Folders in Icon view with overlapping icons (vertically)

I have folders with icon view and the icons move too close together vertically, but not horizontally. This is new behavior. I am using 10.6.7 and have already tried trashing finder prefs. It doesn't seem to be related to the slider for icon size. or even the view preferences for grid spacing. Somehow the spacing from left to right is fine, but up and down is too close. I don't want to sort them by name because I documents that are in groups of 3; an original Quark XPress document, and then two versions of it saved in PDF format; one with answers and one without (these are tests and quizzes for math classes.) I am still using an old version of Quark XPress (6.5.2) because newer versions can no longer use the PICT file format, which my equation program uses. Version 6.5.2 has become increasingly unstable as system software evolves, so converting into PDF format has allowed me to keep my old files in a usable form. I really like having these files in a folder with "icon" view so I can find what I need quickly.

I have the views set to "Arrange by" "None". This used to allow me to place the icons wherever I liked and they would stay put; I've done this for years. Recently the spacing became a problem only in the "up and down" aspect, not the "side to side" spacing. When I choose any of the other choices, I can't get the various files to appear the way I really prefer.
For what is is worth; once I discover a folder where they spacing has gone crazy; I can select all icons below the top row and lower them a bit, then all of the icons below my new "top row" and lower them, and so on, and the folder will look fine for a few days, Then,it will suddenly exhibit this strange compacting of only the vertical spacing.

I submitted a few bug reports, though even if they say they read ALL of them, and I believe them, I doubt they will do anything about this! I feel so small and powerless with bugs like this against Adobe, I just can't imagine an Adobe guy saying "Hey look maybe we should fix that!". As far as I know, Adobe never updated any of their software through updates, if they ever change something, then they call it "CS5" and so on...
As for John Nack's blog, I went through it and I'm seeing that loads of people are complaining because of the adjusments panel so I think I won't need to. One of his answers to a similar complaint was:
"If you only try to use the panel in exactly the same way you used the dialog boxes, you're missing the point. You can now adjust things like opacity, blending mode, layer mask parameters, etc. without darting in and out of dialogs that cover up your document.
Old habits take time to change, but that can't stand in the way of progress. "
Now I do see that they believe that this is innovative and we just have to get used to it, but I'm still saying that that panel takes up space in my palettes even when I'm not using it. At least dialogs didn't take up space when they weren't needed. We could make a palette for everything and maybe in the future, Photoshop is just going to be a huge palette, with every single function right in front of your eyes, in case you forget about them... I understand that Photoshop can be confusing for people who are new to it and just want to edit family photos of their dog, but they should privilege Pro users, as Photoshop used to be a Pro tool after all...
Just think of Pro cameras: They didn't change since their invention! Only consumer cameras (or whatever electronics) change trends all the time making it easier to do complicated things...
But I might just get used to it, who knows?
Anyway, it's still full of bugs, even if I do get used to it!

  • Startup Apple icon replaced with "No" icon?

I have an old Mac that had Mac OS X Panther on it. I am working to revive it.
When I try starting up from a known good Panther installation CD, I hold down the "C" key until the dark grey Apple icon appears. But after a few minutes, the grey apple icon is replaced by a dark grey international "No" symbol (a circle with a line through it).
    What does that mean?

  • Folders always shown with big icons. I want small ones!

    Hi!
I have an issue when I open new folders.
The window always shows the big, messy icons without any order.
I want all folders to be shown with small icons, in order.
When I set the settings for finder, and check "open new windows in column view", I can't seem to get it to work for all folders.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Gablug,
Finder in Tiger needs its settings to be done one by one.
    Firstly,
    close all Finder windows.
    now,
click Finder's icon in Dock so it opens a Finder window.
) set it to Column view
    ) close it
    ) reopen it
(it should now open in column view)
) set its position on screen
    ) close it
    ) reopen it
(it should now open in column view at the desired location on screen)
    ) resize it
    ) close it
    ) reopen it
(it should now open with all your favorite settings)
) open Finder Preferences, uncheck "always open new windows in column view", and check it back.
    OK now,
    your existing folders.
You'll have to set them one by one the way described above.
reason why they open in icon view, is that it was your original setting that they remember until now.
When you set them one by one, don't forget that you have to close window between each setting in order for Finder to remember it.

