Follow up question on harddrive failure epidemic

Can anyone help with some advice on next steps? I have an iMac that I can hook MacBook up to to try and do some data recovery, but the MacBook hard drive doesn't show up anywhere, not even when started up as external drive, so I'm not sure this is an option? Is only option to buy an actual CD of utility and run it on MacBook? I'd love to download a utility asap and do it from iMac, but not sure how that is done.
Also, after I've recovered anything (if i do!), what is the next step to actually fixing the MacBook, and can I do it myself if I don't know much about the inner workings of a computer? (ie: can I randomly buy a new hard drive and put it in myself?)
Or am I better off just taking it to an apple store? hm.
Thanks in advance

  • Macbook Harddrive Failure -- Possible to retrieve data??

Hi! Last week my Macbook's screen displayed what they call the 'question mark of doom' (the folder with the '?' sign). I tried troubleshooting myself according the the Apple manual, but to no avail, so I took it down the the Apple store -- they said it was possibly harddrive failure, which is really bad news for me =( I didn't backup my data and photos for the last 2 years, and of course they're really important to me. There weren't any signs of defect earlier, so that's why I didn't expect this would happen to my Macbook. Now they've sent it to get it repaired, the engineer hasn't given me a call yet, but I'm really worried. Is it possible to recover my data from the old disk, if it's undetectable on my Macbook?

if Apple has the computer, I doubt you will see that drive again. They will replace it and keep your old drive. They will not attempt to recover anything for you. You should have tried that before you sent it in. Data Rescue II or Boomerang are two utilities used for that. Also, DIskWarrior may have repaired the drive.

  • Follow up question about image not looking good in canvas-Shane?

I guess this is a follow up question for Shane....
You wrote this in response to someone a year ago which helped me out.
Shane's Stock Answer #49 - Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?
Well... the viewer is just that-- a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.
For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720x480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot. DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.
Same with picture files. HIgh res pics now adopt the sequence settings and will render to those specs, and most likely they are not as high quality.
So, based on your answer, I made an HDV sequence, dropped my DVCPro50-NTSC footage and my tiffs into the sequence and now the stills look great. Is this an okay workaround or do you have another suggestion? I'm worried about this HD sequence taking too long to make a compressed QT from in the end.
    Thanks!

Photo JPEG is a good option.  But this all depends on what your final output will be.  If you are going to make a DVD, then that is SD, so using an HD sequence setting makes no sense.  Photo JPEG is good, but not realtime in FCP.  DV50 or ProRes NTSC are good options.
Unless you are making an HD master...in which case ProRes 422 for HD is good

Currently when a question is answered it will be linked to the question. We sometimes have participants requiring further information about the same question, but Adobe Connect does not seem to allow participants to click the response and add follow up questions. As a presenter you can click on answered questions and add more but participants always have to submit new unlinked questions. Is there a way for participants to ask follow up questions in Q&A pod so that they are threaded to their original question?

  • IMovie and external hard drive: follow up question

This is a follow up question from the iMovie 6 forum. Hopefully, this question will help the poster on that forum as well. I, too, am working on multiple iMovie 5.0.2 projects at the same time and am running out of hard disk space. I would like to transfer remaining miniDV tape to an external hard drive and, when finished, transfer these clips from the external hard drive to the current iMovie project in my Powerbook, one project at a time. Is this possible ? Will I transfer files from the external hard drive to the Powerbook hard drive and then to iMovie, or directly from the external hard drive to iMovie ? Do I have to format the external drive to Mac OS Extended as advised in iMovie 6 forum in order to transfer miniDV tape to the external hard drive ? When pressing the erase tab to format the external hard drive, will this erase files already on the hard drive before formatting ? Can I transfer projects I am not working on from iMovie to the external hard drive and then transfer them back to the Powerbook when it is time to work on them ? Sorry about all the questions but I need to think very simple-minded when it comes to computer related issues. Thanks for your help.

