Folders show 43,000+ photos on drive actual viewing only 400

I recently ran out of room and moved all 2010 images to a new hard drive. Because Lightroom 3.3 would not recongnize the drive I moved the 2010 files over with windows explorer and relinked them.  Many of the folder names did not follow only dates.  When I looked at images that were not moved like the folders in 2005, they are now missing.  The Volume information shows 43000 + images but under the folders there are a total of 400+.  I closed and optimized the directory- no help.  I tried to import them again but it show I already have them and does not allow a reimport. I can view the images in the previous drive, yet lightroom can not seem to locate them.  They do not show in the folders within lightroom so I can not link them although I did not move the majority of the images. Suggestions (besides using lightroom in the future to move files.)

  • PS icons show instead of photo thumbnails on Picture Viewer

I've loaded CS3 on a new laptop---Windows 7.  CS3 Bridge and Photoshop work great, however the thumbnails show the PS icon instead of the photo in picture viewer.  I'm sure I'm missing a file or have one in the wrong location.  Any idea how to repair the problem?
    Thank you!  Randy Black

Thanks for your speedy reply, Curt!  Just the RAW icons are showing up---the JPEG's are OK.  I do have ACR 4.6 loaded in the following location:
Program files (X86)/common files/adobe/plug-ins/CS3/file formats.  The file is Camera Raw, Type 8BI.  I also checked in the "other" Adobe file to make sure I didn't have a duplicate of the RAW file there-looks OK.  Bridge works great-just showing the PS icon in the "Picture Viewer."
I've evidently accidently deleted a file today as I have been able to view RAW thumbnails until today.
Thanks again!  Have a great week!

  • Aperture 2 only showing previews/thumbs (no full screen/no "Viewer Only")

Not sure what's going on, bu Aperture (46k pics on a MBP 3.06) suddenly stopped showing pictures in Viewer/full Screen modes a day ago.
It shows me all the thumbs in Browser mode, but the bigger version of the picture that should be seen in the Viewer Only and Browser and Viewer stays empty the entire time. I see all the meta data in the Viewer window (ISO, version name etc,...) but no big picture. As you might expect, pictures all appear to be present, but, what's going on??

I'm having a similar issue as well! Currently the main viewer has stopped showing images. Full screen seems to be working for the time being, but now I can't use the books feature as I can't see the main viewer!

  • Folders Show up in Catalog, but unable to view photos in folders after a certain folder

System: Windows 7, 32Bit, Core2Duo w/ 2GB Ram, LightRoom 5.5 hooked up to a Nikon D5200 for Tethered capture & review only.  Currently we have 1727 folders and 5530 pictures in the Catalog.
We use this system to take product images for a website and the images are stored on a mapped drive file server.   Today when trying to review some of the more recent pictures it would not select the folder/open the photos (but you could see the first picture in the folder in the preview window).   I was running LR 5.3 so I upgraded to 5.5 to see if that would fix the problem but it did not.   I am able to see the pictures if I click on the root folder and it works as expected.
Older folders/pictures work they way they should, but everything taken after Monday did not work. (Monday happens to also be the last day a backup of the catalog was done).   When I revert to Monday's backup all of the folders/images work.  When I try to import the missing folders/pictures into the Monday backup , I have the same issue at the same point.  I have tried creating a new catalog from scratch and have the same problem, however the "break-point" (where I can no longer see inside the folders) changed to a slightly earlier [in the series] folder.
I can browse the mapped network drive and see all of the folders/pictures without problem.  I have also tried Synchronizing the folders and optimizing the catalog but neither had any effect.
Have I hit some sort of folder limit?  I read there was no "hard" limit file/folder limit per catalog, but with the way it is acting, it is almost like I found a hidden folder limit.

I can see all of the folders in the folder list, just can not click on the last 30-40 so maybe 1700 is limit
The folders are setup as:  (each folder has 1-4 pictures inside)
    p:/parts_pictures
    p:/parts_pictures/part1/
    p:/parts_pictures/part2/
    p:/parts_pictures/part1727/
In LightRoom it shows up as
    ->p:/parts_pictures
         - part1
         - part2
         - part3
         - part1727
(note: I am using the part1, part2, part3 as an example.. the actual folder names are our internal 6 digit ID)

  • HT201317 Just got a 4S.  We've taken 1,000 photos which are in the camera roll.  Photo Stream has loaded the last half of the 477 pictures.   Not sure what happened to the first 523 pictures.  How do I request that these be uploaded again to Photo Stream?

I have a 4S and have taken 1,000 photos.  For some reason only the last half of them, 477 pictures, loaded to Photo Stream.  I think I turned off Photo Stream in attempting to set up iCloud.  How do I re-load the first set of 523 photos again to Phot Stream?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
It is not very easy at all to add photos to photo stream from your camera roll on your phone, the only way I'm aware that this can be achieved is to take a screenshot of each photo. It would be much simpler to sync your photos to a computer and add them to photo stream from there.
Photostream when enabled will only add photos from the camera roll that were taken post photostream activation.

  • My imports are not showing up in Photos or Events

My imports are not showing up in Photos or Events.  The only place I can see them is in the "Last Import" folder.  When I try to re-import them it pops up the Duplicate warning which means they are in the library but not showing up.  Any ideas?

If they are in last import then they should be there - check the date on one of the photos in last import and look for that date in your library - last import, photos and events are simply different ways of viewing the same photos - if they are there in one view they are there in all views - somewhere
Select a pic in Last Import and Right-Click on it. Choose 'Show Event' from the menu. This will bring you to the Event containing the photo.
If the photo is in Last Import, then the photo is in the Library somewhere,  just not where you expect it to be. Usual causes: the date on your camera is wrong, and so the date on the photo is wrong, or the sorting of the Events has changed (View Menu -> Sort Events)

  • Deleted iPhoto library and folders containing photos but hard drive still show 32GB of photos?

I have a new MacBook Pro Retina.  Was having all sorts of problems setting up with Time Machine/Time Capsule back-ups.  To cut a long story short I moved to trash a whole lot of photos I had imported, including the iphoto library. Have emptied trash - normal and within both iphoto and aperture - but About this Mac is still showing 32GB of photos.  Where are they? And if I wanted to reconnect them to iphoto, how do I do that?

Open a Finder Window and go to your Username then to the Pictures folder. In there you will find a file, actually a folder but I won't get into that, called "iPhoto Library.photolibrary". It is that files (Folder listed as a Package) you need to Copy to your external drive.

  • I move all photos to a new external hard drive.  Now all folders have a question mark in them.  How do I find ALL PHOTOS at one time instead of having to find each picture. I have about 30,000 photos. Using  Mac. LR5

I have set up a new external hard drive and Im trying redirect LR to the new hard drive. I have over 30,000 photos and Im trying to see to see if there is a way to all photos located without having to go thru each folder at a time

  • Tried to reinstall iPhoto library from external hard drive, it shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.

My hard drive crashed recently and we took it to apple to get repaired. The apple employees said that they would have to replace the hard drive but they didn't have the equipment to get the data off my hard drive. So I took it to a computer store who had the right equipment after a month and a half of waiting they finally got all the data off my hard drive and put it on an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable Drive). I then took it back to apple who replaced the hard drive. Now I'm in the process of reinstalling everything. I have never done a Time Machine back up or backed my laptop up to . Which I now will do very often once I've reinstalled everything. I have reinstalled all of my desktop images and folders as well as my iTunes library with no issues. However when i went to reinstall my iPhoto library it came up blank. I then Rebuilt the library several times and this was the result.
It shows that the photos and events are there but there are no thumbnails and if you click on an image or video nothing comes up.
Please help i have three years worth of images from holidays on here and would be devastated if i lost them.

iPhoto cannot find the thumbnails or the original pictures.
Go to your iPhoto Library in the Pictures Folder.
Right-click on it and from the resulting menu, choose 'Show Package Contents'.
This will bring you inside the iPhoto Library package. There you should see a Folder called Masters. Within that, there should be folder containing your actual photos.
    Are they there?

  • The hard drive on our laptop crashed was able to transfer all for 2 users files etc to another mac. got it fixed 80,000 photos were transferred back but iphoto library for 1 user is empty now. can this iphoto library be recovered?

The hard drive on our laptop crashed and we took it to the apple store and they said we can transfer all files photos and videos over to another mac laptop via a special cable.  We did that and everything for the two users transferred over to the other laptop fine including 80,000 photos.  We got the laptop fixed and my husband transferred everything back to our laptop.  In his profile (he’s the administrator) his iPhoto library has all 7900 of his photos in it as well as all his events and albums that he created prior to it crashing. It’s organized exactly how he had it; however, in my profile, my iPhoto library is empty.  I had over 9,000 photos in it and like 65 events and a couple of albums and it’s completely empty yet when he transferred everything back to our mac, he it showed that 80,000 photos were transferred as well.  Do you know where all those photos could possibly be stored?

Yes you can move the book but not by exporting
The book is just entries in the iPhoto database so the only way to transfer it is ot transfer the entire library it is in - you can make a "mini" library containing only one book to make the transfer easier - see Old Toad's tutorial #9 - http://oldtoadstutorials.net/No._9.html
You also can save a PDF of the book and transfer that but you can not edit pr process it

  • Startup Disk full. I have external backup drive. Can I delete folders in My Lightroom photos?

I am using Mac Intel OSX Lion. I received a screen message that stated my startup disk is full. I am positive this is due to my 10,000 or so photos (mostly RAW files) stored in My Lightroom photos folders. Since my photos are externally  backed up can I delete those 9000-10,000 photos in various folders of My Lightroom? And by doing this do I free up disk space in my computer's hard drive?
I might also mention that photos created in LR5 are saved to folders in the Mac's Pictures area under "Favorites." So am I duplicating, i.e, doubling the file hogging capacity, because it is in Pictures and also in LR5. Any help is much appreciated.

    Jim,
See my posted title: I backed up all 9000+ photos in 3 external hard drives. Two are full but the third still has a lot of capacity. All photos are saved in lossless .dng file. I don't have a problem going back to those external drive files if I want to do more post processing with the photos.  I fail to understand why my startup disk on the Mac is full as the great majority of file space taken up are from LR5 photos. I only have two or three Mac Applications: Swift Publisher and Quicken Essentials, both of which do not require huge hard disk space.
By the way, those 9000+ RAW files are also stored in Pictures in the Mac. 9000 files each about 20Mb I calculate to 180Gb. Am I right?

  • I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.

  • I have over 50,000 photos. Events no longer show up. How do I create a new iPhoto folder like in the old days with iPhoto Manager?

I have over 50,000 photos in the current iPhoto Library. I need to download 3,000 more from trip to Spain. Can/should I make a new iPhoto Library? How do I do that?

    1) I had the same problem bedeviling me for over a month
(with the Apple Store people unable to figure out a solution!).
It turned out that the solution was exceedingly simple and easy:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/18554/why-isnt-iphoto-11-showing-an-eve nt-present-in-the-library
I have no idea how it happened, but like Asbjornu, "I had managed to sort the events "manually" (View > Sort Events > Manually) which hid the newly created events in-between my rather large amount of existing events. Sorting by date (View > Sort Events > By Date + Descending) shows my new events first in the list as they should."
I left out a huge whoop when this (simple) command solved everything.
    2) Yes, you can create another iPhoto library
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505?viewlocale=en_US
To create a new photo library:
                               Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
In the window that appears, click Create New.
Type a name and choose a location to store the new photo library.
                               Click Save.
Afterwards, iPhoto will sometimes ask which library you want to open.
    3) As far as the corrupted iPhoto is concerned,
trash or anything else, try rebuilding iPhoto (but
only after making a copy of your current iPhoto
library on an external disk, naturally).
Once the copy is made, close iPhoto, and
wait until you won't be using iPhoto or your computer for a long time
(like before you go to bed).  Close all other apps, or as many as possible,
and reopen iPhoto while holding down the Option and Command keys
at the same time.  Keep the buttons down until you get a page with a series
of half a dozen unmarked boxes or more, mark them ALL, launch rebuild,
and come back in the morning…

  • Hello. I have MacBook Pro. I have 30,000 photos on iPhoto which is not on the hard drive but on an external hard drive. I have purchased a 2nd external hard drive and I would like to make a copy of my iphoto library onto it. I cant get this to work.

I have MacBook Pro. I have my iPhoto library on external hard drive only. It has 30,000 photos on it. I have bought a 2nd external hard drive and would like to copy my iPhoto library onto it as a back up. I tried plugging both in and dragging the iPhoto library into the 2nd external harddrive. It looked as though it was working as it said 20 hours, however I then got a message box saying FiNader could not complete the task due to incompatible files. How do I do this please.

Yes, you should format the HD.
A Mac can natively write to a NTSF drive and that is what most drives com formatted with.
You should use the Mac journaled format.
Once again you are posting incorrect information
Until we know what format the drive is it is impossible to state that it must be formatted - that is just a guess
And a Mac can not Natively write to an NTSF drive - it can natively read it but can not write to it with special software
And since formatting a drive erases it it is critical to tell users not to format until they have a positively known good backup
The TOU for these forum state that you should test your answers prior to posting them  --  you obviously are not doing that and you advice is endangering users photos - please only post tested answers

    1. No.
    2. Yes.
    3. Some apps for dealing with duplicates in iPhoto
    iPhoto Library Manager
    Duplicate Annihilator
    Decliner
    iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner
