Finder reports wrong sizes

The size column in finder frequently reports sizes of folders wrongly as does get info. I have a whole series of folders showing 208K when there are 10-80 37Mb files inside. I can open the folder and see that all the files are there and have the right sizes, but the folder still reports 208K. If I alter the label colour, it will update the sizes, but this is very tedious!
Any way to persuade finder to calculate sizes properly?

Oracle XE 10g on Fedora 14

I've been trying to install Oracle Express Edition 10g on a Fedora 14 x86_64 but had no success so far.
The Oracle is installed and running:

I had this issue too as I was trying to install APEX on Fedora 14.
What I did is as follows:
1. change to root user, "su -"
2. make sure you have setup kernel parameters right.
3. make sure you have run the script to set environment variables
4. eneter "sysresv -i" at shell
5. You might get something like:

7. make sure the resources are removed properly by entering the command one more time.
8. Then try to start the database again '/etc/init.d/oracle-xe start'.
9. eneter 'sysresv -i' one mor time and this time you should see your database instance is alive.
'sysresv -i' can give you different results in different situations:

By the way, some other things might cause this as well. (Like kernel parameters, access privileges to oracle database files and folders, wrong environment variables)

Missing Music from one file but not on another file

Hello. I want to add a music sound to a program. I click on "browse" to find the music I want to add but some of the ITunes music files aren't there but.......I can closed out of the program completely go to my user folder, click on my name, the Music folder, Itunes folder, the ITunes Media folder and all the songs are there. To do the "browse", here all the files: Album Artwork>ITunes Media>Previous Libraries. To just go to my personal folder, then Music, here's the folders: Album Artworm>ITunes Media>Previous Libraries>ITunes Libraries>ITunes Library Extras>ITunes Library Genius>ITunes Music Library.
With the "browse" option, the ITuned Media folder is there but completely empty. But just to go the Music folder, with the ITUnes Media folder, all the songs are there. ITunes Media- how can the songs be in this folder but to do a "browse" to add a song, the songs are not. I have tried uninstalling ITunes and reinstalling it and still the issue. Maybe I have the folders wrong. I went to Microsoft Answers but since ITunes is my default media player, they suggested I contact the support here.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
The iTunes folder is normally inside <User's Music>. I get the idea that things are different but I don't have a clear picture yet. I think you've somehow managed to get the media folder pointed at <User's Music> instead <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media. A screenshot of the iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced might help confirm. Once we know what is going on it should be possible to make suggestions as to what to do next.

Folders on the IMAP server do not appear or appear in wrong location - those cannot be modified in Thunderbird because "they do not exist on server".

Hi all,
A few days ago, I moved 3 sub-folders within my Archive folder. I was doing those modifications using Thunderbird.
My Archive folder used to contain the following sub-folders:
Archive
/A2014
/B2014
/C2014
I tried to move the folders A2014, B2014 and C2014 under the sub-folder LastYear, and created new A, B and C folders for 2015, so that it would be something like:
Archive
/LastYear
/A2014
/B2014
/C2014
/A2015
/B2015
/C2015
On the webmail interface, everything looks fine: the old A, B and C folders where moved into the Archives/LastYear folder, and the new A, B and C folders appear under Archives. However, on Thunderbird things are a bit more... strange.
Case 1: For some folders, things are as they should be.
Folders A2014 and B2014 were correctly moved into Archives/LastYear.
Folders A2015 and C2015 were correctly created in Archives.
Case 2: One folder does not appear at all - anymore.
Folder B2015 does not appear anywhere - despite being visible on the webmail interface. It does not appear in the list of folders to synchronize. No .msf file appear. Nothing happens if I try creating it again.
Note that it briefly existed after I created it, but stopped appearing a few hours later.
Case 3: One folder appears in the wrong location and cannot be accessed.
Folder C2014 appears in the old location (Archives) and not were it should be (and is on the webmail interface), that is Archives/LastYear. I cannot perform any operation on it in Thunderbird, I systematically get the following error message:
"The current operation on 'C2014' did not succeed. The mail server for account <AccountName> responded: "Archives/C2014" doesn't exist."
(Which is correct because according to the server the folder C2014 is in Archives/LastYear).
The C2014.msf file is also wrongly located, but moving it to the correct location did not change anything: the next time Thunderbird was started, the wrongly located .msf file was re-created.
Thunderbird does not show the emails contained in this folder - when I try loading them I get the previous error message.
Using the same style than before, here is how my Archives folder look right now:

I am totally flabbergasted, I have no idea of where the problem is. I tried various fixes found on forums (such as playing around with the .msf files), but no luck so far. Any idea?
A few more details:
- I use an IMAP server.
- This is a professional address, and I have little control on it.
- I use Thunderbird with this account on two different computer, the problem is identical on both computers.
- I tried removing/re-installing the account from Thunderbird, it did not change anything.
I would be eternally grateful if any of you could come up with a solution!

No, I think that Apple just assigned the Downloads folder to Safari to send things there by default. You can do the same with Firefox, just go to the Firefox Preferences, click on main, tick the "Save files to..." and click the Choose button, then navigate to /Users/yourname/Downloads and click choose. I have always had all my Internet applications download things to a Downloads folder I keep at the root level of the drive (so all users can access them), but I just changed the Firefox pref to the new Apple Downloads folder and it worked fine.

How do I prevent AE from saving .AEP files in the wrong folders?

I've been using AE heavily for about 6 months, and it has this really pesky basic Windows UI problem that makes life quite frustrating. I work on lots of projects that I maintain sequentially numbered in their respective folders. Typically in Windows when you choose "Save As" windows defaults to the folder the current file resides in. For some reason After Effects defaults to the last folder I saved a file in, which often times is not the folder I am in. So I end up with project files from projectA stored in the projectB folder. This leads to version control problems when members of the team can't find the most recent version of projectA and so they start working on the previous version of ProjectA and later on ask me where all my changes are. I want to believe that AE has a checkbox in preferences somewhere that says "make save-as feature operate like every other windows program" - but I haven't found it yet. Does anyone have any advice on this topic?

I think you are operating on wrong assumptions - a project is just a reference to other files plus some internal data, so it doesn't exactly make sense to maintain endless lists of absolute paths, given that you can import things back and forth in a million ways. What happens as soon as you import a project into another one? What, when you collect files? What happens when you re-import pre-rendered files? A "same origin" policy would be riddled with tons of issues to figure out the logic as to what the user actually wants to do and which path is the correct one.... I've never missed any such feature.

Wrong modified dates in my folders

Hi,
I have this nagging problem for a while, all the "date modified" in most of my folders (application, documents,utility, libraries, download, etc.) are wrong.
They all show up with january dates, some this year, some previous years.Recent modifications are noted as "today" and "yesterday", beyond
that I get january dates.
My date and hour preferences are set ok.
Repaired permissions quite a few times, nothing changed.
Waited for a few system updates (10.7.3 - 10.7.2 - 10.7.1) hoping it would correct itself, but no.

Go to System Preferences > Language & Test > Formats. Click the "Customize" button in the Dates section.
The four formatting boxes in the upper portion of tat screen should contain only blue ovals (plus plain text separators, as needed, such as commas, etc.). If any of them contain a plain text entry, such as the word January, delete that plain text and replace it with the appropriate blue oval dragged up from the lower section.
Note - the text displayed on each oval is a representative label, and is not meant to reflect the current date info.

Syncing photos from pc to iphone - end up in wrong folders

Every single time i try syncing photos from my computer to my iphone 4s they either end up being multiple and/or theyre in the wrong folders.
And yes, Ive tried deleting the "iPod Photo Cache" thing and re-sync, but it doesnt help at all. They remain in the wrong folders. I seriously dont know what to do, Ive had this problem for too long, and its starting to bother me even more when I get more and more photos.

Restart your iPad to see a difference is storage space after deleting data.

Wrong numbers of unread messages reported on folders

Hi,
I have a very annoying problem with Mail where it reports the number of unread messages incorrectly on folders other than my inbox. I am using an IMAP account, with rules on the server to file messages to different folders depending on what address they were sent to.
Then often Mail will report 2 unread messages in one of these folders but clicking on the folder makes it recalculate to the correct value, 1.
Doing a rebuild on the folder seemed to fix it for about a day, but obviously it's not practical to do that so often.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix/workaround?

