Font display compatibility

I am a writer, producing very long files in Word on Office 04 for Mac. In my preferred font, Palatino, if I send the file by e-mail to a Windows computer, the spacing and number of pages changes completely.
Does anyone know which are the 'safest' fonts to use and maintain the exact layout of the original? Or, even better, if there is any way to send my original documents and preserve all the spacing.

Hey,
> I have to write the email at a font size of about 90 to be able to see the text
That means everything is smaller on your screen now or is it only related to text that you write in Outlook?

  • Font Display Quality Bad After Update

    Hello all,
    my font display is really bad since upgrading to Tiger. I have Font Smoothing Style set to automatic and have tried light and others but everything appears over-sharpened. For example, as I type this, the font has an extereme sharpening, so much so that I see highlights on the top edges of characters. Regular Verdana appears in both Safari and Firefox as bold, and bold looks black. All in all, everything looks awful. I am using an Apple Cinemascreen. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

    I don't know FontExplorerX but check its compatibility with Tiger. You want to try disabling this font manager client?

  • Since I installed Helvetica Black, all fonts display in bold, but when I uninstall it, they're fine again.

    I've seen many other people having issues with all fonts displaying in bold with the latest Firefox update. For me, the update did nothing, but when I installed Helvetica Black to my computer, many fonts on the web show up in bold where they shouldn't.
    I have no problems with any of my other Helvetica weights being installed, just Black.
    As a graphic designer, I want to have the font, but I also want to see all the websites with the fonts they intended to use, rather than a default font. Is there any kind of add-on or fix I can use so that I can keep websites in their own fonts, AND have Helvetica Black installed?
    Other details:
    I have the latest Firefox.
    I'm on Windows 7.
    4 of my Helvetica weights are fine, the Black is not.

    Hi there - I'm having similar bold text issues with a customer's instance of Firefox 5.0.1 running on Windows 7, Home Premium, SP1 on a Lenovo laptop. There are two issues to be exact:
    # text that is supposed to be normal weight appears bold
    # some text has an incorrect amount of spacing (padding/margin) around it
    These symptoms appear only on this one machine and appears to be fine in Firefox 5.0.1 across at least 3 other machines running Win 7 as well as all other browsers (IE, Chrome, Safari) we've tested in across a variety of platforms.
    I've attached an image with a side-by-side comparison of the normal view next to the broken view as it appears on this specific machine.
    I've tried unchecking the hardware acceleration option and restarting Firefox - did not work.
    I've also tried running Firefox in Windows XP compatibility mode (as suggested here: http://www.groovypost.com/howto/how-to/repair-the-google-and-gmail-bold-font-issue/) - did not work.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

  • Poor font display in Acrobat X

    When I view many PDF files in Acrobat Pro X (10.1.9) in Windows 7, the font displays poorly:
    The same file appears fine in the Firefox viewer:
    Any idea how I can fix the issue?

    A couple of questions about the displays above.
    What are your Page Display preferences in Acrobat?
    Is the font in the PDF file embedded?
    What is the Firefox viewer?  Do you mean the JS file named PDF.js?
    Can you post a sample file that is displaying this behavior?

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) and HP LP3065 30" display compatibility issue

    Hello!
    Is there FIX / Workaround to Mac Pro (Early 2008) and HP LP3065 30" display compatibility issue ? ( +w/ ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT display adapter+ ). Its really annoying problem :-/.
    Main problem is when i start my Mac, my 30" HP screen dosen't wake up, it always on suspend mode. Sometimes it wakes up on the 3rd try orso, sometimes it ruins my motivation, ideas and i give up (talk about inspiration killer). If i connect PC Laptop to that screen, sreen wakes up straight away. ATI says display adapters "drivers" are included on the OSX install. Great. Weird thing is i didn't recognize this problem at all 6-8 months ago, so i thought my system is fine. So i can't return my HP screen anymore.
    My choices are to buy another 30" screen or buy different display adapter; there's two choices atm i think;
    *-ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCI-E for Mac Pro (~200€)*
    *-EVGA GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition 1GB (~500€)* (this one has seperate OSX drivers).
    _Can anyone confirm if those display adapters work with HP 3065 30" screen ?._

    Thanks for all information. I haven't been Mac user very long . I just want to get rid of my annoying problem. I'll do music composing mainly on my Mac Pro. So, it dosen't really matter what display card i'm using, i want to just make sure it works with HP 3065 .

  • Problem with the way fonts display in Internet Explorer

    Howdy. I built a site about a week ago (first crack at this). It has quite a bit of content but seemed to be fine on Safari, Netscape and Firefox. I checked it out at work on a PC with Internet Explorer 6 and there were typography problems. I intentionally used simple web fonts (all Arial) to hopefully minimize this sort of thing. I used a 70% tint of Black for the font color on all the fonts. On Explorer the fonts display fine on pages 1, 2, 3, and 4. On page 5 the type appears blurry, really greyed and spread. I can't figure out why (same fonts and styles).
    As an experiment I tried posting just a couple of pages with the type at 100% black. The really bad pages weren't so bad (but not nearly as good as on the other browsers.) The site is rballister.com. If you click on any of the links (picture boxes) on the "print & mail index" pages you will see the problem with the type. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

    Because I thought it would be a nice effect, I decided to use the slider in the color pallette and change to color of the type from 100% black to 70% black (which is to to say a shade of gray). I'm referring to text that I keyboarded into iWeb. As previously mentioned, the gray type worked just fine on most browsers but caused problems in Internet Explorer (in a seemingly random way. Still can't figure out the reason). When I changed the type to black on a white background (black and white), the problem wasn't as bad as it was in Explorer, but still not nearly as good as in the other browsers.

  • Poor Fonts Display in PDF

    I am trying to figure out if the font display problem I am having has something to do with Fusion 4 (v15.0.5) Acrobat (vCS5.5) or Mac OS X (v10.8.3). I am using an iMac 27 inch.
    When I view fonts in other applications (e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, TextEdit, MSWord, etc.) they look fine at any distance on screen. But when I generate a PDF, either from with the application or via Acrobat Distiller, they look poor on screen at reduced or 100% of size. Sort of jaggedy but not truly jagged. When I zoom in really close the fonts look fine. I am primarily using Open Type and Postscript fonts. But this happens with any fonts. They are embedded and it prints out just fine. When I view any PDF documents downloaded from the Internet, it is the same things. Just the screen display is bad.
    Any ideas how I can resolve this?

    Check what you have set for: Acrobat > Preferences > Page Display > Smooth Text

  • Appleworks 6/Font display problem in 10.6

    Has anyone else struggled with the Menu WYSIWYG Font display scrolling so painfully slowly since loading 10.6.2 ?
    It races as normal in 'names', but I need WYSIWYG when selecting .... now I may never see Zingbats again.
    Any suggestions ?
    (I'm also placing this in the Appleworks Forum)

    When AppleWorks behave slow or incorrectly there are some maintenance task to perform which usually does help.
    Delete Recent items which you find in yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items
    Delete com.apple.appleworks.plist found in yourname >Library>Preferences
    While in Preferences Find the folder AppleWorks and delete the Appleworks preferences
    Empty the trash and restart AW

  • Resolved: Font display in RH9 changed

    Recently while working in RH9, the font display in the topics changed to display differently than the selected font. When I generate, the topics display the appropriate font; however, when I reopen RoboHelp after a reboot, it still displays the odd font. It's like it is displaying MS Sans Serif versus the selected Verdana. Spacing is off as well. all this in the visual display is distracting and makes it difficult to format visually. I published and it seems OK once published as well. The font displays just fine; however, back to the robohelp files, looks weird.  Anyone else experience this and figure out how to fix?
    I continued reading down through the list of RoboHelp HTML discussions and found the solution in someone else's discussion "Problem with design view display." Adjust the Zoom. the zoom adjusted to 90% for some reason (possibly hit the wrong combination of keys while working) and when adjusted back to 100%, it resolved the problem.
    THANKS.

    Is the zoom setting perhaps not set to 100%? Can you post a screenshot of the RoboHelp window showing this behaviour?

    Willam

  • Chinese font display problem

    In the javascripts of this web site http://weiqi.sports.tom.com/php/zhuanti/zhuantinew.php?id=23
    ( follow any red link in this page, there will be a javascript popped up), some chinese characters can not be displayed in the right text box and no matter how many changes I make in the fontconfig.properties file about the Chinese font, there is no change of the chinese characters in these java script pages (in the right text box and on the lowerright buttons).
    I want to change all the chinese font displayed on the javascripts to the font "ar pl shanheisun uni", how to? Thanks.
    My system is Ubuntu 7.04, locale is zh_CN.UTF-8. Jre 1.6.0 or Jre 1.5.0.
    I used another Redhat 9.0 system(Jre 1.5.0_02), it can display these characters in the another chinese font. That system is not configured by myself. So I think there must be some way to change these fonts.
    Here is my fontconfig.properties file:

  • Safari 3.2.1 With 10.5.6 Update = Corrupt Font Display

    Since updating to 10.5.6, Safari is corrupting the display of certain small fonts, such as the "Compose" and "Preview" tab labels at the top of this Discussion "New Topic" window, and mail subjects in Yahoo web mail. The problem is more severe with small bold fonts. I have OS X's font smoothing turned off for font sizes smaller than 12 pt, and use the CRT smoothing style, as I prefer little to no font smoothing on my LCD monitor.
    I've reset Safari, corrected duplicate fonts, validated all fonts, run DiskWarrior, FontNuke to clear all font caches, and even reinstalled the 10.5.6 combo updater; nothing has helped. If I make the font one size smaller, the corruption is mostly corrected. OmniWeb 5.8 has the same issue as Safari under 10.5.6; FireFox 3.0.5 & Camino 1.6.6 are unaffected, and render fonts as well under 10.5.6 as they did under 10.5.5.
    I've booted my 10.5.5 backup to verify that Safari 3.2.1 and OmniWeb 5.8 had no font display issues before the 10.5.6 update. The 10.5.6 update was the only software change made on my system since the 10.5.5 backup I used for comparison.
    Anyone else seeing strange font display in Safari under 10.5.6? I think you'd have to minimize OS X font smoothing as described above for the problem to become visible. I'm out of possible solutions, other than hoping for a fix in 10.5.7.

    Well, for the time being, I'm just going keep 10.5.6, and use revised font smoothing settings: "Automatic" style, and "turned off" for font sizes 10 pt and smaller. The reason is that I did a little more investigating, and found that the distorted small font issue affects the entire system, including the Finder, not just Safari.
    I checked my G4 MDD that's running 10.4.11 on two 23" monitors (1920x1200), and it has the same issue as my G5 running 10.5.6, if font smoothing is turned off. So, this is apparently a long standing OS X issue that, for some reason, never affected my lower resolution G5 system driving a 20" monitor (1680x1050) until the 10.5.6 update was installed.

  • Foreign fonts display in character drop down menu

    When designing a sign for a customer, I take a photo of the existing signs, place on a new document in illustrator cs6, type text then scroll through the text character drop down menu to match the new sign text to the font that is currently on the customers signs, business card etc.
    There are many different types of fonts and I would prefer not to have the adobe system fonts, asian, arabic and other fonts that are not used for my purposes.
    Is there a way to remove them from this list.
    I have tried deleteing them from the window 7 font manager but they are essential system fonts and it displays a message that some programes will not work if I delete them.
    I have tried show/hide in the windows 7 font manager but this has no effect on the fonts displayed in illustrator.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    update...
    Seems windows 7 fonts can be set to show/hide for some programs but it does not work in illustrator. I have found a helpful program by Adobe Air called Font Picker which displays only the fonts installed and excludes hidden fonts (windows 7 font manager).
    It would be good to have a search facility that has fonts catagorised. There are a few out there where you can tag them but I don't see myself sitting through 35000+ fonts I have collected over the years.
    I did install Illustrator CC which has a few added options under the character font drop down menu. It also has a link to Typekit on Adobe Cloud but would you believe it didn't have Calligri which is a very common script font.
    Has anyone on this forum found a solution to this before. There are may questions related to this on the web but no answers or feed back.

