Folders on top in Finder

Sorry for this newbie question, I've only had my first Mac for a few weeks ... how do I get to see Folders on top of the list if I look at a folder in Finder? Now all folders are just between the other files in alphabetical order, and I know I can sort by type, but I would love to have the folders come up on the top of the list by default. How do I do this?

There is no way to do what you want in Finder.
You could have a look at alternative file managers such as PathFinder (http://www.cocoatech.com/).
It can do so-called smart sorting of files and folders.
I'm not sure if putting a space at the start of each folder name is a good idea.
As has already been suggested: use files OR folders in a single folder, don't mix them

  • Folders at Top in Finder and Home/End Keys

As a recently converted former Windows user, I'm trying to get comfortable with the the Mac way of doing things. A lot I like, but two things I'd like to change: the sorting of folders alphabetically in Finder (instead of appearing before the files) and the changed use of the Home and End keys in documents (in Windows they take you to the beginning and end of the line of text you're editing).
I've tried the modification to Finder in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=208068 but can't get sufficient privileges to save the changes to the InfoPlist.strings file (and Mac support says that it can't be changed under any circumstances). I've completely struck out with the Home and End keys.
Is there any way to configure things the way I'd like?
    Brett

Well, Mac support might have valid reasons for telling you that the procedure is not supported, and that things may go subtly wrong in other parts of the system if you make that change. However, this change seems to be pretty innocuous, and it's something that's been bugging me for a while now (so I'm glad I read this thread . I don't recommend changing system configurations lightly, so please be careful if you do decide to do this.
I was able to generally follow the instructions and make the change, and it worked fine for me. However, I edited that file from the command line, which is a little different than written. Here's what I did:
    1. Open Terminal.
    2. From the Terminal, type
    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/
    3. From the Terminal, type
    sudo vi InfoPlist.strings
    4. In the editor, change the line that says
    "Folder" = "Folder";
    to read
    "Folder" = "  Folder";
    5. Save the file.
Step #3 is what gives you the correct permissions to make the change.

  • Terminal Command for "Folders On Top" in Mountain Lion

Looking for a terminal Command that will place all "Folders On Top", even in sub-folders. The utility I was using on Lion does'nt work on ML anymore.

Looks like to me there has been a recent update to TotalFinder.  Claims to support 10.8, now. See
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33373/totalfinder
I misunderstood your questions.  I thought you wanted to display the files in the Terminal.  You want to change the way the finder displays files.

  • DW won't display folders created in Mac Finder

I have a Mac. When I was using CS3, I could use Finder to create a folder, then put an image in that folder. If it didn't display in Dreamweaver, I'd just refresh the view, and it would appear.
I just tried the same thing with CS6, and it doesn't work. I have a folder with an image that I can see in Finder, and I also found it in Bridge, but I can't publish it online because it doesn't appear in Dreamweaver.
    So I have two questions:
    1. How can I make this folder and image appear in Dreamweaver?
    2. In the future, what's the best way to create folders and move move images between folders - with Bridge?
Finder is far easier to do this sort of thing with than Dreamweaver, partly because I can open multiple windows and move files back and forth. But I haven't really worked with Bridge yet, so I'm not sure exactly what its capabilities are.
    Thanks.

Yes. All my sites are in a folder called Sites. This particular image is at Sites/GS/images/World/Eco/Animals/Birds/NA/USA/NY.jpg
Just before I posted this response, I discovered that the image is now visible in Dreamweaver. I don't know exactly how; I refreshed the view and switched sites, but I couldn't see it.
I just set up my site in FileZilla and used it to publish the image.
So I don't know if I did something to trigger the image to appear, or if I just have to wait half an hour for it to become visible.

  • Why does long list of files and subfolders scroll to top of finder window when a folder midway or down the list is opened?

I am not sure how long ago this first occured, but when I upgraded to OS 10.8, I was hoping this would correct itself.  Now I am not sure if it is a bug or just the way Finder works.  When I have a Finder window with many files and folders, and I open a folder > midway through the list while previous files and/or folders have already scroll off the top of the window, the window scrolls up to the beginning of the list and I need to scoll back down to wee what is in the folder.
I thought the finder window stayed steady and the folder openned revealing its contents without the finder window scrolling.  The only work around I have found for this is to always double-click a folder open, so it is the new Finder window.
    Problem or not?
    Thanks,
    Ray

About the only thing I can say is to keep going to Verizon, or calling customer service to get them to look at the issues. I talked to 1 rep that told me to dial either 4# symbols, or 4* symbols (Can't remember which it was) after I got the VM message but did not have the phone ring, so it would mark my account record and they could search and troubleshoot the issue.
As far as your upgrade, I think you have done the right thing so far, and that is signing up on this forum, that way you can look at the different phone forums and see what issues that people are having. Talking to people that have the phone is a great way to find out what the issues are. Verizon Sales reps will only sell you the latest and greatest, or if there is something that they are being told to push to get out of stock.
Going with an iPhone is ok, just make sure it is correct for you, because like you said earlier, once it is done, it is done and you are stuck with it for 2 years. I had a friend who made a knee-jerk reaction to a bad phone, and did the same thing. They regretted it after 6 months. I am not saying the iPhone will be bad for you, just make sure you do your homework.

  • Sorting folders before files in Finder

    Hi there!
Is it possible to have Finder to show all of my folders before the files?
I find it a little confusing to have folders and files mixed together but can't find any option to change the way they are arranged...
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks and Ciao!
    Sergio

    Try this:
In Finder goto View ang then to Show View Options. In there goto Keep Arranged By and in the dropdown under that, select Kind.
    Does that work for you?
Oops! forgot....at the top of the View Option window, you can check if it's for This Window or All Windows (I assume you want it for all)

  • How to get folders/icons in all finder areas to have the same size?

I'm trying to make the icons in all areas of my finder appear a larger size. I've managed to make this happen by going into view/view options, but it seems to change it only for that window. If I go into a different window they are the "default" size of smaller.
How do I change it so that all windows open in the same look/feel?
    Thanks.

I have tried that and it seems to "take" only for that group of windows (e.g., "applications", "movies").
Is that accurate? That I must do it with each "group" of windows. For example, if I have "music videos" as a folder with various artists folders, I have found that if I do "music videos" it seems to work for the folders inside. But I go to "tv shows" as a new window, I must repeat the process. True?
no. if you do this in one folder and use "set as defaults" it should apply to all folders no matter where they are located. delete the file homefolder/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, control-option-click on Finder in the dock and choose "relaunch". this will reset your finder preferences. try setting default view options again.
    Sorry if this is elementary.

  • How to make "Show All" folders the default in Finder

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I'm having a lot of problems customizing my Finder folders to my liking. I love the new "Arrange By..." function, but the only thing that's bothering me is having to manually click "Show All" for my folders and files every time. Is there any way of making this the default setting?
If not, is there an alternative way for keeping my folders locked in a set order? For example if I have the a main folder and within it are the subfolders "Art" "Music" "Photos" "Misc" can I have them so they always show up in that order and won't rearrange themselves everytime I add new files into the folder?
I hope that question makes sense.
I am referring to that Show All button just to be clear

  • What to do with a file in the top of finder

I accidently droped an MP3 file onto the top of the finder. Now there is a little file up by the minimize button. When I click on it it opens the file, but I don't know how to make it go away.

  • Display UNIX path at top of Finder window?

I used a trick, long since lost I'm afraid, to tell the Finder to display the
UNIX path name of the current directory at the top of the Finder window.
For example, a finder window with my Documents folder selected
(i.e. "in" the Documents folder) normally shows the special
Documents folder icon and the name "Documents".
What the trick would have it show instead is:
      "/Users/cprice53/Documents"
I've started over with a clean install of Lion (jury still out on the wisdom of this)
so even if the setting would still work, I don't know how to make it.
Does anybody know how to do this in Lion?

    And Indeed it does.
    Thanks so much.
I've used other software from Marcel Bresink but had not looked at this one.
For the benefit of anybody stumbling onto this thread
in the future, I highly recommend both his free and paid
    software.  Take a look at.

  • Question mark at top of Finder window

I have just upgraded a friend's iMac to Tiger and in any Finder window there's a question mark just to the left of the search box. When I click on it, the message is 'The item cannot be found'. I've never seen this on any other machine running Tiger and wonder what its function is ...?
    Thanks.

    Hi, G. F-L.
Dragging the icons of files, folders, disks, or server volumes to the Finder toolbar creates an alias to the object. If that object (file or folder) is deleted, or if the associated disk or server volume is no longer mounted, then the related alias in the Finder toolbar displays a question mark.
The same holds true for icons in the Dock.
In addition to the Command-drag gesture Rod suggested, one can simply Control-click icon bearing the question mark in the Finder toolbar and select "Remove Item" from the resulting contextual menu. The icon bearing the question mark will then be removed from the Finder toolbar.
    Good luck!

Ok, so at some point you draged a application, document, or folder into the top of the window, it creates a shortcut, then you delete the file, now the system shows a ? because it can't find it, to get rid of the ? hold down the command key and drag it off the grey bar
