Folio 9470m usb port failures

Has anyone else using this laptop model experienced issues with console cable connections?  I am finding that a serial console session to a given appliance that I am configuring might last me one minute if I'm lucky, or might freeze after a few seconds.  The only way I have found to address this is to reboot my laptop.  This is really not ideal when i am stuck in a freezing cold datacentre and am working to time constraints.   Plugging in the power helps (but not always) though this is far from ideal - what is the point of having a laptop that you can carry into a datacentre if it needs to be plugged into a power source before it works properly?!  Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Hello LadyBeader,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that half of the USB ports on your computer are not responsive to USB devices, and I would be happy to guide you towards a resolution! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop computer?
What version of Windows do you have installed on your computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
When you look in the Device Manager, how many devices do you see under the "Universal Serial BUs controllers"?
Have you tried plugging in different USB devices (thumb drive or smart phone) into the two ports with known issues?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7). This should help in returning functional recognition of your USB devices to your computer's USB ports.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

My Folio 9470m does not reconise my Toshiba PA5128 16GB USB 3 drive on any USB port.
I have uninstalled all USB controllers and windows has reinstalled with no luck.  Little blue light flashes for a couple of seconds when first plugged in then nothing.  Device manager can see the device but says no driver is installed.
Have updated the USB 3 controller.  No luck.
USB drive does work on other pc's
    Ideas?

Yes another USB 3 drive does work.  Still strange mine works on other pc's but not this one.  As mentioned above it's a Toshiba PA5128 16GB.
    Thanks.
    OK.
Then you need to use Toshiba's propietary utility to return the device to its default FAT32 state.
Otherwise, this is the end of the troubleshooting trail.
Your Folio's USB ports are OK.
That part number that you supplied is a no go.  There are some that are close in number, but not quite.

  • USB port failure on Satellite P300-172

I purchased this laptop in August 2008, I have had no problem with it until last week when the USB port that I plug the mouse in to stopped working.
I changed to the next one, this also wasnt working, but one on the other side worked ok. Used the laptop all that evening, next day it would not boot up, just got a set up screen ,exited that and it switched itself off, switched on again, power lights all came on, but just a blank screen. I noticed that the area round the defective USB s got really hot in a couple of minutes.
I feel the USB failure has caused some major fault, motherboard perhaps.
I paid a lot of money for this laptop and I expected it to last longer than 13 months. I tried phoning Toshiba but I cant get through, it keeps saying press this button for the dept you want but whatever button you press it comes back to the original message.
Asked a computer engineer if he had any idea what could be the problem with the laptop and he thinks that too much power is going in to it.
Has anyone got any idea what could be the cause of that, I am housebound and rely on the internet.

    Hi
Its pity to hear that your notebook started to malfunction but a hardware malfunction can always happen. Generally you should contact the ASP (authorized service partner) in your country for a help.
I dont know where you are from but I found this ASP database on the Toshiba European page:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com -> Support & Download -> Find an Authorized Service Provider
    Regarding your issue;
In most case the higher internal temperature could be the reason for such shut downs.
The notebook supports some sensors which would power off the notebook to prevent the hardware from damage the temperature can increase because the cooling modules are clogged due to the dust and debris furthermore a usage of non-Toshiba graphic card driver can lead to graphic card issues So its always advisable to use the Toshiba graphic drivers.
Anyway it looks like your notebook needs an help from a expert so get in contact with ASP in your country and ask for details.

  • USB port failure

I have 2 USB ports on my Powerbook G4 laptop but one has mysteriously stopped working after installing Palm desktop software. I removed the software but the 1 port still doesn't work. I don't have my original startup disc anymore either. Any ideas?

Hi, thashiznit48. If you need to use two USB ports at the same time, working around the bad port by buying a USB hub (preferably an externally powered one) will be a whole lot less trouble and expense than replacing your Powerbook's logic board, which is the other main alternative.

  • N8 USB port failure

The USB port on my N8 has stopped working after about a month. When I plug it into my pc it doesn't register as a device and it doesn't charge from the USB port. Any suggestions? Or is it back to the phone shop?

