Folders View Prefs

Some of my thousands of folders have, say... a handful of folders in them or maybe a couple of text files. I want them to be displayed as icons.
Some of my thousands of folders have a lot of items in them. I want them displayed in list view.
Some of my thousands of folders contain huge, deep hierarchies of other folders and files, making column view the appropriate appearance.
Apple's decision to throw out all of my thousands of folders' view prefs and make my compensating with on-the-fly keystroke fixes (-1 through -4) that are ignored on subsequent viewings unless I +opt in+ ...on a +folder by folder basis+ is SOOOOO obnoxious. I want every folder to remember how I left it last time I was in it. Any ideas?
Joel
p.s. -Down goes 'down' into a folder, and -Up goes 'up' one folder. In Tiger, if I held option, it would close the window I was in at the same time. Now, despite claims of the same shortcuts in the help and "always open folders in a new window" set in my Finder prefs, it opens folders in the same window. The Finder is not a web browser; Different contents are best displayed in windows of different sizes, in different locations, with different file views! Any ideas?

Yes, that setting is there but it does NOT work correctly. An example would be setting Folder A to Icon View using that option, then setting another folder within that (call it folder B) to List View using that option.
All is well when either folder is opened directly, but if you open Folder A then open Folder B, and then use the back button to return to Folder A, Folder A will display in Folder B's type of view.
Very frustrating after a pretty smooth upgrade!!

  • Folder view prefs not held

When I set my folder view prefs (ie: always open to icon view), they are never saved. I seem to always have to change it over to icon view.
If I have one folder in icon view and open it up from another window it switches to list view. It seems that from all folders I have to reset the view options each time.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    thanks,
    j

I've discovered more information and am now able to reproduce the problem at will. If i type the InfoView web address as http://<server name>/InfoViewApp then all is fine, but if I type http://<server ip>/InfoViewApp then I can reproduce the problem.
Does this trigger any memories out there?

  • To rename a page or folder In either the Folder List panel or the Folders view of the site, right-click the file or folder, and then click Rename. Type the new name.

I set out to change the page name ready to publish on my hosts server after Having used a temp. name, simple so the " Expression web user guide says" I have not been able to find the "Folder List panel" of The folders view of the site,
I have just completed an hour methodically searching for the two files listed, I would be most grateful for some simple instructions on how to find the entities listed in the Title above, which I cut and pasted to make sure that I got it right.

If you are in the standard configuration, click "Site|Open Site," then browse to and open your site. With an open site, you will see a tab at the top labeled "Site View." Another tab at the bottom will be labeled "Folders,"
because you are then in Folders view of the site (recognize that terminology?). At the same time, unless you have your panels hidden, in the upper left side you will see a panel labeled "Folders List." If you do not see this panel, click "Panels|Reset
    Current Workspace."

  • Stacking of photos only in Folders view

I would like to be able to stack photos also in the Collections view, possibly also in others. Or at least, I recommend the on-line help clearly states stacking is only supported from the Folders view (so one doesn't go crazy trying to figure out why all items in the Stacking menu are disabled).

Try searching this topic, as there has been much debate and discussion :)

  • Can I Set View Prefs for ALL Windows?

Is there a way in Tiger to set preferences so that ALL Finder windows ALWAYS open to a chosen view? If I want to see all windows in List View, for example, whenever a window is opened or created so that I don't have to reset windows individually, can this be done?

    G5 Dual 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

That actually doesn't completely work. I have the same settings for my 10.4 Finder. I also have the highest level directory (ie: the boot drive) set to icon view with Brushed Metal and Sidebar turned off. However, all new folders created on the desktop always begin in Brushed Metal w/ Sidebar view. Also, folders that have been set with Brushed Metal/Sidebar turned off, open with it turned on when first navigated to via the Dock.
In other words, open place your boot drive in the Dock. Set it to icon view with Brushed Metal and set Finder to open folders in new windows. Create a folder at the highest level of the drive. Open it to confirm it has taken the parent folder settings (in this case icon view, with Brushed Metal/Sidebar off). Close the window. Now open it via pop up menu from the drive icon in the Dock. Not only does it open in Brushed Metal Siderbar on view, but also at a different size, and sometime different Desktop location. Only when you manually turn off Brushed Metal at that point will the two versions of the open folder match when navigated to both ways.
This behavior drives me nuts, as I tend to stay in non-Brushed Metal view, in either list or icon. I have several drives, and bop between Dock pop-up navigation, and regular old double click drilling. I'm constantly having to manually set windows to non-Brushed metal view, even after they were created with it turned off. I wish this inconsistency, and the fact that all new folders created at the Desktop begin with Brushed Metal on, were controllable system wide. However, it's been this way in OSX since as early as I can remember. So I doubt it'll ever be addressed.

  • All folders - view permissions

I'm trying to grant users the minimum permissions they need to work with their reports. Granting Full Control permission on the folder containing their reports doesn't seem to work, because without View on the All Folders list, they can't even see the folder to access the reports. However, if I grant View on All Folders, they have access to all the folders until I go through and explicitly remove them. Am I missing something, or is this the way it's supposed to work?
    Thanks.
Edit: Oh, I see -- I was misreading the "inherit from parent" checkboxes. If I turn those off, they only apply to the folder I'm setting them for, which is the behavior I wanted. Thanks anyway!

No, that's not right. Damn. Sorry. What am I doing wrong?
Edit: Ok, got it that time. I wasn't telling it to only apply "View" to the current object.

  • Folders View options...

