Font Book & Access for Applications

I have been having some problems with my fonts. My 1st question is whats the difference between computer font list and user font list?
Some of my programs like PS do not have access to all of the fonts. Photoshop cs5 has more fonts than ps cs6. Its the same with the 2 after effects programs i have. Smoke has a different amount of fonts from FCP. Pages has access to about 85% of the fonts.
How do i make every font available to every program?
Running 10.7.5 on a Macpro quad 3.0 / 12gigs ram

You can download Apps smaller than 10MB from the 3G network.
You can download them from any wireless network.
I don't understand the iTunes question.
You need an iTunes account in order to download the apps, if you
don't have one you wont be able to download them, even the free ones.
You don't have to have it installed on your computer but you do need the account.
Hope that helps

  • What is font book used for? I read the description but still unsure. Does it contain fonts that are not already on the computer

What can I use font book for? I read the description but still don't get it. Does it contain fonts that are not already installed on my new Mac? Thanks.

Disabling (turning off) a font will make it unavailable for use in any font menu. You can alwasy enable the font(s) again - they're not gone permanantly. DON'T disable System fonts, though -> that's just asking for trouble.
    Here's -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdR6-4lnF5A - a good video tutorial about using Font Book.

  • Using Keychain Access for applications other than Safari

I am trying to decide what browser I want to use. There are several things to take into consideration - bookmarks kept in sync between the browers and passwords. So far I have stayed with Safari because it works with Keychain. I tried to open Keychain and add Firefox to a web form password but it doesnt appear to work. As for the bookmark issue, I downloaded "Bookdog" and it looks nice - the latest version is supposed to sync the bookmarks between the two browsers but I dont see a setting or option for that (emailed for support on that issue).
So, is there a way I can use Keychain for all of my browsers?

The following blueprint (http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0406/819-6320.pdf) describes what you want, but its not wise to put user-applications on well known ports. It wouldn't be the first time that an application crashes when a networkscanner is hammering on well known ports to find known problems. Also most of the time people are trying to bind there application on a well known port to bypass firewalls for example. So if you're going to do this, then please configure IPF for example to limit the amount of IPs that can access that port.

  • I want to access my font book fonts in Mac Pages

Anyone know how to access the font book form Mac Pages app?

Font Book is an application available to all accounts.
There are three Font folders (provided by OS X)
    /System/Library/Fonts
Contains fonts essential to the proper working of the OS and various included applications.
    /Library/Fonts
Contains the standard set of fonts provided with the OS version, and is where you should put any fonts that you want to be shared by all accounts
    ~/Library/Fonts
Is the folder in each account. Fonts in here will be available only to that account.
Log into your old account and transfer the fonts from
    ~/Library/Fonts to /Library/Fonts
"/" indicates the root (Macintosh HD), "~/" is shorthand for your user folder.

  • Type Lovers, is Font Book now fit for use?

When I installed 10.3 I was told Font Book wasn't a program written for graphic designers who use lots of fonts and keep them open often. So, I listened to the advice from some of the type gurus on these forums, got rid of lots of the fonts apple includes but I didn't need, etc., I bought Font Reserve and that has worked fine so far.
When I upgrade to Leopard, do I need to figure font management software into my budget ?
Any graphic designers out there with experience?...I mean I don't need thousands of fonts open at a time...but I do like to keep a healthy variety open and active...and what about programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign working with Font Book...do they play nice together?
    Thanks
    M

    Hi
Whomever told you this was talking nonsense. How well Font management applications perform depend to a large degree on the quality of the fonts you have. 1st and 2nd generation copies of your font library should work well with any font management application you may want to use, which includes Font Book. Certain applications can cope better with larger and more complex font lists than others. How much resources in terms of RAM, CPU/Bus Speeds as well as hard drive are all factors that need to be taken into account. For example I've successfully installed (using Font Book) nearly 1,800 fonts, however it took Quark about 30-40 minutes to load with all that information. On the other hand I've installed between 30-40 fonts (Using Suitcase this time) and it crashed Quark on launch. That's because one of the 30-40 fonts was damaged/corrupted.
Of all the font management systems that I have used the best one by far is Linotype FontExplorer X (as already mentioned)
    http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
The best thing about it apart from it being FREE is its ability to clear out system and application font caches, something other font management systems don't do.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • How do I organize Font Book fonts?

I want to get all my variations of a font into one font family in font book. For example, I want my light font, bold font, extra bold font ect. to all go under one name(under one side arrow) in font book instead of having each varitation its own arrow. When I use adobe illustrator I want to have it so there is only one name and then I can arrow over to look at all the different varations. How do I do this?

Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

  • My Font book Seems corrupted

Opened up the font book from the application. After that I mounted the Mac Font Library.dmg file AND it becomes a Mac Font Library.
I opened the Library and dragged the fonts over to the font book. However, no fonts was installed.. E.g. I was trying to installed a font library called Adobe Systems, once I drag it over to the font book, a directory called Adobe Systems was created but nothing happened after that. I click on the this newly created font library called adobe Systems but there was no fonts installed. I suspected that my font book is corrupted. The fonts couldn't be added. I tried to look into the logs under user/library/font crash report. It created something like this...(Anywhere can I download font book and installed it again? Thanks.

  • IWeb changing my fonts when accessed online!

So. I spend 6 hours putting together a simple site. I use Helvitica Nueu Ultralight font, in various sizes, but all the same. I publish.
I open, and the font is all fubar. Totally fubar. The spacing is bad. Very bad. Not good.
I google the problem, and find something about it being a problem with the black background. I change background and fix all the fonts (cause they default to, well, the default font). I publish.
    Same thing.
    Suggestions?

Well, turns out I'm a bit of an idiot - if you are having problems with fonts on iWeb, such as displaying the wrong font or substituting one font for another, you should check the health of your fonts on your own Mac.
    1) Check your browser setting. For example, on Firefox, go to <Preferences>, then select the <Content> tab, then select the <Advanced...> button. In the box that opens, check 'Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above'. This will prevent the browser from substituting a standard font for the one you've selected for your web page.
    2) Check your fonts. Find Font Book in your Applications folder. Find the font families that are giving you trouble in the list. You can check each family by selecting it, going to the <File> menu and selecting <Validate Font>. A results window will open. Select the triangle next to the font name to open up the results. Look for 'Duplicate' as an error. If so, go to <Edit>, select <Resolve Duplicates>. Repeat this for each troubled font.
Close the browsers and iWeb, reopen. The text block(s) that have been giving you trouble will need to have the font re-selected.
    Font problems should go away.

  • Where can I go to install font book?

Where do I have to go to install font book for my computer?

My computer came with font book, and for some reason it doesn't want to open. Should I have to purchase it all over again? ( I tried reloading the OS disk for my computer, and it didn't show up at all. )
Since you reinstalled the OS, then Apple's Font Book would have to be there. Meaning to us, that you're referring to Lemkesoft's FontBook. Is that right? We can't really help you until you tell us exactly which program you mean.
But to take a stab at it. Since reinstalling the OS didn't get "FontBook" back on the hard drive, then I would have to assume you mean Lemkesoft's FontBook. That is a third party application that will not be installed with the OS. If you paid for it seperately, then all you would have to do is download the latest version I linked to above and use your same serial number to activate it. No need to pay for it again.
What would be considered a default application for viewing fonts?
Normally, Apple's font manager Font Book will show you samples of the fonts on your system. But then again, so will Lemkesoft's font sample printing FontBook application without printing them out.
Our biggest hurdle here at the moment though is for you to make clear which application you're trying to get help with.

  • My fonts aren't previewing correctly in Font Book

For some reason I have random fonts in Font Book that aren't previewing correctly.  This has not always been the case but for some reason recently it is.  I have tried clearing my font cache, etc. without any success.  Thoughts?

Hello, installed any new fonts lately?
Did you Validate all fonts in Font Book & check for duplicates?

  • Font book - window pop up that says bad font

So I got my mac back after the harddrive was erased so it was brand new. I uploaded a bunch of fonts from before and I was trying to install them all. Then my computer got slower and when I would start my mac a window would pop up saying BAD FONT so I would go to the direct place and erase the font.
Is there a way to restart font book to its old settings before installing font?
or know how to find all bad fonts?
I validated the file from library-fonts and my font folder i brought in and erased the ones that had a x saying error but I still get the window.
and what is the normal amount of fonts we can have active.
also when I click on disable I don't see a difference.
I just erased the font folder I had brought in and there is no different in the amount of fonts in font book.
sorry for the questions, hope I make sense.
    thanks
I had posted this in macbook pro but cmcsk told me about posting here in hopes that I could get more help.

    Here's a great article for you . . .
It's a little long, but the most important stuff about the fonts you need
is in the first 25% of the article. The article, by Kurt Lang, will tell you which fonts you really need, etc.
    http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html
The only thing still giving me pause, is you statement that you're clicking on the "Mac HD
from the computer." If you are seeing the icon the Mac, and the word "computer" totally
within the Font Book pane, then that's fine to delete fonts marked with a warning.
Just make sure you read the beginning of the article first, OK?

  • Having Font Book problems since upgrading to Tiger.

Once I upgrade to Panther, I pitched Suitcase, and have been using Font Book exclusively for activating Fonts and such.
After upgrading to Tiger font book has basically rendered itself worthless for me. At least half of my old font wont load through font book. On alot of my type 1 fonts, if I drag them to Font Book, then the font will appear to be loaded and activated, but actually only the scren font was copied to the fonts folder (user/library/fonts). If I manually copy the fonts into this folder, then they sow up in my Adobe apps (CS2), but still print lo res.
For now I have ditched Font Book, and have been using Font Explorer X, and it works flawlessly, but I'd rather use Font Book if I can get it to behave, as I like the interface better.
In addition, I am also unable to load many PC TT fonts through Font Book Tiger, that I had no problem loading through FB in Panther.
Any Ideas, or is it just buggy?

Well, Font Book under Tiger is still buggy, but it's better than under Panther, and not buggy in the ways you describe, so there's something else going on.
Adobe apps will "load" a bitmapped font into their menus but then tell you, if you select them, that the printer file is missing and printing will be at lo-res, which is what you're describing. You say you "manually copy these fonts to the folder"; by "these fonts" are you referring to the printer files (which you said were not being copied to the Users fonts folder thru Font Book)?
The mystery is how Font Book is helping you install fonts which are apparently bitmap suitcases without copying the printer files along with it to the target folder.
So, a couple of things to check, choosing just one or two of the problem fonts to manipulate:
-When you "drag to Font Book" where are you dragging them? Depending on where you drop them, they could go to the default Install folder (set in Preferences), or someplace else. If you drag them to the Classic Mac OS library in Font Book, that could let you install bitmap-only suitcase fonts (without their PostScript companions). These will only show up in Classic apps and in Adobe apps, as described above.
-Might your suitcase files have both TrueType and bitmapped versions of a font inside? That might explain why only the suitcase file is being installed thru Font Book - it's just ignoring the bitmap.
In all, it still "feels" like a problem of bitmaps without their printer files... did you rename the printer files, by any chance? That will keep the OS from finding them at print time.
Did you clean everything up after ditching Suitcase? I don't know what artifacts you might be dealing with.
As for the PC TTs that worked before but not now... that's the real puzzler.
In both cases - your Type 1s and TTs, what happens when you put them right into the Fonts folder, bypassing Font Book.
Get back with more info, and we'll get back with more analysis...

  • I have not accessed my iBooks for a month. When I opened the application a while ago I found that all my books except for 2books have disappeared. What happened and how can I retrieve my books?

I have not accessed my iBook library for a month. When I opened the application awhile ago I found that all my books except for 2 books have disappeared. What happened and how can I retrieve my books.
    Charles

One possible reason is have you synced to your computer's iTunes recently ? If so then it might have replaced the books that were on your iPad with those that are on your computer's iTunes library.
You should be able to re-download them via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app, or via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes and then sync them back to the iPad : re-downloading. If you re-download them directly on your iPad then you may want to copy them to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, so that you have a backup copy of them and to see if it stops them disappearing from the iPad again when you sync (assuming that was the reason why they disappeard).

  • Fonts are not displayed properly when Book assembled for PRINT Preview

I am having an issue with fonts not being displayed correctly within Aperture Book design application. I have used a script font (Snell Roundhand) for the cover of my book that has quotations marks around the title. However the quotations marks that are displayed after the book is assembled, go to the default Times Roman not Snell. They do not match the Snell Roundhand font quotations that are supplied with that font. What gives? Also . . . after they the dust cover is displayed the next page is the hard bound foil page which displays Times Roman for the title . . . not the font I have selected (Snell Roundhand). What gives with that? Is there a way to change the font before it goes to the printer. Any work around ideas. I have tried several different fonts to see if anything else comes close. Everything looks like a variation of Times. HELP . . . trying to hit PURCHASE BOOK . . . . hopefully without flaws!!

I kind of remember the foil letters might be fixed - cannot remember but here is a related conversation that might help (or not)

Ps. I have not done this through the Apple book printing service myself - I always order soft cover as give aways and use another service for other printing but live vicariously through others withe the Apple hardcover books.

  • Fonts disabled in Font Book all still on in applications (after SL upgrade)

I've successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard on my 2Ghz intel mac. I had some initial problems with fonts but all now working except that despite fonts being disabled in Font Book they are still active in all applications. As I have 500+ this is really annoying.
I've run Disk Utility. What else? - any ideas how to sort this out???

The database for Font Book is in a completely different location in Snow Leopard. The update doesn't seem to always do the hand off correctly as I've seen a fair number of posts stating the same problem. Resetting Font Book's database should fix it.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. Any font sets you have created will be gone. Also, all fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