No fluff in port. Tried to connect mass storage device but Nokia adaptor cable CA-157 brings up error report on phone. Heard bad reports about apps like OVI store being deleted and not being able to be reinstalled after 4 button reset. Red led does not light when any cable is connected.

I guess that doesn't work so well :-)
Shortened story: A135-S2246 upgraded to Win 7.
System acts funky, so I do "clean install" of 7.
Dreaded BIOS password issue arises, but I get past it.
Like a good soldier, I upgrade the BIOS to 1.60 and install all of the Toshiba software for Win 7 clean installs.
The USB ports now tell me that every USB device I own is defective.
I've uninstalled all USB ports, drivers, etc., installed all drivers for my USB devices and tried to get Win 7 to manually recognize.
I've Google until my Googler is worn out and can't find a real fix.
    NO LOVE.
Before I order restore discs (FREE! with a cost of $24.95 to mail them to me), can anyone tell me if this is issue is resolvable?

    Satellite A135-S2246
I've uninstalled all USB ports, drivers, etc..
    A good start.
Try disabling Selective Suspend. Open registry editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to the following key.
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb
In this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and set its data to 1.
    Reboot.

  • Elitebook Folio 9470m - how to create recovery USB in preinstalled Win7?

Hi, this will be my first post here, so please be gentle
I have a new, pretty HP Elitebook Folio 9470m for testing - it came with preinstalled Windows 7 OS. I wanted to check some things, play around with it and as a cautious user I wanted to create a recovery media first. I have a 65GB flash drive which I've previously used as a recovery media for other notebooks and (as this model doesn't have a CD/DVD drive) I wanted to use it this time as well.
First I searched the web to find out how to create a recovery USB for this laptop but HP website gave me the info to use Recovery Manager which I don't have installed on this notebook - when I search for "recovery" I get something like "Create HP recovery CD". And when I try to use this I get an error regarding no writable media (even thou the flash drive is connected).
I stumbled upon a tip to F11 the laptop before boot, but I don't get the Recovery Manager either.
Should I download it and install from somewhere or is there another way to create the recovery stick for this notebook?
    This question was solved.

    Hi Neith,
You can use the HP Recovery Flash Disk utility for Windows 7.  There is more information about the utility on this HP web document.

  • Windows 8 (64-bit) Recovery USB for Folio 9470m

    Hi
    I received a new HP Elitebook Folio 9470m with Windows 8 (64-bit) pre-installed recently.
I have a 13Gb HP_Recovery partition which has 2Gb of free space but I would rather that partition was better utilised for my data and documents.
Basically, I want to format the HP_Recovery partition so I can use the 13Gb, but before I do that I want to make sure I have an OS install image that I can use if necessary at a later date.
I have no HP Recovery Manager software installed and there isn't a version for Windows 8 that I could find\download. I couldn't find one for Windows 7 (64-bit) but I'm not even sure that that version would work?
I saw a suggestion that pressing F11 at boot will enter the HP Recovery tool but when I tried this nothing happened.
How can I create a USB Windows 8 (64-bit) install image?
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Hello kitkat915,
Try with the basic driver with the following steps:
    1. Download the next driver to the windows desktop >> ljP1000_P1500-HB-pnp-win64-en.exe [1/1, 3.54M]
       2. Once downloaded in the desktop right click the driver file and select Properties.
         3. Click on Compatibility tab.
            4. Check the box where it says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
               5. In the dropdown option select "Windows 7"
          6. And in Privilege Level check the box where it says "Run this program as an administrator"
       7. Now click on Apply and OK buttons to close the Properties window.
    8. Then start the instalation, double click the driver file "ljP1000_P1500-HB-pnp-win64-en"

  • USB port power failure?

I'm a user of Macbook Pro 13'' Early 2011, OS X Lion pre-installed. I'm having a tiny problem with my USB port located the nearest from the front. Everytime I freshly boot-up to either Mac OS X or Window with a pre-plugged optical mouse I cannot move the cursor with my USB Mouse light show there is power on under the mouse. However, after I restart the computer again it able to moves with the mouse still plugged in.
And this USB port seem to confuse keyboard driver with USB flash under my Window 7. Thus I cannot properly eject my flash when I plug everything to this port or I lose the built-in keyboard.
P.S: I already try resetting every RAM configuration and do a clean install of Mac OS X. But  still not working.
    Desperately NEED HELP!!!
    Any suggestion, would be appreciated.

Did you try both USB ports? Apparently on a MacBook the front port is the one to use, as the back port shares its bus with the trackpad, camera, bluetooth, etc. See this web page:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/05/the-macbook-all/
That said, I am investigating this topic on behalf of two clients whose MacBooks appear to have intermittent USB connectivity.

  • Occassion failure of USB ports

Hi, am new here so sorry if this question has been asked before (although I did do a search but don't have the answer I want)
Have been having my MBP for a year now, I use a Logitech wireless mouse that hooked to the usb port.
From time to time the mouse just have no response - it's not the battery as I changed it ... and it usually work again if I changed to another USB port. But sometimes after a while the 2nd USB port failed as well.
So I thought it has something to with the mouse. Hmm not really.
Bought the wired Apple Keyboard few weeks ago, so I hooked it to the usb and hooked the mouse to the keyboard's usb port. The same thing happened -- from time to time (i said once every two weeks??), the usb port just suddenly refuse to response (well, at least the keyboard and mouse not responding). Change to another one may work, but sometimes may not. Usually have to restart the OS again. Hey I thought I am using a Mac, not Window ...
    So any clue? Thanks

Thanks, so how do I achieve it? And what is causing this problem?
    Thank you very much

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • Need help one USB Port on MacBook Pro not working

Its been a weak now and im getting tired of my MacBook pro USB not reading anything.. It wont read/connect usb drives, IPods/IPhones/IPads, and Android phones. I have tried the PRAM and SMC resets and nothing has worked i even left my Macbook pro off for a whole day. ITS ONLY ONE PORT NOT WORKING, i took it to bestbuy because its closest to me but geek squad just did what i explained above and told me get a USB hub and NO! i want to fix this issue... Anyone has had this happen can you let me know if its because the USB port is no longer working or a software issue... Also i keep getting this notification telling me USB devices disabled draining to much power but i have nothing connected!!
ps- my MacBook Pro is getting very hot fast and it happens when im not even using it, i get home and it very hot could there be another hardware failure i dont leave applications open when i sleep it.

It sounds like you might have a hardware problem. Your best bet is to go to the Genius Bar. The evaluation is free, and they'll fix it if you're under Applecare. Back up your stuff first though.

  • IPod and iPod shuffle not connecting to PC b/c of USB ports

My dilemma is that my PC doesn't like to recognize my 2nd gen. iPod or my 512MB iPod Shuffle in the USB ports. Whenever i connect them it says "Hi-speed USB device attached to non-Hi-speed USB Hub." Obviously the problem lies in the PC, but it always used to recognize the iPod and now it won't. I am curious if anyone knows what the problem may be (with the exception of getting hi-speed USB ports) if they could help me out please!

I've been an Apple supporter long enough to be labeled a fanboy by some, but I've seen their software quality control fall off a cliff over the last year, culminating with anything and everything related to iOS 8 and Yosemite. This release has been an utter failure. And I'm not referring to short term lapses like the calamitous iOS 8.0.1 upgrade that virtually bricked people's iPhones, since at least that was corrected in a relatively short amount of time. I'm referring to virtually every tent pole feature that hasn't even remotely worked as promised: iCloud Drive, iCloud Photo Library, Handoff, phone calls on Mac, AirDrop, etc. And now,. something as simple as recognizing a current generation iPod in iTunes. And that's not to mention the aforementioned software's impact to boot times on the Mac and battery life on the iPhone. It's sad and pathetic.
I may not have much of a choice when it comes to computers and smartphones, since everything else on the market is far worse, but I will not be spending another dime on this company's products or services until and unless they clean up their act.
