Following mail message links to Safari don't return to message - erratic!

I have a problem that occurs ~ 80% of the time. I get an email message with several links to web pages. I click on a link, Safari opens, but when I go back to Mail (by hitting the Application button, then Mail) most of the time it takes a while to think, then just goes to the last mailbox In box I was in, without going back to (or even selecting) the message I just came from. I then have to find the message again, open it, and then find my place again.
About 20% of the time, it does just what I think it should: it goes right back to the message I was in, right at the place I left. This is a huge time saver and much more convenient.
I can't really figure out what causes it to do one or the other. A likely guess is that it uses extra memory for the web page, and dumps location info or some such. Still, the web pages are very similar in size and complexity, so I doubt that is the problem. I have tried to figure out if it does it more often with more web pages open, but that doesn't seem to be the problem (and they don't seem to be stored in memory anyway).
Anybody else have this problem? Any ideas on how I can get it to do what I want on a more regular basis?
Thanks for all thoughts on this.

Any thoughts from anyone? If it is any help, when it goes back to my same spot in the same message, it goes back quickly. When it takes a while to do anything, it ends up not in the message, but rather in the top of the folder (no matter where in the folder the message was).
Thanks -

  • Email links in Safari don't work

When I click on an email link in a website (using Safari 6.1.5), my computer links to TopSites instead of my Mail Account. How do I get the links to go to Mail?

    It could be mlaware ...
Download and run the adware removal tool here >   The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
Easy, safe, and only takes a minute or two.
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If no malware is found, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Following mailto link in Safari

Whenever I follow a mailto link in Safari on my iPad 3, I get a grey screen overlaying the mail template and I'm unable to proceed without force quitting Safari.
Any idea how to fix this, or is it a known bug?  (I am fairly sure this is not a site dependent issue.)

Clear Safari and then try it again.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Clearing the history is not absolutely necessary but clear cookies and data.

  • Mail program won't open when clicking link in safari

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

So I'm not Mary Frances.  I'm her husband who is force to deal with this opaque and obnoxious equipment (iPad).  With the iOS 7 update she could no longer follow web links by tapping them in an e-mail (it did work from a web page).  After an hour of web searching, experimenting and rejecting the offer of an answer from apple help for only $20, I found that, if in settings/safari, you turn off the "Do Not Track" button, the ability to follow links in an e-mail by a tapping is magically returned.
Flash! I just went back to the ipad and turned on the "Do Not Track" button -- just to test my discovery.  Predictably (by my cynical myself) you can still open a link in an e-mail, so I don't know what's happening/happen.  But I'm not surprised.

  • Want to E-mail Link using Safari

I'm an old Explorer user, and in Explorer there was an option to "Send This Page" or "This Link" , and it would then open up your e-mail program with the link or page already inputted in the message section. Does Safari have something similar. I have tried to find it, I have used the Help manual, but no avail. Any ideas would be appreciated.
    MIK

    Mik,
Copy the following line and paste it into Safari's address window. Then drag it from the address window to Safari's Bookmarks Bar. Give it an easy name like "Send" or "Mail".
    javascript:location.href='mailto:?SUBJECT='document.title+'&BODY='+document.title+'%5Cn%3C'+escape(location.href)'%3E'
Whenever you want to mail a link, click on your new bookmark while Safari is on that page.

  • After 10.9.4 Update: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash?

    Hello,
After 10.9.4 Update/MacBook Pro with Retina display: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash? I believe I must join those who are having trouble with mail after this latest update. Deleted messages just turn a light grey in the message panel and don't move to trash until after I quit and restart mail. I have also experienced the screen "Freezing" ... no spinning beach ball, just the pointer frozen. This has happened only when I use mail and requires a "hard" re-start to correct.  Is this a "feature" of the update, or is it a problem? Thanks!

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
Quit Mail and empty the Trash. If you still can't, log out or restart the computer.

  • How do I set Mail to launch clicked links in Safari, rather than Firefox?

I have both Safari and Firefox installed on my computer. Safari is the default browser, but when I click a link on an email that I have received, Mail opens it in Firefox. This happens even if I have Safari open and Firefox closed. In that case, Mail opens Firefox and then displays the location of the link. I can't find an option in Mail settings, to set the default browser for clicked links to Safari.

    Great news Matt, thanks.
Likely it was done when you installed Firefox, it asks if you want to make it the default browser.

When inserting pictures in a new mail message using the " photo browser" button I can view and select photos but the " choose "  button is gone. What have I done wrong?

    Hi Liz,
Sorry to hear you are having a similar problem.  Last night I went to the tool bar at the top of iphoto, clicked on "File",  then clicked "Browse Backups" in the drop down menu.    I have an external hard drive that is set up to Time Machine.   The Browse Backups  opened the iphoto pages in the Time Machine.  I selected a date one day ahead of the day I performed the now infamous update, and it showed my iphoto library as it had existed that day.   I then clicked  "Restore Library" at the bottom right corner of the Time Machine screen.   Roughly 2 hours later my iphoto was back to normal.   When I opened iphoto there was a message saying I need to upgrade my program to be compatible with the new version of iphoto(version 9.2.1).  I clicked "Upgrade" and within seconds it had done whatever upgrading it needed to do.
The only glitch in the restoration was that it restored the library as it appeared last week, so I no longer had photos I had imported this past weekend.   I simply went back to the Browse Backups in the drop down menu,  when Time Machine opened I selected the page showing my pictures from this weekend and again said to Restore Library.   Roughly 45 minutes later the library was restored including the most recent photos.
I am now a happy camper.
I don't know if any of this will be of help to you because your email says you are having trouble with photos imported after the upgrade was performed.   Have you had any pop up notices when you first open iphoto,  that tell you you need an upgrade to be compatible with the new iphoto?     If so have you clicked "upgrade"?
Good luck Liz,  if you have Time Machine running as a back up to your library, maybe you wil be able to get help there, by following my instructions above.   Otherwise,   good luck with your investigations.   I'd be interested in hearing how you make out.
    Karen
