Follow up to "crickets in my new iMac"
The original thread has been archived, but I wanted to post a follow up in case anyone else has similar problems: I posted a question about a year ago regarding my brand new iMac g5 making a weird "squeek squeek" noise intermittently- I got a lot of patronizing replies that basically said it's normal and don't worry about it.
The noise was my hard drive dying. It crashed a few weeks after my first inquiry. Apple replaced it for free (warranty), but I was glad I had made a DVD backup.
Hi Theresaa, glad you have make a backup. Sorry to hear that, if I had seen your post much earlier I would have ask you to back up and replace your dying drive. I know 'cause the very same problem happened to me a while back and when I feedback to my vendor, he told me to immediately back up 'cause my internal drive was dying!
It will be a good practice from now on that you get an external same or bigger size drive and clone everything to it, as a backup and also make it bootable, in this case, when your drive fails again, you can either boot from this clone drive or when new drive is replaced, you just restore everything back. SuperDuper is by far the best and easiest clone/backup software I have ever use.
Cheers

I love my new imacg5. Best computer I ever had; however I have been hearing a "squeek squeek" occasionally (especially when running lots of apps. One evening it sounded like crickets (while I was burning a dvd). I tried apple chat support but Rajive wasn't quite getting the picture. I have searched this forum and found similar, but not quite identical issues. It only happens rarely.
Theresaa - I know what you're talking about. I got my G5 a few months ago and at first I thought it was my imagination, but there is a definite chirp there. I guess I've gotten used to it. It usually starts up if I'm using Logic Pro and turn the processors on to "Highest". If I leave the processors in the "auto" mode (in the System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options), then it's not as frequent.
(Now I have a problem with an annoying squeak when I open the CD/DVD tray). Always something...but not enough to ever want to buy a PC with Windows.
Thanks,
Jack -
I'm transferring my iTunes library from a PC to my new iMac via home sharing. I've followed all of the steps to "import" my library but the "import" button is greyed out. Any suggestions?
There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was. -
Following the instructions on the Apple website on how to transfer music to a new computer using your iPod, it basically says that you have to hook up your iPod to your old computer. Seeing as my old computer (a PC running Vista) died a horrible death and no longer works - including the hard drive being corrupted, I cannot do this. Is there a way to sync my iPod Nanop 3rd generation to my brand new iMac without losing all my music?

I just got a new iMac. was following the onscreen instructions to do migration assistance and I guess it connected to my old iMac via wi fi. It never instructed me to connect via firewire. Now it seems to have stopped. what can I do that won't completely mess it up? how Long will it take to do over wi fi?
Your new iMac does not have a Firewire port so you ned this adapter:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
to connect the two machines together and migrate simply follow the instructions in:

New iMac extremely slow following migration (Help with Etre Check diagnosis)
Hi gurus,
New iMac - scheduled for genius bar on Friday but trying to avoid the trip. Migrated everything over from 2009 macbook pro to 2011 macbook and now 2013 iMac. I imagine there is a lot of cruft from the repeated migrations and am close to just wiping and migrating from scratch. I don't know, however, how to get my old mail and other critical settings over.
Problem is clearly in the user account. I created a separate admin account and that runs relatively fine. Is the below user account salvageable? Should I delete all my old permissions? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks for the Etrecheck program,
Problem description:
Application hangs and system unresponsive in migrated user account

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. How do I install CS5 on my new iMac?
I have just bought a new iMac. My problem is that I want to install my photoshop CS5, which I own on disc. As there is no disc reader on the iMac, I tried downloading photoshop CC and entering my serial number - which wasn't accepted ( it's the only photoshop I could download, was hoping they would recognise my serial number and install CS5 for me). My question is: How can I download/install my CS5 without buying an external disc reader?
You can download photoshop cs5 from here.
Just follow the Note:Very Important Instructions or the download links won't work.

