Font Availability/Possible Font Conflict Problem

I have InDesign CS3 on a Windows XP SP3 machine with the following problem: I have a document I am reprinting for one of my clients and it uses Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold font. It seems that this font comes into conflict, probably due to its name, with Helvetica Neue Bold. If I delete the latter from the Windows\Fonts folder, then in all other Windows programs, the Condensed Bold font shows up. However, *it does not* show up in InDesign CS3. Furthermore, the latter thinks it still has access to the Bold font even after it has been removed from the Windows\Fonts folder. I assume this may be due to InDesign CS3 accessing fonts from elsewhere, but there is nothing in the "Fonts" folder for the main InDesign program folder. I would be very happy is someone can tell me what exactly is causing this font conflict problem, and how I can work around it.  But mainly, I need to know where InDesign informs the user about where it looks for fonts (I can't find anything like the specification in Distiller that restricts where it looks for Windows fonts). Any help would be *most* appreciated, as I need to get this out in the next two days and must leave town early Wednesday.

Fonts for Indesign can be stored in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\Fonts and they will only be accessible by Indesign.  I've had problems with different versions of Helvetica too, but only when they were from slightly different families, or a mixture of types.  Now I've got the whole set it works fine, you may have to experiment with your mix of fonts.  Bear in mind too that fonts display differently in the Indesign font list than they do in Word for example.

  • Problems With User Account? Try Resolving Font Conflicts!

After installing SL as an upgrade, one of my user accounts could not install software, switch to the other account, or do anything where the system would ask for the account password.
I tried resolving this by doing several things like remove all other language keyboards, deleting all files in the user/library/preferences folder, removing the user/lib/pref/byhost files, and the standard repair permisssions, etc.
I then remembered a message which said something about font conflict when first logging into that user account after the SL upgrade.
So, I went into Font Book and noticed that most of the fonts in the user category had the yellow triangle indicating duplicate copies of those fonts.
I resolved it by deleting all fonts in the user/library/font file. Those fonts were available in the computer anyway so I hope I'm not missing anything. Even still, a missing font is better than the alternative of not being able to install software and make other admin changes from the account.
    I hope this helps.

I have a similar issue with both my user accounts.
Spent about 3 hours with Apple customer support and still have the issue with installing updates and everything requiering authentication.
I noticed no conflict message as you did though...

  • Mail/Web possible font conflict?

Having trouble with getting Mail to look right. There are large spaces between the lines in the top portion containing From, Subject, Date, To, etc. On some websites this space also occurs or the type lays on top of each other. In iTunes the lists are spread apart or when viewing songs the songs won't show up until you run the mouse over them.
    Running Lion  10.7.3
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    24" Monitor

This may happen if you install and/or delete fonts or perhaps a font conflict.
Check fonts for display in both Mail.app and Safari, this is in preferences.
Also open Font Book and see whether you have duplicated fonts, this may happen if you install MS Office, and choose to also install fonts, some MS fonts are installed by Mac OS installer, and some of those installed by Office may be in fact older than those in Mac OS installer. Duplicated fonts are marked by a yellow point. If so, deactivate or even remove them.
Sometimes it is useful to clean font cache, especially after deleting/installing fonts. You may use a free app like Onyx, download the version for Lion, not another.

  • Lion OS and possible font conflicts

I wish to upgrade to the new Lion OS, but would like to know if the new OS Lion has the same font conflicts that Snow Leopard had with Helvetica and ITC Garamond Type 1 fonts?
    Thanks

It isn't released yet, so no one knows.  Also many font conflicts in 10.6 are resolved with the font update for 10.6.7:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1377
Others, specific to non-updated applications may not be fixed.  Perhaps it might be best if you asked in your specific application forum if the conflicts people have had are fixed in 10.6.7 first.  Or wait until 10.7's release and find out what the case may be.  Some point next month it should be released.  And yes, according to the specs, it looks like you'll need to purchase 10.6, and apply either the 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 combo followed by the font update, and then determine if you are ready for 10.7.  But that may change once it is released in July.
If you desire a direct upgrade path, please post to http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • Font Book Problem - Cannot see validated fonts in QuarkXpress

