Font Book Broken
Hello. A couple months ago I purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro, mid-2012. It's running Mavericks.
Font Book has never worked. I've tried installing multiple fonts, and though hitting "Install Font" on the popup window opens Font Book the font is never installed. In fact, I can't see any fonts in "All Fonts" at all. Searching online forums led me to the workaround strategy of typing something into the search field, which will bring up font names, and then deleting the text in the search field. Somehow this leaves me with the full list of fonts, and confirms that nothing I try to install is available. I've tried drag 'n' drop, installing different kinds of font files (.suit, .ttf., etc.), and nothing works. Something has clearly gone awry with Font Book. Any ideas?
Sylvae,
you could try booting into Recovery mode and reïnstalling OS X in place, to see if that solves the Font Book problem. If it doesn’t, make a backup of your personal files, boot into Recovery mode again, erase your internal disk using Disk Utility, and use OS X Internet Recovery to redownload your MacBook Pro’s original version of OS X from Apple’s servers. You would then run Software Update to get that version of OS X up to date. If its original version of OS X wasn’t Mavericks, you could then redownload Mavericks from the Mac App Store, reïnstall it, and run Software Update to get Mavericks up to date. You could then test Font Book to see if it works properly; if it does, restore your personal files from the backup.

Installing fonts without Font Book
Font Book is broken (it won't start at all) and at the moment I don't have immediate access to a Tiger CD.
Is there a way that either
(a) Font Book can be fixed without the CD
(b) a font can be installed using an application other than Font Book?
Thank you very much in advance.well... this is probably not good advice but I used the following method before I realised that Font Book would install fonts!
Simply drag the fonts into the user/library/fonts folder, start up you app and they should be there.
But maybe you should get Font Book fixed first! Have you run Disk Utility from the intall disk and checked permissions etc? -
Shared network font library - using Font Book
I'm a trying to set up a "font server" on my company's OS X Server. I have created a folder within the SHARED ITEMS folder called Library, and placed all the fonts within a FONTS folder. I can now mount the folder on a clients/artists desktop just fine, so the shared point is working.
The problem is, I don't want to have to mount another "drive" to the artists desktop. I want the artists to use Font Book with a "Network" globe to which they can use the fonts.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this....and I think it may have somthing to do with the /Network/Library....it's an alias that seems to be broken. Shouldn't the "Library" alias be a folder???
Here is the Library alias info:
Kind: Alias
Size: 1kb on disk
Where: /Network
Server: nfs://automount%20-nsl%20%5B142]
Original: /automount/Library
It's interesting that it says "nfs://" because I've got it set up as "AFP" on the server.
Any suggestions?
PowerMac G5 Dual Mac OS X (10.4.8)
PowerMac G5 Dual Mac OS X (10.4.8)If you use Workgroup Manager and your clients are bound to the server via LDAP - try this, it works for us.
On your server, put a folder called "Library" wherever you wish (outside of System and Library for the Server itself and not inside another shared item). Put a folder called "Fonts" in the new "Library" folder
Open WGM
Go to Sharing
Select "All"
Find and Select your "Library" folder
Under General select "share item and contents"
Under Access set permissions - ours are Root rw, Admin rw, Everyone read only. Propogate permissions to the contained folders.
Under Protocols disable any protocols you don't plan to use. With AFP make sure it is called "Library" and that guest access is possible. We have all other protocols disabled.
Under Network Mount select "enable network mounting," choose AFP as protocol and make sure that the mount is Used for "shared library"
If your clients are bound to the server via LDAP, reboot them and the client machines will connect to the server and use your new shared "Library" there as an option after the "Library" folders in the client machine itself. The new library will not need to be mounted on the users desktop as it will already be mounted by the client itself. The fonts will show up in Font Book under Network.
Put your fonts in the "Fonts" folder in the new "Library" folder on the server and all clients should now be able to access them. You can put other Library items in the network accessable folder just like the fonts and have them accessable to all bound clients.
hope this helps

Better font check than with Font Book?
Hi,
I have checked the fonts with Font Book. Everything seems to be okay but I still assume that there might be a broken font.
Is there a better check than I as a relatively new Apple user can find in font book?
Can it be that a programm (like Ghost View) copied new fonts into the font folder that are not checked with font book?
The reason why I believe that fonts are broken is that my system cannot display .eps files anymore which might supposedly be related to a broken font.
Thanks,
KurtThere are several good tips on Fonts in the User Tips Library:

How do I use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document?
How does one use the Japanese fonts in Font Book in a Pages document. Pages has its own fonts but I cannot get the Japanese fonts into it.
To type japanese on a computer you change the keyboard, not the font. Go to system prefs/keyboard/input sources and add Japanese/Kotoeri to the list, then select Hiragana in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, then type. The font will take care of itself.

Using Pages 5.2, I open a document created in a previous version, and I get error messages about certain fonts within a font family being "not available" in OS X. However, these supposedly unavailable fonts are present in Font Book and work just fine in all other apps running on OS X. In fact, I still have the older version of Pages on my system, and it still finds the fonts without issue. The specific fonts troubling me at the moment are Myriad Pro Semibold It and Myriad Pro Cond. Pages 5.2 replaces them with Helvetica. I have wasted hours of time trying to resolve this problem, and I am at a total loss. What can I do?
Like so many other thing is is probably gone. Why not use Pages 09 that has about 100 features more than Pages 5. If you haven't deleted it it should still be in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

What are the names of those fonts? Have you downloaded and installed the special Zawgyi font?
What is it exactly that you cannot read? Can you provide the url? -
How do I use a font variation in a pages document? or other app for that matter? I no longer have the "viewer" - glyph option in the special characters pane (under edit in toolbar). How do I use the fonts in my font book in Word?
I have created several documents and used fonts that I like, such as Sand, Verdana, and Textile. I imported them into my font book, but they are not available in my Word or Excel documents. Anyone have any ideas on how I can use them?
Nancy,
I'm afraid I don't know the answer, if no one on this forum answers I'd also recommend posting on the Office for Mac Product Forums. BTW when posting it's helpful to post what version of MS Word you're referring to. Snow Leopard will run Word 2004, 2008 & 2011 so you need to be a bit more specific. -
HT2509 Font Book not working correctly? or Text Edit not working correctly?
I downloaded a font onto Font Book and it works perfectly on Font Book and all the characters and symbols come up correctly, as they should. Then when I use it on Text Edit, it replaces the ', " and @ with a $ sign. What can I do to fix this, or is it unfixable? I'm using a Mac OS X 10.7.5 and I'm not sure what could be causing this situation.
It does that because that's the way the lazy person who created this font built it. Here's the layout of the font you're having trouble with:
Now compare it to the OS X supplied font Andale Mono:
Note on the third line, second from the right that Andale Mono has an @ symbol in the "at" position. The person who created the font you downloaded types a $ sign because that's what they put there, along with dozens of other glyph positions (must have really loved how they drew that $ sign). Which when you look where the quote and apostrophe are, they are also filled with the $ glyph.
The font is a piece of junk. Delete it. -
New fonts look fine in Font Book don't work in apps
I need someone's help. I understand that to install new fonts I can either bring them into my font book (and chose whether they apply to a user or to the system) or can drag them directly into library/fonts or user/library/fonts. I am looking for some new foreign language fonts (e.g. hebrew - cursive, for example). I found some possibilities - ttf fonts - downloaded them, put them into my font book, they validated fine and within the font book they look right (i.e. as they are supposed to). I then quit the font book and go into my app, and it's not happening. When I go into MS word (2008), they don't all appear in the various menus (e.g. I made a font collection for one set, and only two appear in that collection), and when I go to use the ones that appear the font does not look much different from the latin alphabet font that was there before. So, I then tried Apple Mail and, while all the fonts appear in the font collection folder, when I choose any of them, same thing, my test letters are still in the same alphabet - size and intensity a little different, that's all.
Someone told me that for MS Office that there is a separate folder somewhere for office fonts - is that true - where is that? Also, why aren't any of my fonts doing what they're supposed to do in a native Mac application, Apple Mail, despite the fact that they look as advertised in my font books?
Frustrated & confused...my test letters are still in the same alphabet
To generate non-Latin text in a modern OS you can't just change the font, you need to change the keyboard layout. Go to system prefs/international/input menu and check the box for Hebrew or whatever you want, plus the box for "show input menu in finder." Then select Hebrew in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder and type.
You need to make sure you use Unicode fonts. Also MS Word does not yet support correct Hebrew, so use another app. For that script, Mellel is the best. See the applications section of this note:

Font Book "not compatible" with 10.9 after upgrade from 10.7
I upgraded from os x 10.7 to 10.9 on my iMac and now my font book won't open. I keep getting a message that says my version of font book is not compatible with 10.9. Is there a way to reinstall font book?
No,
You should download and install the 10.9.4 combo update. OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
As with any system upgrade or update it is wise to backup first. -
The fontd process crashes every time I launch Font Book
Crash report is below. Looks like it's the com.apple.xtype.FontRegistry thread that's crashing. I found a similar problem talked about for 10.5 that suggested installing the latest COMBO update. How do you guys suggest I try to fix this with Lion? Does this require that I reinstall my OS?
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated...

=========== =======
TOTAL 315.7M
TOTAL, minus reserved VM space 315.1MThe FontRegistry database is used by Font Book. It's probably corrupt. fontd's main purpose is to run when fonts are being activated, or deactivated. It appears to be crashing due to being unable to access the database.
To clear Font Book's database:
1) Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files for the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. In Leopard or earlier, any font sets you have created will be gone. Also, all fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
2) Clear all font cache files from the system and restart.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command (or copy/paste it from here):
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
The next time you launch Font Book, it will create a new database. -
How can I copy a Font Book library with "Collections" to my 2nd laptop?
How can I copy a Font Book library with "Collections" to my 2nd laptop?
I have a number of fonts (approx. 500) on my work laptop which are sorted to different Collections. I'd like to have a copy of the Font Book library with Collections on the laptop I use at home to work. I'd think there was a more straight forward way to do it, but I haven't found any posts regarding the matter so any help would be appreciated.
ThanksTo anyone who is reading this based on needing to copy their Font Book to another machine as I do, there is a way to make a copy of the fonts in Font Book by going to file/export fonts. Keep in mind that you will need to have all the fonts selected (command A) in your "All Fonts" list for them to be exported. You will then have a new folder saved to where ever you chose, with all your Font Book fonts in it.

Fonts isn't showing up in Font Book but does in some apps
I have a particular font that I use in a number of applications - Peignot. In fact it shows up in Text Edit, Mail, and Business Card Composer, to name a few. But it doesn't appear in Font Book, and more to the point, it doesn't show up in Word or any of the Adobe applications. It's clearly in my user Fonts folder and has been for months. I've only noticed the problem because I've tried to use this font in Illustrator. Can anyone tell me how this font can be present for some apps but not others? And is obviously installed but doesn't show up in Font Book?
I just needed to reinstall a fresh version
