Font Book "finds 80 minor problems proceed with caution"

Just happened to discover this. When I select All Fonts and then validate it comes back and says that there are 80 minor problems proceed with caution. What does this mean? I don't think I have been having any problems. It appears that when you look at one of the fonts that have a problem there actually two of them listed. It tried to resolve duplicates and it makes no difference.

I wouldn't trust them if Font Book doesn't like them, bad fonts can really mess up OSX itself.

  • What do you think of this book: "Programming and Problem Solving with Java"

    Hello Everyone:
This may be a strange post but I am wondering if anyone has read this book and what do you think of it?
    Book Information
Title: Programming and Problem Solving with Java
Authors: Neell Dale, Chip Weens, Mark Headington
    Publisher: Jones & Bartlett
    Thanks for any comments

No believe me the book is bad! The only reason I asked is I am in a university class that uses those two books for there course. The author messed up on HelloWorld.java with 4 errors at compile time! How can anyone be that stupid since they are the ones who are supposed to be teaching me the fundamentals of Java. Anyhow I just wanted other people's thoughts about the books.
    Thanks again for your input.

  • Speed testing proceed with caution??

I've been fascinated by the various reports of variable speeds being seen on  various different speed testing sites, so I've been having a play, and the results have been, shall we say, interesting.
Let's start at the top. No matter which machine I access it from, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ shows me 56megs down and 12.89 up, with a max achievable of 60.1/20.
Namesco's  ( http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ ) shows 33623/14734 on my "work" partition, but if I reboot into another partition which is set up for webcasting, it, too reports the full 56megs down and 14/15 up. Same connection, same wires, barely five minutes apart on Mac OS X 10.7.3 in both partitions.
If I then, boot back into the work partition, and bring up Speedtest.net not only on there, but also on a couple of other machines, and set them all to check simultaneously, the combined total of the download speeds is - guess... yup, 56megs down and around 14 up.
Aside from quite fancying my connection giving me that full 20megs up (OK, I know, it'll be 19 or so), I'm really quite happy with this - and it does point out that, in all likelihood, severely fluctuating speed tests may not necessarily be line-related. If I wasn't able to reproduce all of this more or less at will, I may have thought differently, but it's an entirely repeatable excercise.

Yes indeed, none of the speedtests are reliably accurate all the time as their servers and routes to the server are subject to varying conditions. Speedtest.net is very dependent on which server you select, as their automatic server selection chooses based on ping results, which does not always give you a server with the fastest data rates (my results vary from 35 to 70Mbps, or as low as 2Mbps if you go out as far as New Zealand ). BT's main http://speedtester.bt.com/ (diagnostics) is up the pole for most of the day and is only any use for finding out your profile. However, their beta test is pretty good and is always worth trying: http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.jsp
BBMax is often said to be the best one but that could just be because it uses a much smaller download file and the test lasts for a shorter period of time. That means there is less scope for varying line and server conditions to intervene, and for Internet Security programs to slow things down.
    So what I do is:
    a) Turn off my Internet Security program (this can be very important)
    b) find the fastest speedtest.net server and use that result
    c) use BT beta speedtest (as I already know my profile)
    d) check BBMax
The results of these three methods are nearly always between 69.x Mbps and 71.x Mbps, my profile is 72.8 Mbps. I don't think you'll ever get your 19Mbps upload by the way as I am on a 20Mbps cap but the fastest upload speed I've seen is 16.x binary Mbps and 17.x decimal Mbps.

  • Font Book Works Great - What am I missing?

I rejected Font Book a long time ago. But I recently bought a new MBP and decided to give everything that ships with OS X Leopard a new try. Most notable was my experience with Font Book. I started playing with Font Book in lieu of FontExplorer X which had been working fine, except that it took a long time to load after logins/restarts. Granted, I no longer have thousands of fonts to manage. But I still open a lot of documents that use fonts that I don't always want active.
With Font Book in Leopard it appears that as long as Font Book has a font in a library, even though the font location is not in one of the "official" user or systemwide font folders, then it will nevertheless render and print it in the application--everything from the Adobe CS4 suite to MS Office 2008 and others. Even though the font is NOT shown to be active in Font Book, it seems to work as though it IS active when needed. After the document is closed the font remains "off." Very cool.
I can still see the advantages of Suitcase, FontExplorer X Pro, etc. for production shops or large design studios. But Font Book now seems almost too good to be true for more typical users. In earlier OS X versions it seemed to be next to worthless. Am I missing something or has Font Book really become as great a tool as it appears?

It sounds like the bugs in the Autoactivation feature described in this article may have been fixed, at least in your experience.

  • Only 10 fonts in Font Book, though all seem to be working

Only 10 fonts appear in Leopard Font Book, though the standard font palette in Pages etc indicates that all my hundreds of fonts are working. I've tried "adding" my User Fonts folder to no avail, and deep cleaning all caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner didn't help either.
Am I alone, and if not, is there a fix for this?

Answering this and the next posting in one:
The fonts listed in the User list are:
    Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold
    Abadi MT Condensed Light
    Adobe Garamond
    Adobe Jenson
    Adobe Wood Type
    AkzidenzGrotesk
    Andale Mono
    Frutiger
    ITC Anna
    ITC Fenice
These are the same 10 that I mentioned in my original posting.
Of these, only Fenice is marked as a duplicate, but the Resolve Duplicates command does nothing. None of the listed fonts can be disabled using the checkbox or menu command.
If further User fonts are manually loaded, many (in fact most) of them are marked as duplicates, but the same comments apply (i.e. neither Resolve Duplicates nor Disable does anything).
After a number (a dozen or so) fonts are manually added, Font Book will start to crash with each addition.
My Leopard installation was Customized to avoid installing the additional Asian fonts. Subsequently, I reinstalled (using Pacifist), the /System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts folders. I then placed my other fonts into /Users/Home/Library/Fonts manually, but although they function correctly in applications, Font Book does not see them and will not load them, either all at once or a few at a time. The fonts have a variety of origins including Adobe, Microsoft and others, but all of them have previously been verified OK by both Font Book (Tiger edition) and Font Doctor.

  • Lion Font Book problem with Adobe FontFolio 11

I have a fresh install of Lion. My problem is with FontFolio 11. It installs well, finds duplicates etc. The problem happens only after i deactivate all of the fontfolio fonts. After they have all be deactivated, if I click on any other font collection, fontd jumps up to 99% CPU usage and Font Book not responding. After 5 minutes of this Font Book's Real Mem usage slowly starts to increase, sometimes up to 3 gigs. Eventually, I am able to click through collection with no delay, however, after a system restart or just a Font Book restart, the process starts over and i have to wait.
    I have tried:
Clearing every font cache file I can think of.
Using Font Finagler to clear font caches.
    Restarting in safe mode.
    Creating a new user.
Nothing has made this problem go away.
So, what exactly is happening? Why is Font Book fast and responsive with my 427 fontfolio fonts active, but when i deactivate them it slows to a crawl and goes through the same CPU/memory cycle every time? I have research and experimented for a solid week. I can't waste any more time on this. I'm this close to giving LION and Font Book the big thumbs down and buying something that actually works.
I never had a problem with snow leopard using Font Book and the same version font folio.

    Same here. My thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15995212#15995212
I've had no replies. Have you looked at Activity Monitor while this is happening? check it out. I think i'm just going to go back to Leopard, don't know what else to do. Do you have an SSD in there?

  • Problems with Font Book

I run my own literary magazine, and recently I purchased and installed a 4000 font package onto my computer. Needless to say, it wasn't the most intelligent thing to do, because every program that runs with fonts, like Photoshop, InDesign, and even Word, take five to six minutes to start up. I want to restore to my original fonts that came with my PowerBook without resetting my hard drive, and I honestly have no idea how to do it. If someone could enlighten me on this topic I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Upon inspecting Font Book, it seems like you could highlight any fonts or font families and use "file/remove" or "edit/disable"

  • Is anyone else having problems with Font Book?

Recently tried to add some Hallowe'en fonts. Font Book seems to start, i.e., the first page opens, but it refuses to add the font, and sits there spinning the beachball. I have to force quit, get a demand to report to Apple - which I have now done 3-4 times.
Tried to open the program by itself, got the exact same response! Really do not know where to turn... help!!!

    I'm having the same issue...
I just viewed the Font Management in OS X but I'm literally sitting at my desk lost looking at that. I desperately need help, cause I have new fonts I want to install.
    Thanks!

  • Problems with custom preview in Font Book

I just recently upgraded to Mountain lion and noticed that when I am browsing my fonts in Fontbook using custom preview that some fonts will switch to sample preview.  But when it does that the preview pane gives me a sample view of all the weights of that font. For example: As I scroll down through the list of fonts using custom preview and I get to the Arial font the preview pane will switch from whatever I haved typed into it to a sample preview of Arial, Arial Italic, Arial Bold, and Arial Bold Italic.  I can use custom preview for those fonts but I have to select the weight of that font in order to do it.  Is there a way to turn that off or fix it so I can quickly browse through my fonts using custom preview?
*I did not do a clean install of mountain lion and I also have adobe font folio loaded into my fonts.

If you are like me opening each font-family and requesting a custom preview is out of the question. You want to scroll quickly through all of your fonts, showing your custom text, waiting for the ood options to leap out at you. What was once a minute or 2 of tapping the down arrow is now an hour of tedious clicking.
I have not gotten Font Book to do what it used to do. But I purchased an app from the App Store called FontPreview (4.99) and it does what Font Book used to. Perhaps not as well, but it will do for me until Font Book fixes this "bug" which renders it useless for me.
I am not endorsing the app. I have used it for 5 minutes. Just trying to help those as frustrated as I am. I am attaching a link.

  • Font Book problem

When I find a font I think I'll use someday I save it as link source. I have been noticing when I install fonts, the Font Book install window tells me not installed (see attachment, bottom left)
I see it in the book,I even use it , no problem. But why is it, the install process does not recognize it is already installed, even after I just installed it.It reads not installed after a restart also, but it is there.

I download from web, to my download folder .(tried) to show pictures but I can not, anyway, the file is a .ttf file(most are). I double click it , it opens it gives me the option to install,I click install, FontBook comes up with it installed but if I open the .ttf file again it says not installed, but it is. It just seems that it should show I already have it installed, so it is not installed again. is that more clear.?I'm not so good with punctuation.

  • Font book or CS2 font problem?

I am using a mac Pro, running OS 10.4.11, w/ CS2. I am having a problem with either font book or CS2. Certain fonts are not viewing correctly when I use them in CS2 programs. I get a font error when I open the file, and when I try to fix the font by choosing the same name again, the font appears as another font entirely (in fact after I closed and reopened everything the font it substituted changed, and if I choose italic it changes fonts again). I do not know if the issue is with font book or CS2, but I have installed around 1500 fonts, and have had some other minor issues when I open files in Adobe programs, with fonts not showing up even though they are installed and enabled. I fix that problem by disabling the font and then re-enabling it and it then shows up in the font list.
So after all that, my question is what should I do? Should I reinstall CS2? Or is the problem more likely cause by font book?
    Thanks

  • Corrupted fonts Gone from Font Book / problem remains

_I have spent all day paying for the recklessness of installing fonts willy-nilly , I have now learned of font valication, and dozens of new things but, after using advice from Dr.Smokes' eBook & other sources, I still get such pages as the Apple start-up full of upside-down looking junk !
Can anyone help my addled, swollen brain, & point me towards the next step, or where to find it
    ~~TIA~~ --=Dave t_

    Hi, Dave:
    1. You've not provided any of the useful details needed to help solve your problem. For example:1.1. What fonts did you install?
1.2. How and where did you install them?
1.3. What fonts have you since removed?
1.4. How, and from where, did you remove them? The people answering questions here are not clairvoyant. WIthout such details, there's little to nothing that can be done to help you.
    2. If I assume you installed them via Font Book, and did not change Font Book's default preferences for where fonts are installed, then:2.1. The fonts you installed are probably in your Home > Library > Fonts folder. If so, either trash them or create a new folder on your desktop and drag all the fonts in your Home > Library > Fonts folder to such. Assure your Home > Library > Fonts folder is empty.
2.2. Then, clear your font cache: see my "Undoing Font Book" FAQ or the "Reset Font Book" section in my book.
2.3. Also, clear your browser's cache. If you are using Safari, then press Command-Option-E.3. If none of the above helps, or if you may have trashed system-related fonts, then the next thing I would suggest is performing an Archive and Install of Mac OS X. See either the "Archive and Install" chapter in my book or my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
You know how to reach me if any of the above requires further clarification.
    Good luck!

  • Replacing Fonts Removed with Font Book

Font Book shows that several fonts that I frequently use, such as Times New Roman, have problems. If I remove them, where do I find replacements--the MS Office install disc, and do I have to reinstall the entire MS Office?

Start with Font Management in OS X
and if that doesn't solve your issues, see:

Recently while browsing with TenFourFox 31.6.0 or reading an email in Thunderbird 3.1.20 with my PPC MacG4 with OSX 10.4.11,the above message pops in "  ... a problem has been detected with the font -, in the font file $C quit all applications and remove this font file or replace it with a new version". I don't know where to start, not ever having seen this message.  :-))  Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.
    -- Raymon

Hi Raymon, it sounds like file corruption, I doubt there is a real font file called that.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If still no change after a regular boot, then open Font Book in Applications & see if you can find it there, or have Font Book Validate all fonts.

  • Having Font Book problems since upgrading to Tiger.

Once I upgrade to Panther, I pitched Suitcase, and have been using Font Book exclusively for activating Fonts and such.
After upgrading to Tiger font book has basically rendered itself worthless for me. At least half of my old font wont load through font book. On alot of my type 1 fonts, if I drag them to Font Book, then the font will appear to be loaded and activated, but actually only the scren font was copied to the fonts folder (user/library/fonts). If I manually copy the fonts into this folder, then they sow up in my Adobe apps (CS2), but still print lo res.
For now I have ditched Font Book, and have been using Font Explorer X, and it works flawlessly, but I'd rather use Font Book if I can get it to behave, as I like the interface better.
In addition, I am also unable to load many PC TT fonts through Font Book Tiger, that I had no problem loading through FB in Panther.
Any Ideas, or is it just buggy?

Well, Font Book under Tiger is still buggy, but it's better than under Panther, and not buggy in the ways you describe, so there's something else going on.
Adobe apps will "load" a bitmapped font into their menus but then tell you, if you select them, that the printer file is missing and printing will be at lo-res, which is what you're describing. You say you "manually copy these fonts to the folder"; by "these fonts" are you referring to the printer files (which you said were not being copied to the Users fonts folder thru Font Book)?
The mystery is how Font Book is helping you install fonts which are apparently bitmap suitcases without copying the printer files along with it to the target folder.
So, a couple of things to check, choosing just one or two of the problem fonts to manipulate:
-When you "drag to Font Book" where are you dragging them? Depending on where you drop them, they could go to the default Install folder (set in Preferences), or someplace else. If you drag them to the Classic Mac OS library in Font Book, that could let you install bitmap-only suitcase fonts (without their PostScript companions). These will only show up in Classic apps and in Adobe apps, as described above.
-Might your suitcase files have both TrueType and bitmapped versions of a font inside? That might explain why only the suitcase file is being installed thru Font Book - it's just ignoring the bitmap.
In all, it still "feels" like a problem of bitmaps without their printer files... did you rename the printer files, by any chance? That will keep the OS from finding them at print time.
Did you clean everything up after ditching Suitcase? I don't know what artifacts you might be dealing with.
As for the PC TTs that worked before but not now... that's the real puzzler.
In both cases - your Type 1s and TTs, what happens when you put them right into the Fonts folder, bypassing Font Book.
Get back with more info, and we'll get back with more analysis...
