Folders Won't Stay On The Sidebar In Finder Windows

Before I went out of town 2 weeks ago, I had about 20 folders I dragged over to the finder window sidebar and they always stuck.
I get home and they are gone. So I drag them all back over and go out of town this week and shut down the mac. On boot up, I see all the folders that I dragged over to the finder window sidebar are gone yet again? What the heck is going on? Why is it doing that? The only ones there are the basic ones that automatically show up. Can anyone help? Mountain Lion 10.8.5
Thanks in advance....

No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the iconic cable cars that climb up the vertiginous hills of the city. Of the twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street.

The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the road’s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from running out of control on the downward slopes.

A single ride on a cable car costs $6. If you plan to travel around the city, it’s often cheaper to buy a Muni Passport, which gives you unlimited rides on San Francisco’s extensive public transport system, including the cable cars (but not the BART subway system). Even a single-day passport ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit Chinatown one way.

There are often long lines at the cable car terminus, particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don’t want to wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).

• My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position

My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position. I have it unlocked so I believe it should switch between views as I move it. Before I make a trip to the Apple store I want to make sure it's not user error!

Unlocked allows the screen to rotate as you rotate the device. Locked is supposed to keep the screen fixed in one orientation. However the function of the switch on the side can be swapped between orientation lock and mute, so it might not be perfoming the job you expect it to. Check Settings > General > Side Switch.

• CD won't stay in the drive...

When trying to rip CDs, they won't stay in the drive. I have tried several different CDs. Every once in a great while a CD will be accepted and show up on the desktop and in iTunes, but usually there is just a bunch of clunking around inside the computer and then the cd is ejected. DVDs work fine. I have tried using a lens cleaner, but that didn't help. I fear I will need to have the drive repaired, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a preferences file I need to trash or something before I took the computer in.

When that happened to me, I had to replace the CD drive. However, my iBook would not read any CD that I tried. I didn't find other remedies. Tried the lens cleaner, too. That was pretty much a waste of time and money.
Good luck.

• Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

• I have created a second user on my imac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Anyone else have this problem?

I have created a second user on my iMac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Everything works fine with the main user. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi again, ;o)
I found this advice in another thread (here), which you might find helpful...
Unregistering the iMac from .Mac syncing and re-registering it (replacing the computer's information with the .Mac information) resolved the issue.
The .Mac sync information was Reset (i.e. recopied in it's entirety) from the MacBook (the 'good' computer) to .Mac prior to unregistering and re-registering the iMac, so a fresh copy of the sync could be loaded from .Mac to the iMac.
I hope this helps the others who have had this problem.

• Volume eject from sidebar closes finder window

after successfully upgrading 2 machines (12" pb 1.5 GHz, mac mini Core Duo 2.33 GHz) to Leopard everything works beautifully except that finder windows close when I attempt to eject a volume (CD, DVD, memory sticks, server volumes). I usually have 2 windows in column view open and only the active window closes, yet the volume unmounts successfully. This happens in any other view (list, icon) as well.
Both computers were upgraded from the latest Tiger version and don't have any extensions or pref panes installed. The problem still occurs after a "safe boot".
any help or ideas appreciated

I was a bit startled by this behavior as well. As near as I can determine, if the object the be ejected is selected in the sidebar then ejecting it closes that window. If something else is selected you can actually click the little eject button next to the thing to be ejected, it does eject, and the window stays open. I suppose this is logical: after all if something is selected in the sidebar, then Finder is displaying the window for the thing selected, and if that thing goes bye-bye then so should its window. The old behavior was actually illogical but we were used to it.

• The files in finder windows all have the same icon

Hi, the files in finder windows all have the same icons. Sometimes the icon will change when I drop a new file in a window. But I have no control over that. Any cue?
Thanks

I also rebuilt the Launch Services Database. It worked for the icons already in folders (and finder windows), but when I put a file from the desktop in one of these folders, the file does not have the correct icon.

Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue. Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

• Making a folder stay in the sidebar.

I have a folder that i want to stick in the sidebar along with the music, photos, videos, and other folders. I plan on keeping some inportant files in there but when i stick it in there sometimes it will stay and sometimes it wont. Is there anyway to get it to stay for sure.

One thing that you might try is to drag the Sidebar preference file onto your desktop: /Users/your_account/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist . Then, I think that you need to restart in order for the change to take effect. If this does not help, you might as well drag your preference file from the Desktop back to where you originally took it from. If this does work, then delete the pref file on the Desktop.

• How to retain folders from External drive on the sidebar?

I dragged some folders from my external hard drive that I regularly use when I am in the office.
Sometimes I take my MBP out without the external drives. I realize that these aliases I had created on the sidebar disappears.
When I connect up to my external drive again, I have to drag these same folders again into the sidebar.
Is there a way I can keep these external folders on the sidebar, without creating a real alias on my hard drive and copying that onto the sidebar?
Thanks!

Oh well. It would have been nice to have the sidebar folders greyed out instead until you plug the drives back in...

• Local Folders Won't Stay Collapsed

For one website I'm managing out of many, the local folders
will not
stay collapsed, i.e., the little box you click on to open and
close the
folder directories. It's a minor annoyance but I can't seem
to fix it.
I've looked at the actual folders on the hard drive to see if
there's
anything odd in there and there does not appear to be. I've
also
re-polled the directories for the site and that hasn't
repaired this either.
When I open one of the main folders, all its sub folders
open, too. When
I go, one by one, closing them, I get so far down the list
and they all
pop open again. This only happens with this one folder and
only with
this one website.
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
J

You are on windows?
There are two ways to fix this.
One way- make a new site definition for each of the sites
doing this.
Don't use "duplicate" because that will carry over the
Expanded Directory
information.
Other way- edit the windows Registry.
background:
http://groups.google.com/group/macromedia.dreamweaver/search?hl=en&group=mac
romedia.dreamweaver&q=alan+registry+expanded
There's a registry setting in the site def info for what
folders to show
expanded when a site is opened.
alternate probable fix- make a new site definition from
scratch.
probably way to prevent this from recurring- close the
folders when changing
sites or shutting dw down.
repost of old info- modify the folder location/registry key
name as needed
for the version you are using
Summary of the solution:
It's a registry thing. so do the usual backups !!!
1. Open regedit.
2. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 6\Sites\
*****the above key path will be different depending on the
version of dw you
are using (I've reposted this about every other month since
dw 6 came
out)
3. Select the site number that you're having problems with
(just look in
each one e.g. "-Site3" until you see the site name being
mentioned).
4. Careful here...
Locate the values that begin with "Local Expanded Dir" and
end with a number
(there should be quite a few of 'em) and delete them.
5. Then open the value "Local Expanded Dirs" and using a
'Decimal' base,
change the value to 0 (zero).
6. Quit regedit, and that should solve it...
