Font book will not load

When I try to open font book I get the message that font book has quit unexpectedly and:
"Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
The report information is long and complex.
When I open the font menu in a word processing program or outliner (such as OmniOutlinerPro) I get:
"Alert
* -[NSKeyedUnarchiver initForReadingWithData:]: incomprehensible archive (0xffffff94, 0xffffffca, 0x1b, 0x38, 0x30, 0xffffffc3, 0x16, 0x1a)"
I am not seriously held up by this non-functionality but it the fact that something doesn't work bothers me. I have seen nothing like this problem posted in discussions.
Any suggestions for a remedy?

One of your FontCollections has become corrupt.
Find the following files and move them to the Desktop to disable them:
/Users/~/Library/FontCollections/com.apple.Favorites.collection
/Users/~/Library/FontCollections/com.apple.Recents.collection
Then see if you still have the problem. (You may need to re-launch the application you were having problems in).
Font Collection files are stored as (keyed) archives, and NSCoder chokes on them when it can't understand the data in them.
Hope this helps....

Either Font Book's database is damaged, or you have damaged fonts. If it's the later, having damaged fonts will always in turn damage the database.
Follow the steps in Undoing Font Book. Note that you will lose any font collections you have created. Doing this will also clear the system's font cache files.
If after that Font Book dies again, then you have damaged fonts. To replace all fonts that came with OS X without reinstalling the entire OS, follow the last section in my article, Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, to put all new copies of your fonts on the hard drive. Repeat the steps for Undoing Font Book.

  • Font Book Will Not Install New Fonts

I have purchased several new fonts that I need to use for an upcoming project. They are .ttf files. Whenever I try to install the fonts using Font Book, they do not install (no error messages or anything comes up) and it returns to the Font Book interface. I have restarted the app and restarted my macbook pro but I am still having the same problem. I've searched around but the only topics I could find regarding this were back in tiger. Any help?

Font Book is not a real font manager. It is not ready for prime time and may never be. I'd clear all settings from it and simply copy the fonts in question to your /Library/Fonts folder if you intend for them to be available to all users or to your <username>/Library/Fonts folder if you want only the user <username> to have access to them. That'll work.
If you feel that you must use a font manager, get a real font manager. Suitcase and Linotype's Font Explorer are real font managers.
I, personally, have more than a thousand fonts installed on my system and don't use a font manager. Especially I don't use Font Book. At best it's useless. At worst, it messes things up.

  • Fonts will not automatically enable in Font Book, fonts also will not load Adobe CS5 Indesign or Illustrator.

    Hello,
My fonts stopped enabling automatically in font book, and do not load in Adobe Indesign CS5 or Illustrator CS5 when I use these programs.
The font names are usually displayed in brackets such as [Times New Roman] in the drop down menu for fonts.
So far I've found two different libraries for font, but I'm not sure about deleting them for fear of losing my fonts.
Also where do I find the font cache? If I clear it, can I possibly get the fonts to enable themselves again.
I'm using a 2006 Macbook Pro, and running Snow Leopard (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
Thank you in advance for any help.

Thank you for your reply. I have a few comments of my own.
    (1) You, ~Bee, accused me of using "another person's wisdom here". In some quarters, this would be called plagiarism.
If I were Oscar Wilde, I'd say that bad manners were a far more grievous sin than plagiarism. But I'm not. Good manners is one thing, and I'll be the first to admit that my manners can stand a considerable degree of improvement. Plagiarism is something quite different, and I deeply resent being accused of such an action.

I see a Level 5 contributor doing precisely what I did. Yet, curiously enough, I see no guardian of good manners jumping up to chastise him for it. Am I to understand that this is a case of quod licet Jovi, non licet bovi? We're supposed to do what our betters say, not what our betters do? (Of course, I'm absolutely, positively sure that you, ~Bee, have never, ever, replied to a post simply with a link.)

Read Font Management in OS X, by Kurt Lang. The author is a frequent contributor to this forum.
And you must be very well aware of this, because you posted yourself in the latter thread, not once, but thrice.
Knowing this, I don't see how you could have had any reason to accuse me of "going to use another person's wisdom here".
Knowing this, you could have made the charitable assumption that I was, possibly, in a bit of a hurry when I replied with nothing but a link, and act accordingly. (That, incidentally, would have been considered good manners in my part of the world.)
Does that seem like too much trouble, ~Bee?

  • Font Book will not print multiple fonts

I am having an issue with Font Book.  I can print one font at a time but if I select multiple fonts (from a collection) it will not print, it just locks up and the print dialog box never opens.  Does anyone know why or is there another free application that will print fonts?

  • Font Book will not work at all

Hi, i have been trying to install some new fonts using Font Book, but every time i hit install button, the Font Book just fails, it is very frustrating.
So far i have to drag the fonts directly to the Fonts folder in the Library which i don't like doing.
I have no idea what could be wrong so im asking if anyone has any information about this or is experiencing the same problem.
    Thanks.

Thanks much for your solution, galvax. I can't say though I've ever heard of such a thing. Whether it's a different partition or drive shouldn't make any difference.
Just to be sure, I tested Font Book in both Leopard and Snow Leopard. I had no trouble opening fonts from any number of drives, both internal and external. So you may still want to consider reinstalling the OS. Without having to go quite that far back, reapplying the latest combo update also fixes many minor issues.

  • Mac book will not load past spinning circle

    O

    Hi Jacqui buker,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook Air is only starting up to a blank screen with a spinning circle (also called a spinning gear).
The best steps to start troubleshooting this behavior can be found in this link:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
I recommend going through these first three sections first:
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
    Perform a Safe Boot
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
    Best Regards,

  • Font Book does not recognize fonts in /library/fonts

I just did an erase and install. I chose to install extra fonts into the system and this wierd problem just started yesterday. Font Book will not recognize the fonts in the /library/fonts folder. Font book will not even install additional fonts in this state. I restarted the computer and that seemed to fix the problem. But now it's back again. I think it happened after I woke the computer from sleep mode, however the problem does not appear everytime I wake the computer up. I noted the following entries in the system log that seem to coincide with the problem after waking the system.
    (after the system is waked)
    Jan 2 15:41:35 (name) crashdump[991]: configd crashed
Jan 2 15:41:36 (name) crashdump[991]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/configd.crash.log

    Jan 2 15:41:38 (name) kernel[0]: SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: fw0 error=17
This is the console entry I get when I attempt to install a font from /library/fonts when the Font Book is "blinded".

Does anybody know what the problem is and how to fix it?

Well, I'm glad trashing the fonts cache fixed that problem. Font conflicts have been known to totally screw up things like MS Office. Whether or not it could screw up launchd, I don't know. But, if the problem doesn't resurface, then it definitely did.
However, I'd send a bug report on the launchd crash to Apple and include the crash report. Send bug reports and enhancement requests to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Go to <https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite> and join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Then, go to <https://bugreport.apple.com/>, click on the Login to the Apple BugReporter link (using your ADC username and password), and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering. If your item isn't fixed with a new update, you can fire a follow-up on your original, via e-mail.

The only Iceberg app I can find in the app store is a social networking app, not an e-reader. I don't see how you could buy books for it.
UPDATE: I see that it isn't available in the US app store. To contact the developer find it in your App Store and there will be a link to the developer's support site.

What model iPod and iOS version do yo have.
If you have iOS 4.2.1 or later on the iPod and there was version compatible with that version, then you should be able to get a compatible version by:
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

It did not have iTunes in the list, just mail and iCal alarm. Deadlines and emails are vital in my home office.
Now that I think about it, adding Mail to the list was the only thing that I had changed to the computer when this happened, but I can't imagine how that would alter permission to install on the OS.

Cleaning discs will load.  On a MBP that has never been cleaned, run the cleaning 2-3 times.  If you use the slot a lot, use the cleaning disc about every 3 months.
