Font corruption in virtual consoles

Not sure where to put this, so it goes here.
I am currently a victim of font/screen corruption in the virtual consoles (probably not X, not sure, haven't installed a WM/DE yet). I am using a 1680x1050 resolution (8bit color) with the vesafb driver for the framebuffer (have installed proprietary nvidia drivers for X). This is my native resolution, and my attempt to get a decent console environment without KMS, which the proprietary nvidia drivers do not allow (or so I have read). This works fine, the problem arises when I choose a large font to compensate for the larger resolution.
Most fonts above 16px seem to cause corruption. I really like the Terminus font (ter-120b in particular), but it causes corruption. If I go down to ter-116b, it works fine. For some reason, ter-132b works fine too, guess it's got something to do with 16px+16px=32px. This is too large, though, so I can't use it. I have also tried other fonts than Terminus (One called sun12x22 (or sth like that), for example) with the same results. All fonts greater than 16px seem to cause corruption (unless they are as large as 32px). Note that the ter-XXXn fonts (e.g. ter-120n) also cause corruption.
When I say "corruption" I mean pixels not being redrawn properly, "left-over" pixels. It is easily reproducible by typing something in the terminal, moving the cursor a few characters back (1 or more), and pressing the "delete" button to delete the character to the right of the cursor. The character is not properly deleted on screen, some of the pixels are left. Note that this happens in editors like nano/vim as well.
I have tried different resolutions and framebuffer settings (ywrap, redraw, mtrr and what not), but have narrowed it down to a font problem as corruption occurs even with default settings/resolution.
Any suggestions? Know what causes this? Workarounds/fixes?
In worst case I'll just down the resolution until a 16px font is okay, but it would be a shame not to get the native resolution.
EDIT: Oh, and my GPU is a nvidia GTX260 (the 216 core version)

I've seen corruption like this with a lot of cairo apps because the text to be rendered is sent to a buggy EXA driver. Does text look better if you turn off EXA acceleration?

  • How can I set the virtual console font?

I've just setup fonts in X, but now I want to use the Terminus font in the virtual consoles as well. I know I have to change my rc.conf CONSOLEFONT variable (which is set to nothing at the moment, just like CONSOLEMAP), but to what do I have to change it? There are like a million Terminus fonts in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ :

Heh.. you know why (tip: when you install a new kernel package, mkinitcpio is run)
Cool, thanks for the heads up. It says in the wiki pages that the keymap hook takes the CONSOLEFONT variable from /etc/rc.conf and enables it early on in userspace. Neat.

  • [SOLVED] Virtual console font setting is not being applied

TL;DR I want to have the ter-114b font (from the terminus-font package; its path is /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/ter-114b.psf.gz) as my console font.
    What have I done:
    % cat /etc/vconsole.conf
    KEYMAP=br-abnt2
    FONT=ter-114b
According to the wiki, this setting should be sufficient. However, there is something wrong, because whenever I reboot my computer, I get the default font instead (I can notice that by executing setfont ter-114b, then I see the difference).
    Further information:
    % systemctl status systemd-vconsole-setup
    ● systemd-vconsole-setup.service - Setup Virtual Console
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: active (exited) since Sa 2014-12-20 19:41:23 BRST; 12min ago
    Docs: man:systemd-vconsole-setup.service(8)
    man:vconsole.conf(5)
    Process: 193 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Main PID: 193 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    CGroup: /system.slice/systemd-vconsole-setup.service
The Wiki also mentions something about loading KMS earlier than vconsole, however I'm not sure if this refers to the part which talks about putting 'consolefont' as a mkinitcpio hook, or if this refers to the whole section. Anyways, even if I tried to follow this, the problem is the i915 hook (my notebook has an Intel graphics card) doesn't exist as a mkinitcpio module, as the wiki indicates. Or I don't have the necessary module file.
Any clues about what could be wrong here?
    Edit: typo

See? This hook doesn't exist in my system for some odd reason. Maybe some package is missing? I have xf86-video-intel.

Before is ok, can't remember when this problem show up.

Before is ok, can't remember when this problem show up.
Don't know where to go, please give me a hint.
You have to give us a hint.
    What is your processor?
    How much RAM have you?
What is your video card/ship set?
    What kernel are you running?
I spotted this in your dump:
[drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-2: switching from hotplug detection to polling
In this case, drm means Direct Rendering Management and has to do with your Video subsystem.  An interrupt is where the hardware sends a signal to the processor that something has happened that requires the urgent attention of the processor.  The kernel is protesting that the hardware is barraging it with interrupt requests.

  • Toggle layout in the virtual console

How can I set a keyboard shortcut to change a layout from one to another in the virtual console?

    1. Choose a keymap, which contains two desired layouts and specifies a shortcut to toggle them, from `/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/`;
    2. Open `/etc/vconsole.conf`;
    3. Set the `KEYMAP` directive equal to your choosen keymap;
    4. If one of the choosen layouts contains non-latin characters, it needs to set the corresponding font in the `FONT` directive. Fonts are choosen from `/usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/`.
    Example:
    # /etc/vconsole.conf
    KEYMAP=ruwin_alt_sh-UTF-8 # a keymap which supports typing latin and russian cyrillic characters;
    # it also allows to toggle layouts by pressing ALT-SHIFT
    FONT=UniCyr_8x16 # A font with cyrillic characters

  • Linux Virtual consoles -- default8x16.psfu

    Hello!
Has anybody accomplished to convert the default font for virtual consoles (default8x16.psfu) to pcf or ttf format? If so, I'd appreciate some tips about how to do so, or better yet, a download link to the converted font . There are some scripts and apps out there, but none of them really did the trick for me.
Most of you probably use 'dina' or 'terminus' for your terminals, but I really like the default font that comes with the kbd package and I reckon to be age-old. To my surprise, a readily available version for X was nowhere to be found. I know that the old default font for Konsole was very similar to the default8x16, and I use it currently in my XTerm, but XTerm screws up the rendering of bold charachters. I've tried to disable boldModes and whatnot in my .Xdefaults but to no avail. So, if somebody can alternatively help me with that, I'd appreciate it too.
    Thanks in advance!

Well... Botting from CD means that I must do a hard
reset at the machine. I don't thik that UFS is that
tolerant, but I have no experience on that.Metadata is written synchroneously on Solaris, so nothing
    should be lost here.
S10 has UFS logging enabled as the default, so on a reboot it
won't have to run fsck, either.
File contents could be lost, but that is limited to data changed in
the last 30 seconds before the reset.
Of cause reseting a machine is not recommended. But when
the machine is dead otherwise you don't have any other options
to recover from that state, anyway.
The sugestion of stopping X is a good one although I
don't know what happens exactly to the user logged
in. Is he kicked? If he is that's bad.Running X11 applications should detect a failure on their
connection to the X11 server and should terminate, too.
The user would be completely kicked out of the running
X11 session. But at least you don't have to reset the
standalone machine to get back control over it.
If this is an issue, you could run the X11 session against an
Xvnc server, and use a vncviewer client to display the vnc
session on your local desktop. The vncviewer can disconnect /
reconnect to the X11 session without terminating the vnc session.
That should survive a forced X11 server shutdown with
    Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

  • How can I get Firefox to load "Background" images in Windows 7(32 Bit)? They will not load in Windows 7 Professional but will load in XP Virtual console when I installed Firefox there. How do I get it to load properly in the normal Windows 7 window?

I installed Firefox on the XP virtual console on this machine and it worked fine, but not using Windows 7.
None of the posted suggestions for similar questions on this forum worked.

  • No dead keys in Xorg, strange dead keys in virtual consoles

Without touching my configs I'm having issues with the dead keys on my german keyboard:
In applications under Xorg they are simply inactive (as if choosing a nodeadkeys-layout). In virtual consoles there is no character displayed when I double-tap a dead key (e.g. '~'), but it is indeed displayed if I press some other key afterwards. Strange thing here is that it is not combined with the second one like in the deadkeys-layout (e.g. à for pressing ` and then 'a').
I do my Xorg layout via /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/25-evdev.conf:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Logitech Illuminated Keyboard"
    MatchProduct "Logitech Illuminated Keyboard"
    Driver "evdev"
    Option "XkbLayout" "de"
    Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
    EndSection
According to /var/log/Xorg.0.log the layout seems to be set correctly:
[ 39.725] (**) evdev: Logitech Logitech Illuminated Keyboard: Device: "/dev/input/event2"
    [ 39.725] (--) evdev: Logitech Logitech Illuminated Keyboard: Vendor 0x46d Product 0xc318

[ 39.725] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Logitech Logitech Illuminated Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD, id 10)
    [ 39.725] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"

    [ 39.725] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "de"
    [ 39.725] (**) Option "xkb_options" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
    I'm using an up-to-date pure-systemd install.
Any suggestions how to trace down the issue?

I’ve the same behavior as you in virtual console, and I really don’t know why.
For Xorg, check your .XCompose (recently I’ve a problem with a line only recognized by Xorg months later after I add it) or the Compose file of your locale in
    /usr/share/X11/locale/$your_locale.UTF-8/Compose
However it seems en_US.UTF-8/Compose is used for many western languages (at least that seems to be the case for french).

  • Slim, a problem with virtual consoles and a question about reboot

hi, just installed slim but now when I switch to the virtual consoles my session on X starts firing keyboard events on the consoles I have there, how can I fix that?
I'm using xmonad, my terminal is sakura and I'm starting slim from /etc/inittab and xmonad from ~/.xinitrc
also, it seems slim uses special usernames to halt and reboot however those ask me for the root password, is there a way to avoid that?
    thanks all.

this http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= … up_id=2663 might be related.  out of curiosity, why are you starting slim from /etc/inittab and not as a daemon in /etc/rc.conf?
Samus_ wrote:also, it seems slim uses special usernames to halt and reboot however those ask me for the root password, is there a way to avoid that?
the flippant answer is, "yes, fix slim."  but so as not to be a jerk, 'man slim' turns up this:
The 'halt' and 'reboot' commands need the root password, this may change in future releases.
so i was about to say, "no."  then i decided to hit google with 'slim "special usernames" password'.   unfortunately, your post here is the fourth result, so no love there.
    *but* there's this:
    http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= … up_id=2663
    and this:
    http://developer.berlios.de/patch/?func … up_id=2663
    and the abs.
so if you really want it, read the wiki page on the abs, add the patch to the pkgbuild, makepkg, and pacman -U.  if you don't want pacman to replace your patched version when there's an update, add slim to the IgnorePkg line in /etc/pacman.conf.  you'll have to re-makepkg and re-pacman -U whenever there's an update, but it ain't that hard.
if it works, i might like a copy of yr pkgbuild.  hth!

Perhaps "grep autologin -R /etc /usr/lib" would point you to something.
    -edit-
Maybe grep for "getty", as apparently "-a" is equivalent to "--autologin".
    -edit-
Okay. Remove "-a" in the file you pasted.
    -edit-
You could also remove the symlink and the file it points to and create there a symlink to the file coming with systemd, as your file differs somewhat from what I have.
    ls -l /etc/systemd/system/getty.target.wants/[email protected]

  • Can't switch virtual consoles with Ctrl-Alt-Fn [SOLVED]

Pretty much exactly what is says in the title. I recently reformatted this machine, and everything seems to be working relatively okay, but for some reason Ctr-Alt-Fn simply doesn't do anything. I can't access my other virtual consoles, it's rather frustrating, and I have no idea how to proceed.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Okay, I didn't realize that chvt is the program that I want to run, so that's super helpful.
When I first tried to run that I got some error about not being able to read in file, and so I ran it as root and it worked fine.
So I added myself to the tty group, and now I get this error: chvt: VT_ACTIVATE: Operation not permitted
Interestingly, I only get this when I run it from a terminal emulator in X11. When I run it while still in the console just after boot, chvt works fine. Now I'm rather stuck again...

  • Blank Virtual Consoles

I have a similar problem to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1245351 . Once I start X, my virtual consoles become invisible, though I can access them by typing blindly.
I have used systemd for a long time. When I boot my virtual console appears just fine. I get the usual booting messages. It switches to VT7 to run X, as I use lxdm.
My mouse freezes briefly now and again, which could be part of the problem.
I am running the nvidia driver for a GT630.
Either from lxdm, or from my running X session, switching to VT1-6 causes my monitor to go into sleep mode. If I type blindly, I can login. When I switch back to VT7, X reappears. When I reboot/shutdown, my terminals also don't reappear.
I tried setterm, xset, and also the xscreen saver. No settings will prevent the blanking, which seems more terminal mode/resolution related.
I tried sudo xset -dpms; xset s off and also turning off DPMS for xscreensaver (apparently separate need) via xscreensaver-demo (reloading the daemon). There was no luck with doing either or both of these at the same time. I looked through all of nvidia's settings in Xorg.conf and found "Option DPMS" for my Monitor 0, so I commented that out. No luck there, either. I also tried typing setterm commands blindly, to no avail.
Blindly typing fbset won't work either. It stubbornly stays in "1024x768-76". [Using a script to set and retrieve blindly.]
Things stopped working when I put arch on a new computer with a new monitor. I am using the nvidia driver:
    Section "Monitor"
    # HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "LG Electronics IPS235"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
    VertRefresh 56.0 - 61.0
    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device1"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "GeForce GT 630"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Screen 1
    EndSection

For informational purposes, I still have this issue, and I think it is KMS related. Apparently the nvidia propietary drivers use their own similar method, instead. My card also has issues with the nouveau driver and detecting KMS (X logs report nouveau complains there is no KMS). I also tried the very latest install media. This insists on loading nouveau, and I get blanking and powersaving unless I set the kernel parameter for nomodeset. So, even trying to boot in the FB console will cause blanking now. (It also happens at least back to 2013 install media, I have one I tried.)
(Of course, I don't do things like vga=xxx or anything that would turn KMS off with regards to any X or frame buffer problems.)
LATER: I just went to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/. I have a GK107 GeForce GT 630 OEM. This is a weird little OEM card nvidia created, and it doesn't fit on the matrix anywhere, amongst all the other 630's, being a Kepler. I believe the 630M Fermi is more common, and all the 630's except one are Fermi's. My Kepler version isn't there, it seems, though a GK208 is listed as the sole GT 630 Kepler.
So, it is likely that if you have a card like mine, you are out of luck running nouveau, and may even have blank screens on booting from the official install media. (Use nomodeset.)
(I do have built-in motherboard graphics. Disabling that doesn't help: ie. choose PCIe in the UEFI BIOS. But maybe there is an oddity there causing my problem.)

    Hello everyone,
since a long time, I've been experiencing slight font corruption in Gecko powered applications (Firefox/Thunderbird), that were going away when highlighting the culprit characters. Lately I've been getting it, except that it's worse, doesn't go away (I suspect the new GTK or kernel) and happened in Geany too.
Xorg logs don't have any errors and dmesg only show
    radeon 0000:01:00.0: Packet0 not allowed!
repeatidly. The issue doesn't seems to be a hardware problem since it only happens with specific applications. I tried switching from Glamor to EXA, without success and memtest86 says that my RAM is okay.
Using radeonSI with an AMD radeon R9 280X (7970).
    A picture of the problem.

    Thanks for your attention.

I would try disabling "damage" in xorg, e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-damage.conf, containing:
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "DAMAGE" "False"
    EndSection
