Font application interactive with Indesign

Does anyone know of a font application that works within Indesign CS3 on Snow Leopard.
YouControlfonts was a super duper application, but went south when Snow began falling.
I dont necessarily want to control or manage fonts like suitcase, just be able to group fonts together
and select them from group menu. Youcontrolfonts had a pulldown menu from the upper right corner
that allowed selection of font and the ability to group them.

there is a third party program called "You Control Fonts". It lets you place an icon in the top right corner, that when
clicked on brings up all your fonts as you have them arranged in Font Book. In collection sets, Bold sets,
any kind of set you make in Font Book,it reflects what is in the menu. It shows all your fonts, not just a select few you
have activated. It is the most time saving software I have every used. It interacts with ID in the fact that
you can highlight a font within the application and change it. It also lists most recently used. A SUPER TIME SAVER.
Unfortunately they discontinued support with "snow leopard" and now I am stuck with having to scroll through
all my fonts within ID to find the one I need or recently used, because ID doesnt have enough sense to know
what people need. Apple really screws their 3rd party supporter.
But thats what I am looking for.

Thank you for your reply. Unfirtunally that is not the solution. I have looked very closely but I don't have a bent arrow (I work on an iMac Indesign CC 2014).
And I don't want to filter them out, I want to delete those fonts Adobe gave me because I don't use them.

One web application - interact with many application

I need to create web application that will be interact with different applications by different protocols. On the input of this application will be different xml files (commands).The input must be implements as stream input (something like IBM WebSphere Business Integration Connect)
This web application must be consist from differents modules. Every module do the concrete task. E.g. with file1.xml - web application connect with MS Outlook. With file2.xml - web application connect with some web service and so on.
What kind of java web technology I can use to create this web application?

You can use web service to accept input XML for your application and remaining technology depends upon the nature of target system and your work involved. For example, to consume target system web service you can think of using JAX-WS.

How it is possible could anyone tell me.>About the only way you will be able to get interaction between a JTree and JavaScript is to put the JTree in a JApplet and put that applet in a web page that also references the scripts.
As far as Java/JS interaction go, look to [Real's HowTo|http://www.rgagnon.com/howto.html] (<- link) and the categories 'Java|JavaScript Interaction' & 'JavaScript|Interaction with Java'.
Testing will be a hassle, since the AppletViewer does not support Java/JS interaction and browsers cache the classes. Not that applet development is not a PITA to start with.
And a few points before closing:
- All sentences should start with a single upper case letter. This helps the reader to quickly scan text, looking for ways they can help. You would not want to make it harder for people who are trying to help, would you?
- The word 'I' should be always upper case, always.
- ..and it is JTree, not Jtree. Please be very careful with class names so we can all be sure you refer to J2SE classes, and not some 3rd part class about which we know nothing and do not support.

Interacting with InDesign Server without SOAP

The documentation in IDS SDK tells that one can interact using Javascript with IDS without using SOAP.
How can one interact using Javascript and without SOAP?
I know that with Extendscript one can write scripts and execute it directly.
But with a simple jsx file only how do I interact with server?

On Windows you can start the InDesignServer via the console. Then start the Extendscript Toolkit and choose "InDesignServer".

Font printing issue with InDesign CS4

Hello all,
I am at my wits end with a small but particular problem. I have an InDesign publication that is using a "Hands" font. For some reason, InDesign will not print a particular text box with just one "hand" character. However, it will print the same hand character in another text box. He're the other weird part. When I export the document to a PDF, the missing hand prints just fine! InDesign just doesn't want to print this particular box and font. Has anybody ran into this problem before?

Alec is right the easies way to handle this is to create Outlines which effectively converts the type to a vector shape.
To be on the safe side I always drag a duplicate of my type outside the print area directly to the left using alt + shift key, that way i still have live type that I can edit if I have to go back. It also keeps the font embeded in the document when I package it so it can be identified by the pritner if needed for some reason.Then I export the PDF and run a Acrobat PRO preflight just to be safe and correct anything in the profile.

i have java swing tree view(program).if i execute my program it will all indesign script folder files in tree view. what is my problem is if i click the script

This is not an InDesign issue but a Java issue. Search, or ask in a Java forum for best practice to deal with the mentioned platform specific mechanisms:
- inter process communication (AppleEvent or TLB/OLE )
- command line / shell script invokation
- a way to launch an JSX script - the equivalent mechanism to File.execute() in Extendscript.

Note the 1999 copyright, this is pre-OSX. Also located in a "legacy documents" area. Apple has the bad habit to deprecate/abandon most of their technology every other year, so I would not be surprised if it does not work any more and you'd have to write you own JNI, JDirect or JNIDirect glue ( I don't even know the current buzzword). Ah, further digging unveiled that they even dropped the successor which was named "CocoaJava".

J2Me and mobile application interact with PHP

Our company intend to develop a mobile application to enable customer to login to our url by using mobile phone which enable to update their contact details and check their accounts status. As our Web-server does not equipped with any Java Server, we will use a php program/script to listen to any incoming string from the client's connection.
As we are new to java /J2ME programming; Is there any sample code that we can refer for this project.

I don't know what you mean by "page content like true or false". To capture the content you use HttpURLConnection and read the content of the returned InputStream. As far as what you do with this content from there I can't say. I don't know if the server is sending you some HTML which has the words true or false somewhere in it, or XML with some sort of response code, or just plain text with true or false, or something else entirely.

Can Director Interact With Other Applications?

I am a CBT/E-Learning Developer looking for a way to author
Guided Help. I am thinking of how to develop interactive tutorials
that, instead of using screenshots of an application, interact with
the application itself.
For instance, let's imagine that a person is working in MS
Word and doesn't know how to save a file. He can click the icon for
the "Saving A File" lesson, and a caption displays on top of MS
Word that reads something like "Click FILE", along with some type
of indicator of the FILE button, such as an outline, highlight,
arrow, etc. The user clicks FILE, the File Menu drops down in MS
Word, and the next step of instructions is displayed. In this way,
the usre is guided through the steps of saving a file as he
actually performs the task in the software.
Can Director create this type of thing?

Thanks for replying. I used MS Word as just an example; the
type of software I'm wanting to use this for is police records
management software. I've been doing the interactive simulation
tutorials for them since 1999, using multimedia authoring tools
Demoshield and Opus Pro, and demo authoring tools RoboDemo and Demo
Builder. However, I wanted to get away from interactive tutorials
for 3 reasons:
(1) My client's software is frequently updated, and keeping
up with taking new screenshots is a hassle.
(2) I'm of the opinion that "at the moment of need", process
embedded "guided help" in the actual application is a much more
useful form of training than working through a simulation.
(3) It will greatly help my client's support staff and
training staff
I've been researching process embedded e-learning and guided
help for almost a year now. I've looked at everything from
multimedia authoring to macro software. I even found two programs
that do exactly what I want, but they are very very expensive, much
more expensive than Director.
Thanks for the tip on Hook Xtra; I'll check that out. Last
night I found an xtra called MasterApp, which may also do what I
need. I appreciate the concern about the difficulty of programming,
and I'm not a programmer (except HTML, and we all know how easy
that is). But I'm in this for the long haul, and would be using it
for potential new clients, not just my current client. I love
learning new software, and I have a membership to the IEEE Computer
Society, which gives me over 1300 online e-learning courses I can
take, including Director.

App-V 5 SP2 (RDS) application integration with multiple office versions - general question

So I have been testing Office 2013 with app-V 5 SP2 and the package size is a hefty 1+GB with Visio and Project thrown in and I am not convinced by the speed and efficiency of delivering office 2013 this way (shared content mode) so I am thinking of
pre-installing Office 2013 on my XenApp servers instead.
However, we have some applications that integrate with office 2007 as they are not yet certified with Office 2013. Am I right in thinking that if I package Office 2007 and add it to a connection group with the other application, then that app will use Office
2007 regardless of Office 2013 being installed on the local OS?

This depends on how it technically integrates with Office 2007. Without knowing, or testing, how that is done it is not possible to state which version will be used.

Interacting with Web pages

We have developed a J2EE application (jsp, struts, ejbs, etc.) and now have a requirement to interact with hardware at the client's site. The application needs to interact with printers, check readers and DL readers. Can a JWS application interact with the web pages?
For example, when a check is scanned, can the information be displayed on the web page? Additionally, we need to be able to print on both sides of the check. If I tell the application to print, can it respond back to the web application when it is done so the check can be flipped over and printed on the other side?

