Font book is slow to load

Since upgrading to Yosemite I have a problem with Font Book now being EXTREMELY slow in loading.
Under Mavericks the collection list shows up almost immediately and the full font list comes up in about 10 seconds for about 15 seconds to load the 617 font families, of which only about 25 are normally active. (I am in publishing/graphics and have a need for many font families)
Under Yosemite the font list shows up after about 15 seconds but the collection list takes 50 seconds!!!
There is the exact same number of fonts active but a 35 second difference in the speed to bring the app to full capability.
Font book appears to be loading the information in the reverse order with Yosemite and perhaps this is the cause for the big delay in loading.
Any suggestions other than?

I also forgot to add that for some of the pages that don't load or load slow.  if you actually type the address into the address bar preceeded by "https://" instead of relying on search links or bookmarks it will load.

  • Every time I add a font to Font Book it doesn't load

I have so much trouble adding any fonts on my new MacBook Pro! Most times when I go to Fontbook and Add Font and select a font to add, the font display box will flicker and then the font won't load in Fontbook. It will be in the library but not in Fontbook and will not show up in Illustrator. If I have tried to load ANY outside fonts on the computer, Illustrator will crash when I try to scroll to a new font selection. Does anyone have a fix for this?
I have been on the phone with apple tech support for days and days and tried everything they have offered but they are stumped.

When was the last time you did an update on your iphone? That might be the problem. BTW which OS are you running on your MacBook?

  • Fonts will not automatically enable in Font Book, fonts also will not load Adobe CS5 Indesign or Illustrator.

    Hello,
My fonts stopped enabling automatically in font book, and do not load in Adobe Indesign CS5 or Illustrator CS5 when I use these programs.
The font names are usually displayed in brackets such as [Times New Roman] in the drop down menu for fonts.
So far I've found two different libraries for font, but I'm not sure about deleting them for fear of losing my fonts.
Also where do I find the font cache? If I clear it, can I possibly get the fonts to enable themselves again.
I'm using a 2006 Macbook Pro, and running Snow Leopard (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
Thank you in advance for any help.

Thank you for your reply. I have a few comments of my own.
    (1) You, ~Bee, accused me of using "another person's wisdom here". In some quarters, this would be called plagiarism.
If I were Oscar Wilde, I'd say that bad manners were a far more grievous sin than plagiarism. But I'm not. Good manners is one thing, and I'll be the first to admit that my manners can stand a considerable degree of improvement. Plagiarism is something quite different, and I deeply resent being accused of such an action.

  • Fonts won't load into Leopard Font Book

My fonts won't load into my font book, but they are loading into the system. I reloaded my OS software hoping it would fix the problem, but it hasn't. Anyone with suggestions on what to do would be greatly apprecitated!!!

My fonts won't load into my font book, but they are loading into the system.
That's kind of contradicting. Are you saying you can manually place the fonts into a Fonts folder and they'll work, but can't be added to Font Book? Or they aren't working at all? If they're Type 1 PostScript fonts, read on.
Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Font Book problems under 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5 and completing Software Update immediately to 10.5.5, I have noticed some quirks in Font Book. I did not use Font Book after the installation/upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5 until 10.5.5 was operational.
    1) I have over 400 font families, but all but about 50 are normally inactivated. The new Font Book is slow as molasses to show any fonts the first time it is opened on a fresh boot. Former versions would start showing some of the fonts and add to the list as the files were read from the library by Font Book. Now it sits and sits until all have been read to display anything (close to 15 seconds). At least before one knew if it was working and not just showing a spinning beach ball. Doesn't seem a change for the better.
    2) Font Book used to show all fonts quickly once it had been opened under a current startup of system. Now there is a lag in the display (8-10 sec), but not nearly as bad as current initial openings, but longer than the previous system version.
This next point is REALLY annoying:
    3) When inactivating a duplicate of a font face (i.e. inactivating the TT version when want only the PS1), I can click on the style to be inactivated and before I can get down to click to inactivate BOTH styles become highlighted so I will deactivate/activate both if I don't watch what is happening. This happens virtually every time I do this procedure and never occurred in versions prior to 10.5.5. (Since I didn't use anything on the computer until I updated to 10.5.5, I don't know at what point of the 10.5 cycle this might have begun.)

I am in publishing and have a true postscript laser printer. Font are not just regular type, but phonetic, language and music fonts. Given a choice, I will take PS over TT anytime and I have a large investment in Adobe fonts..
Bad fonts aren't installed and I disable duplications when they occur with PS/TT/OT fonts.
I still make the point that I am using exactly the same fonts that were used with 10.4.11 - nothing added or deleted, the same ones active or inactive. Font Book did NOT behave this way until I upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11.
(For those that don't remember their history, TT was developed by Apple and adopted by Microslop because they couldn't conveniently deal with PS.)

  • Font Book and Trash

First. when FB finds a serious issue, does it not load it?
Next. is it possible to extract a faulty version of a font that has several variations of that font inside.
In the "olden" days with ... was it called "Suitcase" or something like that... we could open a font file see what was inside and remove any variations.
If we can't do that with FB, what does anyone recommend. I have a faulty Bookman Bold, but in my Bookman folder all I see in Finder is:
    Bookman
    BookmBolSwa
    BookmBolSwaIta
    BookmCon
    BookmOut
    BookmOutSwa
So I'm guessing it lives inside "Bookman"
If I can't delete Bookman Bold, then my only alternative is to trash the entire font? Or at minimum Bookman?
This all started because I was reviewing my logs and see a number of failed validations. Oddly, I never turned these fonts on, so it seems like my Mac is checking all fonts whether installed or not? Here's an example:
    May 11 12:24:09 stevens-mac-pro mdworker[326]: FontImporter: Validation failed - "/Volumes/New Pro/Users/ss/Documents/FONTS ARCHIVE/FFVortex/F.t1".
So I opened up Font Book and started temporarily loading fonts so I could find the faulty ones and then delete them off my drive. But I'm finding all fonts I remove from Font Book after analyzing them to end up in the Trash. But I guess it's just a copy?
Very confusing all this. Shouldn't be.
    S

A previous discussion stated (I can't remember who):
A’s with boxes around them is always a sign of trouble with the main system font, Lucida Grande.
Quick possible fix is to remove ALL font cache files from the system to see if it's just bad cache data. For that, you need to use OnyX or other utility which will remove both system and user cache files. A Safe Mode boot won't work since it only removes cache data from the user account you do a safe
boot to.  If after that the problem returns, then Lucida Grande itself is damaged and needs to be replaced.
To clear all remaining font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window and hit the return key:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for you to enter your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly, then hit the return key.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
If that doesn't do the trick, then reinstall the OS.

  • HT2509 Font Book 3.0 in OSX 10.7.4

I installed some fonts and now have 1148 installed, many of which I wish to remove. However, Font Book 3.0 freezes on loading so I am unable to proceed. Your assistance is much appreciated. I am running OSX 10.7.4.

That's generally too many fonts for Font Book to handle. It's intended to be a light use font manager for the average user.
That, and the fact that it hung again while building a new database is a very sure sign that at least one of the fonts is damaged badly enough to make FB croak. When that happens, its database is damaged again, and the only way to fix it is to start over with the instructions above.
Make a folder on your desktop and move all of the fonts out of your user account into that folder. Then repeat the above steps. With what should only be the fonts installed by the system on your hard drive left, Font Book should then finish loading successfully.
Are those all, or most of them, free fonts? If so, free fonts are the number one cause of headaches like this. They're free because that's all they're worth. Not that there aren't some well built free fonts out there, but they are in the serious minority.
Figuring out which of those you have are junk involves adding a block of them at a time to Font Book and seeing if it dies. If it does, you know at least one font in that last group is no good.
You could also purchase a better font manager and ditch Font Book. I recommend either Suitcase Fusion 4, or FontExplorer X Pro. Both have built in font checking and will flag bad ones. I know Font Book does too, but it's not nearly as good. With SF4 or FEX Pro, you can check the fonts before adding or activating them.

  • Remote fonts loaded in font book.

Somehow somebody loaded fonts over the network on my workstation.
When launching font book I get a spinning pinwheel and messages saying connection could not be found... for each font it is trying to activate.
The machine that has the font on it is off/sleeping.
How do I identify which fonts reside on that remote machine and delete them WITHOUT jacking up all local fonts.

I don't know. I stripped everything out and reloaded all fonts-sets-library's.
NOW the machine that Fontbook is attempting to access is dead and font book is not responging.
Where are the font book libraries-preferences-plists so I can dispose of them and start fresh?

"Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
The report information is long and complex.
When I open the font menu in a word processing program or outliner (such as OmniOutlinerPro) I get:

I am not seriously held up by this non-functionality but it the fact that something doesn't work bothers me. I have seen nothing like this problem posted in discussions.
    Any suggestions for a remedy?

