Font Compatibility

I recently noticed that documents created in Word on a PC would, when opened with my Macbook, revert to a different font. I think I previously had these fonts on my Macbook, but suddenly they're gone--is it possible that they disappeared, and is there any way I can download fonts to Office 2004 for my Macbook so that I won't always have to reformat each document when moving between computers? Thanks--

According to:
http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html
Quark 8.1.2 is Snow Leopard compatible.
8.1 has some issues:
http://forums.quark.com/t/21811.aspx
7 is not officially supported.
I'd contact Quark and check for forums regarding their software to find out if there are other tips.

  • Font compatibility with Office (for Mac and Windows)

    Hi,
Despite extensive searching, I'm struggling with a font compatibility issue between my Mac and my colleagues' PCs. The main points in order:
The fonts work correctly on both my Mac and other PCs.
The font in question is HelveticaNeueLT Std, rolled up into which are several different weights. The files are OTF files. The same files install without any problems on all the computers in question (and show up in Font Book). And the font can be used successfully:
    - in Keynote, I select Helvetica Neue LT Std, and underneath choose whichever weight I want
    - on PCs, the font and weight can be selected from the drop-down list in MS Office.
    - in Office for Mac 2016 (Preview), I cannot select the font from the drop-down list, but can hit Cmd+T, and then select the appropriate font and weight under 'Latin text font'. What is odd is that in the dropdown list, only a particular weight/typeface is shown:
As this is a preview version, I wouldn't expect Office to work perfectly just yet...
When a file is created on a PC, it works fine on my Mac.
Every file I have attempted to open that was created on a PC, and using these fonts, works fine. The fonts display correctly (i.e. including the correct weights), and I can work with the document without any problems. The only odd bit: sometimes in the dropdown box on my Mac it then says (null):
Whereas at other times, the font name shows correctly:
Both of those examples were created using the 'Thin' weight of HelveticaNeueLt Std. I can't see any pattern as to what causes this inconstency.
The problem is that what I create on my Mac shows incorrectly on a PC.
If I create anything using Office 2016 or Keynote, selecting the preferred weight as described above, it shows just fine on my Mac. But when I send the PPTX file to a PC, all weights look identical (it looks as though the PC has just displayed everything in a standard weight). This is the problem I am trying to solve.
To try to get around this, I tried the process of removing the Helvetica/Helvetica Neue .dfont files that come with the Mac - but this didn't work and caused several other problems. Besides, the font I'm trying to get to use as intended has a different name.
All help would be greatly appreciated - my thanks in advance.
    John

Thanks Kappy and apologies if it is inappropriate - but just to clarify, my main question is whether fonts used in Keynote should be compatible with other software (in this case Office running on Windows). The Office for Mac Preview is a bit of a red herring but I thought it should be mentioned.
I tried to clarify my first post, but it didn't work. What I wanted to add was simply whether Keynote handles fonts in a way that other pieces of software struggle to read - despite the font itself working perfectly in both environments.

  • Win/Mac font compatibility

I posted this at the bottom of a thread I started a while back about font substitution, but I guess it was too far
down the heap to be noticeable. So here it is again.
I had problems with two fonts being substituted in a packaged file sent to a Mac user. I have realised that while most
of the fonts used in the document are OpenType, the two that were substituted were Type 1s. So I have bought OpenType
versions which I am hoping the Mac will be able to use and so not cause the substitution problem.
But if I am right about the cause of the problem and my solution, I can't square that with my use of Dingbats in the
file, my Dingbats being a Type 1 but no substition having taken place on the Mac.
Is it possible that when the file was opened on the Mac there was some sort of automatic substitution for a Mac version
    of Dingbats?
    k

I have run tests that further complicate the issue.
I packaged a file and got the Mac user to make a PDF.
The original Type 1 Helvetica Bold, that had been substituted when a file using it was opened before, is now rendering
correctly. The new OpenType Helvetica Bold is being replaced.
When I look at the properties of the PDF, what I am assuming is the OpenType Helvetica shows as a TrueType font, while
other OpenType fonts specifically MyriadPro are described as Type 1.
Two versions of Garamond were included a Type 1 and an OpenType to check compatibility and as expected the Type 1
version was substituted while the OpenType version rendered correctly. But in the fonts list for the PDF, only one
Garamond is listed, described as a Type 1.
I made the test file on CS3, but I see the Mac user has made the PDF on CS4.
    Any clues?

  • Pages 5.2 Mac and iPad font compatibility

    Hello to everyone,
i need to prepare a Pages document with my MacBook that needs to be transfered to iPad / iPhone device with the last Pages App.
My aim is to have the same fonts for the different Pages Apps ( MacBook -> iOs ). As i'm a designer my MacBook is full of system / otf / ps / ttf fonts and it is difficult to find what are specifically the Pages ones...
    Please help me.
Btw i have another problem dealing with typing dots ..... in general when i'm doing three dots the code is changing, my aim is to avoid this automatic type settings and i think it is propre to os x settings...

The Mavericks installation places iWork fonts into /Library/Application Support/Apple/Fonts/iWork. The following article from Apple lists the fonts installed with Maverick, but does not explicitly isolate this iWork location.

  • Font compatibility between Office 2003 (PC) and Office 2004 (Mac)

On my PC at work I created a Powerpoint presentation that uses two proprietary fonts, Imago and Minion. I found the .ttf files for them on the PC (Imagm__e.ttf, Imagmi_e.ttf, Imagw__e.ttf, Imagwi_e.ttf, Minii__e.ttf, Minir__e.ttf, Minisb_e.ttf, Minisbie.ttf) and imported them with FontBook into my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.8). When I open the presentation in Powerpoint 2004 on the Mac the original font information appears in the style picker when I highlight some text, but Powerpoint has evidently substituted another font for it on the screen, because some text wraps that should not. Furthermore, it is not possible to choose font style Imago or Minion, as originally on the PC, only some variants thereof, e.g., Minion Semi-Bold. So, apparently, Powerpoint fails to recognize these individual files as two font families. When I use a Mac application like TextEdit, I can work with Imago and Minion as I would expect: simply choose the style, then apply bold, italics, etc.
Has anybody experienced this problem, and does anybody have a solution?

You may want to post in Microsoft's own forums for the Mac version of PowerPoint:

  • Upgrade from CS3 to CS6 font compatibility issues...

i recently upgraded from cs3 to cs6. my old true type font library does not show up in the new software. question: what type format must i buy to be compatible with the cs6 master collection?

Okay...it's a brand new computer (Dell XPS 8500) and I just bought one of the products before I realized that the CS3 wasn't compatible with Windows 7.  Do I delete the CS3 and reinstall the after-market product?  Or do I delete the after-market product and reinstall and it automatically finds CS6?
I've been trying to get this running for three days!  LOL  I'm ready to throw it out the window....
Thanks for your speedy reply and thanks in advance for any more light you can shed on my situation!

  • Font Compatibility between FCP and Adobe After Effects

    Hello.
I've got an issue with my fonts...
    I've got 4 places where I can put them (Library/Fonts ; System/Library/Fonts ; Users/Library/Fonts ; Network/Library/Fonts (a network Library I made working with a SAN)).
    I've got at least 4 kind of fonts (DFONT:Datafork TrueType font ; FFIL:Font Suitcase ; OTF:OpenType font ; TTF:Windows TrueType font).
I'm working with networked home directories.
My question is : What I have got to use for my fonts been recognised In both Final Cut Pro and After Effects (Adobe software in general).
With all of my 4 folders I've got about 100 fonts. In FCP an AFX I can see about 35 fonts and only 27 in common. This 27 are in differents folder and are different type.
    I'm getting mad.
    Help me

Of course I should, but the shared Library is made for "I put a font in one place and it can be used by anyone of my network".
It doesn't matter, I found the answer myself. The TTF one works, but the name isn't the same : In Apple world, the font got the font's file's name, in Adobe's world, the font got the font's family's name + font's style (like bold) (and both can't be change...)
    Thx
    Bye

  • Mac Pro fonts compatability

I'm having trouble with a New Mac pro running the intel chipset.
I am running OSX 10.4.8 on the new and my old mac.
I have tried to use some fonts from my G5 on the Mac pro and it doesn't recognise them.
The icon image on my G5 shows a 'LWFN' (postscript type1 outline font) but appears urecognidsed on the mac pro.
Can anyone expain whats going on PLEASE!!!
    Thanks

The icon image on my G5 shows a 'LWFN' (postscript
type1 outline font) but appears urecognidsed on the
    mac pro.
These fonts require two files and you have only moved one of them. The other file icon should have FFIL on it. Both must be in the same folder or they cannot be used.

  • Reader X : Wrong Fonts (was working with Reader\Pro 9 and Pro 10)

    Hi all,
First : this form pdf work with adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat Pro 9\X
i did a pdf form with scribus, i embed 2 fonts : 3of9barcode and freemono bold fonts.
    (compatibility PDF 1.5 (acrobat 6) )
My client update to Reader X and the problem is that the fonts are 'squares' and the barcode is text not barcode.
When i do look at the properties in reader X, it founds the embedded fonts. There is no error when opening it.
no console errors or Reader error.
If i open the document with Pro X , there is no problem, the fonts are good. i try to save a copy, an optimized copy, or a copy with limited rights,
but the result is the same, when i open the pdf with Reader X the fonts are bad.
i tried ton install the fonts on Windows but it does not help...
Do you have any clue ???

I have exactly the same problem!!!
I create and layout my forms in scribus and adjust them in Adobe 9 Pro. Setting the tab order and having the possibility to make fillable forms saveable are gorgeous. However, people who use ReaderX cannot work with these very forms anymore because there appears only squiggly squary rubbish in the fillable form fields instead of nice and clean Times Now Roman font. In Reader 9 everything worked fine. I cannot force everybody to go back to version 9, in order to be able to work wth the forms.
    It's so annoying, please help.

  • Loading MT Extra font from MS Office 2008 dmg

Hi all. I recently installed MS Office 2008 for Mac, but chose not to install the fonts because I did not want to corrupt my iMac. I do, however, need one of the fonts that MS Office has, namely the MT Extra font (for Equation Editor). Does anyone know how to safely install it from the MS Office dmg? Thanks.

This question is completely relevant. I fail to see how font compatibility between Windows and Mac OS X doesn't belong in this section.
OP, if you're worried about downloading fonts as part of the Office package, try downloading it separately either by searching from Google or using this link:
    http://www.searchfreefonts.com/free/mt-extra.htm
It's less likely to cause you problems. However, there are applications available should you want to check for corrupt fonts on your Mac.

  • PowerPoint 2011 Compatibility

I have been working on improving PowerPoint presentations for a friend of mine. I am neither a graphic designer or technologically advanced.
When she gives her presentations, she uses either Keynote on her iPad or a Windows laptop. Because I am at least familiar with font compatibility issues, I have been saving two copies of the .pptx; one in it's original format and one with .png images. I am running into issues of quality with the .png slides. I'm not sure if the problem is the file type, pixels, both, or something else. The current PPT revamp I am working on includes text animations. While I understand that PowerPoint Mac 2011 cannot embed fonts when saving, I need to be sure that the text shows up the way I designed it. I thought about saving each text box as an image and then replacing the text box with the saved image, but I feel like there should be an easier way to fix this problem.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

I suggest you post your question on the Microsoft Mac forums...http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac

  • Why is Helvetica font not available on Adobe Acrobat XI?

My friend has same program and has Helvetica-I am not able to edit the PDF because she has Helvetica and my version (Academic) does not have it.

Helvetica is a standard MAC font. The equivalent on a PC is Arial. I am not sure if you can change the font (compatibility issue), but if you try that you might be able to edit.

  • MC - PC Compatibility

Hello, I´m new to freehand and much of this.... Does
anyone know if I can create a Freehand file on a PC and later open
and edit the same file on a MAC? Thanks

    > Hello, I´m new to freehand and much of
this.... Does anyone know if I can create a Freehand file on a PC
and later open and edit the same file on a MAC? Thanks
If you have the same version (or later) in Mac it should be
    no problem.
Font compatibility may be a problem since the naming is
different in Mac. On open FreeHand asks for missing fonts and they
can be replaced manually. If you do not have identical fonts in Mac
it is best to convert text into outlines. Save a backup copy with
    text as fonts first!
OpenType (otf) is the only PC/Mac compatible font format
meaning that same file work in both platforms. If you copy fonts
with FH document check the font license first.

  • Numbers (Mac OS and iOS)

I am a long time Windows/Office user who has moved to the Apple environment (Mac/iPhoneiPad) over the past couple of years.  I've also moved all of my family and have seen a lot of work colleagues make a similar moves, largely on the back of adoption of the iPhone I believe.  I'm loving it and am very impressed with the iWorks set of products. I do think they have  a little way to go in terms of depth of functionality compared to MS Office but I'm am very happy with the apps and prefer to sue them when I can.
My only real disappointment is the lack of complete integration with MS Office documents (mostly in the iOS versions but also on MAC OS).   I can live without all of the commends but I would like to be able to do a couple of key things to ensure easy integration between them largely because I still need to regularly share documents between Office and iWorks - mostly spreadsheets and presentations:
    1) It would really help to be able to set a default Office doc format in Numbers/Keynote that then automatically creates or saves docuemnts in that format.  I share a dozen or so docs a day with Office users.
    2) It would help if there was complete font compatibility between the two environments so that when I import an Office doc, it doesn't lose the original fonts and can be saved/exported back to that format without incompatibilities.
    3) It would be great if Numbers supported ALL of the Excel formulas correctly (again- especially the iOS version) so that formulas weren't stripped out of the spreadsheet when imported into Numbers.  After that, the formulas no longer work in Excel either making the document useless.
    4) It would help enormously if Numbers supported the sorting, filtering and column/row hiding functions of Excel so that consistent views can be maintained.
Overall, I love the Apple apps and would be very happy to move completely to them if these things could be addressed.  A wish list rather than a complaint and I know this is not the Apple "suggestions" forum.  Interested in other/supporting views though.

    Garij,
The place to begin when you wish to send feedback to Apple is here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Most of your points relate to collaboration with Windows Office users. I think it's always going to be better to use MS products or clones for serious collaboration with Windows users. You don't want the tool to get in the way of the work. Asking Apple to make their products carbon copies of MS products probably isn't going to have much effect if Apple wants to differentiate their products.

  • Acrobat 9.1 "thunking spooler" crash on Vista 64

I get the dreaded "32-bit thunking spooler" crash on certain MSWord 2003 documents on Vista Home Premium 64.  After much experimentation, I have determined that this crash happens when the MS Word "normal" style is set to a font that is listed as a printer (PS) font rather than an OpenType font.  Note that the printer font I'm trying to use is an Adobe font, so this isn't a third-party font compatibility problem. If I look at the log report under the Vista control panel it says the fault is in the pscript5.dll file. The version of the pscript5.dll file I have is dated 1/20/2008 and is in the C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 directory.
As a temporary workaround, I simply don't use the normal style.  Instead I start everything off as "body text".  But if I had a large library of existing documents this would be a killer.   If anyone has more information on this, including which version of the pscript5.dll is compatible with Acrobat (and where to get it), please let me know.
    --Rob

A thunking spooler error means that the translation from the 64bit to 32 bit print process isn't working. Here is a link to correct a thunking spooler error:

    Hopefully that helps!