I was able to use and store iMovie in the external hard drive using my Powerbook as a monitor, so I presume it is formatted correctly
Sorry, but you cannot assume the drive is formatted correctly. iMovie doesn't tell you the drive format is incompatible with iMovie. (it should, but it doesn't.) Some iMovie project features can be saved and some cannot.
It's easy to check the disk format. In the Finder, click on the drive icon and choose File > Get Info from the Finder menubar. The window that opens shows the disk Format. You want it to say "Mac OS Extended". "(Journaled)" is optional.
With some drives, sometimes even that can be wrong. To be sure, use Disk Utility to check the format. When you click on the drive in the list along the left side of the Disk Utility window, the format is displayed at the bottom of the window.
Always, always, always check the disk format before using a drive with iMovie.

  • Follow up question...

I just purchased a Airport Extreme from the Apple Store yesterday. I purchased it to extend/share my iPhone 5 hotspot. I have figured out how to have AEBS join my hotspot, but it does not seem to have access on the Ethernet ports in the back?? This is my needed feature, unfortunately I live in an area that only offers DSL and only 2.5mbps.. .  Using my phone I'm able to receive 10-20mbps on LTE/4G, and fortunately for me I have unlimited data on my hotspot. So I'm set for the wireless devices in my home, but struggling getting wired devices working....
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Tim

This solved my question by Bob Timmons  on Nov 28, 2013 3:33 PM
No, only the AirPort Express. There are 2 Ethernet ports on the Express. If you need more, you can add an Ethernet switch.
The Express has a special feature called ProxySTA that allows it to join a network and the Ethernet ports will be enabled when it does this.
Might be fun to ask one of the sales guys what exactly ProxySTA is and what it does before you explain it to them. Even the "genius" may not know.
    See the answer in context
    Follow Up Question----
I asked the apple salesperson about proxySTA, first I got a blank stare then, some nonsense to attempt they knew what it was.
So I picked up the Express, set it up to join my hotspot and it works really well!!! The only problem is the hotspot only allows five connections. The express eats one, that only leaves four! Is there another way to set up the express so it can handle the dhcp so my hotspot only sees the one connection to the express??
    Thanks,
    Tim

Now please perform a hard reset on the second Express by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds, then release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the first "joining" Express goes to the WAN "O" port on the second Express creating a wireless network.
Don't worry about the Double NAT message for now, just make sure that you can now log on to the Internet through the second Express wireless network.
You may need to power off both Express devices and restart the "joining" Express first, then start up the "creating" Express.
Once you verify that everything is working, you can go back in using AirPort Utillty and click to ignore the Double NAT so that a green light will be displayed on the second Express.

But here's my question.  To load the new table from the SAP table, I've had to use the code below.  Is there any way to simplify this code?  (I don't think there is because the drseg structure is included in the old and the new, so you can't simply say new-drseg = old-drseg.  But maybe there's another way to do it and I'm not seeing it.  Also, note that I had to loop on each of  the inner three tables because it wouldn't compile when I tried statements of the form "new-table[] = old-table[].)

  • 24" iMac harddrive failures abounding!!!!!!

Every one of our 24" iMac harddrives have failed over the past year.
    Let me explain......
We have 20 - 24" iMacs, 18 - 20" iMacs. All purchaced in bulk in 2007 and 2008. We are basially a Mac shop that comprises of 30% Macs, the rest PC.
The first hardrive failure was in November of 2009. From that point till now we have had to replace 12 drives, all on the 24" iMacs. As a precation, we are replacing drives in two more iMacs that are out of warranty. Leaving 4 iMacs that are still under warranty.
Given the extent of the failures we are experiencing and regardless of any warranty, Apple should be replacing the drives for us. They won't because the one year warranty expired on many of these a few months ago.
Let me point out, that none of the 20" iMacs have had harddrive failures.
It is hardly a coincidence. This points to bad design and a failure for Apple to control quality. If someone from Apple wants to contact me about this, please do so through this post.

Yeah, I had to do a few HDD and even logic board replacements on Mid-2007 24" iMacs once upon a time. Strangely enough, people here didn't want to believe me.
It was at a university where they had two labs full of 20" models, and only a handful of 24" models, but only the 24" ones had a problem. Just be sure you catch it quick, because they will roast your logic board if you don't.
This is also why you should try to stagger your purchasing. Replace a few systems every month, so if there's a bad run of systems, you won't have a bunch of systems down at the same time.

  • Why can't I ask any follow-up questions?