  • Embedded fonts display differently in mx and spark

    Hi there,
    My apologies if this is an known issue but I have not been able to find any posts describing this problem. As the title of the discussion describes the problem I see is that when embedding the same font for spark and mx components they display differently to the point of making the application look sloppy. I created a small app to illustrate the problem:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application
        minWidth="955" minHeight="600"
        xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
        xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
        xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
        <fx:Declarations>
            <!-- Place non-visual elements (e.g., services, value objects) here -->
        </fx:Declarations>
        <fx:Style>
    @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
    @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx";
    @font-face
    src:url("arial.ttf");
    fontFamily: arialCFF;
    embedAsCFF: true;
    @font-face {
    src:url("arial.ttf");
    fontFamily: arialNoCFF;
    embedAsCFF: false;
    advancedAntiAliasing: false;
    s|Label
    fontFamily: arialCFF;
    fontSize: 20px;
    mx|Label
    fontFamily: arialNoCFF;
    fontSize: 20px;
    </fx:Style>
        <s:layout>
            <s:VerticalLayout
                paddingLeft="10"
                paddingTop="10"/>
        </s:layout>
        <s:Label text="This is a label that uses spark"/>
        <mx:Label text="This is a label that uses mx"/>
    </s:Application>
    I used the Arial.ttf font I found in my mac, though I have also tried with courier new and even the myriad web pro provided with an example in the SDK. Also I have tried with SDKs 4.1, 4.5 and 4.5.1. I have played with the value of advancedAniAliasing as well. Regardless of the combination I will still see differences such as this:
    Is this a known issue? Any solutions at hand?
    Thanks in advance for the help!!

    Hi there,
    Thanks for the quick reply. I was able to make fonts display correctly after hacking the display of some components (mx.controls.FormItem for example) however I did notice a whole buch of runtime warnings that showed up as a result of the workaround such as:
    warning: incompatible embedded font 'arialCFFFont' specified for mx.core::UITextFormat. This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=false.
    TextFieldAutomationHelper:captureSelection() - 'selectionBeginIndex' is not implemented in FTETextField.
    And in some cases for components I do not even use:
    warning: incompatible embedded font 'arialCFFFont' specified for mx.controls::TextInput (TextInput1967) . This component requires that the embedded font be declared with embedAsCFF=false.
    Any ideas on how to avoid this noise or do we have to live with this?

  • Font display issues

    Upgraded to Lion on an iMac, now I have strange font display issues across applications and in browsers and specifically with numbers, somethimes letters.

    Start with something relatively simple, like clearing the font cache files.
    Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    Terminal will then ask for you to enter your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
    This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

  • AI CS 4 & 5 font display is terrible

    This is NOT about font preview.
    I have been using AI for years. I am working on up to date Mac's and I currently have CS3 through CS5. Starting with CS4 and continuing with CS5 fonts display in crappy detail similar to old FH (the main reason I shunned FH years ago). Unless I zoom way in fonts have the appearance of wire and the finer details of font design does not display. I can switch views in the 'View' menu from preview to outline and see virtually no difference in font display. Even when zoomed way in the font appears rough and stair steppy. I have experimented with all screen resolution setting available to me with lower resolutions then my preferred 1920 x 1080 and fonts only display worse.
    I have searched and searched these forums and could find not one mention of this issue. Am I doing something wrong in my preferences? Is it a MAC thing? Has CS4/5 compromised font display after integrating FH? Or is this just the way it is and I am the only designer who cares about precision in typographical design?

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had hoped it would be something that simple. Finally, I have been so frustrated I tryed everything but that. Thank you.