    Hi all...
When i open a subfolder... its parent is close (the child opens instead of its parent in the same view option of this later) ...
Early, the Child open with its view option settings AND the Parent is still open with its different view options...
Is there a way, to open a Sub folder in its view option setting, and the Parent Remains open with its specific view options...
    Thanks for any Help !

Go to the Finder's preferences (in the "Finder" menu) and choose the option to "Always open folders in a new window" in the "General" section.

  • How do I: get folders "View as Buttons"

I know that this used to be a an OS9 thing and I didn't use it often. But as OSX has this thing about ignoring the last saved settings in a window... I thought maybe theres a way to resurrect the buttons. Even if by 3rd party hack. Although I have searched the forums and not easily found anything regarding this topic.
The major nuisance is that if I open a Folder, OSX wants to use the settings from the Parent folder on all the Children. Only disks open with their own settings. All second and third folder ignore their own settings and obey the parent. I can change them, but they go back as soon as the folder is closed. Yes I tried trashing the settings for each folder, no change.
I have also found that the Launcher also be something nice to have as I may not need to enter the apps folders for any reason with the Launcher active. I do use the Doc but its already loaded and the Icons are quite small with no way to Further organize. 28 icons in all without nesting.
I did find a nice Launcher alternative. I haven't tried it yet. Hope its spiffy enough to replace the old launcher.
-Some stuff apple Took away that was originaly the hot new thing. They never really asked if we wanted to keep it. I think at the very least they could have been left as optional installs.-

Is true I could do that. But even that mode is more or less limited to a Launcher like window.
I have no desire to unload Parental controls onto my account or create a dummy account just to use buttons. There has got to be a way to make the windows as buttons. After they have this new fancy abilities wired into our folders that makes them a more or less like "active desktop"...
See while I am looking to gain the Button ability again. I am also secretly hoping there is also a way to retain the order I prefer the Icons to be arranged. Even launcher had limited abilities in arrangement but It did allow nesting with Bulleted Folders. I had fun with the Bullets, but hated that I couldn't change the background colors... lol
I just hope that things have advanced since then and something so simply described really is just so simple even to put back.

  • Folders view of PsE 10 organizer

Why do I only see one folder at a time? I must for the time being point at the folder at the left side panel and then only see that. I would like to see all but have not managed: What have I done wrong?

In PSE10, unfortunately you can view files of only one folder at a time when in Folder Location View. To see all files please check Thumbnail View from the Display dropdown.

  • Import issue - folders view not refreshing

    All,
I have a peculiar issue, a disk which I process some images on was recently rebuilt and in Aperture it still shows the old disk folder structure. The disk is a RAID array and I can't figure out why the old folders still show. The main issue is that new folders I have created are not visible.
    Any ideas?

Aperture shows what I would call disk folder structure, I press import icon or shortcut to import, a pane opens with source disks I can select from, which I navigate through. The data held there is not correct, it seems to have held onto disks that I no longer have attached and within disks it holds onto old folders, which don't exist anymore. This only started happening after the 1.5 upgrade, so there must be some cache somewhere not being emptied.

  • View prefs in Mail inadvertently changed

I clicked somewhere by mistake, and now my Mail view has changed to just two colums, Mailboxes on left, and a list of Mail messages with the headers on the right.  It used to look like "ipad-view" (can't say exactly, since I can't see it anymore). How do I change it back?
The iOS view was Mailboxes>Message headers>Message.
I have not selected "classic Mail"
    Thanks for any tips

    10.8

    Hi Rob:
As Malcolm indicated, there should be a little grey dot (very faint) at the bottom of the mail window. Double clicking that will display the message at the bottom of the list of mail. You can then drag it to size that part of the display. Alternatively, you can just drag from the very bottom of your window (I just tried it after I made it disappear!).

You can't. Not without keeping everything in a single folder.

  • New file location in folders out of view

    +posted by toniemae:+
+When I add a file to an existing or new folder, that file goes to the bottom of the folder out of view, and the folder has a very long scroll bar. That file can be dragged up next to other files near the top of the folder. Or the files in the folder can be rearranged by e.g. name, and all files in the folder are then in view. This problem is especially annoying when one file is added to a new folder, and the folder appears to be empty when opened, except that the huge scroll bar, if noticed, indicates presence of an out-of-sight file somewhere in the folder+.
    my 2cents:
yes it true you can set view prefs. but, this is a behavior that did not always happen in 10.4. after installing 10.4.9 on a G5, added/copied or files/folders would appear normally next to any other existing icons. just recently my mac has started putting new files/folders at the bottom, beyond visible space in a window, adding a scroll bar. i think this is a poss. pref's corruption or something..this also happened on my G4 with 10.4.8
    anyone find a solution?
    (it def. drives me crazy)
    thanks, brad

You are using 'icon view' for the folder. Use 'list view'.

  • Photo folders in Organizer view.

I have Photoshop Elements 12. In organizer view, the file tree in left pane does not match the photo files I have set up in my MS Windows Pictures folder. It just has files by date and not all of them. Can I get it to reflect the files I have made? Thanks so much.

    Yes,
What you are seeing by default is shown as 'My folders' view. It's a flat alphabetical list of the last level subfolders in which you have media files.
Click on the little yellow icon just right of the 'My folders' title bar, and you switch to the 'Folders' view which reflects what you see in your explorer. The difference is that by default, you see only subfolders having image files; if you want to display subfolders without image files, right click on the master folder and choose to show empty folders; that choice is not sticky.
