Font Book problems installing fonts - serious issues

I'm having problems installing fonts that I've been using for years. The Mac Mini Font Book says that there is serious problems with a lot of my fonts.
I don't want to install fonts if it is going to cause problems with the computer but don't understand why they won't work on mini but were fine on the emac.

Try typing "fonts" into Google.  Have you really not done that?

  • Font Book Problem - Cannot see validated fonts in QuarkXpress

We are trying to view the fonts that we have loaded into the font book from QuarkXpress. We can see the fonts in Adobe Design Premium apps (Photoshop, Illistrator, etc.) but not in Quark 7.3.1. The fonts validate fine in the book. We have tried removing Quark and reinstalling it. We have tried booting into safe mode to clear out the font cache. We have done a permissions repair, verified permissions manually for user accounts on the new font folder that is created, and removed and readded the fonts under the user and the computer sections of the font book. The fonts are ITC Kabel fonts. They work fine on another Mac that we are running Leopard on as well, but they are not visible through QuarkXpress from a different user account on this same Mac with the problem. The only thing that I can think of is a system reload using the restore settings option to keep her settings? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Since we have reloaded Quark, I may try doing an install and archive on the OS. Maybe this will correct the problem?
Maybe, it depends on what's wrong with Quark. It could be that the OS is indeed damaged and preventing Quark from operating properly. But it still could be another instance of Kabel being active. You searched for Kabel by name, but that's not how fonts actually work.
Say you have a Word document on the desktop named "Budget report April 2008", but when you open it, the text is a grocery list. Fonts fall in that category. The name of a font you see on the desktop has nothing to do with the name that may show up in your programs. All fonts have an internal name. That's the one that gets reported to the system and is displayed in your applications.
A suitcase of TrueType fonts can have up to 999 fonts stuffed in it. There's no telling what you'll get in your font lists until you activate the suitcase. So it's entirely possible you have Kabel as a font that's named something else on the desktop, or you have a suitcase of fonts active that has a font declaring itself as Kabel in it.
Before going through an Archive and Install, create a new folder on the desktop. Move every font in the /Library/Fonts/ folder and the Fonts folder of your user account into the new folder. Use Font Finagler to clear the system's font cache files. Let the Mac restart.
Now move just the font named Kabel back to the folder it was originally in. If it now shows up in Quark, you had a font conflict with something else you moved out of the Fonts fodlers.

  • Problem installing fonts

I'm new to OSX so please be gentle with me.
Having used classic for many, many years, I've just bought a MacBook Pro running 10.4.7. It's taking some getting used to, and I'm having a major headache with fonts.
On Classic, to install new fonts I just dropped them in the system/fonts folder. Easy!. Now, I'm trying to shift two font families from my old G4 Powerbook to the new machine, and I cannot get them to load into fontbook. No matter what I do, they just refuse to appear on the new machine (or in any application running on it) and it's driving me crazy.
Can anybody tell me how in the **** to get this to work?
    Thanks,
    Adam

Hi, Adam. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "I'm trying to shift two font families from my old G4 Powerbook to the new machine, and I cannot get them to load into fontbook."If the fonts in question are bitmap fonts, then they won't work in Mac OS X.
Double-clicking a font should bring up a Preview window with an Install button. Clicking Install will install the font in either• your Home > Library > Fonts folder ("for me only"), or
    • the Macintosh HD > Library > Fonts folder ("for all users of this computer"), or
    • the System Folder > Fonts folder ("for Classic Mac OS")...which does not apply to your MacBook since it can't run Classic...depending on how you have set Font Book preferences, as indicated parenthetically above.
See also:• "Font Book 2.0 Help: Installing fonts."

I also recommend you read the Apple Technology Brief Fonts in Mac OS X (PDF) to familiarize yourself with both Font Book and Mac OS X font management. Many problems in using Font Book can be avoided by reading that document as well as the Font Book Help: in Font Book, select Help > Font Book Help.

  • Having Font Book problems since upgrading to Tiger.

Once I upgrade to Panther, I pitched Suitcase, and have been using Font Book exclusively for activating Fonts and such.
After upgrading to Tiger font book has basically rendered itself worthless for me. At least half of my old font wont load through font book. On alot of my type 1 fonts, if I drag them to Font Book, then the font will appear to be loaded and activated, but actually only the scren font was copied to the fonts folder (user/library/fonts). If I manually copy the fonts into this folder, then they sow up in my Adobe apps (CS2), but still print lo res.
For now I have ditched Font Book, and have been using Font Explorer X, and it works flawlessly, but I'd rather use Font Book if I can get it to behave, as I like the interface better.
In addition, I am also unable to load many PC TT fonts through Font Book Tiger, that I had no problem loading through FB in Panther.
Any Ideas, or is it just buggy?

Well, Font Book under Tiger is still buggy, but it's better than under Panther, and not buggy in the ways you describe, so there's something else going on.
Adobe apps will "load" a bitmapped font into their menus but then tell you, if you select them, that the printer file is missing and printing will be at lo-res, which is what you're describing. You say you "manually copy these fonts to the folder"; by "these fonts" are you referring to the printer files (which you said were not being copied to the Users fonts folder thru Font Book)?
The mystery is how Font Book is helping you install fonts which are apparently bitmap suitcases without copying the printer files along with it to the target folder.
So, a couple of things to check, choosing just one or two of the problem fonts to manipulate:
-When you "drag to Font Book" where are you dragging them? Depending on where you drop them, they could go to the default Install folder (set in Preferences), or someplace else. If you drag them to the Classic Mac OS library in Font Book, that could let you install bitmap-only suitcase fonts (without their PostScript companions). These will only show up in Classic apps and in Adobe apps, as described above.
-Might your suitcase files have both TrueType and bitmapped versions of a font inside? That might explain why only the suitcase file is being installed thru Font Book - it's just ignoring the bitmap.
In all, it still "feels" like a problem of bitmaps without their printer files... did you rename the printer files, by any chance? That will keep the OS from finding them at print time.
Did you clean everything up after ditching Suitcase? I don't know what artifacts you might be dealing with.
As for the PC TTs that worked before but not now... that's the real puzzler.
In both cases - your Type 1s and TTs, what happens when you put them right into the Fonts folder, bypassing Font Book.
Get back with more info, and we'll get back with more analysis...

  • Help: Every time I do something in Font Book, default browser fonts get messed up

Every time I change anything in Font Book (enable, disable fonts for example) all my international default fonts in FireFox and in Safari get so messed up, that it's hard to read sometimes. The default fonts suddenly become substituted by other fonts. I tried completely reinstalling the system fonts folder (fetched it from MAC OSX installation CD) but no result. I tried disabling all the custom fonts, and then enabling again the ones I need - didn't help.
Every time this happens, I need to  restart my Mac in Safe Mode, and restart again, so that it deletes it's font cache. Then all is Ok, until the next time I do anything in Font book.
This is really annoying, please help!
    Thanks

    I'd suspect maybe RAM then.

  • FONT BOOK 2.0.2  - Problems installing fonts

I am having problems loading fonts into Font Book 2.0.2 - I have been using Font Book 1.0.2 on two other macs and have had no problems loading any fonts. Using my new Mac (OS X 10.4.3) with the latest version of Font Book is proving to be very problematic as fonts such as INTERSTATE just will not load into the software.
Does Font Book 2.0.2 not work with some fonts that do work in previous versions of the software?...
Do you have to run OS Classic for some fonts to work in Font Book...?
Very fustrating..! - Thanks in advance to anybody for their help with this.

  • Font book or CS2 font problem?

I am using a mac Pro, running OS 10.4.11, w/ CS2. I am having a problem with either font book or CS2. Certain fonts are not viewing correctly when I use them in CS2 programs. I get a font error when I open the file, and when I try to fix the font by choosing the same name again, the font appears as another font entirely (in fact after I closed and reopened everything the font it substituted changed, and if I choose italic it changes fonts again). I do not know if the issue is with font book or CS2, but I have installed around 1500 fonts, and have had some other minor issues when I open files in Adobe programs, with fonts not showing up even though they are installed and enabled. I fix that problem by disabling the font and then re-enabling it and it then shows up in the font list.
So after all that, my question is what should I do? Should I reinstall CS2? Or is the problem more likely cause by font book?
    Thanks

  • How can I get Font Book to install new fonts with Lion OS X without crashing?

Font Book is unresponsive using Lion 10.7.1. When I click on Font Book icon in the dock, I get "Application not Responding". Can't install any new fonts. Anyone else having this issue?
I can get to the open Font Book window if I click on Mission Control to get there, but once there I see spinning wheel, which does not stop.
Any suggestions on how to get Font Book to work well on Lion?

Quick update... I removed all non System fonts from ~/Library/Fonts and deleted com.apple.fontbook.plist from ~/Library/Preferences.
Now FontBook doesn't crash when launched.
I think I'm going to use a 3rd party application to manage all non Apple/System fonts. Hopefully that will avoid any future problems.

  • Lion Font Book problem with Adobe FontFolio 11

I have a fresh install of Lion. My problem is with FontFolio 11. It installs well, finds duplicates etc. The problem happens only after i deactivate all of the fontfolio fonts. After they have all be deactivated, if I click on any other font collection, fontd jumps up to 99% CPU usage and Font Book not responding. After 5 minutes of this Font Book's Real Mem usage slowly starts to increase, sometimes up to 3 gigs. Eventually, I am able to click through collection with no delay, however, after a system restart or just a Font Book restart, the process starts over and i have to wait.
    I have tried:
Clearing every font cache file I can think of.
Using Font Finagler to clear font caches.
    Restarting in safe mode.
    Creating a new user.
Nothing has made this problem go away.
So, what exactly is happening? Why is Font Book fast and responsive with my 427 fontfolio fonts active, but when i deactivate them it slows to a crawl and goes through the same CPU/memory cycle every time? I have research and experimented for a solid week. I can't waste any more time on this. I'm this close to giving LION and Font Book the big thumbs down and buying something that actually works.
I never had a problem with snow leopard using Font Book and the same version font folio.

    Same here. My thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15995212#15995212
I've had no replies. Have you looked at Activity Monitor while this is happening? check it out. I think i'm just going to go back to Leopard, don't know what else to do. Do you have an SSD in there?

  • Font Book problem

When I find a font I think I'll use someday I save it as link source. I have been noticing when I install fonts, the Font Book install window tells me not installed (see attachment, bottom left)
I see it in the book,I even use it , no problem. But why is it, the install process does not recognize it is already installed, even after I just installed it.It reads not installed after a restart also, but it is there.

I download from web, to my download folder .(tried) to show pictures but I can not, anyway, the file is a .ttf file(most are). I double click it , it opens it gives me the option to install,I click install, FontBook comes up with it installed but if I open the .ttf file again it says not installed, but it is. It just seems that it should show I already have it installed, so it is not installed again. is that more clear.?I'm not so good with punctuation.

  • Corrupted fonts Gone from Font Book / problem remains

_I have spent all day paying for the recklessness of installing fonts willy-nilly , I have now learned of font valication, and dozens of new things but, after using advice from Dr.Smokes' eBook & other sources, I still get such pages as the Apple start-up full of upside-down looking junk !
Can anyone help my addled, swollen brain, & point me towards the next step, or where to find it
    ~~TIA~~ --=Dave t_

    Hi, Dave:
    1. You've not provided any of the useful details needed to help solve your problem. For example:1.1. What fonts did you install?
1.2. How and where did you install them?
1.3. What fonts have you since removed?
1.4. How, and from where, did you remove them? The people answering questions here are not clairvoyant. WIthout such details, there's little to nothing that can be done to help you.
    2. If I assume you installed them via Font Book, and did not change Font Book's default preferences for where fonts are installed, then:2.1. The fonts you installed are probably in your Home > Library > Fonts folder. If so, either trash them or create a new folder on your desktop and drag all the fonts in your Home > Library > Fonts folder to such. Assure your Home > Library > Fonts folder is empty.
2.2. Then, clear your font cache: see my "Undoing Font Book" FAQ or the "Reset Font Book" section in my book.
2.3. Also, clear your browser's cache. If you are using Safari, then press Command-Option-E.3. If none of the above helps, or if you may have trashed system-related fonts, then the next thing I would suggest is performing an Archive and Install of Mac OS X. See either the "Archive and Install" chapter in my book or my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
You know how to reach me if any of the above requires further clarification.
    Good luck!

  • I'm having problems installing fonts in MAC

I have downloaded a free font.. is a .ttf file.. i double click the file the
i click on INSTALL FONT (instalar tipo de letra) and then this windows appear
but the new font is not there... i have search the font in the folder [User]/library/font
and the new font is there when i double click appears the first windows again asking to install the font.
I have installed many fonts before and i had no problem.. i dont understand why now i cant install any font..
i think could be a problem with some permissions or something like that.
Does anybody knows how i can fix this?

    3lii
Yes, I ran into the same problem.  Mine is a fairly old (3 or 4 years) Mac Book, and I'm guessing that it came this way from the factory.  I don't think I have ever reformatted this hard drive.
And when I opened up Disk Utility, it was not immediately clear how to enable the journaling, as Im used to selecting the pick list, and that was not budging.
But under File there is a Enable Journaling option, and if you select the partition in Disk Utility, that option should become black and selectable.
If you do that, then Journaling will start.
    Hope that helps.

  • Font Book problems under 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5 and completing Software Update immediately to 10.5.5, I have noticed some quirks in Font Book. I did not use Font Book after the installation/upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.5 until 10.5.5 was operational.
    1) I have over 400 font families, but all but about 50 are normally inactivated. The new Font Book is slow as molasses to show any fonts the first time it is opened on a fresh boot. Former versions would start showing some of the fonts and add to the list as the files were read from the library by Font Book. Now it sits and sits until all have been read to display anything (close to 15 seconds). At least before one knew if it was working and not just showing a spinning beach ball. Doesn't seem a change for the better.
    2) Font Book used to show all fonts quickly once it had been opened under a current startup of system. Now there is a lag in the display (8-10 sec), but not nearly as bad as current initial openings, but longer than the previous system version.
This next point is REALLY annoying:
    3) When inactivating a duplicate of a font face (i.e. inactivating the TT version when want only the PS1), I can click on the style to be inactivated and before I can get down to click to inactivate BOTH styles become highlighted so I will deactivate/activate both if I don't watch what is happening. This happens virtually every time I do this procedure and never occurred in versions prior to 10.5.5. (Since I didn't use anything on the computer until I updated to 10.5.5, I don't know at what point of the 10.5 cycle this might have begun.)

I am in publishing and have a true postscript laser printer. Font are not just regular type, but phonetic, language and music fonts. Given a choice, I will take PS over TT anytime and I have a large investment in Adobe fonts..
Bad fonts aren't installed and I disable duplications when they occur with PS/TT/OT fonts.
I still make the point that I am using exactly the same fonts that were used with 10.4.11 - nothing added or deleted, the same ones active or inactive. Font Book did NOT behave this way until I upgraded to 10.5.5 from 10.4.11.
(For those that don't remember their history, TT was developed by Apple and adopted by Microslop because they couldn't conveniently deal with PS.)

  • Font Problems: Installed fonts are showing as un-installed in CS6 and are not avaliable to use.

    Hi,
Installed fonts in the Windows folder(which have been installed for agaes), are now not showing up in Illustrator CS6 since we have installed the suite. The font name shows in the box, but it has an astericks next to it. It is getting annoying not being able to use our regular fonts, as other people from different companies send us their artwork to change, and we can't display the fonts in the file, dispite them beiong "installed" into the system. We have tried re-installing them , and this ocassionaly works once, but when illustrator is re-installed or computer is re-started...they go back to being "unavaliable.
Please help! Is this a common bug in CS6? It is driving the whole team crazy!

Delete the system's font cache and any adbefnt.lst files you may find. Also make sure to run with sufficient user privileges.