We are trying to view the fonts that we have loaded into the font book from QuarkXpress. We can see the fonts in Adobe Design Premium apps (Photoshop, Illistrator, etc.) but not in Quark 7.3.1. The fonts validate fine in the book. We have tried removing Quark and reinstalling it. We have tried booting into safe mode to clear out the font cache. We have done a permissions repair, verified permissions manually for user accounts on the new font folder that is created, and removed and readded the fonts under the user and the computer sections of the font book. The fonts are ITC Kabel fonts. They work fine on another Mac that we are running Leopard on as well, but they are not visible through QuarkXpress from a different user account on this same Mac with the problem. The only thing that I can think of is a system reload using the restore settings option to keep her settings? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Since we have reloaded Quark, I may try doing an install and archive on the OS. Maybe this will correct the problem?
Maybe, it depends on what's wrong with Quark. It could be that the OS is indeed damaged and preventing Quark from operating properly. But it still could be another instance of Kabel being active. You searched for Kabel by name, but that's not how fonts actually work.
Say you have a Word document on the desktop named "Budget report April 2008", but when you open it, the text is a grocery list. Fonts fall in that category. The name of a font you see on the desktop has nothing to do with the name that may show up in your programs. All fonts have an internal name. That's the one that gets reported to the system and is displayed in your applications.
A suitcase of TrueType fonts can have up to 999 fonts stuffed in it. There's no telling what you'll get in your font lists until you activate the suitcase. So it's entirely possible you have Kabel as a font that's named something else on the desktop, or you have a suitcase of fonts active that has a font declaring itself as Kabel in it.
Before going through an Archive and Install, create a new folder on the desktop. Move every font in the /Library/Fonts/ folder and the Fonts folder of your user account into the new folder. Use Font Finagler to clear the system's font cache files. Let the Mac restart.
Now move just the font named Kabel back to the folder it was originally in. If it now shows up in Quark, you had a font conflict with something else you moved out of the Fonts fodlers.

  • Can you help me with FontExplorer font activation problems?

Anyone know how to solve a font activation problem I am having with FontExplorer 4.2? I am on a new mac with new fonts, I am using Maverick with Adobe CS6. With my new mac I bought the latest version of FontExporer Pro X 4.2. This program is having trouble with font activation in all my Adoble suite apps including Indesign. Here is what I am seeing:
    1. The font activates, but the Adobe app does not recognize that it is active. If I go back to Font Explorer and deactivate manually, then re-activate manually. The adobe app might then recognize it. Sometimes it still doesn't. But this does not stay permanently, as soon as I do a restart I have to go through this process again. I see this more often with the User system fonts, but a few times with my regular fonts.
    2. Other times, such as in Indesign, I go to open the file and the file stalls and doesn’t progress while it is trying to activate the fonts.
    3. Another time I have seen after an illustrator file is opened the fonts aren't recognized as being opened and the text goes blank on the page.
    4. In all adobe apps, if I go to use "replace font" on the missing fonts (even though they are turned on) the "replace font" menu only shows the basic system fonts, it won't show me the other fonts turned on.
I have seen these issues with both formerly created files and fresh new files.
I have tried the following based on feedback from Font Explorer staff:
    Refresh your Spotlight database
    1. Quit all applications other than FontExplorer X
    2. Choose Tools > Refresh Spotlight Database
    Clean your font caches
    1. Quit all applications other than FontExplorer X 2. Choose Tools > Clean Application Font Caches (check all available checkboxes)
    3. Choose Tools > Clean System Font Caches (requires restart)
Still after trying this multiple times, the errors continue and even get more random.
I have also tried this based on their feedback:
go to FONTEXPLORER X PRO -> PREFERENCES -> ADVANCED and make sure that "Automatically deactivate fonts which have not been activated by the system" is NOT set to never.
Then click on TOOLS and clean all font caches. Then reboot the system.
The auto-activation is using a new Apple technology (called Core Text), which unfortunately does not work correctly with some of the Adobe and Quark applications when keeping the fonts permanently activated. We are currently working on an update, and the next version of FontExplorer X Pro will fix this issue.
This has also not work. Can anyone help me?

Here is the official work-around for this problem.
    1. Locate "FontExplorer X Pro.app" in Applications
    2. Right-click on "FontExplorer X Pro.app" and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Navigate to /Contents/Helpers/
    4. Double-click "FontExplorerXLauncher-3.app" or right-click and "Open" to launch it manually. This is needed only once, afterwards the plugins will work normally.
Please make sure you open the version with the "-3" suffix, the other one does not fix the problem.

  • Font Management Problems - PLEASE HELP

    Hey,
We are have six networked computers who are doing ads/layout/pagination for a newspaper. All six computers are new iMacs, all running InDesign CS3. We have a standard set of fonts that I saved on our server. On each iMac, I created a folder on the hard drive called Messenger Fonts. Then I went into FontBook and created a new library called Messenger where I added the fonts. So I thought by doing each the same way, we would not have any font problems but we do –- LOTS of them. Mostly fonts such as Gill Sans, Helvetica, Times, etc. where there is a system version of the font plus a postscript version from our font collection. I have also downloaded Suitcase Fusion (trial) on a couple of computers but I still can't get all of our fonts in sync.
Could someone please help me with a FOOL-PROOF, rock-solid, step-by-step way to set up a small office where there will be NO font conflicts, missing fonts, etc., i.e. "start by deleting these fonts from these particular folders, then blah, blah, blah"
    HELP!!!!!!!
    Neil

That's a nice short list of fonts that will cover pretty much all minimal needs. The only place you'll see problems is mostly on the web. Many, many sites use standard Microsoft fonts such as Verdana, Trebuchet MS, WingDings and Comic Sans. They'll still display of course, but the page layouts may get thrown way out of whack from the absence of the fonts they're looking for.
I guess as long as no one installs an application, such as Office, that installs it own fonts, we should stay consistent, right?
You should. But even if they do install Office, you can delete every font it puts on the system. Office used to require at least Verdana and Trebuchet MS, but Office 2004 will run without them.
We have a manageable list so I just avoided using FontBook or Suitcase.
My thought there is that a good font manager is still a very good thing to have. You can just put the fonts you want to use in either the /Library/Fonts/ folder, or the Fonts folder in the currently active user account to activate, and remove to deactivate; but you run a bit of risk damaging the fonts by constantly moving or copying them all over the place. With Suitcase or MasterJuggler, you can activate/deactivate them from wherever they reside. Not that manually moving fonts in and out of a Fonts folder doesn't work, it's just much easier to use a font manager.

  • MacBook Pro running slow if at all and font conflicts

My MacBook Pro is really not responding and I keep getting pop ups that say there is a conflict with a font file.  I was just on it on Sunday morning and it worked just fine.  Later that evening these font conflicts appeared, but I hadn't done anything crazy for them to pop up.  Please help..

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Keep Getting Font Conflicts Pop-up... Suitcase?

    Hello all.
Since this morning, my office G5 keeps popping up these small dialog boxes with the OK button about FONT conflicts:
    Suitcase
    From Suitcase
There was a conflict when attempting to activate the font Verdana in the suitcase Verdana for this document. Please close the document and resolve the conflict in the Suitcase application.
It applies the same to the other font, Tahoma, same error message.
I have tried to DEACTIVATE these two fonts inside Suitcase, and these pop-up error messages only happen in MS Entourage
It is "no big deal", but the popping up is rather annoying and irritating, 'cause every email read or click these pop-ups will appear, and I have to click OK to close them
    Thanks and cheers

these pop-up error messages only happen
    in MS Entourage

  • Grapher font conflict

Whenever I open the application "Grapher", I get the following error:
    Font Conflict
Several characters cannot be displayed correctly because of a conflict with the font "Symbol".
I have the symbol font, but I don't know how to resolve this conflict. If the font is corrupted or something, where do I get a non-corrupted replacement?
The program seems to work fine, but I'm tired of getting this warning each time I open it.
    Thanks.

    Hi Carol,
Thanks for the help, but it didn't help. I went to Font Book and found that there was a problem with a duplicate Symbol Font. I deleted the one called symbol.dfont. Now there's no conflicts with my symbol font (it's got a nice green check!), but I get the same error with Grapher.
I did a Google search and found something about Grapher giving an incorrect error message because of something with the Times font, so I validated that in Font Book also and found that there was a duplicate font there too, so I deleted that too.
I trashed my fontbook.plist file and restarted. Still getting the error message.
    Any other ideas?

  • Font Conflict with Helvetica Neue

I used Helvetica Neue font for about 10 years. With Leopard, there is a conflict with an existing system Helvetica Neue. But I need my old Helvetica Neue. To solve this, I have followed the steps in that article: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6365831 but I still have conflict problem. For example, the font used in Gmail is not the good one and characters overlap. I use Suitcase Fusion.
    What can I do?

Currently, the only way is to remove Apple's supplied versions of Helvetica. They have exactly the same internal names as the PostScript versions. Follow the instructions in section 4 of my article, Font Management in OS X, to see how to do that.

  • Font embedding problem PPT plugin Acrobat 9 Pro

    Hi,
having just updated to Acrobat 9 Pro I encounter a font embedding problem when using the PowerPoint plugin (PPT2007) to create a PDF of my presentation. I am working under Windows 7 (64Bit) and use fonts from Mathematica (Wolfram). The generated PDF shows problems displaying the fonts, indicating that they have not been embedded (although font embedding of these fonts is set in the options). The problem does not occur if I directly print to the PDF printer - here all Mathematica fonts are correctly embedded (but this has other disadvantages since videos/animations are not integrated). The problem seems to be specific to Acrobat 9 since under Acrobat 8 everything worked correctly as well.
    Any ideas/solutions for that issue?
    Thanks & best regards
    Ralf

Perhaps you may need to upgrade to version 9.2 (Acrobat support of Windows 7 begins at this dot release)?
    Be well...

  • Font rendering problem... (FLash BUG)

Hi all, I have Flash instaled on two machines and both of them are having a problem when rendring flash text.
All text on flash appears like the image bellow. And When I export to SWF the text stays the same.
The font I'm using is Myriad Pro
I'm running Flash on iMac i3 3.06 with 4Gb and 256 Graphics display so that can't be the problem.
    Anyone any ideas?

    Hi,
i know this problem. It exists since the last os-x update.
Until now there ist no solution - only two workarounds.
    a) reinstall osx and update only to an older version
    b) sometimes it helps me to close flash, restart flash and publish again.
It seems only OTF Fonts make Problems. I know about problems with MyriadPro and DIN.
There is also a problem creating PDF Files with the OS-X internal "Print as PDF" function.
I hope there will be an update soon....

I just installed Tiger (10.4.9) and am now having font conflicts. I purchased fonts from fontdiner.com and 8 of the 12 fonts are now "in conflict" with system fonts. Nothing else has changed but the installation of Tiger.
