To claify my problem, I can open a project in CS5 OK. The sequence and clips come up, and I can manipulate the, eg, resize a still image,
change in/out points on a clip, etc
When I click on ">" to play the program, it stops after a few seconds. Repeating the "start" comand getrs the same
result.

Mbp 10.4.8. Grey logo like tiny ghost page follows arrow, then freezes up! Tried reformat hw test. got nowhere! Any help?

Used mbp for 4 years with no problems at all, but recently had a screen freeze, and noticed a a small icon under the pointer. This was like a tiny greyed out page of type. Re-booted and got grey screen + wheel, but then blank blue screen. Had to soft boot but still got tiny page following pointer. Re-formatted entire system and OK for a few minutes but then page returned along with freeze-ups. Ran the hardware diagnostics from first disk but said no problems at all. Has anybody else come across anything like this? Grae

Okay, so this is what I've heard about RAM and problems after updating. I recall from somewhere in these forums that RAM can be totaly fine until you do things like install a program, update, or do something you havent don before. If memory serves me right, these things can lead to kernel panics and freezing because you would be accessing parts of your sticks that you never would have before, thus, never having it detected as bad. As for basic issues with it, RAM can go bad over time; this is when you need to contact the original company you got it from. And from my experience... Apple tech guys are probably really bored and end up reformatting everything I send in. I would just say leave the messed up one out of your computer. 1G is definitely enough to get by until you return to your apartment to argue with Apple phones for the next X number of straight hours :P. I mean, if you ARE doing heavy workloads involving a lot of ram, I'd still leave it out because Id rather have my work finished cleanly but slowly than at a high risk of crashing and needing to start over again.
PS. with the hardware test for RAM, I've also heard on these forums that it doesnt test the RAM that the computer is using to run. So maybe if you put both in and switched them around, it would allow it to access the bad segments

Network dies... followed by computer freeze...

Out of now where... and entirly random, my network, just on my linux box goes down... torrents stop dead in the tracks, and firefox cannot load any pages... If I try to bring up a terminal and I get the stopwatch icon followed by a full freeze.
Any ideas?

I had this issue, turned out linux keeps track of more addresses than my router could but a recent firmware update of the router fixed the problem (even stated it in the changelog as the main reason for the update.) So check that. Also check that you are running encrypted many reports of this fixing issues for some individuals. Lastly look at mu torrents faq or change your router firmware to linux.

Kernel panic, followed by boot freeze?

I have a Mid 2012 rMBP. I recently installed OS X 10.10.3 and started noticing I had some issues with certain applications. No big deal, I just had to restart two or three times per day. Last night I had several successive kernel panics on boot up, caused by launchd. After booting into recovering, Disk Utility said my disk was fine, so I went ahead and selected the Reinstall OS X option. The first time I did this, it got all the way to the end of the install, and then told me it wasn't successful due to an unknown error with BSD.pkg. So I tried the reinstall again, this time it succeeded. However, now, I can't login! After inputting my password, the Mac either black screens and restarts, or the loading bar appears underneath the password field, it gets maybe 1/8 of the way, and then it stops. The cursor appears, but even after 45 minutes, the bar did not move any further. Anything I can do to try to fix this before I take it to the Apple Store tomorrow?

MBP 15" 2.5Ghz display blink followed by system freeze

Lately my MBP sort of frozen with the blinking display, then it was unable to boot after I force shutdown the system, not even in the safe mode or the installation disk.
I have to run through the prcess of FSCK and resetting the PRAM before I can get it booting with the installation disk and run the Disk Utility to fix the permission.
I managed to get the system running again, and it went into the same problem I've mentioned above again and again...(I notice this only happen when I play the online flash game), eventhough I've fixed the permission everytime this problem occur.
Any tips on this issue? What has cause the disk error or the the permission error?

You seem to have all of your ducks in a row. As far as your query in regards to HDD, I have four 750GB 7200RPM Seagate HDDs (ST9750420AS), one in my MBP, others for Time Machine and other backups. All are spinning. I suppose that is some kind of endorsement.

IMac runs slow intermittently; occasional freezes require hard restart.

Recently, my iMac (27", mid-2010, OS X 10.9.3) has begun intermittently running very slow, with occasional freezes requiring hard restarts. I've been keeping activity monitor open and notice that multiple Google Chrome Helpers open (4-5 of them) with each using 98%+ of CPU capacity. Not sure if they relate to the slow response time. They are sometimes open in the activity monitor, but response times on the iMac are normal. Then, suddenly, the iMac slows to a crawl, with 15-45 second beach balls, sometimes followed by complete freeze and crash.
Any suggestions for diagnosis and trouble-shooting?

