font color=blue multiple applications in "open with" menu /font

I made a bootable backup last week with CCC.
The external drive kept turning on whenever I went into the "open with" menu. I ejected and unplugged it.
That was yesterday.
Today, there are multiple copies of every application in the "open with" menu.
How can I get the menu back to normal settings?
Thanks!

Go here:

And follow the instructions.
This should fix your machine but not your clone. I've never used CCC so I have no idea what might have caused that.

  • Duplications in "Open With" menu

Sometimes after I upgrade an application, the "Open with" menu item in the Finder lists this application twice. Curiously, it doesn't list the duplication in all accounts. Is there any way I can remove the duplicates?

Esaheiskanen, looking at the screenshot, I understand that it was removed properly.
You can simply go to >>>> Go> Utilites> Adobe Installer's and remove the CS6 App installed, Make sure you put a check on "Remove Prefrences" too.
Alternatively, you run the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, to remove the CS6 Version.

  • Same application showing multiple times (multiple versions?) in Open With menu

Hello, this has been bugging me for a while, and I hope someone has a clue as to why it is this way.
I know VLC is not Apple software, but my question is not about the player but the Open With menu/window.
As you can see in the photo, when I choose a file to Open With a series of applications, I get more "versions" of VLC I don't know why only VLC and not the others.
I have the 2.0.6 version if it can be of any help, and before my latest update I only had 3 in that menu, now I have 4 VLC's so to speak.
Even before that, before previous updates, I had 2 VLC's in the Open With menu.
It looks like with every update I get some sort of duplicate, in this menu...I don't know why and why only with VLC.
I do not have multiple copies of the program, nor multiple versions.
There is just one and that is the latest version, 'cause older ones get automatically replaced in the Applications folder once the new one is installed.
Why do I only see 1 VLC in the Applications folder, Launchpad, and anywhere else, but I see multiple ones in the Open With menu?
    Anyone have an idea?
Should I delete something somewhere maybe leftovers of previous versions or something?
I don't want a huge list, at some point.
    Thank you!

You need to rebuild your launch services database.
Open a terminal window (it's in utilities).
Copy and paste this line in terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    and hit return.
Then relaunch Finder (control-option-click the Finder icon in the dock).

  • Multiple items in "Open with..." Finder menu

Why I see Evernote.app item in my "Open with..." menu in the Finder multiple times? Any chance to remove it and keep it just once?
    Thanks.

For those who are interested I have an article on how to clean up the Open With menu here [http://idoitonamac.blogspot.com/2014/03/keeping-open-with-menu-clean-on-os-x.htm l] and I also have made an application to perform all the tasks discussed in the article.
The application (CoW) is available for download here [https://github.com/spaquet/CleanOpenWith/releases]
Hope this helps keeping a clean Open With menu

  • Contextual Open With Menu shows old non-existent Applications

Open With Menu: Shows multiple applications. It even shows versions of older applications that are no longer on my hard drive. And if I select these older version, those older applications launch! I've checked the About... menu selection on these older versions, and sure enough it says the older version. Example: I only have the latest version of Opera 9.24 on my drive, but 3 older versions, plus 4 of one of them show. I can click each one and they ALL launch with separate windows for each one.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305627
I followed the instructions to trash <com.apple.LaunchServices.plist> file and Restarted and the menu STILL lists all the applications. I then checked the Prefs folder again, and the <com.apple.LaunchServices.plist> hadn't even recreated itself yet.
    I'm totally stummped

I just realized that in my previous post I neglected to mention, that the problem has quickly returned. Sorry for any confusion.
Now after two tries, I notice that some .gif files have Preview icons others Photoshop. Some .gif files are listed to open with Preview, others with PS.
If I use Cmd + i on a wrong iconed file and scroll down to any other app, select it, let the icon change, then without doing anything else, scrolling back up to the default (Preview), the icon finally changes correctly. Change All is now available, but clicking it has no effect on any other files that have the PS icon. Some don't even change over from PS being the default app to Preview.
Same problem with .txt files. Some TextEdit, others Excel. So.. I am just changing them one by one, whenever I need to open one that is wrong.
At least the multiple apps in the Open With pulldown are gone
    I'd sure like to know:
    1) Why are my Library files corrupting and
    2) Why is Dr. Smoke's fix creating icon problems
    3) Out of the 1,000s of threads, I wonder what the possibility of the good Doctor ever finding this on and helping us/me find a total solution. Help us Dr. Smoke, we need youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

  • "open with" menu suddenly showing multiple copies of all apps - HELP!!

Recently, the "open with" menu that pops up when I right click a file on my desktop has started showing multiple copies of all applications, and it's getting WORSE! It started out a few weeks ago doing this with one extra copy of only one application, but now there many, many copies of all apps - different numbers of copies depending on the app.
This is somehow related to the fact that I have an external G-Drive USB connected, which I am using as my backup drive. I copied everything onto this drive using SuperDuper. When the G-drive is connected, I get the error message below  if I pick the "wrong" copy of an app. When I eject the G-Drive, I STILL see multiple apps, but get no error message, and any one of the app copies I select will open properly.
    IMac G5, PPC, OSX 10.4.11
    Thank you for any help!

I'm glad you found a solution, please mark your post with a green correct, so that others can see the solution as well.

  • Resetting launch services doesn't stop multiple apps in 'open with'

Well, I followed Dr. Smoke's advice on Resetting Launch Services but it made no difference. I still have the same multiple copies of a single application appearing in the Open With menu for a given document. What happens when what should work doesn't?

You could try Mark Douma's Applescript for using lsregister to rebuild the LaunchServices. I put a copy up here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/RebuildLaunchService.zip
It evidently REALLY rebuilds things, and requires a restart.

  • Remove applications from the "open with" menu

How do you remove applications from the "open with" context menu? I seem to have one instance of a program for every time it was "updated." So my "open with" menu has about 8 instances of Adobe Acrobat, 3 or 4 of Word, etc. It's obnoxious and cumbersom. Any idea how to edit this context menu? Thanks.

    hi joshua,
you can solve it in two ways:
1)open terminal and copy and paste:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
    Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister \
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    enter and wait the prompt
    2) delete this files and restart
    library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxx.csstore
(more than one files with the xxxx i mean number)
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist

  • Adding and deleting applications in Bridge "Open With" menu

How do you add or remove applications from the context sensitive open with menu in Bridge CS4?  Just to make sure everyone knows exactly which menu I am talking about, here is an example, right click a .bmp thumbnail image in bridge cs4, go to the "Open With" menu and select which application you want the image opened up in. I would like to add Photoshop cs4 to this menu and am unable to determine exactly how this is accomplished. Any and all help greatly associated.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Thanks in advance                                                                                                                                                                                                    Rick

Have you visited the preferences/file type associations and set the default for bmp to CS4?
If that does not fix it you will have to go into the OS and set that up as an option.

  • Open With Menu Lists Applications 5 times

So my open with menu seems to list applications more than once, for instance it reads
    audacity
    audacity

    quicktime

    quicktime
    real player
    real player
    real player....
I am installing leopard tomorrow (migration assistant install). Will that fix the problem? I would rather fix it before, how could I do that?

Look at this post to see how to fix it. Better to do it before applying an update.

  • Open with menu duplicates. osx 10.8.1

It shows duplicates of VLC in the open with menu when I go to open a movie file. I am running osx mountain lion 10.8.1. How do I remove duplicates or fix the open with menu?

If you are nervous about using Terminal forcommand  a you may understand,  not I concur with Bjorn. It is a means of resetting the menu.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onxy.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using the Terminal command set outlined in Bjorn's post..

  • Clean up Finder contextual "Open With" menu list

This is an annoying 'feature' of the Finder in OS X. As you install/upgrade applications the contextual menu "Open With" gets bloated with multiple programs including programs you've deleted, plus multiple versions of programs you've upgraded. For example for JPEGs I have three entries for ImageWell.
[One of the tips I found|http://the-fergusons.net/2007/05/01/clean-up-the-mac-os-x-contextual-open -with-menu> seaching doesn't work because the folder structure in 10.5.x is now different.
Also [this method|http://macapper.com/2007/10/08/tutorial-clear-the-finders-open-with-menu > of deleting plist file doesn't work properly.
    Anyone know how to:
    a) Clean up the list of shown apps fully
    b) Optionally restrict the list to applications shown to only those which you wish to have come up. For example don't show Apple Pages for .TXT files only TextEdit and TextMate.

You can adjust it to Leopard's structure using the 'locate lsregister' command in Terminal. This yielded...
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister
... on my system... I then appended the options as per the tip you linked and it worked...

  • Can you add Programs to Open With Menu

Is there a way to add programs to the Open With Menu.  For example, when you right click on a file you can choose to open it with the default application by selecting Open, or choose other programs to open it with by selecting Open With.  Only a few of the programs that can open the files are listed.  Is there a way to add programs that I use to list in that list.  Right now, everytime I want to open something in a program that is not listed I have to go to Other... and find it in the Application folder.  Which is not too convenient.  Many programs that I use to open files are not listed for many types of file types, I open them frequently using the Open... window, and I was hoping that Mac would learn to add them, but it did not.
For example, I have VMWare with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 in it, my default application for WORD documents is Word for Mac 2011, but occasionally I need to open it in Word 2010 in Windows (Certain features that are missing in Mac Word), and I have to browse to fin the Word 2010 Application from the Application Folder.  Another example is a program (from the App Store) called ResizeIt (which resizes photos), I have to browse for it everytime even though it is an application just for images.
So, is there a way to edit the Open With Menu for specific file types to include these programs that I use, or do I have to keep browsing to the Application folder and finding it there?
    Thank you in advance!!

  • Make x64 default with "open with" menu

Ive seen several threads to make x32 the default but not to many to make x64 the defualt. It appears that once the install is made I cannot only uninstall the 32 bit photoshop, only both at the same time. I have recently moved from cs4 to cs5. Everything was working perfectly until I decided that I had fully made the transition and uninstalled CS4. Now Im having trouble getting images to open with photoshop in x64 mode. .PSDs will open with the defualt x64 but I use a different viewer for .jepgs. I typicaly open these file types with the right click "open with" command. Unfortunately this command always opens the file in 32 bit mode. I have even tried to use "open with - choose default program" and navigate to the Photoshop X64 folder and select the 64 bit executable from there, but it still opens with 32 bit photoshop. All I want if to be able to use the "Open With" menu to open .jpegs in 64 bit mode. Any advice? Thanks.

Solved it using this guide only pointing to the x64 bit instead.
    http://forums.devshed.com/photoshop-help-88/file-association-opens-with-64-bit-photoshop-n ot-32t-724373.html
    Solved it!
In my desperation I just began searching the registry for "Photoshop.exe" - There it had the path for the "Photoshop" that you see when you try to change an association (picking the 32bit version using "open with" doesn't matter because it recognizes it as Photoshop and defaults back to whatever the program is in this registry key).
This should make Photoshop 32 bit open every time you open a Photoshop-associated file.
Here is what I did, for anyone coming from Google:
    Start > Run > regedit
    Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\edit\command
Changed the value to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
(old one was the 64 bit path and executable)
    Did the same with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command

  • GDM no more "open with" menu after last Gnome upgrade (3.16.0)

    Hi,
Using nautilus, I used to have an "open with" menu showing a list of alternative applications to open a file, such as in this picture:
    https://ubuntugenius.files.wordpress.co … .png?w=500
This was quite handy as I could use different applications to open the same type of file without changing the default association each time I use an alternative application.
Since I have updated my system, Gnome has been upgraded and now there is only an "open with another application" entry in the "right click menu", which, if I use it, change the default application for the type of the selected file.
The list of alternative applications is still the same as before, but the behaviour is now different, since these application do not appear directly in the menu any more, and since selecting any of them will change the default file-application association. For me, this is a bit annoying since I wants to use two different applications to open the same type of file.
I could not find anything on the internet related to this vanishing of the "open with" menu.
I am curious to know if anybody has the same problem as me. I wonder if it is a feature or if there is a problem somewhere?

That behavior of nautilus seems to be a new "feature". I really have no idea why they change such things.
At least, there's allready a bugreport for this:
