Folders in Different Spaces

Is there any way to have folders or documents in one space but not another? That is, to put all the folders I have with photos in space 2, and text documents in space 3 (but not have them show up in all the spaces at once)? Thanks.

Bumping this to the top in hopes of an answer......thanks.

  • Renaming folders in different spaces

When I'm renaming a folder on my desktop in a particular space, while the same folder is opened in another space I can't see what I'm typing.
    See it yourself:
Create a new folder on your desktop. Don't rename it yet. Now open this folder in space #1. Now go to space #2 and try to rename this new folder. When you're typing in the new folder name, you can't see what you're typing. When you try to rename the folder name in space #1, you do see what you're typing.
    Is this a bug?

  • A workaround to get open documents in different Spaces to the allocated PS space

A small workaround for Spaces CS5 Mac.
If you have CS5 documents spread over different Spaces due to clicking them in the finder and want to get them all back in to the allocated PS Space, here's a workaround.
You do need one doc open in the correct space I'm afraid for it to work. Create a new doc in there if you have to. I tend to leave one small doc open in the right Space all the time now.
Go to the allocated PS space. Select the menu option "Consolidate all to tabs" from the  Window>Arrange menu.
This will bring all the open docs from their spaces to the correct space as tabs.
That might be enough for you but you can't drag adjustments layers and layers with alphas etc to another doc in Tab view, something I do all the time when I'm retouching 20-30 shots and I'm trying to match them.
Hard to do that with tab view obviously.
Next select "Float all in windows" and you'll have your docs viewable, side by side in the right space.
If you assign a key command to those options, it becomes a quick tap 1-2 and you're done.
As far as I can tell, if you want floating windows, and all your docs in the right place, and don't want to open your images from the PS open dialogue (who does when you have 6 windows of 50 images on your dual 30" monitor setup?) then this will do it.
It's not great for all things but it's better than "It's all Apple's fault"

there is certainly no built in way to do it. In fact Dock Spaces is the only program I've ever heard of that allows you to have different docks in different spaces. if it can't do it, it's impossible.

  • How do I open multiple Safari pages in different Spaces?

My wife's MacBook Pro will open Safari in different Spaces by opening Safari, switching to a new space, then holding down a single click on the Safari sign located in the Dock. It pulls up several options including Open New Window. When I click on that, it will open another session of Safari, while retaining the session running on the other Space.
My new MacBook Pro will not do this. I have looked and cannot find any topic addressing this issue. Please help me with this, it is a more practical option for my work than just opening multiple tabs in the same space.

It slightly darkens the entire screen, shrinking my page some, and gives me three side by side options including, Quit, Hide, Options. The Options tab expands into three more options of Keep in Dock, Open at Login, Show in Finder. The first two of these tabs are checked.

  • FaceTime pauses in different spaces

During a FaceTime video call, when I try to switch to a different space from my desktop, the camera turns off.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am using a Mid-2011 Macbook Air with Mavericks and FaceTime version 3.0.

  • Multiple Windows in Different Spaces

    Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a way to have multiple windows from the same program open in different spaces. For example, I'm working on my dissertation and I'd like to have my primary Word file open in one space and research Word files open in different spaces. Every time I try to move one Word window to a different space, they all move. I've just upgraded to 10.5 from 10.4 and I'm afraid I need a bit of hand-holding.
Is this do-able? How can I do it?
    Much obliged!

Until now I never had the need to have multiple Word windows open in different spaces but your post made me interested and I went to try it myself. I tried Word, PowerPoint and Excel that came with my Office 2008 and encountered that strange behavior only with Word, so it's not an issue related to MS-software in general but Word-specific.
Furthermore in system preferences I tried to assign a fixed space for Word to open and that didn't work either. No matter which space I assign to it Word always opens in the active space, whatever that may be at that moment. Obviously Word can't handle spaces. To me it seems like a bug because the other Office-apps behave the way they are supposed to do. I don't see a workaround at the moment. This answer is quite unsatisfactory, I know, but I hope I could help you anyway by posting my experiences.

  • I would like to open different Safari windows in different Spaces

I would like to be able to open different Safari windows in different Spaces. They guy at the Apple store told me this was impossible, but I am 99% sure that I accidentally had it working this way before I realized what Spaces was, but now that I have set my Spaces preferences, I cannot get it to work for me.
Ideally, my husband could use one space - he only uses Safari. And I could use the other Spaces for my various applications, including Safari.
    Any suggestions appreciated!

    I do it as follows.
I don't have Safari assigned to any (or all) spaces. I don't have the little checkbox checked at the bottom of Spaces preferences ("When switching to an application...").
In a given space I click on Safari in the dock. This makes it the active application. Of course, if a window is already open in that space it will come to the front. But suppose there isn't a window open. I then ask for a new window (via the File menu, or via command-n). Voila. That window is in that space. You can do this in any space and the windows stay where you created them.
(A shortcut is simply to control-click on the Safari dock icon and select "New Window".)

  • SPACES: Can I have same program, different docs in different Spaces?

