FONT BOOk user turned off, can't turn on

I am trying to install my fonts in font book for organizing. It says, users off. I have tried to turn the users on by enabling. I have also just tried dragging and dropping fonts into font book and nothing happens. Any ideas?

I'm not a big fan of font book. It makes you think that you have a good font manager when you don't.
If you have a lot of fonts then you should use a more professional font manager like Suitcase, Font Reserve, or Font Explorer(free from Linotype). If you don't have a lot of fonts then why use a manager?
This page will tell you how to manage a small library of fonts and keep yourself out of trouble.

As for the problems with Font Book, have you checked your preferences for it?

  • Font book crashes on launch, can't use MS Office

    Hi there,
I have a problem which started with MS office not opening. As soon as I tried to open a Word document, it would close saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. After a spot of googling I discovered that this might be a problem with a corrupted font, and sure enough fontbook wont open either!
When I try to open fontbook, it says that it has closed unexpectedly. Unfortunately, all this happened the day before I was due to hand in a 6,000 word project for my MSc which I could suddenly not access to print off... needless to say that after 4 years of trouble-free (ish) Mac ownership I was more than slightly hacked off.
Anyway I decided to create a new user account to test if the problem happened in there as well, and luckily everything was fine and I was able to print the document, but font book and Office still wont open in my regular user account.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance

Does Font Book still not open? If so, then you probably have some damaged fonts. Though it could also be an OS problem. But it's easier to start with the fonts, so try this.
At the bottom of my article, Font Management in OS X, you'll find instructions to reinstall all of the fonts that come with OS X.
Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
    ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
Go to the /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts/ folder. Copy all of the fonts in that folder to the /Library/Fonts/ folder, overwriting all of the existing fonts of the same name. The ones you want to replace may also be in your user account at ~/Library/Fonts/. You'll just have to look first.
If after that you still have problems, then it's more likely a problem with Office itself, or the OS.

  • Lost my Font Book 2.1 app - can I download or find on install DVD?

    Hi,
Due to an upgrade accident, I lost my Leopard Font Book (2.1) app. I've tried to find a new copy via download or on the Leopard install DVD, to no avail. Is it available anywhere?
    Thanks!

You should be able to extract it from your install disk using Pacifist. Once that's in place, run the COMBO updater to ensure you have the latest version.

  • Corrupt font book & spinning wheel of death means I can't access my desktop! HELP!!!

I hope someone can help as this is driving me CRAZY!!!
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on my mac and earlier installed some fonts to font book - which appears to have corrupted the font book. I am frozen out of my desktop. I can ONLY log in using safe boot to access my desktop. If I try my usual log in, all I get is the spinning wheel of death!!! Aargghhh!! It's proving a problem as I can't access any of my servers using the safe boot.
    Really hope someone can help!!
    Thanks,
    Lee

What BDAqua said. Get those crummy fonts you added off the drive. At least one of them must be so bad that's it's corrupting RAM every time the system tries to load it.
A Safe Mode boot removes the user cache files of the account you log into in Safe Mode, and clears Font Book's database. Normally, that would allow you to restart normally since Font Book's database is not rebuilt until you launch Font Book. That you can't even get that far means you have some really BAD fonts.
Boot into Safe Mode again. Make a new folder on the desktop and move all of the fonts you added out of the /Library/Fonts/ folded, or the Fonts folder of your user account. Whichever one you put them in.
Now you should be able to startup normally.

  • Font Book 2.1 can't be launched on Lion

I tried to launch Font Book, and I get an error message that says "You can't use this version of the application Font Book with this version of Mac OS X", You have version 2.1.
My machine came with Lion pre installed, and I then migrated the content of my older Leopard machine. Since then I have stayd up to date with Lion. Have not used FontBook for a while, but now I wanted to install some new fonts.
I have not found a way to update the Font Book application.
I can see this in the log:
    2012-31-10 9:52:47.395 PM com.apple.coreservices.uiagent: Oct 31 21:52:47 Henriks-MacBook-Pro.local CoreServicesUIAgent[31163] <Notice>: Application failed to launch (id = com.apple.FontBook, version = 2.1 reason = kLSIncompatibleApplicationVersionErr)
How can I upgrade, or repair ?
    Help !

