Follow up question...

I just purchased a Airport Extreme from the Apple Store yesterday. I purchased it to extend/share my iPhone 5 hotspot. I have figured out how to have AEBS join my hotspot, but it does not seem to have access on the Ethernet ports in the back?? This is my needed feature, unfortunately I live in an area that only offers DSL and only 2.5mbps.. .  Using my phone I'm able to receive 10-20mbps on LTE/4G, and fortunately for me I have unlimited data on my hotspot. So I'm set for the wireless devices in my home, but struggling getting wired devices working....
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Tim

No, only the AirPort Express. There are 2 Ethernet ports on the Express. If you need more, you can add an Ethernet switch.
The Express has a special feature called ProxySTA that allows it to join a network and the Ethernet ports will be enabled when it does this.
Might be fun to ask one of the sales guys what exactly ProxySTA is and what it does before you explain it to them. Even the "genius" may not know.
See the answer in context
Follow Up Question----
I asked the apple salesperson about proxySTA, first I got a blank stare then, some nonsense to attempt they knew what it was.
So I picked up the Express, set it up to join my hotspot and it works really well!!! The only problem is the hotspot only allows five connections. The express eats one, that only leaves four! Is there another way to set up the express so it can handle the dhcp so my hotspot only sees the one connection to the express??
Thanks,
Tim

Now please perform a hard reset on the second Express by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds, then release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the first "joining" Express goes to the WAN "O" port on the second Express creating a wireless network.
Don't worry about the Double NAT message for now, just make sure that you can now log on to the Internet through the second Express wireless network.
You may need to power off both Express devices and restart the "joining" Express first, then start up the "creating" Express.
Once you verify that everything is working, you can go back in using AirPort Utillty and click to ignore the Double NAT so that a green light will be displayed on the second Express.

  • Follow up question about image not looking good in canvas-Shane?

I guess this is a follow up question for Shane....
You wrote this in response to someone a year ago which helped me out.
Shane's Stock Answer #49 - Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?
Well... the viewer is just that-- a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.
For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720x480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot. DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.
Same with picture files. HIgh res pics now adopt the sequence settings and will render to those specs, and most likely they are not as high quality.
So, based on your answer, I made an HDV sequence, dropped my DVCPro50-NTSC footage and my tiffs into the sequence and now the stills look great. Is this an okay workaround or do you have another suggestion? I'm worried about this HD sequence taking too long to make a compressed QT from in the end.
    Thanks!

Photo JPEG is a good option.  But this all depends on what your final output will be.  If you are going to make a DVD, then that is SD, so using an HD sequence setting makes no sense.  Photo JPEG is good, but not realtime in FCP.  DV50 or ProRes NTSC are good options.
Unless you are making an HD master...in which case ProRes 422 for HD is good

Currently when a question is answered it will be linked to the question. We sometimes have participants requiring further information about the same question, but Adobe Connect does not seem to allow participants to click the response and add follow up questions. As a presenter you can click on answered questions and add more but participants always have to submit new unlinked questions. Is there a way for participants to ask follow up questions in Q&A pod so that they are threaded to their original question?

  • IMovie and external hard drive: follow up question

This is a follow up question from the iMovie 6 forum. Hopefully, this question will help the poster on that forum as well. I, too, am working on multiple iMovie 5.0.2 projects at the same time and am running out of hard disk space. I would like to transfer remaining miniDV tape to an external hard drive and, when finished, transfer these clips from the external hard drive to the current iMovie project in my Powerbook, one project at a time. Is this possible ? Will I transfer files from the external hard drive to the Powerbook hard drive and then to iMovie, or directly from the external hard drive to iMovie ? Do I have to format the external drive to Mac OS Extended as advised in iMovie 6 forum in order to transfer miniDV tape to the external hard drive ? When pressing the erase tab to format the external hard drive, will this erase files already on the hard drive before formatting ? Can I transfer projects I am not working on from iMovie to the external hard drive and then transfer them back to the Powerbook when it is time to work on them ? Sorry about all the questions but I need to think very simple-minded when it comes to computer related issues. Thanks for your help.

