Font Hinting, Antialiasing, etc vs Desktop Environments

I wonder if any of the presets for font hinting, antialiasing and subpixel rendering apply to a desktop environment (like GNOME, KDE SC or Cinnamon). I've enabled all 3 of them and I just can't see a difference.
The only one that seem to make a difference (with Cinnamon at least) is LCD filtering.
The wiki page on Font Configuration does mention something about desktop environments but I'm not sure I understand. Cinnamon has its own configuration settings for font hinting, antialiasing and subpixel rendering (and from what I can remember GNOME too) but if memory serves when I installed the Infinality patches I clearly saw a difference with the font rendering afterwards, so why the Infinality patches work and not the more basic built-in stuff.
Thanks in advance...

I explored this some time ago and one issue I had was that I had to reset the font cache to see the changes.

  • Text-rendering and font-smoothing within the Adobe Muse application e.g. antialiased etc.

I'd love an option in the text panel where you can choose the rendering that you want the text to have when published. It's possible to do this using code and CSS after exporting but I'd like it to be possible within the Adobe Muse application, for both web fonts and built-in fonts e.g. Helvetica, Arial, Georgia etc. From what I know this isn't possible but if someone else knows how then I'd appreciate any help. Otherwise, it's a feature that I'd like to see in a future update.

    Abhishek,
Thank you for the reply. Wanted to comment on a few things.
I reviewed the other post that you've referenced. Nothing unusual jumped out at me as something that I was not aware of. I'm running an older iMac that is in good working condition. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24" screen. I know this issue is fleeting, as I stated earlier typically can be corrected with a restart of the CC Desktop application (that I am always running at startup). I have not been able to determine that shutting down Muse corrects the issue. I would, at this time say it doesn't.
I did open InDesign and see if the fonts in question, Open Sans and Open Sans Condensed, were present and usable. They were. The fonts are shown as being synched in my CC Desktop app window (even if they are not "installed" in Muse). That is expected but it may be a bug in how Muse brings in a font from those that are already synched to your CC account. I don't know enough about how that works to comment.
And just to complicate matters, Muse seems to be working again, the fonts that is. I brought them back in and they are showing up in all locations (which there are actually three - see screen shots).
First is primary text menu dropdown (to right of orange "Text").
Second is if you click orange Text link. Another drop down menu appears.
And lastly, the Text Panel to right of screen.
I also wanted to add this extra bit of information, for what it is worth. When the issue arises and you do not get the sub-menu dropdown showing various styles of the font (italics, bold, etc.), one can use click on the missing font if you had used it previously and it is present in the "previously used font" list.
    Cheers!

  • How to install the fonts that come standard in other environments

I am new to archlinux. I've used Fedora and Ubuntu before. I have a fresh install and it runs smooth. I like it a lot. There are a few things I need to work out. The thing I'd like to do at the moment is to get the fonts that other desktop environments use. Right now I am using LXDM+LXDE. I just want the standard fonts that I had before but I want to stick with LXDE. Things start look really ugly quickly in programs like skype. What is the best way to do this?

  • Testing Multiple Desktop Environments + Increasing Productivity

    Hello,
I've been using Arch Linux with Gnome for some time now and I'm interested in testing out other desktop environments.  Particularily Xfce and FluxBox.  I'm not really interested in KDE as from past experience I've found it rather bloated.  I do however like how you can run Quanta Plus on it (although I've heard this can be done via Gnome with the KDE files etc).
I recently used Ubuntu with Gnome and was impressed with its ability to have completely seperate work spaces (seperate icons, wallpapers, taskbar and processes).  I'm interested in methods of doing this and saving/restoring entire workspace sessions.  The idea is to have two completely seperate work spaces, one for personal use and the other for work.
Is it possible to have multiple DE's installed at the same time on Arch and ability to switch between them easily and also remove them if necessary?
Basically I'm interested in increasing productivity.
I'm interested in your thoughts on this.
    Thanks.

