem but the I-phone doesn´t show up in finder, nor as an icon on the desktop. In my preferences I have the option "show I-pod in Finder" enabled however.
It´s no big deal, I´d just like to know whether this is normal or not.
    Cheers!!
    Not a Clue.

Yes, it's normal. The iPhone and iPod Touch don't have a disk mode (or a real hard disk, only a flash-based disk) and will not show up in the finder like older iPods.

  • Why the mail smart folders don't show the email?

Suddenly (as it looks to me) any smart folders of Mail show their email; someone does have anything to suggest?

Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and use the minus sign "-" at the bottom to remove any and all accounts that you don't want in Mail.

  • After update, some files and folders don't show in icon view

I had an issue where some existing folders did not show their content in icon view after updating to Mavericks from 10.8 (ie 0 items in icon view, 30 items in list view)
I solved it by going to the "view options" for the folder, and changing the "arrange by" settings from "blank" to any thing else.  The update did not transfer the arrange by options correctly.

Hi there and welcome to the WD community.

  • When searching for mov files, they don't show up in Finder

Okay, so I think I found a good bug. (bad bug). I copied a bunch of .mov files from two CF cards to an external ExFat formatted hard drive. Once I copy, I can see the data on the hard drive. I have two folders: "Card1" and Card2". Again, I can clearly see all of the .mov files if I just manually open the folders. But when I search for the .mov files on the entire hard drive, (for the purposes of counting the number of .mov files I have), only files from one of the folders are found. Even though they are clearly there, and they play, etc. This is quite strange. Any ideas? I'm on Mavericks.

  • Allowed Apps don't show in Simple Finder

Ok, because of the nature of this problem I didn't know exactly where to post this, so hopefully this is a good place...
I work at a High School where we've got about 30 or so student laptops available for teachers to check out to use in their classes. They are all iBook, iBook G4, PowerBook G4, and MacBook computers, and all running OSX 10.4.11. The problem I'm having is with Microsoft Office X and Simple Finder. I have it installed on all of the computers, but for some reason the MacBooks won't show it in Simple Finder. It works just fine on all of the other computers, but the 6 that are MacBooks won't work. I set them up the same as all the others and nothing... I came up with the idea to try logging into a student account, running full finder and create aliases for Word, Powerpoint and Excel. I then returned to simple finder and they were all there and worked, but as soon as I logged out of the student account or restarted the computer the aliases were gone...
Hopefully that makes sense. It's really frustrating because other than this one problem the computers are all setup the exact same, so I don't know why the MacBooks can't just do it like the others do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(And if you know how to resolve this, in searching the forums I found a very similar (almost identical problem) post that is still unresolved in the leopard forums: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8358649&#8358649)
    Thanks

    I found a number of similar threads - it's apparently a bug.

It sounds as if you are putting the aliases into
    username/Library/Managed Items/My Applications/
That seems to be the right idea, with further workarounds designed to stop them from being deleted when you log out. One way, according to [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3183420&#3183420] is to lock the My Applications folder after putting in the aliases.
Another workaround described in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5600449&#5600449] is to place the Office aliases somewhere else accessible, either in a subfolder of My Applications, or in the Documents or Shared folders.

  • How do I find folders/files now showing up in Finder or Spotlight?

    Hi all,
I have hidden a number of files/folders from myself some time ago, and have insofar been unsuccessful in finding them anywhere on my hard drive.  These were originally in a password-protected .dmg I created in Disk Utility, but I moved them out of there to place in another .dmg, and now cannot recall where I put them.
It's possible they're in my /system or system/Library directory - most of these files, by the way, are .jpg's.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO FINELY COMB THROUGH YOUR HARD DRIVE TO FIND THESE FOLDERS/FILES??? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO HAVE LOST THESE!!!
It was the suggestion of Apple to see if anyone knows of a script that can be run in Automator to target this kind of problem?? Or a utility otherwise?
    THANKS!!

Just as a rule, don't store anything in /system. that's for Apple's specific use; You don't really gain anything in secrecy by hiding stuff there; you just give yourself a permissions headache for no good reason.  In fact, stuff you hide their might pop up unexpectedly - for instance, if you reinstall your system and try to preserve your accounts, any unexpected files in /system may show up in an easily accessed recovery folder.
Check out EasyFind - another universal search app - if Find Any File doesn't work for you.

  • Stuff not showing up in  finder searches that IS there -help!!

I have had some weird thing recently where I have searched for stuff in the finder, for it NOT to show up. I just searched for "preferences" and the only folder it comes up with is "opera preferences" (regardless if "kind" is set to "any" and I manually search from there, or set kind to "folder"). Obviously this is weird as i know there are at least two other folders called preferences one in the user library and one the HD library. Why is this???

Start with http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html and my mod to Finder's Find at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6725932 for what you can change so you can find stuff.

  • [Solved] Programs don't show up in gnome search

    Hi everybody,
I just completed my first Arch install and I'm so far very, very pleased with how quick and lightweight it is. I just have a quick question.
I just installed firefox using pacman, but for some reason it doesn't show up in the gnome search launcher thing. If i hit the super key and then search for "firefox" I just get no results. I can launch firefox using alt+F2.
Is there something I need to do to get it to show up?
    Thanks.

  • Why does a specific web archive file show in a finder search by a specific person's name?

When searching by specific person's name in Finder, a specific .web archive file saved from a Safari browsing session appears. Why is this? Was the person's name entered into the browsing session? Was the .web archive file sent to the person?

Thank you for your initial response. Is there a way to view the web archive to see what is in the archive in detail? Cheers,

  • Leopard - Predefined Smart Folders don't allow user to refine search

What's the point of providing an "All Images" smart folder if you can't use Spotlight to filter the view???
The only reason to even have an All Images or All Movies folder is to then refine the search using keywords. Without this capability this is a pointless and annoying "feature".

Then you have to perform a tediously precise search which isn't what I was after. If I had the time and inclination to perform a precise search then I could start one from scratch.
What I was referring to was simply typing a few characters into the Finder window's search box to FILTER the currently displayed files - NOT start a new search.

  • I can create folders, but when I try to bookmark a page those folders don't show.

I have created a folder in my bookmark tab, and moved bookmarks into it. When I bookmark a site that I want to have in that folder, I have to create it, then manually move it into the folder since none of my "custom" folders appear when I create the bookmark.

Ok, I made a new profile (successful since I had none of my bookmarks etc). I clicked on Bookmarks and then right clicked to make a new folder (Test). Then I went to bookmark the open page and the folder named Test was not there. So I chose the option for New Folder and created Test 2. I then placed the bookmark in that folder. When I then open Bookmarks from the toolbar Test was there but not Test 2. When I click Bookmark This Page, I can see Test 2 as an option below Choose...
    I hope that makes sense.