I was able to use and store iMovie in the external hard drive using my Powerbook as a monitor, so I presume it is formatted correctly
Sorry, but you cannot assume the drive is formatted correctly. iMovie doesn't tell you the drive format is incompatible with iMovie. (it should, but it doesn't.) Some iMovie project features can be saved and some cannot.
It's easy to check the disk format. In the Finder, click on the drive icon and choose File > Get Info from the Finder menubar. The window that opens shows the disk Format. You want it to say "Mac OS Extended". "(Journaled)" is optional.
With some drives, sometimes even that can be wrong. To be sure, use Disk Utility to check the format. When you click on the drive in the list along the left side of the Disk Utility window, the format is displayed at the bottom of the window.
Always, always, always check the disk format before using a drive with iMovie.

  • Follow-up question on ZXM08U16 table E_TDRSEG  (function group XM08)

Rich's suggestion worked (on how to retype the E_TDRSEG table received from MIRO by include ZXM08U16 in the function group XM08.

    I retyped this as follows:

      END OF   ty_mmcr_drseg.
      DATA:

But here's my question.  To load the new table from the SAP table, I've had to use the code below.  Is there any way to simplify this code?  (I don't think there is because the drseg structure is included in the old and the new, so you can't simply say new-drseg = old-drseg.  But maybe there's another way to do it and I'm not seeing it.  Also, note that I had to loop on each of  the inner three tables because it wouldn't compile when I tried statements of the form "new-table[] = old-table[].)

  • Less dumb follow-up question about super/sub classes in WDJ?

This is a follow-up question to the question which Maksim answered in this thread:
Dumb question about super/sub classes in WDJ
    Question:
Is there any kind of weird C++-like statement that you can put at the top of a WDJ module to force the module to interpret any reference to superclass A as a reference to some specific subclass B of A ???

    David,
    1. Java has no preprocessor, so C++ tricks are not available. Also I would not recommend such tricks even in C++ if you don't want to turn your colleagues working with same code into personal enemies.
    2. The phrase "easier to create a WDJ custom class loader " makes me smile. First, it's not that simple to interfere WDJ class loading scheme. Plus custom class loaders is not trivial Java topic per se.
    3. The problem "replace all A-s with B-s" is typically solved using one or another GoF creation patterns, like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_factory_pattern">Abstract Factory</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_method_pattern">Factory Method</a>. You may use them with custom class loader, if you really want to
By the way, all UI controls in WD are created using Abstract Factory (role played by view). So you may use this as good example.

  • Follow up question on reporting capabilities.

I just need to follow up to my orignial question to make sure I am making sense.  I wondered if there was intelligence in forms central to query incoming data- ie. pull a report on what email addresses viewed a form.  An analogy of the type of report would be if you wanted to pull a report on incoming calls to your cell phone- for this type of query you would not need to know who your outgoing calls were- you would be trying to determine incoming information.  Thanks again for the help.

If you asked for email address in your form then you would know (its in the response table). If you didn't ask for an email then there is no way to know.

  • Follow Up Question/Second User Account... Separate iTunes?

As a follow up to my last question (Thanks Niel) I'd like to know if I decide not to share my iTunes with them (different tastes, etc) can they have their own separate iTunes accounts (same computer)? If so...
Do they have to open an iTunes store account? Can I use the same credit card I use for my account?
Can they just import music off their cd's without opening an store account?
Anything else I'm not thinking of I might need to know?
    Thanks for all help!

I'd like to know if I decide not to share my iTunes with them (different tastes, etc) can they have their own separate iTunes accounts (same computer)?
    Yes.
Easiest way is to create a separate computer login. They will have their own iTunes library.
Do they have to open an iTunes store account?
Only if they wish to purchase from the iTunes store.
Can I use the same credit card I use for my account?
    Yes.
Can they just import music off their cd's without opening an store account?
    Yes.

