Folders on the desktop are wrong-Contain all File Paths

My wife insists that the desktop folders originally only contained any files that were stored in them.  Last week the folder when opened, shows a complete path from the HD > desktop > Folder > Files.  This makes for a very busy Finder display and I am unable to identify what caused it or how to get rid of this unwanted display.
Can anyone help?

Hi.
You're getting this?
Instead of this?...
The key is the "Show items as..." group of buttons in the toolbar... (as seen directly above the printer icon in the screen shot above).
Make sure the Toolbar (and Side Bar) are visible so you can select the view.  ⌥⌘T (option-command-T) is the toggle to display the Toolbar.
I hope this is helpful.

  • I accidentally installed Genieo and now my folders on my desktop are not showing my files

I accidentally downloaded some version of install.mac.  I have used the uninstall application and this has reset my browser setting on chrome which is good! However, I can no longer see my files from opening any folder on my desktop.  I have restarted my computer many times and I still see the same thing when I open my folders.  Please help!  I believe it was this site that downloaded the virus  https://www.voipcheap.co.uk/dashboard

I went through all of these steps.  I also downloaded AVG antivirus.  It detected nine files that may have been malware and I deleted them.  I have restarted my computer several times after this and the folders on my desktop are still not displaying properly.  Also my folders are unable to be dragged around the desktop.  The whole desktop is messed up.

  • LXDE: managing folders on the desktop

    Hi,
I've made a discovery: folders on the desktop are real folders, no 'labels'. If you delete them, they go, contents and all. On my brand new desktop there are two icons: 'My Documents' and 'KDE', the latter being the contents of my ~/Desktop directory.
I understand that I can change 'KDE' permissions, but I'd prefer it just out of sight. Is there a way?

Yes they are not shortcuts.  You can remove them by stopping pcmanfm from controlling the desktop.  It's an option chekbox within pcmanfm preferences.
edit (assuming you are using pcmanfm that is..)

  • HT1351 When I import cds to itunes the albums do not contain all songs. If there are multiple artists or a duet, each song shows up as an album.

When I import cds to itunes, the albums do not contain all songs. If there is a duet, each duet is listed as a separate album.
As an example," Genius Loves Company" or "Tuskegee" each are listed as many albums---each album has a separate song.
I spoke to Apple Help and they were of some help, but did not answer the question.

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.

  • Problem Folders on my desktop are no longer showing any files inside

I have been using windows 7 quite a bit lately, but I logged on snow leopard, and all the folders on my desktop are empty. They show that they are still trying to load what is in them, but nothing ever comes.
this is obviously a huge problem as it currently appears all my files are gone...anyone have a solution or having this problem as well?

  • App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder

I have noticed recently that the App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder (the correct one under Macintosh HD).
This occurs whether in list, grid, automatic or whatever.
I've removed the apps folder from the dock and dragged in the current one and yet it doesn't show all the apps from the source folder.
Any ideas on why this is happening or how I can fix it?
There are 55 items in the Apps folder but only 51 are shown in the folder located in the dock.
If I drag it over (as per normal operation), all 55 should appear right?
Is there a limit on how many can be displayed?
Can the grid spacing/icon size be changed to fit them all in if that's the case?
Just dunno why this is happening???
    Cheers

Not sure this is what you want, but if you are an admin user, try this instead. Right-click on /Applications (Applications in the hard drive icon folder, the root folder, not Applications in your user) and select Make Alias, then drag that alias into the Dock to the right of or below the divider (the Trash icon is in that area.) Your Applications will now open from that alias in the Dock. The "original" alias will remain in that location, while creating a new Applications folder in the Dock. I have done this for my home folder, Utilities, and Downloads as well.

  • ITunes doesn't see new iPod nano and creates 'iPod' folders on the Desktop

My mom got a new 5th Gen Nano. When it is connected to my parents' iMac (G5 with built in iSight running Leopard), iTunes doesn't see it. The strange thing is that the iPod itself goes through the normal synching procedures about every 30 seconds, and every time it happens, it creates a new 'iPod' folder on the desktop. The really strange thing is that each folder is actually a mounted volume that cannot be ejected and the only way to remove them is to reboot the system. Right now, there are 11 of those folders on the desktop (I am connected via screen sharing in iChat.
Any idea what to do about this one?
    jorj

So, I found out how to fix this issue. In "My Computer" right click on the iPod and format it. I chose to format it using FAT and Default allocation size. After that, I opened iTunes and it recognized my iPod Shuffle. It said it wasn't formatted properly but gave me the option to restore it to factory defaults which fixed everything. Way to go Self. Thank you. You're Welcome

There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X.
What files do you keep on the Desktop? How many?
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

  • I lost the contents of folders on the desktop

I lost the contents of folders on the desktop, please help me!

If the drive is mounting, and it sounds like it is since you are booting up, and the data is worth the effort, try a third party repair utility. There are several. First choice on my list is Disk Warrior. If it is possible you erased the data that is missing then there are utilities that can go back and recover erased data as well.
However, before you do these things you should have a backup drive in hand as a place to recover the data to. No purpose in trying to fix that drive only to have it immediately fail again.
    Best of luck to you.

Are you sure you are choosing "new folder" rather than "new folder window" - new folder results in an empty "untitled" folder on my desktop whereas new folder window shows all my files.

  • Unable to select and move and folders on the desktop.

I was having many issues installing Adobe Premiere and that resulted in my stopping processes in the Activity Monitor & working with Disk Utility- repair Disk feature. Now I am unable to move my folders on the desktop, back them up, or move them out of the trash. I am able to open the files individually- but no dragging & dropping. I also can no longer copy & paste anything. I am running a Mac OS 10.5.8.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

First, I should have started with this, but if you have run Repair Disk, you would had to have restarted, so I didn't, but in any case, have you restarted yet?

Please excuse my being nosy, but where on earth did you get a brand new MBP of the vintage that it would be running 10.5.8?
I only have repair' Disk Permission's and 'Verify Dis'k Permissions options available- The 'Repair Disk' tab is grayed out.
EDIT: That is as it should be. "Verify Disk" is not available? If it is, just run Verify, and if it's "clean," no need to run RD. If neither VD or RD is available, then:
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.
eesh. I'm afraid to reinstall the OS- I have a ton of media that hasn't been backed up yet from the past few days.
If you have another Mac, you could boot your MBP into FireWire Target Disk Mode and copy files from it:
