Font Book not working

Font book doesn't seem to correctly install fonts, when I do the usual double click and 'install' a font it doesn't appear in Font Book, it also doesn't move or duplicate the font into any of the usual Library folders. The font is available to applications but after restart it's gone again.
Anyone come across this?

Hi,
Locate this file: com.apple.fontbook.plist /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Try installing fonts now.

  • HT2509 Font Book not working correctly? or Text Edit not working correctly?

I downloaded a font onto Font Book and it works perfectly on Font Book and all the characters and symbols come up correctly, as they should. Then when I use it on Text Edit, it replaces the ', " and @ with a $ sign. What can I do to fix this, or is it unfixable? I'm using a Mac OS X 10.7.5 and I'm not sure what could be causing this situation.

It does that because that's the way the lazy person who created this font built it. Here's the layout of the font you're having trouble with:
Now compare it to the OS X supplied font Andale Mono:
Note on the third line, second from the right that Andale Mono has an @ symbol in the "at" position. The person who created the font you downloaded types a $ sign because that's what they put there, along with dozens of other glyph positions (must have really loved how they drew that $ sign). Which when you look where the quote and apostrophe are, they are also filled with the $ glyph.
The font is a piece of junk. Delete it.

  • In Pages 5.2, some fonts "not available", yet present in Font Book and working in other apps

Using Pages 5.2, I open a document created in a previous version, and I get error messages about certain fonts within a font family being "not available" in OS X.  However, these supposedly unavailable fonts are present in Font Book and work just fine in all other apps running on OS X.  In fact, I still have the older version of Pages on my system, and it still finds the fonts without issue.  The specific fonts troubling me at the moment are Myriad Pro Semibold It and Myriad Pro Cond.  Pages 5.2 replaces them with Helvetica.  I have wasted hours of time trying to resolve this problem, and I am at a total loss.  What can I do?

Like so many other thing is is probably gone. Why not use Pages 09 that has about 100 features more than Pages 5. If you haven't deleted it it should still be in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

  • Fonts do not work

Does anyone know why Fonts are not working???
International language fonts, remain in English and do not change to their appropriate format. Also a majority of the fonts do not change to their programmed format. The fonts will display appropriately in the Font Book, however they will not work in any program.
    I've tried many things:
    1. Validate all fonts
    2. Restart in Safe Boot and then restart the system, to clear the font cache
    3. Uninstalled all fonts, then reinstalled everyone in groups, specifically all fonts starting with an "A" then "B" and so on.
    4. Removed any duplicates (also done before the restart in Safe Boot)
    5. Install a brand new font from Adobe, which too did not work even though it specifically states that it will in OS X 10.6.
After the attempts to resolve the issue, fonts were NOT RECOGNIZED by the software. Fonts were ONLY RECOGNIZED by the Font Book.
Is there anything else that one can do?

Unfortunately, I cannot send out any fonts to anyone. Most are licensed fonts from Adobe, such as ArnoPro-LightDisplay, Adobe Hebrew, Chalkboard, Chalkduster, New Peninim MT, Kozuka Pro, and others including Kokonor, TW Cen MT, Al Bayan and Baghdad.
Chalkboard, Chalkduster, New Peninim MT, Kokonor, Al Bayan, and Baghdad are all installed by OS X itself, so I have them. Or have you installed other versions from somewhere? Have you checked for duplicates in Fontbook?
Kokonor is for Tibetan. Which input method are you using? Does Kailasa work?
Are you able to type Arabic in the default Geeza Pro? What happens if you try to switch some Geeza Pro text in TextEdit to Al Bayan?
Are you able to type Hebrew in the default Lucida Grande? What happens if you try to switch some Lucida Grande Hebrew text in TextEdit to New Peninim or Adobe Hebrew?
Chalkboard and Chalkduster are Latin fonts. Are you unable to make accented characters with them in TextEdit, for example é using the US layout and Option + e, then e?
Can you type Japanese OK using the default OS X Hiragino fonts? What happens if you try to switch text typed in that to Kozuka?