Java WebStart is "just" a deployment mechanism. An application deployed through JWS can do anything a regular Java application can do (provided it has the appriopriate permissions). This includes talking to whatever kind of server you can think of.
If staying within the sandbox is an issue for your app, you should take a look at the JNLP API, which allows you to do some "safe" things (like printing) on the user's system through interaction with the user. The advantage of staying within the sandbox is not having to sign your app and not having to ask the user for elevated permissions.

Anyone know how InDesign (or other CS4 software can interact with a Mainframe computer?

We print a lot of form letters, tax forms etc off of our main frame. Sometimes in large quantities.
Currently we are using a prgram called Elixir Design Pro tools to get the jobs done via the maineframe.
Is there any way that we can somehow incorporate InDesign to get forms printed without having to hassle around with this program? (Think giant mial merge off data stings on a main frame.
In the book, the background information on the program states:
The print process begins with the submission of a JCL (Job Control Language) statement. This JCL statement includes the instructions to start the job, along with the primary resources the job needs. These resources might typically include the data source, the PageDef and the Form Def.
These pieces are used by the PSF (Print Service FAcility,) a printer driver that resides in the host. PSF finds and retrieves all necesary resources, then has a two-way conversation with the printer using IPDS (Omtellegent Print Data Stream). IPDS is the language used for PSF and the printer to communicate with each other.
In addition to the Elixer fomrats, Visual PPFA allows the use of various overlay, fonts and images formats for your document desing.
Extensions on these include:
DOCUMENTS:obj; .src; .pfa; .dbf; efd; epd;
OVERLAYS: ove; ovt; 01; ogl; efr; elx;
FONTS: Several AFP and Adobe Type Manager Fonts, True type fonts

Where does the need for your mainframe come in to play then? If your goal is the use InDesign and not use the Elixir solution that you've already got and you want variable data printing you're going to look into something such as an XMPie or similar sort of VDP package. As is with your solution (of if you are using the lighter version of Elixir) you can put InDesign in and assign whatever dynamic goodness you want and spit out what you need.
If you've already got an expensive and supported solution that works on your mainframe and in your system I just don't see the sense in finding another expensive solution. You could maybe get it done with InDesign server or via a VDP solution, but why? What do you gain with it? Elegance maybe?
It sounds like something that is $10,000–50,000 deep as is with the combination of hardware and software that you have. Why would you want to dump another $20,000 minimum to get another solution that doesn't bring anything to the table?
InDesign server is for lightweight servers, not the big iron and will only run on Windows or Mac OS X, not on AIX or any of the big blade solutions as far as I know.

Using UI Automation Framework to interact with Flex applications

Hi all,
I created a small flash app using Flex builder 4.
I am writing a tool to interact with flash applications using UI Automation Framework which is similar to UI Spy. I've read in so many forums that accessibility can be done using UI Automation or MSAA.
Using the tool, I am able to get all the fields that are present in the application. (button, text, edit fields etc). Now, I want to use InvokePattern on buttons from my tool so that, if I click "Invoke" in my tool, the associated button will be clicked in the flash app. Here, I find no issues to do anything.
But, if there is a textinput field on the flash application and I use ValuePattern of UI Automation to set some value in the field using SetValue(), then I am getting
"System.InvalidOperationException"
even when I tried simple SetFocus() on to that field, I am getting the same exception Looks like, I cannot interact with flash text fields in the same way I do with other window's fields.
I used UISpy and other tools to see if they are doing any better with setting values on a text field. But, they too failed with same exception.
Can someone tell me why this is failing? Does flex/flash support UI Automation to this extent? Are there any examples or links that can help me here?

I downloaded flex sdk to see if there is anything that will help me. But, In flex sdk, I cannot find anything that would ease my path. I want to stick to developing in C# to talk to Flash applications. What is the best way to proceed? Are there any sdks that I can download and use for C# development to interact with the flex controls? What is the way to go? I seem not to find any good hits in the web as well

Hi, Thanks for your post. We want to convert to reflow able text, which can include illustrations (For Example - Children's Books).
We tried FM Abbhaya Font as it is easy to read and using a traditional Sinhala keyboard input method.
For Some reason we cannot get this input to be recognized by Adobe Indesign, to convert to an Epub format.
We tried the open font on Windows, but it means selecting each character from a table. As a small publisher it is not practical.
In fact the ideal path for us will be to convert our printed books to Epubs using OCR.
Any thoughts on that? Thanks for your time.