You may have accidentally brought over Leopard versions of programs during the migration, overwriting the Lion versions. Unless you have another way of restoring the correct versions, you best bet would be to boot to the recovery partition and reinstall Lion.

  • HT2509 why can't I install Decker Font in Font Book. I have Lion

I have been trying to install the font Decker into my Font Book for a job I'm doing but it will not install. Has anyone else had this problem and has been able to solve this dilemma? If so, can you help me out?
    Thanks,
    Deb

From legit sites and I'm downloading it, unzipping it and putting it in my font book but my font book has 'problems' with this font and will not install any of the Decker.ttf fonts I've tried to install. I've gone to sites to buy the font too.
I also don't know why I have Font Book 198.4 when I have Mac OS X 7, I think I'm supposed to have Font Book 3. I can't seem to find out if that's the issue....
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

i seem to have deleted font book by mistake. how can i download this app back on? i can't find it on the mac website...

You can custom install the Font Book directly from disc #1 that came with your computer when it was purchased.  Follow the onscreen custom install instructions.
If you’d like to reinstall applications that aren’t offered in the Custom Install screen—applications in the Utilities folder or in the Bundled Software folder for example—you can use Pacifist - http://www.charlessoft.com/

  • Font Book: Installed postscript Fonts don't always appear in Font Book list

    Greetings,
I was helping a user the other day with Font Book. I was showing him how to add/enable fonts into Font Book when I noticed a problem I had never seen before. Before I get started, the fonts in question are from the Adobe 7 Font Folio library. There were newly installed by me from the original disk, and known not to be corrupt. I also know that that Postscript fonts are an accepted font format in Tiger.
That said, when adding.installing a particular font using Font Book, it would not "Appear" in the Font Book" list of fonts. I would attemp to, again add/enable the font (by selecting it from the Adobe Library) and still it would not appear in the Font Book list with the other installed fonts. This would happen to any font that I tried to install. Once this happenend to a specific font, I could no longer get that specific font to install.
I removed the Font Book .plist - no luck. I also rebooted - no luck.
Obviously, no application was able to recognize any of the fonts that would not install.
It was as if Font Book would not recognize any font that I was trying to add/enable.
Could this be a corrupted cache issue, or .plist problem? Could this be a permissions related issue? What did work finally was to add the font to the "Computer" set, where it would be avaialbe to all users. But I could not get the font to install into the "User" set. Weird.
Also, What is the significance of these four fonts:
    HelveLTMM
    Helvetica LT MM
    Times LT MM
    TimesLTMM
These fonts above are part of the default package that is loaded into the /System/Library/Fonts
Is it safe to replace these with Postscript version from my Adobe 7 Font Folio collection?
I have read most of the font related tutorials and articals.
    thanks,
    Hairfarm

    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

    where did
you get the information about pre-92 Adobe postscript
    fonts being uncompatible?
Oh, sure, it's hard enough for me to remember things these days and now you want me to remember where I learned them from?? geez... [gone lookin' ... okay, back] It was, as I vaguely recalled, on the Adobe site, re troubleshooting in OS X, in a list of "do this to solve your problems": "Make sure that you are using the latest version of the font... If the font's creation date is prior to 1992, a new version of the font may be available." The only Type 1's that have given me any problems were, all three of them, older than 92, and in troubleshooting something here a few weeks ago, that turned out to be a problem for someone else, too.
But all of the Tiger font
research that I have done suggests that Adobe
    Postscript fonts were acceptable.
Yes, well... Type 1's are supported. It seems that some older ones are a little funky (not in a design sense....)
Ideally, what fonts can be removed from Tiger from
the System/Libray/Fonts folder? I know that all four
of the MM's (Helvetica LTand Times LT), Lucida
Grande, Geneva, Keyboard, Last Resort, and Monoco
must stay, but what about the others?
You also need a real Helvetica - that is, not the MM version. You can replace the system's Helvetica with one of your own, but there must be an available Helvetica around at all times.
Then there's AquaKana (two of them, regular and bold). They're not on Apple's official "do not remove" list, but there's some anecdotal evidence of its being needed. It's "real" name begins with a period, so it doesn't appear in any menu, so it's not going to hurt anything if you leave it there.
In stripping down nonessential fonts, lots of people just remove everything from the Library/Fonts folder, but I think it's good to leave the basic most common web fonts available: Comic Sans, Georgia, Trebuchet, Verdana, Times New Roman. This keeps web pages looking the way they're supposed to - and they shouldn't conflict with anything that's being really designed!
This is assuming that the fonts
being used are not damaged and "Pass" Font Book's
    validation test.
The assumption within that assumption is false: Font Book's validation is pretty iffy. I think the only reason we don't see it as REALLY iffy is because fonts, on the whole, are pretty solid in OS X (your current experience to the contrary). I've installed fonts (properly) that flew through the automatic-on-install validation but failed when I used the Validate Font command afterwards. I've had fonts that pass both the on-install and specific after-install validation but get a Bad Font warning dialog when being re-enabled after a disabling. (And I didn't use the font in between... ) Who knew Font Book did any validating when you re-enable fonts??
This is what I would do:
    (Not necessarily in this order)
    1. Trash Font Book .plist
    2. Trash all Font Cache's from all three libraries
    (System, Computer, and User folders)
    3. Reboot
    4. Delete problem fonts from User and Computer
Libraries and reinstall using Font Book.
Please tell me if this strategy is ill-advised, and
what the better course of action might be.
None of it is ill-advised. I would add starting up in Safe Mode to see if the problems exist there as part of the narrow-down-the-problem stage. Same goes for setting up a separate user account and see how things are behaving there. (Yikes... did you try that yet??)
In addition, there are some special things to do when it's Office apps having the problem, or something going on with Adobe's application fonts folder...
Also, Zaph Dingbats is acting up as well. I removed
the .dfont version that was in the system folder, and
replaced it with the Adobe Font Folio Postscript
version (ITC Zaph Dingbats) that I loaded into Font
Book User/Library/Fonts folder. Now that I think
about it, that specific font has been around for
along time, and may very well be pre-1992. Hmmm...
Can you further define "acting up" ? In addition to the ZD dfont from the system, I've been using/testing ITC ZD from Adobe with no problems. It's version 2.0 with copyright dates of 1985 through 1987.
A lot to respond to. My apologies.
No problem. You caught me on a night when I'm too tired for real work but not so far gone I can't do this (tho I'm soon on my way, bleary-eyed, to get a fix of Sudoku puzzles).

  • Font Book

Recently installed fonts are not appearing in Font Book but they are listed and useable in all applications. How can I get them in Font Book so that they can be disabled? I should mention, I am not having problems with these fonts and Font Book on my PowerBook only on my iMac.

  • Type Lovers, is Font Book now fit for use?

When I installed 10.3 I was told Font Book wasn't a program written for graphic designers who use lots of fonts and keep them open often. So, I listened to the advice from some of the type gurus on these forums, got rid of lots of the fonts apple includes but I didn't need, etc., I bought Font Reserve and that has worked fine so far.
When I upgrade to Leopard, do I need to figure font management software into my budget ?
Any graphic designers out there with experience?...I mean I don't need thousands of fonts open at a time...but I do like to keep a healthy variety open and active...and what about programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign working with Font Book...do they play nice together?
    Thanks
    M

    Hi
Whomever told you this was talking nonsense. How well Font management applications perform depend to a large degree on the quality of the fonts you have. 1st and 2nd generation copies of your font library should work well with any font management application you may want to use, which includes Font Book. Certain applications can cope better with larger and more complex font lists than others. How much resources in terms of RAM, CPU/Bus Speeds as well as hard drive are all factors that need to be taken into account. For example I've successfully installed (using Font Book) nearly 1,800 fonts, however it took Quark about 30-40 minutes to load with all that information. On the other hand I've installed between 30-40 fonts (Using Suitcase this time) and it crashed Quark on launch. That's because one of the 30-40 fonts was damaged/corrupted.
Of all the font management systems that I have used the best one by far is Linotype FontExplorer X (as already mentioned)
    http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
The best thing about it apart from it being FREE is its ability to clear out system and application font caches, something other font management systems don't do.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • If I restore standard fonts in font book, will it delete the fonts that came with my Adobe Creative Suite program?

  • Can not enable fonts for User library in Font Book

    Hi all,
For some reason I can not enable the user library in the font book using the options in the font book. This means that the User Library is "off". I have tried the following but none of them have worked:
    * Reboot.
    * Delete the Font preferance file.
    * Undo the font book via booting in safe mode and then rebooting in normal mode. Delete the trash which contains the font cache.
    * Manually insert fonts into User>Library>Fonts and restart.
    * Manually empty user fonts folder and re-insert fonts back in.
    * Delete the user fonts folder and re-create it and insert all fonts back in
Have also tried a few combinations of the above but none of them have worked. I do not want to use the system library fonts folder as this machine is on a network and the users should not have admin rights to their machines.
I have also checked the user rights to the user fonts folder and all seems ok there.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem so that I can enable the User font library?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I have found that for me, on both a PowerMac G5 and an Intel iMac, both running 10.4.8 with all updates, turning on FileVault reliably causes the problem. I.E., if FontBook is working fine on an account which does not have FileVault turned on and I turn on FileVault, then the User collection in FontBook is greyed out and Enable "User" doesn't work. If FileVault is on, none of the suggested work-arounds that I have read about in these discussions or in Apple's support articles help.
Sometimes, turning off FileVault is sufficient. Other times, I must turn off FileVault and follow the work-around in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302551 . Sometimes, I must turn off FileVault, throw away the FontBook preferences and restart.

  • Mac book pro, Turns off and goes under protection especially with an External monitor on.

    Mac book pro,
Turns off and goes under protection, sometimes without any specific motivation, but most of the time when an External monitor is pluged-in.
I use it when I work with final cut pro, and this problem it's becoming huge and changing my workplans....
It can turns off also 10 times in two hours.
In many forums I read that the CPU temp could be the problem, but I've checked it and It's always around 62°-68°....
In some others they say that the new RAM could be the problem too.
Is anybody able to help me? (Underneath you can check the Panic Report and my mac informations)

my mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.pls help

Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?
My iMac's disk crashed also a couple of months ago and I'm still recovering. I have four Apple devices, two of them have failed. Can Apple afford such a ratio?

  • Mac Book Pro turns off

    Hello,
My Mac Book Pro turns off without reason. It hypernates. At first I thought it was the battery but It is not that. It says it has 2:30 left, but to turn it on I need to plug in the adapter. It does that for 2 days now.
    Thank you in advance,
    Chrystalla

The battery has an integrated microchip that acts as a "fuel gauge." Calibration resets this gauge, which allows the OS to better determine times to charge and discharge the battery. Calibration should be done approximately every two months. Failure to do so for a long period of time can result in the microchip "fuel gauge" in the battery losing the ability to accurately determine the remaining charge, and it will report that there is more charge in the battery than is actually present. As a result, the computer will not initiate Safe Sleep at the proper time, and instead undergo a hard shut down, one of the main causes of hard drive directory damage.