Thanks - I understand the read flag is set on the server, but I don't think that's the case here. Mail is not incorrectly reporting some messages as read when they aren't - it just has the count of unread wrong (in subscription folders, not in the inbox)...
Also although I do access mail from other machines/web client it happens when I haven't...
Ie
send mail to myself at address that gets filed into a folder by the server
no log on to mail from web or other computer
mail arrives in folder, reported by Mail as 2 unread messages
click on folder, resyncs very quickly, unread count revised to 1 (correct)
In fact once I was watching while a mail came in - the count first showed 1 (correct) then quickly changed to 2.
I'm not sure what extra info I can provide - I had imagined this was a common problem since through google I found many others observing the same behaviour (but no solution).
The IMAP account is with Fastmail, who I believe run Cyrus.
I have letterbox and IMAP-IDLE plugin, but this problem was happening before installation of both of those.

as a side note - my drafts folder (on the server) reports 2 messages unread (there are two messages in there) - is this normal? (drafts to be reported as unread) - I must admit I'd prefer they weren't.

Firefox Sync loses bookmarks and places them in wrong folders

One version before updating to the version 31.0 of the Firefox, I began using Firefox Sync. I use Firefox mainly on my desktop computer, which has Windows 8 as an operating system. Occasionally I use Windows XP on a laptop, which also has the latest Firefox installed.
If I add bunch of bookmarks while using just the Windows 8 machine, Firefox Sync won't lose any of the bookmarks, but if I use the other computer's Firefox for a few moments and while doing that add bunch of bookmarks, problems arise:
desktop browser either a) lose all of the bookmarks from folders, which I had added last, but folders themselves are still there (they are empty) or b) if the bookmarks don't totally vanish, they are magically moved to a wrong folder (source folders don't get deleted).
This happens while not touching the desktop browser at all. Sometimes bookmarks appear again like they were never really gone, but I'm not sure does this happen every time as in most cases nothing appears after 10 minutes of waiting.
From technical point of view it sounds like there could be either counting or folder-id related error, but who would code something so silly like getting the placement of a folder in a hierarchy by counting? If it is id-related.. well, that would be equally awful. Also, there should be something wrong with the syncing itself, but is it really normal that bookmarks totally vanish for some time, before (maybe) appearing again later?
Or then.. I have an unknown remote user, who manages my bookmarks, while I'm not watching..?

Seems like things tend to get worse seemingly automatically as my desktop browser constantly merges the latest bookmarks resulting to few empty folders and one with the latest bookmarks (e.g. after adding 3 new folders and putting few bookmarks to all of them) . This happens only in the root of a bookmark hierarchy and thus I can add any amount of folders and bookmarks to the existing subfolders without them getting messed up. Bookmarks residing out of any folder seem to stay intact. I haven't tested what happens if I add subfolders to folders I added last.
The messing up of bookmarks happens with a delay, so I can happily add lots of bookmarks for an hour or more without anything suspicious happening. I can even close the browser and reopen it. I'm not sure what the actual delay is. Maybe few hours, maybe more. No involvement of other devices required.
I've tried to reinstall the browser by uninstalling it first which included deleting of the "Firefox" directories from the following directories: "AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\" and "AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox"
That didn't help either. I guess I could try to use another Firefox account for syncing bookmarks, but I don't have very high hopes toward trying such.
Simplest reasons might sometimes be the right ones, so in this case I actually could have a remote user, who does some "evil tweaking" to my bookmarks. Or would somebody claim that after being few years in development the Firefox Sync still can not handle the most basic functionality (keeping bookmarks in folders) -- for some people? I read that there are others, who have had similar problems, but that doesn't rule out the possibility this is something else than just a technical glitch.

Yosemite 10.10.1: Finder/CIFS mount problem: wrong folder count/folders not shown @samba shares

we have several MacBook Pro (15" MBP Retina 2012/13"MBP Retina 2014) running. After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.1 we had one nightmare after the other.
Most problems could be solved with 3rd party software upgrades but there are several problems with the operating system itselve which can not really be called a professional productive system at the moment...
Ok., one thing after the other...here is one of our biggest problems:
After upgrading from Mavericks or Mountain Lion to Yosemite 10.10.1 the CIFS/SMB mounts to our samba 3.x servers, running on Ubuntu Linux LTS 12.04 makes trouble. We could mount the server shares but after browsing with the Finder the beach ball occures and the Finder hangs forever. Sometimes we could not refresh the Finder, killing the process ended in a complete hang-up of the system which ended in a switch off death blow. This is not amusing because we have 30Tb of customer data there, which has to be worked out.
We heard about the SMB3 protocol which will be used per default in Yosemite and so we decided after some testings to upgrate our Ubuntu servers to the latest LSF 14.04. release with samba 4.1.6 installed. There was no message from Apple for this SMB protocol release upgrade, never heard something related to Yosemite (Why?).
Ok, after these server upgrades and disabling most of the Spotlight functions the performance to the CIFS shares was a little bit better as before but now we have another problem with the Finder...if you browse to the shares there are folders missing which have lots of files in it. For example there is a folder with 60 subfolders and 3562 files on the first level in it, the Finder shows 220 files and 15 folders. The Terminal shows a different count with "find . -maxdepth 1 -type d | wc -l" or "find . -maxdepth 1 -type f | wc -l" but there is also a difference to the original file and folder count. It doesn`t matter if the clients are connected via WiFi or Gigabit Ethernet. We have no access problems. We have the same behavior if we set the files and folders to 0777 permissions on the servers. The deletion of the preferences files of the users on the MacBooks does not solve the problem. If we use the "Go To Folder" option and type the path to a folder which is not shown in the Finder you get an result or not. But it is also possible that the result is not correct and there are also still files or subfolders missing.
In my opinion this is a timeout problem and a "special SMB3 protocol interpretation" which is buggy. We have one hint found in /var/log/system.log:
"Jan 23 14:35:49 wsosx33.clients.getcom.de KernelEventAgent[69]: tid 54485244 type 'smbfs', mounted on '/Volumes/customersdata2015', from '//x144067:@srvlxp013.servers.getcom.de/customersdata2015', not responding"
We had no problems with Mavericks at all, we still have no problems with Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate, Windows 2008R2 (native or virtual) or Linux Mint 17/17.1 clients, neither with samba 3.x nor with our actual environment and different newer samba releases.
We believe that this is a big bug in Yosemite, but we cannot go back to Mavericks because of incompatible TimeCapsule backups. Our workarround at the moment is that we have installed Linux Mint on our MacBooks to get 80% of our daily jobs done, rest has to be done with Windows 7 installed over virtualbox @Linux.
We have no clue at the moment how to solve this problem, the samba logs do not give any hint. The access from other operating systems is perfect and very fast, but not with Yosemite. We checked different tips found in the internet but nothing helped.
Does anybody has another idea to get Yosemite working or should we keep Linux Mint until Apple will provide a CIFS/SMB patch and going on with our workaround solution, which is productive at the moment ??? Our staff is not amused and wants one solution and not this workaround with two operating system. We have to decide wether we wait until Apple will get this fixed or we have to switch to Microsoft Windows (which is a No Go for me, but I will not be asked...).

As you can read in my post I talked about CIFS/SMB.
It makes no difference if we mount the share over CIFS or SMB.
Folders with lots of files will not be shown even if we use SMB3 or an older protocol.
As mentioned I believe this is a timeout problem.
Does anybody know how the CIFS/SMB timeout setting in Yosemite could be changed?

Dreamweaver saving files to wrong folders

I have so many problems with DW, but recently, I spent 4 days putting together a complex page only to have it saved to another folder. I resaved it to the correct folder, then deleted the first file. Obviously, I deleted everything, all my work and everything. Why does this keep happening? If I open a document in a specific site folder, why does it save it to another site folder?
I can see that I'm not saving things properly, and I guess I don't know how. I save the file to the site that I want, but it saves to a different site folder instead. Hope this makes sense. Any help is appreciated.

I keep getting an error when I try to log in to adobe, so if it's a long time between answers it means I can't get logged in.
Yes I'm working from a defined site. I begin a "new document from template", find the template, then begin the page. I realize I was working too fast, and got the wrong site when I saved the file, but why does DW do that? Why, If I'm working from a certain template that's defined to a specific site, am I allowed to save to a different site, even by accident? If I had been smart, I would have done it all on notepad, then just pasted it into the program.
Here's what I did:
1. New document from template
2. save page as:
3. The wrong site must have been called up and I didn't notice it.
I've built so many pages to this site without this problem, why does it save it to antoher site?