  • My fonts are not working correctly

    Hello guys,
I noticed today that most of my added fonts are not working. I use a lot of fonts that have a cyrillic subset which were working perfectly fine till 2 days ago. Now when I select a text field and try to change the font face to one of the added fonts, it changes the font face to whichever the default font is and renders the font selection menu to blank. I am really puzzled, the fonts are installed in the Fonts folder in Windows, and they were working perfectly fine till a couple of days ago. I havent installed any Fireworks or Windows updates in the meantime. I am working in Fireworks CS5.
    Cheers

I wasn't sure about my shut-down-and-restart suggestion, but I still think it might be a good idea to clear the font caches.  Here are a couple links on clearing font caches for Windows and Adobe apps:

You might want to supplement this with some research of your own, then give it a try.

  • Firefox 5 some web sites fonts are not work.

I try to visit this sinhala language web site using Firefox 5 latest version. Then that site not properly display (Fonts are not work). Then i again downloaded that web site fonts and install them. But again that web site not properly display.
If i visit that web site using "Google Chrome" or "IE" i can view that web site properly. This problem only happen for Firefox 5. Older version Firefox 4 work properly with this site.
This is that web site fonts download link -http://www.lankaenews.com/font/sinhala_tamil_fonts.zip

You can set the pref gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled to false on the about:config page to disable downloadable fonts and make Firefox use a locally installed font.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • NalandaTim Font is not working.

    NalandaTim Font is not working.
i want to convert microsoft document into InDesign Document with NalandaTim Font but when i am copying text into doc document and past into InDesign page, will get different output.
any one can help me on this issue.
    Example
    On NalandaTim Font
    from DOC i have write
    Alt+0187 Shift+a
from InDesign i have write same
    Alt+0187 Shift+a

Click the Text tool to make it active.
From the flyout menu in either the Control Panel or the Paragraph panel choose either World Ready Paragraph Composer or World Ready Single Line Composer (the paragraph composer looks at entire paragraphs to make composing decisions and is generally preferred). It should also be set in the Justification screen for any paragraph styles you define.

  • Embedfont = true; Japanese font is not working in Flash CC

    Hi,
embedfont = true; was working in Flash CS6 (window XP, 32bit, Air SDK 15.0)
But I moved same project to new system. Then, it's not working. (Flash CC, window 7 pro, 64bit, SDK 17.0).
textfield shows nothing. But if I remove this code (embedfont = true;). Textfield shows texts applied default fonts.
Funny part is English and Korean(My language) Embedfont is working perfectly.
Only japanese font is not working.
I've tried several japanese font, but all of them were not working.
    Any Idea would be appreciate.

Amy~ Yep the lasso tool was what I verified with another user. 'L' seems to be bound indefinitely to loop through different types of lasso tools and it was annoying them because they just wanted L to be the regular freehand lasso. I removed 'L' from being an option on the polygon lasso and even set it explicitly to SHIFT+L as well as set the lasso tool to a completely different keyboard combo. 'L' still cycled through lassos haha. It needs some fixes.
fertolg~ At least you have a workaround for now. I'd go nuts if I couldn't use keyboard text selection writing code, oy! You're welcome and if you're all set please mark correct so we can filter unanswered. Good luck!

  • Installed Mavericks and latest iWorks and some fonts will not work. Strangely these fonts work in Notes and old version of Strickies. Any ideas?

Installed Mavericks and latest updates for iWorks. Some fonts will not work on Pages or Keynote. Any ideas?

It appears overkilling to install Bootcamp and a complete Windows environment just for running a single, old-fashioned piece of software...
Old 32-bits Windows programs usually run fine with WINE, of which I warmly recommend the "PlayonMac" version (free).
    http://www.playonmac.com
    Just try with Playonmac...
If it does not work, try the other free WINE port for Mac, Winebottler:
    http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/
If even this does not work, there is a not-free WINE port named Crossover:
    http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover-mac/
It has a free trial mode, so you can test if it works with your scanner program before purchasing it...

  • Transferred CS4 to new MacBook Pro, now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. Help!

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro. I transferred my CS4 from my older MacBook Pro to my new computer, and although it seemed to be working fine now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. These fonts are installed on my new computer, can be found in InDesign CS4, and work fine within the program but will not appear in PDFs. The letters turn into rectangles. Does anyone know why, and how to fix that?
Help/input would be much appreciated. Thank you!
    Kristen.

you should properly install adobe products, not move, migrate or otherwise transfer them.

  • Font Book stopped working as it should

I recently upgraded hardware/software at the small newspaper I manage. We have 5 new Imac G5's running Leopard, CS3, MS office 2008 mainly. I have been testing fonts that we need for clients one at a time. If the font did not show up in the new collection I made for our paper, I removed it from my font folder in the user library on the hard drive and moved on to the next one.
I had about 40 fonts to install which worked on 4 out of 5 of the computers. The font book on the 5th computer (mine) stopped accepting fonts, yet the font would appear in the list of fonts when I would open InDesign. No idea why this machine would act any different than the other 4 machines. I did not do a thorough test to see if they would print & PDF fine without showing up in Font Book. I was hesitant to continue.
Most fonts were true type and worked/imported great in the other 4 machines. Anyone have any suggestions/Ideas? Thank you.

I'm not much help, unless you remove "com.apple.FontBook.plist" from your User/Preference folder, and restart. Even borrowing this file from one of the other computers might help, if all fonts are kept in parallel locations on the 5 machines.
As another suggestion, how would you like a free manager that let's you keep fonts where ever you like, and lets you load them as you like? It also has free on the fly plugins for Adobe applications, including InDesign, and Illustrator.
Linotype's FontExlorerX is a nice tool for font management.

  • Font book not disabling / deactivating fonts

Most of my fonts (1000+) are currently disabled in Font Book, but they still show up in the font menus in the applications I run (Photoshop, Adium, Omnigraffle, Mail.app, etc.).
Why don't my applications just reflect the list of fonts I have enabled in Font Book?
Possibly related: After I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, all of my fonts were enabled. I subsequently went into Font Book and disabled most of them (which is how I had things in Tiger).

I posted this below, but never had any replies or answers, I have since spoke to someone at the apple store who says:
I should not have them in my user/library/fonts, so now I only have them in HD/library/fonts.
My font book even after being cleared out still thinks and shows my old font history.
Last night my fonts were showing in Illustrator/PS/Indesign but now only shows a basic selection.
Was also told that I should not be running CS2 on my intel based MacBook Pro yet CS3 is not yet ready for Leopard.
I am just finding that my new MacBook Pro whilst fast and sexy seems to have moved away from the logic of old, maybe I am stuck in the past but my working day is greatly increase and eaten into due to clashing software and font problems.
    Hi,
I recently got a Mac Book Pro with Leopard and transferred all my Files etc across when doing this I copied my Fonts from my Old G4 to my Mac book Pro and it does not recognise them and will not load them into Font Book, it always says bad font detected or will not validate them!
Obviously this is either a major oversight by myself or apples they work fine on 0S9 and on OSX but not with Leopard, can anyone help as these fonts cost alot of money!
I have also now been to a friend who is still on 0S X and copied them from my OS 9 G4 to a CD then tried them on his machine and hey presto they worked, so I then got him to copy them to a CD thinking I would then be able to make the step up again, but no I still can not access my fonts, Im getting stressed now because I am wasting time and energy on forums and asking friends and trying things, I have a deadline for a Design/Website which relies on this Font and can not get the fonts to work, Macs are meant to be a designers best friend??? I m really having trouble finding the patience with Leopard and it seems things have not been thought out, any one else had this problem or Is the answer starring me in the face, go back to OS X ??? Please Help a slowly depreciating MAC fan !
    Thanks

  • Font Book not reading .pfm fonts

I have some .pfm PC Type 1 fonts I need to use but Font Book does not recognize them. Can they be converted to another format Font Book can read? Or do I have to repurchase the fonts?

    Kurt Lang wrote:
PC Type 1 PostScripts have never been able to be used on the Mac. Same is true trying to use a Mac Type 1 PS font on the PC. You have a few options.
    1) The Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), starting with the CS2 suite, can indeed read these fonts. Place them in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ folder and you will be able to use Windows Type 1 PostScript fonts with the Adobe programs. This is the ONLY place this will work. All other Mac applications won't have a clue what to do with the paired .pfb and .pfm files.
    2) Convert them. One of the nicest is TransType. The pro version is more, but don't bother with the light version since it can't save OpenType format. Unless back out to Mac Type 1 PS is fine for you.
    3) A free method is to install Font Forge. This is an open source project. I haven't tried it myself, but others here say it works well. It's a full font editor such as FontLab or Fontographer. I would imagine you could save fonts out as Mac Type 1 PostScript or OpenType, but I can't be sure.
The Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), starting with the CS2 suite, can indeed read these fonts. Place them in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/
Just want to clarify that with CS4 the directory path /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ does not exist and I am still looking for a solution.

  • Adobe Muse (2014.3) "Add Web Font" Function Not Working As Expected - Newly Added Fonts Become Unavailable Though Shown

    Hello.
This has also been posted in the Community: Adobe Muse Bugs forum.
I've been having some odd/irregular issues though they have now become fairly predictable in nature. The issue is in regards to Adobe Muse (2014.3) and the availability of web fonts provided through the applications "Add Web Fonts" feature. Once added they perform as expected but then become "unavailable." Full details below. I have been a Creative Cloud Complete subscriber for a number of years so am fairly familiar with the way in which the system works minus a few issues that have popped up now and then, this one included.
    System Info:
Adobe Creative Cloud (Full Subscription): Version 1.9.1.474
    Adobe Muse: Version 2014.3
    OS X Yosemite: 10.10.2
Here is a recap of what has been taking place. I'll detail the bug as best I can.
    1. Created new Adobe Muse project. Everything normal.
    2. Chose to add a new font through the "Add Web Fonts" function within Muse. A note, my Creative Cloud App is running/open at all times (in file synch mode).
    3. Chose new fonts using above. All seemed fine (see screenshots below).
    4. Fonts also were indicated as being "Synched" within Creative Cloud (screenshot below).
    5. As expected the two fonts were added to the list of available Web Fonts within Muse (first screenshot below - left). I added them successfully to my site. Well after a number of hours I went back to this same font selection menu within Muse and the fonts were still visible yet the sub-menu that one would expect showing various forms (i.e. Bold, Italic, etc) was not available. In a sense the font could not be chosen from the list even though the name is clearly visible (second screenshot below - right).
Have no idea what may have been wrong. Saved Muse project, closed and reopened - nothing changed. Created new project - fonts still "shown" in menu but can't be used. Did find a vague description using Google of similar problem (different application) which recommended closing Creative Cloud Desktop App and reopening as one possible solution. This DID WORK initially yet the problem, though corrected for a period of time (few hours at most), would reappear again where one would again see yet not be able to choose from the two Web Fonts. Went so far as to uninstalling the Creative Cloud Desktop application and reinstalling. Still have not solved the problem.
Any thoughts as to what this may be would be welcome. Restarting the CC app each and every time the fonts become unavailable is quite time consuming to my workflow.
    Thanks!

    Abhishek,
Thank you for the reply. Wanted to comment on a few things.
I reviewed the other post that you've referenced. Nothing unusual jumped out at me as something that I was not aware of. I'm running an older iMac that is in good working condition. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24" screen. I know this issue is fleeting, as I stated earlier typically can be corrected with a restart of the CC Desktop application (that I am always running at startup). I have not been able to determine that shutting down Muse corrects the issue. I would, at this time say it doesn't.
I did open InDesign and see if the fonts in question, Open Sans and Open Sans Condensed, were present and usable. They were. The fonts are shown as being synched in my CC Desktop app window (even if they are not "installed" in Muse). That is expected but it may be a bug in how Muse brings in a font from those that are already synched to your CC account. I don't know enough about how that works to comment.
And just to complicate matters, Muse seems to be working again, the fonts that is. I brought them back in and they are showing up in all locations (which there are actually three - see screen shots).
First is primary text menu dropdown (to right of orange "Text").
Second is if you click orange Text link. Another drop down menu appears.
And lastly, the Text Panel to right of screen.
I also wanted to add this extra bit of information, for what it is worth. When the issue arises and you do not get the sub-menu dropdown showing various styles of the font (italics, bold, etc.), one can use click on the missing font if you had used it previously and it is present in the "previously used font" list.
    Cheers!

  • Font Book "not compatible" with 10.9 after upgrade from 10.7

I upgraded from os x 10.7 to 10.9 on my iMac and now my font book won't open. I keep getting a message that says my version of font book is not compatible with 10.9. Is there a way to reinstall font book?

    No,
You should download and install the 10.9.4 combo update. OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
As with any system upgrade or update it is wise to backup first.
