FON & openzone on HomeHub

I logged into my router today to discover that FON had been enabled on my router. (It wasnt on day of install)
But i also didnt see any bt openzone hotspots/FON hotspots in my wifi list of available networks. So if FON is turned on, how do people connect to my network? My main wirless is WPA2/PSK encrypted, so nobody could connect to that.
Also what if someone connects to my FON/openzone and does something nefarious, am i responsible? Sure, BT says its tunnelled traffic, but I'm still the gateway, so if someone is on P2P My IP will be the one which shows up in logs.

Your network is safe the fon connection is not encrypted but does need to be logged into by the user who must have signed up to fon also that identifies them on that connection so no you are NOT responsible for any user on fon the connection also uses a separate wireless channel to your own network

  • Does BT Fon/Openzone work with an ipod touch gen 1...

    Hi,
I am a BT Infinity customer and have opted in to BT Fon. I cannot get my ipod touch gen 1 to work with a BT Fon or Openzone network. I can connect to my BT home hub as well as various friends' networks but for some reason I can't get the BT Fon/BT Openzone to work. It sees the network and in Settings-->Wi-Fi Networks I have deleted the initial 10.xx.xx.xx entry (leaving the "192.168.22.22, 192.168.22.23" with no leading space) and it says it has connected. When I go into Safari and try and enter any URL it says "connecting..." but I do not get the landing page (to enter my details) and it eventually times-out with a "Cannot open Page. Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding" message. This even happens when I try and use the BT Fon part of my home hub!
Any ideas why this isn't working? I have tried various BT Fon/Openzone points and none of them work. Any help would be most appreciated!
P.S. I cannot use the BTFON app as it is not compatible with the ipod touch gen 1 (I have the latest version of the ipod gen 1 software which is 3.1.3).

Well, I've tried various networks and various settings and I simply cannot get the ipod touch to work with BT Fon/Openzone.
I have to say I'm very disappointed with this - it was a toss-up for me to join either Virgin Media or BT Infinity and the only thing that swung it was the opportunity to use BT Fon/Openzone points when out and about. I think I've made the wrong choice as it is pretty useless to me now.
Also, the BT Fon website claims that in the area where I work there a lots of BT Fon/Openzone networks but I spent an entire lunchtime walking around with my ipod checking the available networks and only found two - both with fairly weak signals that occasionally disappear and reappear. Anyone else noticed this too?
I'm fairly sure it's not my ipod as it will happy connect to my homehub from the bottom of my garden which is around 30 metres away from the hub.

  • BT FON/Openzone Hotspot connects but will not go o...

    Hi,
Recently moved house and thought I'd been lucky to be right next to fon/openzone hot spot. However upon connecting I get the typical 10.* address allocated and 192.168.22.22 dns which are classic signs the home hub I'm trying to connect to needs to be reset. Problem I've got is I'm in a big flat complex and no clue who has the fon/openzone homehub.
Any one get any ideas? I've tried the official channels and I've been stone walled straightaway.
    Kind Regards,
    James

there is no way you can force whoever the owner of the hub is to reset just so you can access their BTFON.  I'm surprised that if it is a big flat complex that there are not more BTFON wifi signals than just this one

  • Bt Wifi/Fon/Openzone/Roaming clarification

    Hi All,
I just recently got Infinity 2 and HH3 and I want to clarify how the free Bt Wifi works that I get as part of my subscription.
Ther terminology and wording seems a bit different in various places so I wanted to check if someone here can give an official answer.
I undertsand there are 3 types of BT Wifi points:
    1) HomeHubs sharing as FON
    2) "proper" hotspots in some commercial properties (BTOpenzone)
    3) Roaming Wifi partners/companies. (UK ones and abroad?)
I am only interested in using 2) & 3)  Can I turn off the Fon on my HH and achieve that without paying any more money?
Also my HH seems to be transmitting 2 seperate SSIDs "BTWifi" and "BTWifi-with-Fon".  What sort of people can connect to these and why is there 2?
Finally, assuming I can still keep wifi and turn off FON, what is the easiest way to connect to roaming hotspots (probably in EU) form other companies?  Using the BT app for your smart phone?  I guess if I connect to an BT prefixed SSID once and save details that is fine for all other UK based spots with same SSID, but I guess foreign partners will have different SSIDs?

There is an allowable cheat if you want to use the free service but don't want others using your broadband via BT-Fon.  You can replace the HomeHub with a different router that does not support BT-Fon.  Always strikes me as slightly anti-social, but ...
I doubt anyone has ever used my Broadband via Fon other than me in a test.  I've certainly never seen any impact.  I have heard that the download a BT-Fon user can use is quite limited, but that in theory they can use lots of upload.
using another router to receive your broadband is not a cheat just in many cases including my own a better way to improve my connection and maintain a stable line.  I get the benefit of BTWIFI when out and about but I do not benfit like many that use there own BTWIFI connection if they are about to exceed their usage limit
Both are acceptable and are not a cheat
you cannot connect to openzone when outside the UK with your free BTFON

  • HP PAVILION G6 CONNECTS TO BT FON/OPENZONE BUT NOT...

I have a HP Pavilion G6 Laptop that I have had since 25/12/11. It seems to be having a problem though...
I cannot seem to connect to my BT Homehub 2.0. I am able to connect to other wireless devices and even the BT FON and openzone FROM THE SAME ROUTER! I find this very annoying, as BT FON is irritating with the auto log out and the unreliability of it all.
I have had this problem before, so I phoned up knowhow, and I had to reset my laptop to factory settings. It is now happening again and I have important files that would be a pain to lose! But again, it only refuses connection on this home hub... It is also happy to connect the hub through ethernet...
ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES IS THAT I HAVE OTHER DEVICES (iMAC iPHONES, XBOX 360s ETC.) THAT ALL CONNECT TO IT NO PROBLEM, BUT THIS LAPTOP DOESN'T WANT TO!
This is what I have tried so far:
    1) Contacting BT and having a lovely 1.5 hour remote PC session, getting nowhere...
    2) Changing settings on the router (Change to channel 11, 1 and changing b/g/n to b/g).
    3) Forgetting the wireless drivers on the laptop and re-installing them...
    4) Reset the Hub to factory settings
    5) Changed WPA2 to WPA and WEP.
ALL OF THIS TO NO HOPE!
    PLEASE HELP!

it is not the wireless drivers you are having a problem with you need to remove all shown wireless networks from the laptop then let windows find the networks again when you see your hubs ssid then click on it then enter the encryption code just ensure you delete any other connections

  • Multiple users on fon openzone

Hi can all my family connect to FON or openzone when out and about at the same time?
They all use it when at home! if so do they need there own usernames and password or do we all use the same one?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You would all have to use the same one as the primary e-mail address and password is the only one accepted. Not sure about concurrent logins. If it works at home, then it would probably work when away from home.

  • Accessing FON / Openzone

    Hi,
I have just subscribed to the BBA package and have bought the HTC Hero phone (which I am delighted with). Can someone please tell me how I access BT FON or Openzone when in one of their hotspots? I've seen reference to landing pages, but do I need to bookmark these pages or should they be automatically presented when in a hotspot?

With your wi-fi switched on, and in range of an Openzone hotspot, you may have to connect manually the first time (look at the list of available netowrks, then select Openzone and hit connect... not sure of specifics there as I'm a WinMo user) after you've connected once, it sould automatically connect whenever you're in range of an openzone hotspot.
Now, the landing page... you don't need to bookmark this as you browser will automaticaly be directed to it when you open up the browser.  You can then put in your login details and away you go.  There are 3rd party apps what can allow you to automate this... well, there is for WinMo, and I'm sure there is one for Android, perhaps one of the Hero users will chip in with ideas.

  • Fon & Openzone Difference

I want am about to disable my ‘Fon’ service.
Does that mean I will not be able to use my free Openzone minutes when out and about at airports, hotel’s etc ? Because I have opted out of fon ! Or be able to log onto Openzone with my account. Details on BT’s site are ambiguous.
Also, what are the advantage of ‘Fon’ I can’t see any for me as an individual subscriber to BT broadband and of the 15-20 other neighbours BT networks I can see around me none of them have ‘Fon’ switched on.....maybe they are all using my ‘Fon’ !
I heard that I will have to reset my HH2 (soon to change to HH3) to clear out 'Fon' ?

Those are provided by another WiFi company, normally "The Cloud". You get free limited access with a voucher code, but you normally have to register with them first.
I've used BT Wifi at Starbucks and John Lewis with my BTBB details, but Joe Public can also join in through a registration process.  I'm also registered with The Cloud, and yes they do provide free hotspots (eg Wetherspoons, Little Chef, railway stations) but not at JL and Starby's.

  • Endemic FON/Openzone Issues: Advertising Standards...

I've posted issues with FOn/BTO a couple of times, and no-one has been able to help with a solution.
All that I get is 'Me Too' replies.
A trawl through the posts indicates that the only problems consistently 'Solved' are the ones to do with unsubscribing from FON.
This says to me that this offering from BT is not fit for purpose.
One of the reasons I switched to BT rather than another ISP was the concept of access out and about.
I am seriously thinking of complaining to the Advertising Standards Authority. What do others think?