Well if you are developing applications that need testing on multiple Desktop enviroments, then yes installing them would help increasing your productivity.
But if your developed apps are platform independent, installing multiple DEs - in one way - is nothing but bloat and will get in the way because now you will have to rbr different shortcuts/application names for different DEs. That in my opinion leads to decreased productivity. Separate wallpapers on different virtual desktops and apps like those take up lot of memory and are a waste of resources, IMHO
If  however, you want to just try out different WMs/DEs to find the right one for you, then yes...as moljac mentioned install them and find out which ones you like.
and yes its easy to install and remove them.

  • Desktop environments

    Hi all
I'll admit that I don't know very much about desktop environments in any other OS than Windows (but hey, what's to know?). I use xfce and would like to know more about what these things I've been hearing about are. Window managers? Panel Systems? And other things like Openbox?
My plan is to eventually create a desktop environment where there are no taskbars, just windows, and when you right click the desktop the menu comes up. I would also like to be able to change the transparency of whichever windows and having some sort of alt+tab kind of thing where I can make windows disappear and recall/cycle them with a key combination. If I can do this with xfce, I would appreciate if someone pointed me in the right direction. Thanks!

Xs1t0ry wrote:Is openbox a DE or is it a program?
    * A DE provides icons, toolbars, applications, applets, and abilities like drag and drop.
        * A WM controls the placement and appearance of application windows under the X Window System but does NOT provide panels, applets, icons, etc.
Openbox is a window manager, not a full DE.
Here is a good explanation: http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/xwtf.html

  • [SOLVED] SLiM no longer able to switch desktop environments

So after the latest upgrade of slim (1.3.5 -> 1.3.6) I am no longer able to switch between desktop environments using F1. Now it just boots my default environment (dwm). I had it configured fine and it worked before this update. Is there a fix?

  • Custom report - Can't customize font / table width etc

So i'm authoring my first report - that works fine; however I can't seem to figure out how to customize the font / table width etc. I'm creating an RDL file from Report Server Project Wizard in Visual Studio and in there i'm changing font sizes and table
widths and I can see its changing in the RDL file's XML. I then plug the RDL file into my managment pack and import it. I run the report and the results always have this huge font and the table widths don't change. Anyone have any idea what i'm missing or
why that would be happening? heres the RDL file for reference:

I did some digging and found a link that might help you/have an answer.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14850503/change-default-font-ssrs-visual-studio
    https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/574003/modify-the-default-font-family-for-sql-server-business-intelligence-development-studio-while-creating-a-report#
If you click on work around someone posted that they were able to modify the default font in visual studio.
"If I am not mistaken, you can update your Report.rdl template file in visual studio
to use the default font you wish to use.
navigate to this location (where x is your visual studio version):
    C:-\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio x\Common7\ide\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\ReportProject
copy report.rdl to an already created report project.
Add the report to your report project
Update the default font where applicable.
Copy the updated report.rdl back to the location above and that is it.
The next time you open your project, you will be using the update rdl file as your
    template.
You can do this as many times as you want.

  • Importing Menus from other Desktop Environments

I'm on Openbox. I feel my GNOME menu is complete but I don't use GNOME. I want to know if there is away, a program or anything, to import the menu from other Desktop Environments into my OpenBox right click menu.
    Thank you.

  • Conky Conditional Statement [MOVED TO DESKTOP ENVIRONMENTS!]

Is there a way to make a conky config that will check to see it your wlan card is on/off. When it is on, it should show some set of information that you choose. When it is off, none of that information should be shown.
    I like to see:
    Link Quality
    SSID
    Up
    Down
    Upload
    Download
    IP Address
I know that conky has if-elseif-endif statements, but I assume that those go through the config once, and then don't go through it again.
I guess that it could be done with an external script as well, but I am no programmer, so I am not sure about that.
    Thoughts?

conky's if/else-if statements are run/checked each update so if your interval is 1 then that's each second.
i've seen many conky's around that display one set of info if eth0 is up (ethernet plugged in) and another if wlan0 is up (wifi).  not useful for my desktop so i never saved any of the links.  check through the "post your conky configs" thread here or go to google.
    something like
    ${if_up wlan0} $--wifi info-- $endif${if_up eth0} $--ethernet info-- $endif
    would probably work.
EDIT -- sorry, ignore this; i posted on the one in desktop environments now.