Freezing/crash of iMac under Snow Leopard when backup with Time Machine

Hi!
The backup on my external hard drive with Time Machine cannot be completed.
After few ten Go out of 360Go the backup stops suddenly and the computer freezes/crashes.
I have got an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 − 64 bit. The external hard drive is a LaCie 500Go.
Also, backups for another Apple computer can be done with this LaCie external drive. So, it is not the cause of the freezing/crash of the iMac.
I tried to solve this problem applying the following steps:
1- I started with the installation disk.
2- I repaired the internal iMac drive and the permissions with the Disk Utilities soft on the installation disk. All was OK.
3- The LaCie drive was erased, formatted again with one GUID partition (500Go) and the disk verified. All was OK.
4- I re-install the OS with the installation disk -> 10.6 Snow Leopard
5- Updates to 10.6.8, etc… security update 2012-004 and the 13th Java update to v1.6.
6- I deleted in the folder /Library/Preferences the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
7- I deleted the file com.apple.finder.plist in the administrator account Preferences folder.
8- The iMac was shutdowned as well as the external LaCie drive.
9- I restarted and changed the name of the external LaCie drive.
10- I choose the LaCie backup drive with Preferences System > Time Machine with right exclusions.
Unfortunately, the problem remained and the backup was again unsuccessful followed by another freezing/crash of the iMac.
So how to solve this problem?

Macbook air freezes with spinning wheel

So, my Macbook Air has suddenly started to freeze and leave me with the dreaded spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I get 10mins into a session, and sometimes the freezing will occur as soon as I log in. I have tried to log in in safe mode, but I also get the SWOD here as well! My details are as follows:

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

Video freezes at the end of clips.

Hi, I have encountered strange glitch. I have put many short clips into project, with straight cut, no transitions between. Some of clips doesn't follow seamlessly - video freezes for about 1sec at the very end of clip but I can hear audio from following clip and after that 1sec freeze video continues with audio. Therefore I "miss" that 1sec of video from the beginning of the clip. It happens only with some of clips and sometime I can sort it out with slight trimming. But mostly cannot.
What am I doing wrong there?

If you go into iMovie Preferences, make sure you select "Display Time Codes" as hh:mm:ss:frames.
By default, iMovie edits to the nearest 10th of a second, but by checking this parameter in preferences, you can edit to the nearest frame.

eg: its like the option used in excel for freezing the panes. like that, i need to freeze the column in JTable. so that, it wont be scrolled while scrolling the records, it should also be done in colmns of jtable for horizontal scroll n row for vertical scroll. is this can be done in JTable. Can u pls help me out in this...?

Missing photos/previews following system crash

Following a system freeze-up (happened while browsing with Safari) with Aperture 3.5.1 open and a forced shut-down, my Aperture library got messed up. Aperture suggested to rebuild the database and I did. After two or three rebuilds (all by Aperture's advice), there's no visible previews/photos in the library. The library listing is right, with all folders, projects and so on in place. But no visible photos. Only empty frames. When I click on a project or folder, my Qnap NAS drive (I have the complete Aperture library on it) sounds and behaves as if it searches and finds the photos, but Aperture shows nothing. It's as if the previews have gone missing. My library, when asked to show the content in the folder from finder, seems complete. Any ideas, anyone?

Can I just import this complete library to Aperture again, and everything is back to normal?
If you have a backup of your Aperture library, copy it to a directly connected external drive with the correct formatting (MacOS Extended (Journaled)) and open it in Aperture. (see: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library)
Importing is not necessary, since it is already an Aperture library.

MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 - Freeze

model: MacBookPro8,1
OS: OS X 10.7.5
Story:
i got a Macbook Pro 8,1 (13,3" Early 2011) which worked flawlessly - until yesterday.
Yesterday I decided to install the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626) - a bit unusual for me, since i normally wait a few weeks until others tried such an update. I did nothing in parallel on my mac, just the update. After the installation process i rebooted my system to finish the update process, the scm update installation run, everything seemed to went fine.
But shortly after the login process, my System froze and i had to hard shutdown my macbook. The first 3 or 4 attempts to only switch on my computer i got only a flashing indicator led, as usual, but not display output, no start sound, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried again, the system started to boot until the login window, but i had no time to input my credentials - the system froze again.
Since a got a bit computer experience, it's my day job, i first thought of a bad RAM. So i replaced it with two totally new ones (Corsair Mac Memory) and some older original Apple RAM, but nothing changed. I did the same with the harddisk, even i don't think it's related to a harddrive failure because of the symptoms, while trying to install a fresh OS - the system froze again.
After that i tried everything Apple proposed: SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times, but nothing helped in my case.
So the current state is as follows:
- The system freezes everytime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. But normally within 10 seconds. (I observed, the longer the computer stays off, the later the freeze appears). After a hard shutdown, i've to wait a few minutes to get the computer to display anything.
- I read the log files after installing the harddrive to another computer (it works fine there), but there seems nothing special (i could post it, if somebody need it). The system just stops responding.
I think, it MUST be related to the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6, because i had no problems at all before this firmware update, problems started after it.
Is anybody out there, who has another suggestion for me, or has the same symptoms?

I have MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) and similar problem (gray screen, system not start, noisy fan, etc.)
I applied last SMC firmware update 1.6
as a result I have unworking MacBook Pro.
When I have been looking table http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I am realised that link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626 on update for MacBookPro8,1 1.68f99 (SMC 1.6) and for MacBookPro7,1 1.62f7 (SMC 1.6) is same. And then I booted from Installation Disk1 with 10.6.4 and saw that my version of SMC is 1.68f99 instead 1.62f7.
In my opinion it's the main reason of our common problem. Apple released not correct SMC update and this update made briks from our MacBook Pro!!!

Weird clicking sound, iMac freezes or is dead slow, and turns itself off!

I've had my iMac for a good 3-4 years, during which it has been fitted with a new hard drive.
About a year ago, during watching DVDs, there was a weird click-clack sound for a good 10 seconds which was followed by the freeze. Sometimes it would go off, but sometimes the Mac would turn itself off like it had run out of juice. I thought it might've been a power issue.
Nowadays it almost every time presents this clicking sound, and freezing is inevitable. Sometimes there's no warning, the power just goes off. I have unplugged all devices that are using power ie. iPod, but the problem persists.
Could this be a mere power issue? What can the clicking sound be a symptom of?
I'm doing back-up in case the Mac completely shuts down, but I have hope for the machine yet!
I have few months warranty left, keen to sort this out pronto! All comments warmly welcome.

As I was making the clone with SuperDuper, the process was halted by an error, and I found half of my stuff copied on the external hard drive. It had enough space, but it prompted a dodgy file in 'Frameworks' in the Library which stopped the process. It all looked very benign, and I checked the troubleshooting and it suggested to try again after restarting.
What in fact had happened, was that ALL my music files had disappeared from my hard drive, none of my applications would work on my Mac, even Safari or iTunes, and I was left last night with the blue screen of death. These files were nowhere to be found, ANY of the hard drives.
Ready to chuck the piece.
Thanks for all your advice but this time, it made it worse. I'm getting the Mac a new hard drive as it's still under warranty. As it's the third time I've lost my files, there's hardly a scratch on me.. Taught me not to get attached to things too much.

Ae freezes with Mask/path

I have Ae CS6 and am running 11.0.2.11
Mac OSX 10.6.8
I am having an issue when I attempt to take a mask shape and use it as a path for a null object to follow.
The problem is when I try to take the mask path and apply the position of the of the null object to follow the system freezes it hangs with the shape color and I have to force quit Ae.
The shape I am taking is coming from illusrator to create the path and it makes the mask fine but when I try to copy it to the null object it freezes.
I do have an older version of illustrator CS4 for the shape but I do not believe that would be an issue.
Has anyone elso had this issue with this?

I'd clean up the path. It's probably causing the problems. It would be easy enough just to put a black solid above this layer, set the blend mode to screen, (or a white layer set to multiply) then draw a new simple path for your particles to follow. The blend mode lets you see the underlying layer without problems.
Once the path is drawn set a single key frame for the path, copy the path, then create a new light. Open up the light's position property and paste. Use the light as the emitter in Particular. Setting the first vertex at your starting point and leaving the path open will make the path more predictable.

Just noticed that you just wanted a null. There was a post concerning particular that I was reading earlier. Just replace the light with a null.. EZ as pie.

We are using the JavaHelp for the context-sensitive online help functionality in an application. A very strange error occurred:
The index search works fine for many search strings, but for many other search string the complete application freezes. One of these strings is "ab" and strings starting with "ab". This is very annoying, because many german words start with the letter combination "ab". There are other strings which do not work, f.e. strings starting with "orts" and those which do work sometimes, like "ort".
When I am writing, "the application freezes", I mean that you can only stop it via the Windows Task Manager. Since you are loosing all data which had not been safed until searching the help index, the behaviour is not tolerable for our application.
We are working with the de_DE.UTF-8 German locale.
Looking at the threads, we noticed, that one thread was running the isStringInString method of class javax.help.HelpUtilities endlessly.
I found a bug report (6195811 "jdshelp freeze at search with l10n string") which seems to be related to this problem and in which is mentioned the following:
"On de_DE.UTF-8 German locale, the following strings cause freeze.
- <compose> + 'a' + ''' + b + <compose> + 'b' + '''"
This indicates that other people, too, must have the problem.
Now my questions:
Do you have any ideas for a workaround?
Do you know, if it is possible to disable the index search? And if it is possible: How can it be done?
By the way, does anyone know, when JavaHelp 2.0_03 will be published? The quoted bug is mentioned to be fixed in 2.0_03.

Hi beap,
we are facing a similar problem. I filed bug report 6296005.
Do you use JRE 1.5? Our workaround is to use JRE 1.4.2, the bug does not occur with any JRE < 1.5.
When we detect that the user is running JRE 1.5, we just hide the Index tab. In our implementation of BasicHelpUI we do something like this:

            final String java_version = System.getProperty("java.version");
            if (java_version.startsWith("1.5")){
                return;
        super.addNavigator(nav);
}It's an ugly hack but better than a customer who loses important data because our application freezes.
I will provide the help set to Sun so that they can further investigate and hopefully fix this bug.