How can I run a copy of photoshop elements from a hard drive from a broken laptop on my new imac
The laptop had motherboard issues so have taken the hard drive out and am running it externally on a new iMac - if i try to run the program it says error code 6 and that i need to uninstall then reinstall the product but I bought it online so don't have a disc
Install a downloaded version... you should be able to find it among the following links:
PSE 10, 11 - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-10-11-downloads.html
PSE 7, 8, 9 - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-7-8-9-downloads.html
Check your Adobe account online for the serial number if you have not saved it anywhere locally. -
Set up new iMac user accounts & storage locations
I just made the switch from Windows PC to a new iMac since it is still in the box I thought I would take some time to think about how I want to set it up before opening it and starting to dump all my files onto the new machine. I'd like to have an efficient setup and get it right from the start!
My current (PC) set up is this:
I have one 500Gb internal drive. Using Windows 7 I have four user accounts: me, my wife, and one each for the kids with parental controls. I would like to duplicate this setup, and I understand OS X Lion can do this.
Now the messy part: under my account I have a bunch of docs (word, excel files, PDF's, etc, let's call this stuff "data"), a couple thousand songs, a bunch of pics and some movies. Email etc too. When I log into my account I have a my documents folder with my data files. I have an iTunes folder and in it a bunch of music. Some is from ripped cd's, some from iTunes store, some from amazon mp3 store. When I open iTunes I have a library with all of the music avail on my machine. Oh, I also have an iPad 2 and when I plug it in, it syncs with my library and apps and movies etc. I open Thunderbird and I get my email. So far so good.
When my wife logs in she has her "my documents" folder with her data. She opens thunderbird and gets her email, not mine. More mess though: she doesn't like half the music I like, and she doesn't want to see it. When she opens iTunes she gets a library with fewer songs available, and I'm moderately sure that her songs are *copies* of what's in my music folder. Well some are anyway, some point to the music in my folder (I was not very consistent in how I added music to her library). She has an iPad 1 that syncs to her library, with only a fraction of the apps that I have. She has her own pictures too (different from mine - basically she would copy pics from the camera to her "space" but I wouldn't know it, and wouldn't see them).
The kids accounts are relatively "clean" - just accounts with parental controls for web browsing (online kids games) etc. EXCEPT my daughter has an iPod shuffle (2Gb) and a small library of songs. I *think* this library points to my files but hey might be copies.
I *dont* want to end up with a ton of duplicate files on my new machine like I *know* I have on my windows machine. It just eats up too much space.
What I want to do is have one place for all of the pictures to go, and all of the music files to go, and every time there are new pics or music, it all goes there. But I want my wife to have a "smaller" music library than me (she just plain doesn't want the "clutter" of seeing my music and having to sort through it to check it/uncheck it to put it on her iPad - she's a clutter-free freak even with digital files). For photos I want to use one iPhoto library so that if she goes in there and tags some phots with some keyword or event or adds new pics, then I see those things when I open my iPhoto (I honestly don't even know how to use iPhoto to manage my pics, my iMac is till in the box). I want her to have her data under her login and my data under mine, etc. In short, there things I want shared between the two of us, and things I don't, without duplicate files eating up the space on my 500Gb internal hard drive.
Additionally I am considering a 500Gb external drive, and rather than using it for straight up storage, using it as a time machine backup of the whole system. I am looking at a FireWire800 drive for better performance.
I'd like to get this right the first time, but don't know enough about how os x works/sets up user accounts, and/or the best, most efficient way to set up the new iMac from the get go. I don't know if I should set up all four accounts first, then add my data/music/pics manually, or use the "migration assistant" (I have read a bit about using it but honestly don't know how it works, or if it will do what I want).
Perhaps I could just print out this email and pay for apple one-to-one service, but I thought I'd check here first! Sorry for such a long post - but I am hoping I'm not the only one who has wanted to make the switch and start off on the right path! And it's a lot easier to learn from other peoples experience than to figure it all out on my own!
PS: don't know if it matters much, but I also hav an iPhone that I sync with my iTunes, and I'm concerned about losing the configuration/apps/music/movies on both my iPad and my iPhone when I make the switch. Thoughts? Should I be concerned? How do I do it correctly? You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. Give them a call and they can help you set it up, however to be honest you are way over thinking this, those old PC habits die hard! My recommendation is, take it out of the box, read the manual carefully and turn the thing on following the on-screen instructions and start enjoying your new iMac.

