Follow-up to Simple, Dumb Question

I couldn't see a reply button on the screen - looked everywhere. I'm on OS X 10.8.2.
Original question: have downloaded InDesign, can't open it, clicking on icon gets no result.

Inside the Application folder should be a folder for InDesign. Inside the InDesign folder is the application. Clicking on the application will launch the program.

  • SUPER SIMPLE DUMB Question about hard-wired desktop mac and wifi for iPhone

    Sorry if this has been already answered a million times. I have a desktop mac with a cable modem ethernet internet connection. I want to leave this hard-wired and setup a wifi network for a laptop or iPhone. What's the cheapest easiest way to do this?? I've never done anything wireless before.

    Could I just somehow split the feed from the the cable modem or ethernet cable and route part of it into an AirPort express??
    Unfortunately, no. This would create "confusion" for the modem as it is only expecting a single device to be connected to it. To be able to support both wired & wireless clients, you would need an Internet router with a built-in Ethernet switch, like the AirPort Extreme Base Station. If cost is an issue, you do NOT have to use an Apple router. There are a number of other vendors, like Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, & Netgear, to name a few, that offer similar models.

  • Simple/dumb question

    how do u find the make and model of your mac mini, I went to " About this Mac" but it only showed serial number and other things

    About this Mac, More Info ... button, Hardware.
    Then you see something like:
    Model Identifier: Macmini3,1
    but in truth, at least in this forum, generally folks identify the Minis via the CPU (eg, G4, CoreDuo, Core2Duo) and how many usb ports (2, 4, 5) they have.

  • Dumb Question, Seriously!

    Hi, I must warn you in advance that the following is a really dumb question, seriously!
    Now I didn't order the version of Final Cut Pro that I have now, but a family member did for me. A colleague was telling me that the Final Cut Pro HD version comes bundled with Soundtrack Pro, Motion, and etc. I do infact have all of those programs on my mac as we speak. My question is this colleague of mind correct?
    I was going to order the famed Lisa Brenneis guide to Final Cut, and there different versions of the book ranging from Final Cut Pro 3 and beyond.
    Any assistance is gladly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Final Cut Pro was originally sold as a separate software title. With the introduction of FCP 4, Apple bundled LiveType, SoundTrack and Compressor. Also available was the "Production Suite" which included FCP (with the same bundled apps), DVD-SP and Motion 1.
    Early last year Apple discontinued the availability of FCP and the other pro-apps as separate titles and bundled them all in a package called "Final Cut Studio" (includes FCP 5.0, DVD-SP 4, Compressor 2, LiveType, SoundTrack Pro and Motion 2).
    FWIW, the only version of FCP to be officially called "Final Cut Pro HD" was version 4.5 (a free update from FCP 4.0). All other versions are just plain ole "Final Cut Pro."

  • Simple query question

    hi all,
    I have a XMLType table with one column - I have presently one row, in my column xmlsitedata I have stored one large xml file.The schema definition is given below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    - <xs:schema elementFormDefault="qualified" attributeFormDefault="unqualified" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
    - <xs:element name="siteList">
    - <xs:complexType>
    - <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="site" type="siteType" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" />
    </xs:sequence>
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:element>
    - <xs:complexType name="siteType">
    - <xs:sequence>
    <xs:element name="nameEn" type="xs:string" />
    <xs:element name="nameFr" type="xs:string" />
    </xs:sequence>
    <xs:attribute name="code" type="xs:string" />
    </xs:complexType>
    </xs:schema>
    I have executed the query below:
    select x.XMLSITEDATA.extract('/siteList/site/nameEn/text()').getCLOBVal() "stName" from wsitelist x;
    and I get all english names of some 200 locations, however, there is 1 row selected and all names show up on one row. How do I split them into 200 or whatever rows?
    Thanks,

  • Dumb question about browser dectection

    I have a web application that looks awesome in IE but in Firefox it looks clunky and blocky. What I need to perform is a validation to see what browser the client is using. I have done this before on simple html pages javascript browser sniffing. Well it seems that I can't for the life of me to be able to get this working in Creator.
    My web project is a Sun Creator Web application. My OS is Windows
    Does anyone have any idea or references that you could supply to me?
    The following code works in an html environment but in a jsp I cant get the different style sheets to work.
    document.write("<link id="link1" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/WebDemoExtractor/resources/introductionFireFox.css" /> ");
    U jave tried many variations of the following
    document.write("<ui:link binding='#{introduction.link2}' id='link2' url='/resources/introductionFireFox.css'/>")
    I have tried performing many variations with the the above and I have had no success.
    Is it even possible to perform this function??
    Thank you

    Not a dumb question at all.
    I think you mean how is it possible to view YouTube videos in Safari on iPad, right?
    Basically, YouTube senses the browser you're using. Because Safari on iPad doesn't support Flash, YouTube delivers the movie in a format the iPad can play (like H.264, as a previous post mentioned). This happens with YouTube videos embedded on other web sites, too.
    I hope this helps.
    I was in an Apple Store a few days ago, and a teenage kid really wanted an iPad. His dad said, "but it doesn't play flash, so you won't get to see YouTube videos that you love." Kid said, something expletive deleted.
    The son then picked up the iPad, and he clicked on the YouTube icon. Walked out of the store with it. Sales guy and I laughed. Made my day.

        Hi droidboy52999,
    Your email won't have the same confirmation number as it was ordered over the phone. You will need the last name used for the order, the location code (this ends in 01) and an order number (five to six digit number). Please keep us posted if you need further assistance with this.

  • Simple (stupid) question...

    Hello everyone! I have what I hope is a really dumb question... I'm trying to use JDBC through an applet and keep getting the following SQLException after trying to use the DriverManager.getConnection call:
    SQLState: 08001
    Message : No suitable driver
    Error # : 0In order for an applet to use JDBC, does some sort of driver have to be installed on the client? or is it most likely some sort of logic error in my code? I copied the same logic from a .java application I have written that successfully connects to and queries the database, so I afraid that it may be something to do with the client-side of the fence, but in all reality, I'm clueless! Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim H.

    There are two ways of connecting to a database on the server side.
    1. Untrusted applets cannot touch the hard disk of a computer. Thus, your applet cannot use native or other local files (such as JDBC database drivers) on your hard drive. The first alternative solution is to create a digitally signed applet which may use locally installed JDBC drivers, able to connect directly to the database on the server side.
    2. Untrusted applets may only open a network connection to the server from which they were downloaded. Thus, you must place a database listener (either the database itself, or a middleware server) on the server node from which the applet was downloaded. The applet would open a socket connection to the middleware server, located on the same computer node as the webserver from which the applet was downloaded. The middleware server is used as a mediator, connecting to and extract data from the database.
    3.
    (there is always one...) is to avoid to have to open a socket connection on your webserver as this could be seen a security thread and then disabled by firewalls. Instead you could write a "JDBC-driver" servlet and therefore would use only http requests. XML would be the first choice for the data going back-and-forth between your applet and the servlet.

  • Simple performance question

    Simple performance question. the simplest way possible, assume
    I have a int[][][][][] matrix, and a boolean add. The array is several dimensions long.
    When add is true, I must add a constant value to each element in the array.
    When add is false, I must subtract a constant value to each element in the array.
    Assume this is very hot code, i.e. it is called very often. How expensive is the condition checking? I present the two scenarios.
    private void process(){
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
             if (add)
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  += constant;
             else
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  -= constant;
    private void process(){
      if (add)
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
             matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  += constant;
    else
    for (int i=0;i<dimension1;i++)
    for (int ii=0;ii<dimension1;ii++)
      for (int iii=0;iii<dimension1;iii++)
        for (int iiii=0;iiii<dimension1;iiii++)
           matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  -= constant;
    }Is the second scenario worth a significant performance boost? Without understanding how the compilers generates executable code, it seems that in the first case, n^d conditions are checked, whereas in the second, only 1. It is however, less elegant, but I am willing to do it for a significant improvement.

    erjoalgo wrote:
    I guess my real question is, will the compiler optimize the condition check out when it realizes the boolean value will not change through these iterations, and if it does not, is it worth doing that micro optimization?Almost certainly not; the main reason being that
    matrix[i][ii][iii][...]  +/-= constantis liable to take many times longer than the condition check, and you can't avoid it. That said, Mel's suggestion is probably the best.
    but I will follow amickr advice and not worry about it.Good idea. Saves you getting flamed with all the quotes about premature optimization.

  • Dumb question about user_sdo_geom_metadata DIMINFO entries

    I'm sure that this is a dumb question!
    I create a new entry in user_sdo_geom_metadata as follows...
    INSERT INTO USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA
    VALUES ( 'PR_A', 'GEOM',
    MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY(
    MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X',190000.0,640000.0, 0.05),
    MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y',120000.0,680000.0, 0.05)
    NULL );
    But when I select the DIMINFO from the table...
    SQL> select diminfo from user_sdo_geom_metadata a where table_name = 'PR_A';
    DIMINFO(SDO_DIMNAME, SDO_LB, SDO_UB, SDO_TOLERANCE)
    SDO_DIM_ARRAY(SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X', 190000, 640000, 0), SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y', 1200
    00, 680000, 0))
    The sdo_dim_element and sdo_tolerance
    elements show no decimal places.
    Is this because I have not set some
    display number format option in SQLPLUS
    or for some other reason?
    regards
    Simon

    Simon,
    If you are using an old sqlplus client
    (815) then you won't be able to see the decimal places in the diminfo object.
    But if you hace a newer (816/817) sqlplus
    client you should be able to see the decimal places.
    If you are not seeing them in these clients
    then there might be some format paramter set
    to show numbers without decimals.
    You can do a
    show numformat
    in sqlplus to see if there is any format set for that paramter.