  • MB Pro 13 (2010) BSOD in Boot Camp followed by question mark folder

Hello, good folks of the Apple support communities. Let me describe my problem to you guys and maybe you'll help me figure out what's wrong because I'm at my wit's end.
A couple of months ago, my MBP13 randomly gave me a BSOD after which it refused to load - just gave me a blinking cursor. I was able to narrow that down to a somehow-messed up boot sequence. I was able to fix it from the Windows 7 repair console. I thought that this time around my situation would be similar, but I haven't been that lucky. So, let me paint the picture of what happened this time.
Sitting in my kitchen, laptop on the counter, plugged in, having a conversation on Trillian and Skype. I pick it up and move to another room, sit down and try to continue and for a couple of minutes everything is fine, but then the cursor freezes and I get a BSOD, followed by an illuminated dark screen. All my attempts to resuscitate prove futile - any time I press the power button, all I get is that gray screen. I reset the PRAM and then got the white screen that usually appears when I just power on. Unfortunately, no choices of boot (Mac of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit which I'm running in Boot Camp) - and then the flashing folder with question mark followed. I was 15 minutes away from driving off to the airport, needing to get on a plane, so I grabbed the MBP, the OSX DVD and the Windows DVD and an external hard drive (2.5 inch SATA) and went to the airport. Started reading support forums and narrowed the issue down to potential HD issues. So I tried first to re-seat the drive - no dice. Then I tried booting from the OSX DVD and going to disk utility - the HD was not being recognized. Same story with the Windows 7 DVD. Mid-flight I disassembled the external drive and swapped the two - the external was being picked up, no problem, so I figured it was a hard drive issue, not a motherboard one, say.
So, I'm thinking, great, my HD is fried. I've got a whole bunch of data on it that I wanted to salvage (primarily on the Boot Camp partition), so I swapped the MBP drive into the enclosure and hooked it up to a buddy's laptop. To my surprise, Windows 7 on his Dell picked it up without a problem (only Boot Camp, not the Mac part, but since Mac isn't formatted for Windows that probably shouldn't have been surprising) and after futzing with the permissions, I was able to start backing stuff up - never finished, though, figuring that if it's being picked up, I'd just do it later. But I needed a functioning laptop, so I went to Best Buy and picked up a Momentus XT 500GB, installed it and thought I'd be able to install an OS on it. Nope. Windows never even saw the drive and OSX tried to format it but couldn't allocate memory, according to the report. So back to BB the Seagate went. I am coming back to school tomorrow and should be able to have our IT people look at it, but what do you guys think are my best and worst case scenarios and options here? If the Mac HD is completely toast, why would it get picked up just like that via USB? And if it's not toast, can I somehow still boot it? Or should I just salvage what files I have and bite the bullet with a new HD? And which one, if that's the case, since the Momentus crapped out on me big time (in fairness, I later read about all its problems and realized I was better off without it). Or should I just cut my losses, sell the MBP and find myself another computer, perhaps an ultrabook?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Ideally I would like to spend as little as possible while restoring my pre-BSOD situation as much as possible, as you might surmise, so I really don't want to buy a new laptop quite yet...

Thanks for the detailed explanation! If MacBook supports AHCI/SATA only in native “UEFI mode”, while reverting back to PATA/IDE in legacy “BIOS mode”, then it could make perfect sense to use UEFI to make sure that technology like Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is employed, as it may give noticeable performance improvements for certain operations: www.happysysadm.com/2012/12/intel-g530-nas-performance-part-3.html. I wonder how do you get Windows 8 x64 with EFI bootloader installed on MacBook?
Simply choosing EFI Boot (“Some EFI platforms support both UEFI and BIOS firmware. On some of those systems, it is not always clear if the default DVD boot option is an EFI or BIOS boot option. On these systems, using the EFI shell command may be required. If you do not specifically start Windows Setup by using the EFI boot entry, the default firmware boot entry for BIOS may be used. If Windows Setup starts in BIOS mode on a combined EFI/BIOS system, the ESP and MSR partitions are not created.”) from Win8 x64 DVD when installing on blank HDD would yield “The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed" message. Also, if the hard drive was not in SATA mode during Windows installation, registry tweaking may be required before switching from PATA to SATA. Do you do registry tweaking and EFI bootloader configuration manually after a copy of Windows was installed in its dedicated partition in a regular way?

  • Showplan follow up question

Follow up on question regarding thread:

The second query (after updated index), any reason why the operation is TblLkTtreeScan instead of RowLkTtreeScan? I updated the optimizer stats and it still shows up as a TblLkTtreeScan.
What's the difference between TblLkTtreeScan and RowLkTtreeScan and why would one be used over the other?
    Thanks.

    Hi Beejal,
Whether it uses TblLkTtreeScan and RowLkTtreeScan also depends on how many rows you have in the table and how many rows the query returns. The algorithm is a little complicated. Are you sure you want all the details? :)
"It will use a table level lock if it is more efficient that using multiple row locks." As Chris mentioned in the other thread, the optimizer chooses the most efficient plan if it has the latest stats.

  • Seeing unknown servers on my network (Follow-up Question)

This is basically a further question as to the issues raised in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6803445&#6827736
Okay..... so i've gone searching trying to find something in regards to this problem and thus far have got nothing but it is more that i am worried from a security perspective who this extra "server" is. If it has been discussed at length please post a link to the solution please...
So i've got this "pc server" connected to my network under "mac001ec213105b" and have gone through the following steps:
    1. I was using an extreme (main) and express (repeater/extender) but after my brother got a new iMac there was no need for the express. So i've just got the extreme running, changed the network name, changed the name of the extreme, changed the password and it initially worked before it reappeared 10 minutes later.
    2. From another thread i went through the following (AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logging & SNMP > Logs and Statistics) to see who was logged into the network. In wireless clients, all the computers running are accounted for however DHCP clients 3 different MAC addresses come up. One came up as soon as i turned on my ps3 and two i have no idea about.... One of them is in the Finder sidebar when connecting to shared computers and the other is a mystery?
So my question is who are the randoms? Obviously they don't have my password but can they still access my network without it? Or is it that i don't understand the definition of a "DHCP client" and if so could someone point me in the direction where i could find more info on it?

I remember in the previous versions of OS X, in system preferences>sharing it had an option "PC sharing" which is no longer available. Would this option be somewhere else in order for me to disable that type of functionality?

  • Follow-up question to thread 'Sort by "total" in Answers'

Seems I was a bit too quick in closing.
Sorry for opening two threads on this, but I need to get this solved as I'm on a tight deadline here...
The answer that pretty much solved my issue on sorting columns on sub-totals in Answers was:
if you want to sort on sub-totals, follow this:
i'm assuming that for that profitability column sub-total is sum of individual values for that segment..
create other column in criteria tab:
change it's fx to: sum(Profitability by Year, Sector)
then, keep first sort order asc/desc on this column
    hide this column
apply 2nd sort order asc/desc on normal profitability column..
hope it resolve your issue.... I just have one more quick question:
I can now sort according to sub-total, but how can I hide this new column from my table view? Clicking on the red 'x' button totally removes it as a filter.. The "hide" checkbox in the properties of the column simply grays the column out and shows it without any numbers.
    Thanks in advance
    - Magnus

go to column properties (first option) > Column Format tab
you find hide check box.. select and save.
grays out the values in the column, which is correct and the same what we want..
But, you should look at that in compound layout, not in edit properties of table...
in compound layout, appears like it's hidden
    or
achieve everything in pivot then exlude that particular column