I'd like to have one OmniOutliner document open in Space #1, and a different OmniOutliner document open in Space #2. But I haven't yet figured out how to do this. Is there a way for me to have two different documents from the same program open in two different Spaces?

Spaces are generally designed to house a specific application in a specific space.
You can try dragging one of your documents to another space, provided that OmniOutliner hasn't been assigned to a certain space, however it is an application, not window based function.

  • Different minimised documents in different spaces.

    Fellow Mac lovers.... help, please!
It would be a great help if, when I minimise a document, it didn't appear in the Docks of all the differing Spaces I have set up on my computer. In fact, I would like to be able to have differing minimised documents available in Dock of differing Spaces. Does anyone know if this is possible?
I did download a neat program, DockSpaces, that allows you to have multiple docks, but it doesn't seem to allow having different minimised documents in the differing docks.
Any suggestions or ideas on this would be very gratefully received.

there is certainly no built in way to do it. In fact Dock Spaces is the only program I've ever heard of that allows you to have different docks in different spaces. if it can't do it, it's impossible.

  • Assigning Different Spaces to Multiple Displays

    Hi,
I have my Mac connected to my TV (not mirroring) and I'm using Spaces.
I was wondering if it was possible to assign to each display, a different Space?
In other words, can I have my Mac screen displaying Space 1, and my TV displaying Space 3?
My problem is simple: I'm working on my Mac display, and I'm also watching a video on my TV. But I can't display the video in full-screen because then it takes up both screens.
Thanks for your help if you have any ideas.
    JES

Just to be clear, you CAN run an application and split its windows across different Spaces by dragging those windows in the Spaces view. So open Firefox in Space 1, open a second FF window in Space 1, then F8 and drag the second window into Space 2 and voila. It's somewhat random what happens when you click on the application icon in the dock when you do this, but it does work.
Good point about the background being very resource-intensive. Never mind.

  • Photos app: folders in different order on Mac vs. iOS devices

I recently migrated to Photos for Mac and iOS. It's great, but I've run into an annoying issue. The order of folders appears differently on Mac and iOS. See screenshots. When I try to correct the order on iOS to match Mac, the Mac folders change order (incorrectly). There's no way for me to get the two in sync. It's a small but annoying issue. See screenshots below.
Has anyone else run into this and have a fix? I've submitted a bug report: 20757942.

Your first screenshot is equivalent to the Years view in Photo on your Mac which is sorted by date descending:
What's in the side bar are albums and are sorted by Name ascending.
Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • Spaces: Different documents from one app (i.e. Word) in different Spaces

I've been trying to properly use Spaces since getting my macbook two years ago and still haven't figured it out!! Is it possible to open different word documents in different spaces? Right now every time I open a word document it opens just in the space where word was originally opened. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When MSN "upgraded" Hotmail to Outlook a couple of years ago, they "redesigned" (some would say, destroyed) the user interface, and took away the ability to print directly from a browser.
They hid their Print selection behind the three dots "..." at the far right of the Outlook top menu bar.
Once you find it, use their Print, and things will once again print as you expect them to.

  • Displaying different spaces in dual monitors

    Hi, all.
I am using dual monitors in Mountain Lion. Can I display different spaces (desktop 1, desktop 2 or dashboard) in different monitors using mission control?
    Thank you.

Any suggestion for me to watch youtube in full screen in one monitor and browse the web in the other monitor using the same application?
    Thank you.
I don't know how to achieve what you want exactly, but for this very same purpose I have used two browsers.
My usual browser is Safari, but I have successfully done what you describe by opening the broadcast with Chrome and navigating the web in Safari at the same time (I suppose Firefox would work just as well).

  • Why do iPhoto folders look different on iPad?

Why do iPhoto folders look different on the iPad?  When I launch the Photos app on the iPad you get a list of photos and photo albums that I have synced from my laptop.  All is fine.  However...
The photo albums are in a different order.....I can't see name or tag data with the folders .... impossible to search for specific pictures by name......Mainly, the entire interface is so different.  Instead of simple vertical list of photo albums (as on the Mac or the iPhone, iPod,  the iPad presents you with an array of those graphic-image photo piles -- the ones where the first picture in the album is shown on top, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Anyway to make photos and photo albums on the iPad more closely resemble the photo/album list you see on the Mac?
    David in KC

The Photos app on the iPad is just a basic photo viewer and isn't as sophisticated as iPhotos on the Mac and has limited functionality. Third-party apps will probably give you more of the functionality that you mention, but you can't change the Photos app.

  • Can I permanently allocate programs to different Spaces using Mission Control?

ie. Will they re-open in previously allocated spaces after shut down or quitting the program?
I have created 4 desktop spaces, and know how to put different programs/windows into different spaces, but I haven't been able to work out how to have them re-open in those spaces each time, without having to manually move them there. You used to be able to do this in Expose and Spaces, but can you do it with Mission Control?

    Jose,
Click and hold the Application icon in the Dock, and you will be offered this contextual menu to make your choice:
