Folders on 2nd partition don't lock

I have a couple of questions about folders not locking and permissions not repairing after updating to 10.5.8. Not sure whether they are related but am hoping someone can shed a bit of light.
I currently have 2 partitions on my HD, one with OSX10.5.6 and the other 10.5.8. On each partition there is also a sub account which I use instead of the admin account. What seems strange is that the folders/directiories on the partition which is not in use are staying unlocked. In other words when I'm in logged into 'Z' partition and look at 'Y' partition there are no red icons on the 'Y' directories to show they are in a locked state (as I think they should be). This means I can open any folder in 'Y' partition simply by double clicking on them and then drag files across. It also happens vice versa when I boot from the other partition.
The second thing is, after installing a new copy of 10.5.6 then using the combo 10.5.8.dmg file to update I found that quite a few permissions were not being repaired (50, to be exact), even after rebooting and trying a number or times from the disc. The files not being repaired are all in the /Systems/Library folder and are either CodeResources, CodeDirectory or CodeSignature. On all of them I get the message... "should be ?-------- , they are -------- ." They are located in places like:
/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents
/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext/Contents/
/CoreServices/Kerberos
/PrivateFrameworks/DotMacSyncManager.framework
/Frameworks/Kerberos.framework
/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework
/Frameworks/AppKit.framework
/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework
/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app
/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework
/SystemProfiler/SPDisplaysReporter
/CoreServices/CCacheServer.app
/KerberosPlugins/KerberosDatabasePlugins/ etc etc...
All permissions repaired ok before the update. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about how I could correct these things?
Thanks

Permissions: See Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore. These are innocuous messages that will occur each time you repair permissions.
On each of your partitions do the following:
Select the volume icon on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Ownership and Sharing section be sure the box labeled "Ignore permissions on this volume" is not checked. If it is then uncheck it. Next verify that the permissions for the volume are:
Owner=system with r/w privileges
Group=admin with r/w privileges
Everyone is read-only
If they are not as above then you will need to modify them to conform with those permissions. This can be done by opening the Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the terminal prompt enter:
sudo chown root:admin (enter a space after "admin" then select the volume icon from the Desktop and drag it to the Terminal window after that space.)
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed after which press RETURN again.

  • Player on WD2 Black (Dual Drive) unable to access 2nd partition

    Host OS : Win 7 Pro (x64)
    Guest OS: XP Pro (x86)
I had a regular (mechanical) 500 GB hard drive (2 partitions OS and DATA) with W7P (x64) and VM Player 3.x running XPP for years with no problem.
I could access the 2nd partition through the Guest OS and modify/save files etc on it.
I just got a new WD2 Black Dual Drive (120GB SSD and 1TB mechanical in one unit) so technically there are 2 partitions on the drive.
I copied the entire Player (data) folder from the old drive to the new. I installed the same version of Player 3.x and tried to access the Guest OS - I am able to access it but unable to access network or usb drives (keep getting errors as it boots up also) etc.
So I started from scratch on new drive - installed vmplayer 3.x (even tried every version upto v 7.1.0) and installed Guest OS (XPP) again and now I am able to access the network and usb drives etc.
But when I add the 2nd partition in the settings and start the player I get an error that it cannot start because it cannot power up the scsi (2nd partition) drive and it shuts down.
If I remove the 2nd partition from settings it boots up fine.
I am able to access the 2nd partition in W7P with no problems.
In the Guest OS I am not able to access the 2nd partition.
I called WD Support and they said to call VMWARE support and the problem has nothing to do with the physical drive.
I have updated all the VMware tools (as recommended) but still not able to access the 2nd partition.
In W7P I had to install a "driver" software to access the 2nd partition. I tried to install the same thing in the Guest OS (XPP) it starts to install and then comes back and says it cannot see the 2nd partition.
Any help in this would be greatly appreciated as I would like to keep all the documents/data on the 2nd partition and be able to access the same from both the HOST and GUEST OS's without having to create duplicates or transfer them back and forth between the two.

OK FaiyazR, I think I see your core question.
When you first create a VM the only "disk" it knows is the virtual one.
If you want to access the physical disk or just specific files on the physical disk, you will have to set up a "Shared Folder". Here is one way to do it:
    While in VM Player:
Go to the "Player" button(screen upper-left)
    Select "Manage"
    Select "Virtual Machine Settings"
In the popup window select "Options"
In the "Options" menu select "Shared Folders"
    Click enabled
Click "Map as a network drive in Windows guests"
Click the "Add..." button which brings up the Shared Folder Wizard
Enter the "Host Path" to the partition (or folder) you wish to share. Repeat for next partition (or folder).
    Hope this helps.

  • Due to reinstallation of mac 2nd partition is nt showing how to recover the partition and data

Due to reinstallation of mac 2nd partition is nt showing how to recover the partition and data

If you have no backup your only option is to perform incomplete recovery (point-in-time recovery) to the time just before the drop, export the table and then restore the database (for example, from a cold backup taken just before the incomplete recovery,) and import the table. This obviously requires a full backup
taken before the drop which you don't seem to have, so the answer is "regrettably no."
    If you have a backup;
Take backup of ur current db, apply previous day backup, do point in time recovery to get table back, export table, shutdown and apply latest backup, import table back

  • 2nd partition with Tiger

    Hi,
I just got a new MacBook Black and would like to have two bootable partitions -- 1 Leopard and 1 Tiger. I need to have a Tiger partition so that I can sync with my Palm Treo 700p, which I was never able to sync with Leopard on my PowerBook using HotSync (and I'm not a fan of the Missing Sync). Every time I try to install Tiger on the 2nd partition, however, I get an error message stating something like "This software cannot be installed on this computer."
    Any advice?
    John

If you'd purchased the previous 2.16GHz black MacBook version that originally came with a set of Tiger install discs, instead of a 2.2GHz black MacBook with a set of Leopard install discs, you could install the original Tiger onto one partition and add a retail version of Leopard onto a separate partition. The biggest problem with that strategy might be that the older MacBook had a RAM limit of 2GB compared to your new MacBook's 4GB, not to mention that the new one has a faster front side bus.
Your new MacBook with Leopard install discs will only install Leopard or the next OS X after Leopard, but it will not install an old OS X like Tiger or Panther; or OS 9.
Refer to this Apple Support article:
"Don't install older versions of Mac OS than what comes with your computer"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497
I don't advise doing it, but if you don't care about the RAM, you could return the new one and buy a refurb 2.16GHz model, if you don't mind going backwards with technology. We're sure to hear some howls about that, but it is only up to you to decide.
Me, I'd just sell the Palm and keep the new black MacBook. I happen to be waiting for mine to arrive:)) The 4GB RAM capability means I'll be able to keep it for 3+ years, just as I have done with my iBook G4 with a max 1.25GB of RAM.

how can i recover my system from that files without any toshiba utilities?
You should order the recovery discs from Toshiba.
Toshiba Europe Backup Media Online Shop
After you have restored the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents, you should have the recovery utilities and partitions. See the A350 User's Manual (attached) for how to recover after that.

  • Cant merge 2nd partition to 1st?

I had snow lepord installed and created a new partition for Mavericks. I love mavericks and never use snow lepoard anymore and want to merge it to my mavericks partition. How do I do it? I cant merge 2nd partitions to my 1st? lol *** is that about

Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, select the drive, and look at the list of partitions.
If the Mavericks partition is the first one in the list, delete the second partition and resize the first to the drive's capacity.
If the Mavericks partition is the second one, use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to clone it to the first partition, restart from that partition, and proceed as above.

  • One account on two partitions - how do I import accounts to 2nd partition?

Sorry for asking again, cause I´m sure, there´s a thread about this. But since there´s no possibility to search thread titles, there´s too many search results to find an answer.
I have two different partitions. One for music and one for other works.
I want to use the same mail account for both partitions, meaning that I can enter Mail from both partitions an see exactly the same mails, etc.
I managed to have the same folders by creating an alias of the library/mail folder, but I did not find out, how to transfer the account-information, cause I don´t know, where these are stored.
So when I open Mail from my music partition, I have all Mail-folders I created on the other partition with all mails inside, but I don´t see my t-online.de - account.
Any ideas, how to solve this?

  • My iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation don´t show up anymore in iTunes after upgrade to iTunes 10.5 and MacOsX 10.6.8 Snow. What can I do??

I was using iPods touch 1st and 2nd generation together with iPod Shuffle 1st generation with inferior versions of iTunes and MacOS X without any problem. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6.8, the iPod Shuffle still appears in iTunes normally, but the iPods don´t appear. Its not a problem of the USB because because it happens with two different USB cables which worked just fine before. Any idea how I could get the iPods working again?? Thanks a lot!!!

I have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, MacOS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.5, and my iPod still works when I plug it in.
So it's not the software, because mine still works. Do your iPods have a lock on them? If so, try unlocking them and then plugging them in, usually when your iPod has a passcode lock it won't show up in iTunes until you unlock it.

  • Windows partition disappeared says locked

    Hello everyone
I'm having an issue with my Mid-2012 Non-Retina MBP. I'd installed Win8 through Bootcamp on a 40GB partition and everything was fine until I hadn't used it for a couple of months and it no longer showed up in the boot options. I inserted my Win8 disc to attempt a repair the partition, and Windows 8 told me it was locked. It shows up in OSX disc utility and shows no error when I do a repair. Anyone have any leads on what might be going on?

  • Why does the site manager create c:\ folders for files that don't belong to the site via FTP?

    Hello everyone,
now I've been using Dreamweaver since Ultradev 1.0 and I have just recently upgraded to CS 5.5 Web Edition. Before that I used CS3. I've allways been very satisfied with Macromedia and Adobe products until now
Now I don't know whats happened in the last few years but I am getting the impression that the quality of Dreamweaver used to be alot more stable.
Developing for more than half my life I understand that bugs are usual and that not everything can be cared for, but to be quite honest I also know that there are bugs that just should not happen when you ship a product.
On the other hand I do love some of the enhancements that have come with 5.5, for example the Javascript Framework integration and jQuery code hinting features but what I really cannot understand is why the heck is Dreamweaver automatically uploading files that do not belong to the currently open site to the ftp server? I cannot think of any scenario in which this would be appropriate behaviour. I'd understand it if the files somehow contained links (CSS, JS, PHP, etc.) to the currently open site, but they don't! Dreamweaver simply sets out, every now and again, to creating a totally "dumb" folder structure on my ftp servers when I open a file from outside of the site - which I do very often to copy code I used in other projects.
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because Dreamweaver created folders like this "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\.... and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the currently open site.
Now I've looked for settings that would supress this behaviour but I could'nt find any.
Also, I really don't want to stop using the automatic upload function because it speeds up development time significantly.
Does anyone know how to work around this issue, or even better, does anyone know why this behaviour is happening and what it's purpose is?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

... what I really cannot understand is why the heck is Dreamweaver automatically uploading files that do not belong to the currently open site to the ftp server? Dreamweaver doesn't "automatically upload" anything unless you have it set to on save. This is a bad practice if you aren't 100% sure of what you're doing. You may see it as a time saver, but if you have to go back two or three times and clean everything up, it isn't. Additionally, you select what is uploaded or not uploaded. If you choose to upload the entire root folder every time, then Dreamweaver will upload everything inside it... not automatically, but because you chose it.
As to the "dumb folder structure", when you define a site, YOU and YOU ALONE define the folder structure. If you are working in multiple sites at once (bad practice unless your are extremely meticulous about details) odds are you will sooner or later save a file from one site, with another site open in the Files Panel and Dreamweaver will save the file to the open site, not the one you opened it from (see why it's a bad practice to do this?).
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because
    Dreamweaver created folders like this
    "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\... .
and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the
    currently open site.
It reads like you have defined a testing server and are using it when  you put files. C:\localhost is a testing server protocol. If you are  testing files and then attempt to put files from the testing server  instead of the root folder, they will have the filepath from the testing  server and not from the root folder file structure. Again a bad  practice unless you are meticulous about details and remember to switch  back to the root folder from the testing server panel BEFORE you put  files.

  • How to use a 2nd partition for data storage?

The 40 GB hard disk on my satellite L10 was delivered with two 20 GB partitions (drive C and D). I now understand (by reading this forum) that it is preferred to use one partition for data storage.
Until now there was no need to use the D-drive. But by now I need the extra space.
How can I use the folders structure in windows XP home (My Documents etc) and put the data on the D-drive.
We work on this computer with several accounts.
I tried to move one folder out of My Documents to the D-drive, but then it can be reached by the other users. Should I use shortcuts towards the D-drive? I hope there is a simple solution.
    Thanks in advance.
(I tried my best to write this in English....)

    Hi
I didnt tried it before but you can try to make your personal folder on D partition. The notebook administrator should set the security settings that can be found under folder properties. Go to Security tab and check all permissions for other users. Choose Deny option for all of them.
I believe that on this way you can use your data folder alone and be sure that other users can not read or execute any of your private data.
Please let me know if it works properly.
    Bye

  • Trouble with a 2nd Partition

I partitioned my hard drive last year. Unfortunately, while booting into Windows I dropped something on my power bar and destroyed the operating system. So - I decided to wipe the partition and start fresh... and have encountered several problems.
After deleting the partition completely, I tried to create a new one.
    I encountered this problem:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
So... after some research I discovered that I needed to download CCC. I made a backup of my disk on an external hard drive, booted using the external hard drive... tried to use Disk Utility to erase my internal hard drive... and encountered another problem.
    Disk Erase Failed
Disk Erase Failed with the error: Could not unmount disk
Do I did some more research. People suggested booting off of the OSX installation disk and wiping my internal hard drive that way. Unfortunately, I have since lost my OS X Snow Leopard disk and had to borrow my roommate's. When booting with his disk, I encountered another problem.
Mac OS X Can't be Installed on this Computer.
If you want to restore your system from a time machine backup, click "restore from backup".
I don't know what to do next. Am I stuck because I don't have my original OS X disk? Or is it something else? Ideas?

    Hi,
Had the same problem... Looks like I had some 'unmovable' files in the zone where Boot Camp wanted to create my second partition.
So, even if HFS volumes are not supposed to get fragmented, well... they do...
I used iDefrag (which, unfortunately, is not free...) to defragment my HD and solve the problem. As a bonus, my Mac OS X system looks a way more reactive since then.