  • Extremely dumb question

    Hi,
              This is really basics, but...
              Replicated JNDI is the most obvious answer to the following questions,
              but considering that bindings are removed on a failure of the host, it
              doesn't really work for failover.
              Let say I have a stateless bean that provides a description of the
              capabilities of a service implemented by the server application.
              Doesn't really matter. Importantly, it is not related to any
              particular session. A requirement states that the bean must not be
              created till the first request to functions it provides is issued. So,
              pre-instantiating it by the start-up classes is discouraged.
              Where should I keep the reference to the stub after the bean is
              created by the front-end servlet, so that it would survive failover
              and would be available to all the servers in a cluster? Servers are
              brought into the cluster dynamically over a period of time.
              A similar question. Let say a user object is an application-wide
              resource. Where do I keep it, so that it would survive a failover?
              Thanx

  • Okay, a dumb question, but need to know -

    do I need to buy protection software like Norton or Malware Bytes for my mac?  I thought Mac's don't get hacked.

    No.
    It's not a dumb question at all. Most people come to this site after they mess up their Mac. Don't install that junk, and you won't be coming here when you need to fix the problems it causes.
    There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
    You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
    Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
    Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
    OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
    A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
    Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
    Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
    Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
    "Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
    If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
    Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
    Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
    Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
    Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
    Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
    Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose:Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
    Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
    Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
    Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
    Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
    The same precaution applies to Adobe Flash Player. Newly discovered Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly.
    Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
    Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
    Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
    If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
    The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
    The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
    Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
    The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
    OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
    Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
    If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
    Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
    Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
    Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Where do I enable HTML view for Mozilla Firefox. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    No answer that I have found online has been any help to me!

    It's not a dumb question, but I have a follow-up: is the problem that Firefox is presenting pages with little or no stylization, looking mostly like text with some random images instead of having their usual layout?
    Does the problem affect secure sites (address starts with HTTPS instead of HTTP)?
    If so, there may be a problem with how Firefox is set up to work with secure sites. Because many popular websites combine content from multiple servers, if you made a security exception for a site, that may not get you all the elements of the page, such as style rules.
    More detail if it's relevant. If this is off track, could you describe the problem in more detail?

  • Two dumba$$ questions

    Sorry, I know these are two really stupid questions, but I know nothing at all. I've just bought a new iBook after ahving a really ancient Mac. Both my questions are to do with Garageband...so here goes...
    Question 1
    What other equipment do I need to be able to record real instruments (string quartet)?
    Question 2
    I was just having some fun the other night, making up some stuff and trying to familiarize myself with the whole Garageband thing (which I love already).
    As I was adding loops I had the sneaking suspicion that some where starting to go missing - why was there an 'Acoustic Noodling' numbers 2, 3, 4 etc but no number 1? Where were 'Asian Gamelan' 3 and 4?
    Chose not to save anything I'd done so far and after did a quick search in the Garageband loops search bit, but nothing came up. Went through the installation disk thinking it would put back anything that had gone missing. Still nothing. Did a spotlight search and a few of the items I thought had gone missing were in iTunes.
    Maybe they were never in the Garageband loops samples first place? Is this possible? Is there somewhere that lists what loops come with Garageband? I'm starting to doubt my own sanity, especially since I went through the installation disk...
    I now have the following samples on my desktop - ones which I thought had gone AWOL:
    Acoustic Noodling 1; Asian Gamelan 3 and 4;
    Middle Eastern Oud 3 and 4.
    I have tried to drag them into the Garageband loops section, but they seem to disappear into the iTunes...I have no idea what's going on...
    Apologies in advance for these dumb questions.

    For what you need to do your string quartet recording, read HangTime's FAQ to get started:
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html
    Contrary to what you might think, you probably don't want to record the four members of the quartet separately on their own tracks, each with a mic close to the instrument. String quartets need to play all the parts together at once, to get the best feel and performance.
    You'll probably want to put up a pair of mikes arranged in a stereo pattern, at some distance from the string quartet (a couple of meters at least), in a nice live-sounding room. Mike placement techniques are hard to describe in this kind of forum, but you can find textbooks on the subject with diagrams.
    You'll need a matched pair of better-than-average-quality condenser microphones, and an audio-to-computer interface with better-than-average preamps.