I have no problem connecting to BTFON/OPENZONE when out and about with HTC desire.  just set phone app with username and password maining sure to use primary email and also btinternet.com address and not btopenworld

  • Can apple TV link up to BT WIFI/FON/Openzone?

Wondered if anyone can clear up this wee query.
When using my mac and am connected to BT WIFI-FON I am able to open Safari, be taken to the bt homepage and can sign into my BT account from there.
When using apple TV, it can pick up the BT signal and i can connect to it but I can find no way of browsing the homepage to login to my BT account or have any other option.
So the apple TV ends up being connected to BT only to the extent of  username/password level.
    Any thoughts?
    Any help apprecitated,
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately if you need to use a web page to log on to the Wi-Fi network then you will be unable to use the Apple TV. The Apple TV does not have a web browser.

  • Bt openzone/FON connection issue

Ok so I often use this specific btopenzone wifi hotspot, used it for a couple hours every now and again for ages. Hit a problem now though my laptoop no longer connects to it. it sees it i click connect but it just keeps coming up no internet connection. Help/ This is the only wifi thing that it dont connect to.

It could be down to the hub2 (if this is being used) as there is a known issue whereby it caches ALL passing wireless devices which then jams the hub and stops the connection to Fon/Openzone - a reset of the hub is the only known cure, though BT are rolling out an update to sort this out.
The other thing is that occasionally and I don't know why, we lose the ability to connect to random hotspots. Without any changes, the ability returns after a few days. Keep trying the same hotspot or as I said earlier, try another one to see if you also can't connect to this one. What about your own hub's Fon/Openzone hotspot, can you connect to this?

  • How to connect a PS3 to BT Openzone or Bt FON

I thought I would post this information as it has taken me all morning, a lot of phone calls and reading on google to sort this out!!
Problem I had:  I want to take my PS3 to my parents house when visiting and they dont have any access to the internet.  I am a total broadband customer and have access to BT FON & Openzone.
I called BT directly and they said they didnt support it so I nearly gave up however I have now found out exactly how to connect!!
Go to Network settings on PS3
Go to  - Internet connection settings
    Choose - Custom
    Choose - Wireless
    Choose - Scan
Pick whichever has highest signal strength - either BT FON or BT Openzone
SSID should come up with BtOpenzone (leave it as it is!)
    WLAN settings - choose none
    IP address - auto
DHCP host - do not set
    DNS - Automatic
    MTU - automatic
Proxy server - do not use
    UPNP - enable
    Press x to save settings
At this point it will test connection and show the IP address has been found but the internet connection failed, this is fine. Come out of settings and go to your internet browser on PS3
Once you launch the browser you get the BT openzone log in page, enter your details if you are a customer or buy the package / whichever is your preference.
Once you have logged in you can then close the browser and launch an online game!
I played Black Ops on BT Openzone at signal strength 100%, it was perfect and I had no problems at all!
    I hope this helps!!!

Hi, BTOPENZONE is my normal wireless network. I only have openzone and pay monthly for it!
Has anyone found a solution to the problem mentioned above with regards to the PS3 not obtaining an IP adrress from the OPENZONE access point? I alled th openzone helpline last night and am no further on today!
    Please can someone help me!!

  • BT Fon and BT openzone

I live in ontario tower and i was using btopen zone and bt fon thing( where you have to buy vouchers) for about 5 months and everything worked fine untill Monday. Now i can connect to any hotspots. It sais limited connectivity. Sometimes it sais "cant connect to the network". I tried every possible solution posted in previous topics...
    Help anyone?

It could well be that the FON hot spot you were using is no longer there, is relies on BT customers who have opted into FON having their homehub switched on, there could be a number of reasons.
    1) BT customer migrated to another ISP.
    2) BT Customer moved on.
    3) The FON part of the HH has gone faulty.

  • BT Fon / BT Openzone connection issues

Hi, I have BT broadband and with that I believe I get access to the BT hotspots. I've registered my details on the BT FON website to make sure and it confirms. However if I'm out and about and my phone pics up an openzone hotspot it connects to it but doesn't log in. I open the BT FON app and it gets to the stage where it says 'checking login status...' it stays on this page and doesn't log in. I've checked and my details are correct so why can I not log in to any of these hotspots. I may get 1, once in a blue moon but in general they do not connect. Any ideas as to why? What makes it more annoying is that I end up having to turn my wifi off so I don't keep connecting to hotspots that don't work and then turn it on again when I get home.

There are a number of posts on this forum relating to this problem, you may like to check these first for a possible solution.