Can RAM lock on a new iMac?
Hi all
Just a quickie. My mum has recently purchased a brand new iMac. Specs below:
21.5-inch: 2.7GHz
2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB
OS 10.7.3
My question is this:
My mum's not into downloading applications and such, so I have to step in and help out. The following might be a little vague but I'll try and be as clear as possible. I downloaded Google Notifier and World of Warcraft These programs were safely in the applications folder, but there appeared to be some files left on the desktop - files that I'd assumed could be trashed. I filed them in an empty file on the desktop until I could determine whether they were of any use. To cut a long story stort, at certian points a file/files were taken from applications or empty folder and dropped onto the desktop. Although my mum didn't seem to notice, I saw something I didn't like. It happened 2 or 3 times when files were taken from folders and dropped onto the desktop. As they dropped there seemed to be some distortion on the screen as a whole. If I had to describe the distortion I would say it was similar to the distortion you might get on a digital tv when the signal drops temporarily. The times that it did happen, it only flickered for a split second in part of the screen, and only when files were dropped. Maybe the system was being overworked? Maybe it was just a glitch? Maybe applications were still running and files were connected a system that was still running? At one point I bordered on taking the machine back for a replacement as if you're paying over a grand for a new computer I would have expected what I saw not to happen. But might be being over cautious as was simply concerned as my mum had paid a lot of money out.
I'm just wondering whether this seems strange? Whether anyone's experienced anything similar?
I've spoken to Applecare. They advised it 'may' be a hardware fault. Or that the RAM may have 'lcoked' when working or large files were taken from a folder and dropped onto the desktop. Can RAM lock? I've never heard of this before?
All now seems to be working fine. Sorry if I haven't been clear.
Many thanks to all who take the time to read through my post.
Kind regards -
Blubber BearI don't know about locking RAM, but strongly suggest that you contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. That might also apply to a new machine within it's first 90 days of use.

New iMac Not Recognizing iBook Running In Target Mode
Help!! I am helping a friend transfer all of her files and settings from her old iBook to a new iMac. I have repeatedly followed the instructions for using the Migration Assistant but the new iMac does not recognize the iBook after it is started in Target Mode. I have switched cables, zapped the pram, used the startup disk to repair disks and permissions. I can plug in an external firewire drive and it recognizes it immediately. I was called Apple Support, talked with first layer technician, was put on hold for next level of technician, put phone on speaker, person came back, said they couldn't hear me and hung up. Called back and low and behold it was quitting time. Very, Very frustrated.

Several posters have reported this. A solution that has worked for some is to place a powered firewire hub between the two machines (if you external FW disk is self powered and has two FW ports, that might work). -
New iMac wireless internet crashes repeatedly -- why?
Just set up the following wireless LAN: Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router as access point between a broadband cable modem, a new 27" iMac, a PowerBook G4, and a Canon wireless printer. Everything works great except for one thing: whenever I'm trying to use the internet on the new iMac, my internet connection crashes and I have to manually reset the modem and router. This happens when downloading a file even as small as 2 Mb. As you can imagine, this has become incredibly irritating, as none of us can get anything done on our new computer without me having to come over and flip a switch on the power strip to repeatedly reset the internet connection.
The Netgear router is about as old as the PowerBook (3+ years)--I see it's listed "EOL" (end-of-life) on the Netgear website, and I'm wondering if it may not be powerful enough to handle the new iMac? That's the only thing I can think of, since using the internet with the PowerBook causes no problems at all. I don't understand the subtleties of Airport v. Airport Extreme, 802.11b, g, n or whatever, to figure this out on my own.
Anyone had a similar problem and/or can confirm that the router is the culprit before I needlessly spend money on a new one? Some things you can try, if you haven't already:
-Make sure you don't have any cordless phone base stations operating near your router.
-Are any other electrical appliances (like microwave ovens or fluorescent bulbs) operating when your wireless connection fails?
-Power down the router and the iMac, then restart each.
-Change the channel your router uses to broadcast its signal. You should be able to do this from the web browser interface most routers support.
-Check Netgear's support website for firmware updates. Some routers can be commanded to check this from the web browser interface.