Why is my earlier message marked 'Read Only' . . . it's the only one I can find that is. I have follow-up questions, and can't find anything in the Help section that addresses 'Read only'.

deweyrich, I don't know how it got marked as such, but I've fixed it.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Jerry.

  • Harddrive failures? Maybe not

Since the start of this year I've had a few, seeming, internal harddrive failures in my machine. It's a long story, but the details are important. You can scan my post history of the issues here:

Bottom line is that, before this latest incident, I went for over a month without any problems. On Sunday my machine froze and I couldn't restart from the internal. I booted from a LaCie firewire and tried to repair the drive with both DW and DU. Like the three previous times, implications were that my internal was toast. I couldn't erase or re-partition without:
    - input/output error
    or
    - Disk could not be unmounted
On a whim last night, I pulled the internal (WD Caviar 320GB) and swapped it into one of my LaCie enclosures. It partitioned fine, so I took it another step and zeroed all data. That took about 4 - 5 hours, but it worked. I reinstalled Leopard, ran all updates and it worked fine. Note that on all previous failures this year, I never had problems booting off of my Firewire "Emergency" drive, just internals. Also, whenever I ran Techtool Pro 4 after each failure, every test came back "passed".
After searching the boards I thought that the issue could be related to the power supply, except if that were the case, wouldn't there be problems when booted from an external? FYI - My machine was one covered by an extended warranty because of defective power supplies and it was replaced by Apple. Possible thermal issues or a failing disk controller? I could just get another enclosure and not use the internal bus, but would like to understand the root of this problem. Sorry for the length of this post, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your response. I'm not actually using a UPS, just surge protectors and all peripherals are plugged into one. Good thought about the temp sensor. It had occurred to me with the second replacement drive and I made sure that it hadn't come loose on the board end of the cable. Vents have been cleaned out (and on a fairly regular basis...I'm a neat freak).
I appreciate other sets of eyes - making sure I'm not overlooking the obvious. When the original WD 80GB began acting up, I figured, no big deal, drives get old and fail. The second drive failure I blamed myself for being cheap and buying a refurbed WD 80GB. The third drive was a brand new WD 320GB and I was baffled because the symptoms were the same; an unexpected freeze, on restart it wouldn't boot; DW couldn't repair; DU couldn't reformat or repartition. I chalked it up to a defective drive and WD sent me a new one. But the replacement WD drive too?!
Here are the exact events leading up to this recent hd fu. Was editing a photo in Photoshop (two programs were opened, Firefox and Photoshop). I stopped to eat dinner and left the programs opened. Went back after dinner and the computer was frozen so I used the power button to shutdown, then restarted. I felt like I was in the movie Ground Hog Day! *Note that it's been almost a full day booting off of the drive since putting it in an enclosure, etc. External drives have their own power supply, so could this point to a failing iMac power supply (because it powers the internal bus)? I just can't imagine any crash trashing the Volume Header, catalogue, etc. so badly that I can't reformat.

  • Less dumb follow-up question about super/sub classes in WDJ?

This is a follow-up question to the question which Maksim answered in this thread:
Dumb question about super/sub classes in WDJ
    Question:
Is there any kind of weird C++-like statement that you can put at the top of a WDJ module to force the module to interpret any reference to superclass A as a reference to some specific subclass B of A ???

    David,
    1. Java has no preprocessor, so C++ tricks are not available. Also I would not recommend such tricks even in C++ if you don't want to turn your colleagues working with same code into personal enemies.
    2. The phrase "easier to create a WDJ custom class loader " makes me smile. First, it's not that simple to interfere WDJ class loading scheme. Plus custom class loaders is not trivial Java topic per se.
    3. The problem "replace all A-s with B-s" is typically solved using one or another GoF creation patterns, like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_factory_pattern">Abstract Factory</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_method_pattern">Factory Method</a>. You may use them with custom class loader, if you really want to
By the way, all UI controls in WD are created using Abstract Factory (role played by view). So you may use this as good example.

  • Reinstalling XI following harddrive failure

Am I allowed to reinstall the PDF program after a complete reinstall of Windows XL Pro?

    Hi Shediac2,
You may reinstall the Acrobat XI program on your machine without any issue. You just need to keep in mind that any Adobe perpetual single license you can get it installed on 2 machines but cannot use it simultaneously on both the machines but one at a time.