One of your FontCollections has become corrupt.
Find the following files and move them to the Desktop to disable them:
    /Users/~/Library/FontCollections/com.apple.Favorites.collection
    /Users/~/Library/FontCollections/com.apple.Recents.collection
Then see if you still have the problem. (You may need to re-launch the application you were having problems in).
Font Collection files are stored as (keyed) archives, and NSCoder chokes on them when it can't understand the data in them.

  • Font book enable and disable

    Hello,
I have about 1400 fonts in fontbook. Most of them are turned off, however one very large collection/library of fonts always shows up in the menu as activated (Pages, entourage, indesign), making for some very slow loading times and unnecessarily lengthy menus. Furthermore, my basic system Times doesn't show up in InDesign (though fontbook says it's enabled, and it's in the system menu, so it should be always on).
I went through a series of "fixes" about a week ago, but now it's all back (the resurgent problem corresponded with an Apple software update, but that might be a coincidence).
I have read the Kurt Lang article (font mgmt in osx), and I've tried the steps in "undoing font book." all to no avail.
I could buy a font manager besides font book, but I teach in a computer lab that only has fontbook, so I'd like to keep a parallel system if possible (but that's looking less possible at the moment--I hate to think how many hours I've wasted on this so far)
FYI, I have no fonts in home:library:fonts. I have 38 fonts in user:library:fonts. I haven't touched the system fonts. All others fonts are in separate folders accessed by fontbook.
    I'm using OS 10.5.8
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Ken

    Not exactly.
When the fb database is cleared it wipes out the libraries, but keeps the collections.
The collections of course are empty, because none of the fonts are added to fontbook yet.
When I go back and add all the fonts in, the collections populate themselves, just as they were before the fb database was trashed.
I haven't tried rebooting in safe mode; I'll try that. And I'll try ONYX (though I think it does the same thing as fontdoctor's cache resetting).
I did all this last week (trash the fb, re-add the fonts, and so forth), and it worked fine for a week, and then suddenly it didn't (as I say, coincidentally (probably) right after the apple software update)
I'm frankly a little skeptical of Fontbook at the moment. But I'll give it a go. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if it works.

  • Safari slow to load pages

I have a new 20" i-mac (does not have the intel duo processor). When I first took it out of the box and got DSL, it was lightening fast. Now, my DSL service is as slow as dial up. I have contacted the cable company, and they came out and replaced the line, but the tech said that I needed to figure out what was wrong with Safari, as it was having trouble loading pages that had compressed graphics. He suggested that I take it to a store to get Safari fixed. Any idea what might be wrong with Safari (if anything) and has anyone else had this problem?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4)   NOT the Intel Duo Processor
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4)   NOT the Intel Duo Processor

    socceraj --
Try these basics and report back, OK?
There's more we can suggest, but IMHO, these are where to start.
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
    3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.
Suggestion: Every once in a while, I shut down my Mac and unplug everything --- my Mac, the modem and the router. Wait a couple minutes, plug in the modem/router, and when the lights stabilize, turn the Mac back on. This is really simple, and often works wonders.
    Questions:
Do you have internet apps SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes non-apple internet apps need updating or uninstalling, and will interfere with the fast browsing that is usual for Safari. If you do, let us know which ones and which version, please.
    Hope this helps

  • Font Book 'Remove Checked' Hangs

Every time i select multiple fonts in font book and click remove checked, it just hangs. i left it for a day, and it's still hanging

I'm sure because you are using a MacPro, that space is not the problem.
If the fonts are turned off they will not load.
A hundred of so active fonts will not slow down (that you can tell) a program loading.
So speed is not the problem.
    Just cleaning up?
No need to use FontBook, do a safe start and go to your user folder/fonts and drag the fonts to the trash.
However, don't empty it just yet.
    Restart and see what gives.

  • Help - Font Book and font Library doesn't work

I've just updated to a new iMac on Yosemite, and Font Book doesn't work. Neither does putting fonts into the "Library"
There is a range of fonts that ARE working that are already in either place, but some (that worked up until two days ago in my old Mac running OS 10.6.8) just won't work.
If I select the fonts in Font Book, Font Book doesn't load them. If I put them in the Library, they don't appear for use in any application.
As a designer, updating fonts is essential, and if this can't be fixed I'm in serious trouble! So any advice welcome!

We see posts like this here all the time. A person upgrades to a new OS, and Font Book suddenly stops working. Usually, the problem is that Font Book's database has been trashed by the upgrade with the very common symptoms you're seeing. You suddenly can't add fonts, and fonts Font Book says are open don't appear in some, or any apps.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
If that alone doesn't do it (it should), then clear out all of the font cache data.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