  • How to view records as icons in several columns

    Hi
I cannot find the way how to show report representing records as icons organized in several columns - similary as applications are shown if "Icons" view is selected in HTMLDB 2.0 development environnment homepage. No available report template did the job.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot :-)))

    Hi Vikas
Thanks for the tip. It was interesting insight into HTMLDB internals....
I'we found the way how to do the same job with a standard report template by building the SELECT in the following way:
    select col1,col2,col3,col4,col5
    from(
    select
    opportunity_name col1,
    lead(opportunity_name,1,'') OVER (ORDER BY opportunity_name) col2,
    lead(opportunity_name,2,'') OVER (ORDER BY opportunity_name) col3,
    lead(opportunity_name,3,'') OVER (ORDER BY opportunity_name) col4,
    lead(opportunity_name,4,'') OVER (ORDER BY opportunity_name) col5,
case when mod(rank () OVER (ORDER BY opportunity_id) -1,5)=0 then 1 else 0 end endofline
    from opportunities
    order by opportunity_name)
    where endofline=1
BTW: It's a tip for HTMLDB developers

What about to add the classical Windows File Explorer Viewer with "Small Icons/Large Icons/List Detail" display options as one of standard report templated???

  • Disk Utility - Controlling the icon view and colors of a disk image

    Hello
I want to make a disk image that contains a drag-installer for my little app. I have a background image created for it with an arrow and I also put an alias of my Applications folder in it.
When I closed the disk image and copied it to another computer to open and test it, it was in icon view, but the icons were much smaller and the background image was ignored completely. Also, the left "toolbar" was visible, and I do nto want that to be visible.
How can I control these items so that they appear the way I want them to when the disk image is mounted?
    Thanks

  • How do I fix a problem with .eps files not showing up properly in icon view

Actually my .eps files are not showing properly in any of the views but icon view is most important to me.  I am using OSX.8.5 on a mac mini and mac book air.  Almost all of my .eps files are conversions of .wmf files converted to .eps by WMF Converter software.  All of these files used to be on a PC running windows Vista using ST Thumbnails explorer to be able to view thumbnails.  For background info: I had to use a program to view the WMF files becasue hackers could put viruses into the thumbnail for WMF fies so instead of fixing the problem Microsoft disabled the thumbnail view for all WMF files.
A few of my .eps files are conversions of files created in CorelDraw 3x and converted to .eps in CorelDraw 3x.  Both types of .eps files misbehave the same.
I downloaded one .eps file today from the internet to see if it would misbehave the same way (it does).
Here is the problem: After a reboot when I first view a folder that contains .eps files in icon view I can see the file contents fine.  If I use the resize slider at the bottom of the window or resize the window itself then some or all of my .eps files revert to displaying the "generic icon" of a Loupe with a picture behind it.  If i can manage to put the resize slider to exactly where it was then my icons display the file contents as they did before I messed with the slider.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when an icon will display as the file contents or when the generic icon comes up.  In some folders all the icons display correctly at the smallest icon size and in other folders the icons may display correctly or as only generic or a mix of generic and file contents.  Icons to files that came from the same source will not necessarily display the same way.  Icons to files that came from the same source and were converted by WMF Converter at the same minute do not necessarily display the same way.  If I display "info" for the files sometimes the previev pane of the info box will display the generic icon or sometimes it will show the file contents.  If I take an .eps icon that displays properly and drop it into a folder where all .eps icons are displayed as generic then that icon displays generic.  When I move that same icon out of that folder then it will display properly.  Icon view, list view, column view and cover flow view all display differently with no discernable pattern.  Sometimes I can see file contents in column view and not icon view.  Sometimes in cover flow and not in icon view.  It makes no difference if I have a handful of .eps files in a folder or hundereds of files in a folder.  After an undetermined amount of time the icons might display properly again or maybe not.
What I have done so far:  exhaustive search of the internet did not find anyone else with the same issue.  I checked and fixed all disk permission errors that disk utilities would fix.  I know that icon view and quick look are two different things, but, I did however, download and install an eps quicklook plugin that did not seem to make a difference for my issue.  BTW Quick look sometimes works and sometimes not (no discernable pattern to this behavior either).  I tried the cnet download fix for quicklook just for grins.  It had me force QL to reload plugins and it's cache then I cleared out the QL configuration files.  This did not seem to make a difference in the behavior of icon view or Quicklook.  The only two things I have found to be consistant are 1)  The "open with preview" always works but I know this is different because this preview actually generates a pdf view of the file. 2) When the icon does display the file contents it always displays correctly.
When you read this please be mindful of:  I am a Microsoft refugee not yet familiar with the Apple world so you may have to tell me how to do "simple" things.  I have no idea what is the difference between a "thumbnail" or a "preview" or the behind the scenes way that apple generates the icon appearance for the 4 different views.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I tried to insert a screen shot but got an error message when I did it.

Was the error number really 0XE8....

My ISP recently went through a server migration which has caused me a lot of problems, which is when this started happening, but they can't seem to solve the issue on their end.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
On the computer that is running System Center Operations Manager, open the Operations Console.
In the navigation pane, click Administration.
Expand Security, and then click Run As Profiles.
In the Run As Profiles view, double-click Data Warehouse Account.
In the Run As Profile Properties - Data Warehouse Account properties dialog box, click the Run As Accounts tab, and then click New.
In the Run As Account list, click Data Warehouse Action Account.
In the Name list, click the management server that generated the alert.
    Click OK two times.
Follow steps 4 through 8 to assign the appropriate Run As account to the following profiles:
Data Warehouse Configuration Synchronization Reader Account
    Data Warehouse Report Deployment Account
Data Warehouse SQL Server Authentication Account
For each profile, select the Run As account that matches the name of the Run As profile. For example, make the following assignments:
Assign the Data Warehouse Configuration Synchronization Reader Account to the Data Warehouse Configuration Synchronization Reader Account profile.
Assign the Data Warehouse Report Deployment Account to the Data Warehouse Report Deployment Account profile.
Assign the Data Warehouse SQL Server Authentication Account to the Data Warehouse SQL Server Authentication Account profile.
On the management server that generated the alert, restart the OpsMgr Health Service.
In the Operations Manager event log on the management server, verify that event ID 31554 events are logged.

  • How to change to Icon View for some folders but and List View for the rest

I've had a bear of a time with View options in my folders. I'd like some folders to be in Icon view and other to be in List view. For what ever reason if I change the view option of one folder it changes the view option of EVERY folder. What can I do to make this happen?

I was about to ask the same. I'd like to use icon view normally, but list view for folders containing lots of text documents. It looks like the solution is using View > Show View Options, change the folder to the view you want, and then tick the box at the top fo the dialogue for "Always open in __ view".

  • Folders constantly change from list to icon view by themselves

For example, I'll open my Applications folder, change it to list view, close it, then a few minutes later open it again and it'll be in icon view. There's no rhyme or reason as to when this happens or with which folders. This used to happen in 10.3 as well and I could never figure out how to keep folders in the view I want them. Thanks.

It could be, it is a corrupt .DS_Store file. In this files, the Finder store the window settings. You could try to remove this files. I mean too, that is an generally problem under 10.3.
You can use: sudo find / -name .DS_Store -delete, this delete all .DS_Store files. Or use sudo find . -name .DS_Store -delete, if you want only delete this files in your location.

  • After update, some files and folders don't show in icon view

I had an issue where some existing folders did not show their content in icon view after updating to Mavericks from 10.8 (ie 0 items in icon view, 30 items in list view)
I solved it by going to the "view options" for the folder, and changing the "arrange by" settings from "blank" to any thing else.  The update did not transfer the arrange by options correctly.

  • Jumpy scrolling with Icon View

I have a "Books" folder with 50 - 100 other folders in it, whenever I set the view in the Book folder to Icon (icon view) scrolling is jumpy and lags - it's basically uncontrollable. It doesn't happen in list, column or cover flow view.
Deleting the Finder preference file and/or relaunching Finder is the only way I can get scrolling to work properly in this folder.
Has anybody noticed anything like this? Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this? I have to go through the delete/relaunch process every 2-3 days. I'd really appreciate the help, it's driving me nuts...thanks!

V.K. it was my first time using the Terminal! But I followed your instructions and it returned a message "No such file or directory found." So I guess that's not the problem.
no. it means that you did not enter the command correctly. every folder has this file and it contains folder view info for that folder.
please drag the Books folder to the terminal and post what the path looks like there. then we can get that command syntax correctly.

  • How do I sort by date with oldest first in icon view in Finder?

In Finder, when I view "As Icons", and "Keep Arranged" by "Date Created", it sorts them in reverse date order with the most recent first. But if I try to check the "Date Created" option again over this already checked option, it doesn't ever sort in ascending date order with the oldest first. Is there any way to sort with oldest first?

If you ever find the answer, I'd love to know as well. How odd is it that you can do this. I tried several searches for this in software hacks, and applications that let you alter icon views and the like. Can't believe the limited interest in correcting it either.
I was looking for a way to display screen shots of various jpeg elements with files names that double as instructions in a tutorial. Icon view allowed me to see pictures in a large enough size to use as instructions with the corresponding file names. All I would have had to do was screen shots assembled into a PDF and I would have been done. Having to retype every instruction along with copy, and pasting into a new document and so forth is more than double the work for any set of pictorial instructions.
Maybe Garage Band or some other application is the workaround until then. I'll let you know if I ever find a better workaround, or the solution.
