Follow-up question: Moving Root volume to new disk

When using Disk Utility to do the Restore (complete copy) from old to new, do the Volume Names need to be identical ?
e.g. will restoring from volume "bk250" to volume "bk400" screw up the aliases already on bk250 etc?
Thanks

  • How to remove root volume and unown disks for reuse?

    Hi,
I have two FAS3270s in HA running OnTAP 8.1.4P7. I need to remove all volumes/aggregates including the root volume and unown all the disks so some of the shelves can be reattached to a different controller. How do I go about doing it since the root volume is needed to run? Thanks,

All or some of the shelves from the HA pair.  If some, you are going to have to shutdown the controllers to remove the shelves..  If it's some, then you need to move /etc to a new root vol

  • Moving TM Backup to Larger Disk

Got a new 2 TB disk for TM. Existing disk is just 500 Gb. Followed procedures for moving the existing backups using Disk Utility Restore with the Erase option checked. Both disks formatted Extended + Journaled GUID partitions. Disk utility fails with "Catalog file on image/volume is too badly fragmented" "Could not validate source - Bad file descriptor". Yet when I run verify disk and repair disk no problems are found. Also ran Tech Tool Pro 5 and it reports no problems. How come Disk Utility reports no problems but then can't actually restore from that same disk that it says there are no problems with?

Can anyone refer me to where it is described that Snow Leopard's Finder does the right thing with these copies?
If you mean some official statement from Apple, we've never seen one. It works for me, and others (the completely rewritten Snow Leopard version only). But for some (including V.K., who's also a UNIX guru), it doesn't. (Another of Time Machine's little mysteries.)
I'd like to understand how it works and what the limitations are. Namely, I would like to drag in the TM tree of another machine and merge the two (on a NAS).
Not do-able by any method. And TM doesn't back up well, or at all, to most NAS devices: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
Some folks claim to have transferred local backups to a Time Capsule via an elaborate procedure of starting a backup to the TC, so TM makes a sparse bundle on it, then cancelling it, deleting the contents of the sparse bundle, then copying the local Backups.backupdb folder into it. Very cumbersome and time-consuming, not to mention "iffy."
But you cannot merge the backups of two different Macs into one sparse bundle and have it be usable at all. In theory, you might be able to put each into a separate sparse bundle (that's how TM backs up more than one Mac to the same network drive, such as a Time Capsule or shared drive on another Mac).
Is it a requirement that we start the copy from Backups.backupdb?
    Yes.
Or does SnowLeopard always do the right thing when copying hard links (which is hard to believe).
Copying a complete set of backups usually works.

I recently moved to Australia and received a new iphone with a local AUS number. I have a backup of my US iphone in the icloud. Question: when I activate my new AUS iphone which option should I choose - new phone or restore from backup?  I would like to have all my contacts, email, etc. however wasn't sure that option was appropriate since it is a different/new number and a new phone.

Yes, as new iPhone then restore from backup.

  • Moving Calendar to a New Computer & Moving Data: Downloads and Add-ons

Moving Calendar to a New Computer & Moving Data: Downloads and Add-ons
The handle says is all. Totally lost here & in a virtual house of cards. Please first see screen-shot.
I have the Mozilla calendar (Lightening?) program on my computer. Is this screen-shot Thunderbird or is it an add-on called Lightening that was added on to Thunderbird? I don't even recall how I acquired in a few years ago. Whatever it is I find in invaluable. Indispensable. Brilliantly conceived. A superb creation.
Notice that I have several calendars in different colors for different purposes and a long task agenda on the right. Wonderful program!! I absolutely love it! I can not afford to loose these calenders and this data. However, big caveat, entrusting my life (our lives) to it has become extremely dangerous for it's a virtual house of cards upon the purchase of a new computer. The move-over is more like a career most of us already have one. Need anyone really wonder why PC sales are down? Res ipsa loquitur.
    FIRST ISSUE:
I must move this/these Mozilla program/s and calendars over to the new computer but I don't have a clue where to begin. What must I download? Thunderbird? What must I add-on? Lightening? Is this a suite of programs? All I care about are my calendars and task agendas that you see in the screen-shot -- not any email programs etc. Just this personal management system that you see.
    SECOND ISSUE:
After I downloading, installing, and adding-on what I need, how do I then move (migrate) my profile (data) over to new computer?
Please know that I do know where that 'profile' and its .ics calendar profiles are stored. I am also well backed up. I just need to know how get (downloaded/install) what I need and move this over to the new computer. (See screen-shot)
First, what must I download and install and add on. Second how do I move this data/profile (a virtual Life) over to the new computer without it all coming down like a house of cards?
Please, unless it's all been documented in one location, a link to this and a link to that probably won't be very helpful. Anyone who can lay-out a simple, easy to follow plan (1, 2, 3, 4, done) will be a hero and make a significant contribution to people who dread buying a new computer for precisely these reasons. It will certainly encourage more people to use this absolutely wonderful personal management system. It's the best I've ever seen and I must keep it. But it's soooo risky.

Obviously the screen-shot is posted so show what I see now and want to see when I am done. Was the ''really ''not clear? Nothing could be more germane ("Germaine" is a person's name) than a visual that shows the multiple calendar dynamic and what I actually want to see nor better communicants the fact that all I want is that and not other programs in a suite – a question btw asked but not answered.
"I have no idea what the threshold issue is. Perhaps Zeno can assist you."
I now see Zeno's reply but I never got an email re: my questions and just noticed it. I will respond to him separately. But ''obviously ''the ''''threshold'''' issue is ISSUE ONE (1) exactly what, and only what, must I download and install.
Was that really not clear? That was not answered in your first reply. And since you here, later, state that Lightening does not need to be downloaded and installed how on earth could you presume the first threshold issue (question 1) was a joke?
Once again I wrote and you even quoted me “Please, unless it's ALL been documented in ONE LOCATION, a link to this and a link to that probably won't be very helpful. Anyone who can lay-out a simple, easy to follow plan (1, 2, 3, 4, done) ...”
As this exchange demonstrates, that statement has certainly proven to be correct.
You then wrote, “Read the question... the question is. How do I move my profile to a new computer? You are the one making much more of it than that. ... All covered in the link.”
What “the” (singular) of several links (plural) you provided are you talking abut? But no matter. No it was not "all" covered in the multiple links you sent which do not address the more important threshold question (1). The only issue you addressed was (2) data transfer which is secondary to the threshold issue which is ISSUE question one (1). Threshold issue/question presented: before we can go to question (2) we must address question (1).
As I stated “Please know that I do know where that 'profile' and its .ics calendar profiles are stored.”
You replied “No you do not. Local calendars are not stored in ICS files.”
First please notice you make no attempt to clarify where they are; but, once again, please read carefully. I did not say that the calendars are “stored in the ICS files” but that the .ics files ARE the calendars and I do know there they are stored.
Please see the screen-shot you claim is not germane? Each of those different colored calendars are (“not stored” in but are) .ics files that are stored in the Profile directory. In the directory c:\Users\myName\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird is a directory or folder called \Profiles and in that directory is a file named 9w2ydrc4.default. That file IS the profile. In that profile is a folder called “calendar-data” and in that folder are the calender .ics files that are the different colored calenders you see in the very germane screen-shot. So I do know where the calendars are. So I gather that all I copy into the Profiles directory is the file (profile) called 9w2ydrc4.default.
Again, as I wrote before, I do not want a full suite with email. So what do I downloaded and install to get only what you see in the screen-shot. I don't think we ever installed a full suite before. I never saw and email program. So, again,'' asked but not answered. ''
Then you stated, I do not need to download and install Lightening (please notice, is a partial answer to my first, threshold, question you presumed was a joke) but only Thunderbird since “Lightning is already in your profile so will move with it When you actually move the profile.”
Well, since you like to use links, exactly what is your documented Mozilla authority for that hearsay? Since I posted the question I have spent much time at Mozilla. Literally everything I have seen indicates I must first download and Thunderbird. But again, I do not want to and never did, install a full suite of programs and, as far as I know, there is no Mozilla mail or other suite programs on this (my current old computer) and there never were. So, once again'', asked and not answered).''
Everything at Mozilla states I must first download & install Thunderbird'' and then ''add-on Lightening. Nothing I have seen at Mozilla suggests otherwise or states that when we want to get Mozilla calendars over to a new computer we must first and *only* download and install Thunderbird and then just copy the profile (9w2ydrc4.default) into the 'Profiles' directory. Nothing I have seen at Mozilla suggests I do not have to download and install Lightening. So please show me where Mozilla documents that. ''' Please notice that even Zeno states, “You download AND INSTALL LIGHTNING as an add-on.'''”
Since this contradicts you do tell me: what is your Mozilla authority for claim that I do not need to download and install Lightening because it's already in my profile? I see nothing in my profile that suggests Lightening is there.
Finally, I wrote to you “ ...it is axiomatic that Windows transfer wizard does NOT transfer programs but only data. You did not know this?” I only wrote that because it appeared your reference to Transfer Wizard was a response to the threshold question of (1) how to I get the program onto the new machine. But your response is''' very '''strange for you wrote “You are the first person I have encountered that thought it did more than transfer data.” Show me where I said that. I said the opposite. How on earth did you come to that interpretation as a response to my simple and very clear statement that " ...it is axiomatic that Windows transfer wizard does''' NOT transfer programs but only data.'''.”

  • HT4527 Followed all steps - phone not syncing with new itunes/new pc

I have followed the steps in this article for moving itunes to a new computer. I had no problems with loading my music, itunes folder and mobilesync backups to an external drive and copying them all to a new pc. (Windows 8). Installed itunes onto the new computer and plugged in my phone and restored with last backup. All went well with that. The computer is authorised with my account.
THE PROBLEM:  Now when I plug in my iphone 5 to new itunes/ new windows 8 pc, it does not sync. It goes through 3 of 3 steps in about 2 seconds saying syncing, but not really syncing. I tested by adding a new app through the itunes and then synced phone. It didn't add it to the phone. Then I deleted it and added an app to the phone through the app store on the phone. When I synced the phone itunes failed to recognize a purchase on the phone that needed to be added to itunes.
So the itunes and phone are not actually in sync with each other and I don't know how to correct that. I have an ipad with retina display which needs to be added but I don't dare until I figure out what the problem is with syncing the devices to the new itunes/computer. It sees my phone when plugged in - I see my 4 pages of apps on the apps tab. I do not see my email accounts listed on the INFO tab. It just says "your contacts/calendars are being synced with your phone over the air." In the block where my accounts were listed on the old itunes/computer it is empty on this one. The phone is continuing to download email though.
Any help in getting the phone and new itunes in true sync again would be much appreciated!

Same problem with a mac. My computer will recognize the iPod on the desktop and itunes even opens up when I plug it in, but the iPod doesn't appear on the iTunes menu and won't let me sync.

  • I'm trying to download Firefox 4, but the following message comes up: Downloading/Volumes/firefox/o5we?qDe.part.part could not be saved, because an unknown error has occurred. Try saving to different location. What does this mean?

When trying to download to download Firefox 4, the following message comes up: Downloading/Volumes/Firefox/05weDe.part. could not be saved because of an unknown error. Try saving to a different location. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.10. I think I should be able to download Firefox 4. I have Firefox Version 3.6 now.

I am often getting this kind of error, although I believe it's less frequent with Firefox 4 than with the previous version. I do not know a proper solution, but I have noticed this:
    * If I simply try to re-download, it will fail again.
    * If I clear the list in the download window, I can download the same file without any trouble.
I believe the problem may be related to the antivirus software. The file is downloaded completely, and instead of moving it to the final position Firefox gets confused and deletes it.

Currently when a question is answered it will be linked to the question. We sometimes have participants requiring further information about the same question, but Adobe Connect does not seem to allow participants to click the response and add follow up questions. As a presenter you can click on answered questions and add more but participants always have to submit new unlinked questions. • Follow-up question on ZXM08U16 table E_TDRSEG  (function group XM08)

Rich's suggestion worked (on how to retype the E_TDRSEG table received from MIRO by include ZXM08U16 in the function group XM08.
Before asking my new follow-up question, let me recap the original SAP typing of this table and the way I've retyped it (following Rich's instructions):
    The original SAP typing is:
    E_TDRSEG TYPE  MMCR_TDRSEG
    TYPES: mmcr_tdrseg TYPE mmcr_drseg OCCURS 0,
    TYPES: BEGIN OF mmcr_drseg_co.
            INCLUDE STRUCTURE cobl_mrm_d.
TYPES: cr LIKE drseg_cr    OCCURS 0,
           unpl_refwr TYPE refwr,
           END OF mmcr_drseg_co.
    TYPES: BEGIN OF mmcr_drseg.
            INCLUDE STRUCTURE drseg.
TYPES: cr LIKE drseg_cr OCCURS 0,
           co TYPE mmcr_drseg_co OCCURS 0,
           sm LIKE drseg_sm OCCURS 0,
           charact TYPE rbcharact_instance OCCURS 3,

           uebgmat  TYPE matnr,

           selkz_db TYPE selkz,
rblgp_old TYPE rblgp,           "rblgp before aggregation
           END OF mmcr_drseg.
    I retyped this as follows:
    TYPES:
      ty_cobl_mrm_d        TYPE cobl_mrm_d,
ty_drseg_cr          TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF drseg_cr with DEFAULT KEY,
ty_drseg_sm          TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF drseg_sm with DEFAULT KEY,
ty_charact           TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF rbcharact_instance with DEFAULT KEY,
      BEGIN OF ty_mmcr_drseg_co.
        INCLUDE            TYPE ty_cobl_mrm_d.
        TYPES:
          cr               TYPE ty_drseg_cr ,
          unpl_refwr       TYPE refwr,
      END OF   ty_mmcr_drseg_co,
ty_co                TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF ty_mmcr_drseg_co
                           WITH DEFAULT KEY,
      BEGIN OF ty_mmcr_drseg.
        INCLUDE            TYPE drseg.
        TYPES:
          cr               TYPE ty_drseg_cr,
          co               TYPE ty_co,

          selkz_db         TYPE selkz,
rblgp_old        TYPE rblgp,             "rblgp before aggregation
      END OF   ty_mmcr_drseg.
      DATA:
        x_mmcr_drseg       TYPE mmcr_drseg,
        x_mmcr_drseg_oo    TYPE ty_mmcr_drseg,
it_mmcr_drseg      TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF ty_mmcr_drseg,

        x_drseg_sm         TYPE drseg_sm,
        x_drseg_co         TYPE ty_mmcr_drseg_co.
But here's my question.  To load the new table from the SAP table, I've had to use the code below.  Is there any way to simplify this code?  (I don't think there is because the drseg structure is included in the old and the new, so you can't simply say new-drseg = old-drseg.  But maybe there's another way to do it and I'm not seeing it.  Also, note that I had to loop on each of  the inner three tables because it wouldn't compile when I tried statements of the form "new-table[] = old-table[].)

  • Need assistance moving images to a new hard drive. can you help?

    1. My images are stored on an Apple Airport drive, connected wirelessly.
    2. I have moved them to a new USB connected External HD.
3 should I also copy the IRDATA and IRCAT Lightroom directory to the new drive before I synch the new directory within lightroom?

    Lightroom catalog FAQ
how do I move a catalog?
You can move your catalog to a different location on your computer's hard drive, to an external disk, or to another computer altogether. Simply use the Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac OS) to drag or copy the following files to the new location:
    Catalog: [catalog name].lrcat
    Previews: [catalog name] Previews.lrdata
Smart Previews (Lightroom 5 only): [catalog name] Smart Previews.lrdata
Notice that you're not moving any photos, nor are you moving the Lightroom application itself. If Lightroom can't find the catalog or your photos after you move a catalog, see Lightroom can't find my catalog. How do I find it? Or, My catalog can't find my photos. How do I find them?
To transfer a catalog between a Windows computer and a Mac, copy your catalog, preview, and image files from the original computer onto a flash or other external drive. Then, attach that drive to the second computer and copy the files to the desired location on the second computer.
For a video on how to move a catalog between two computers, watch Julieanne Kost's How to migrate Lightroom to another computer on Adobe TV.

  • Migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new san hardware

We are getting ready to migrate from server core 2008 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on an iscsi san to server core 2012 r2 hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on a new iscsi san.
I've been searching for a "best practices" article for this but have been coming up short.  The information I have found either pertains to migrating from 2008 r2 to 2012 r2 with failover cluster volumes on the same hardware, or migrating
to different hardware without failover cluster volumes.
If there is anyone out there that has completed a similar migration, it would be great to hear any feedback you may have on your experiences.
Currently, my approach is as follows:
    1. Configure new hyper-v with failover cluster volumes on new SAN with new 2012 r2 hostnodes and 2012 r2 management server
    2. Turn off the virtual machines on old 2008 r2 hyper-v hostnodes
    3. Stop the VMMS service on the 2008 r2 hostnodes
    4. copy the virtual machine files and folders over to the new failover cluster volumes
    5. Import vm's into server 2012 r2 hyper-v.
Any feedback on the opertain I have in mind would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Yes , I agree with that "file copy " can achieve migration.
Also you can try "copy cluster wizard " :

  • Moving photos to a new HDD. Getting PSE10 to recognise the move

Hi all. My PSE10 is now working a treat after all the help I got from the forum so I thought I'd ask you knowledgeable chaps another question to save me buggering things up!!
My original HDD is full to capacity. I have purchased and installed a second internal HDD which I intend to transfer all my documents, photos, videos and music onto leaving only programs and the OS on the old HDD and creating a bit of space.
How can I transfer my whole library over? Should I do a restore? Will it ask me where to restore to so I can tell it to my new HDD? Can I then just delete all the photos of my old drive? Is the move option better? Just want to avoid a world of pain when I do the swap!

    Pilsburypie wrote:
Yep. You have certainly understood. I shall try this and report back. Is there any benefit of doing this as my main objective was to create space on my full original HDD which has already been achieved by moving the mass of photos over?
    Cheers for your help.
The benefit will be the transfer of the catalog to the new disk. You'll save the disk space taken by the catalog : simply locate the catalog as stated in my previous post and look at the disk space taken by the catalog folder. I do not see any significant disadvantage in moving the catalog.

  • Moving PS to a new computer. Serial number does not work.

Moved PS to a new computer. Get the following error message when i try to enter serial number, "Serial Number you provided is valid but a qualifying product could not be found on this computer".

There should be an option to go to another screen where you enter the serial # from a qualifying previous version. So if you are installing CS6 you would need to enter the serial # from your older CS5 or maybe CS4. Same goes if you are installing CS5. You would need the serial # from CS4 or CS3.
Hopefully you still have the boxes from those older versions and or you recorded the serial # for them if you bought the Downloaded version.
If not then it is time to Upgrade to the subscription based PS CC or buy a Full version of CS6.

I believe part of the recovery process is you get an e-mail allowing you to reset questions.  If that e-mail isn't correct either because your son set it up then you really have no option but to ask Apple again.  They are getting strict abotu security and given the number of "My iTunes account got hacked" posts here I can guess why.  They have no way of knowing you really are the owner of the account.  It's like me going to a policeman and saying, "See that car over there?  That is mine, can you open the door for me?" and the police opening it on that basis alone.

Luke,<BR><BR>Out of curiosity.....where did you find this document. I contacted support Friday because we are planning on moving Intelligence to a new server as well but they basically told me to login to e-support and look for the document there. I have been unable to locate this online. Can you perhaps enlighten me as to where I may be able to find this? I saw you post and figured I'd ask before calling support back later this morning.<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>Bob