  • When CC will deliver fonts from Typekit to my desktop?

Delivering fonts from Typekit to my desktop — one of the reasons I bought a subscription.
Since the the launch of CC, font and file sharing features deliver only one message "Comming soon".
When to expect these features to go live??

I'm sorry, but I do not agree with your reply Ben.
I signed up for Creative Cloud. I'm paying for that subscription. Included in that subscription, was typekit.  I have read instructions, and watched Adobe.TV video's showing me how to access something - I don't have access to!
Now we are being asked to jump through hoops, sign up for "Early Access"... Beg to be considered from the first come first serve list, keep an eye on emails to see that I am lucky and have been chosen to have something I am ALREADY paying for...
EVEN WORSE!!! You are telling us, SELECTED users already have it!!
    WHAT!!!!?
This is an extract from your website telling you what's included when you sign up
    "Welcome to the Download Center!
Find all of the Adobe desktop applications, services and touch apps that are part of your Creative Cloud membership."
TYPEKIT is one of the items on that list.
Here is a reply from another of your own staff Liz:
    1.Liz, Typekit Support,Oct 15, 2013 1:50 PM   in reply to pearlyshell
    Hi pearlyshell,
I'm sorry that you ran into trouble with this!  Syncing fonts to your desktop is available with a full Creative Cloud membership or a Portfolio, Performance, or Business Typekit plan.
Please advise that I/we will not have to endure weeks/months of waiting for something we are already paying for and not being allowed to use.
That's like delivering someone's new car minus the new audio system that was promised and adding vinegar to the wound by telling them it's okay because aother "SELECT" owners are currently enjoying theirs!

  • Lxappearance and font-hinting

    Hi archers,
I was trying to use lxappearance to change the font hinting settings. But, every time I open it again, it shows "Full" hinting style.
Also, I noticed that lxappearance is creating two files: ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. As far as I can tell, the settings in there are correct after saving them with lxappearance.
Is lxappearance reading the settings from another place than it's writing to?
Am I missing any font configuration file? Is this even the right way to turn off font-hinting? (Or rather set it to "slight").
edit: maybe I should add, I am using awesome WM.
    Thanks.

I explored this some time ago and one issue I had was that I had to reset the font cache to see the changes.

    Hi Wayodi,
I'm sorry you ran into trouble here. Right now, we're still in the early access phase of rolling this feature out. Would you please drop a line to: [email protected] with all of the emails for each Adobe ID you would like to have this feature?
Once I have those, I can see about getting the invites sent out faster.

  • Font Hints in Arch

Is there an equilavent of Debian's deforma in Arch? I can't get my fonts to look the way I want them - is there any way to configure font hints ?

    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts
There's no 'automatic' tool to configure fonts / font hinting.  Check out the above link for a good start, and also check out some of the font threads on the forum here.

  • Install various Desktop Environments

    Hi everybody,
I have been using Arch with Mate DE with lightdm for a while now.
Now I would like to try different DEs like Gnome and KDE on my laptop. In the wiki it explains how to install these desktop environments,
but it is not clear to me whether this requires deleting Mate or not.
In Ubuntu I could install several DEs and select the one I wanted to use when logging in. I guess it is possible to do this in Arch as well,
    but I can't understand how.
Coule somebody help me/point me to the right wiki page?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Cheers,
    Luca

Only thing I'd warn you about is that when you install a new DE, it might import the autostart settings from the most recently run DE on the very first run (I had this going from MATE to Cinnamon and then into Plasma 5). After that, their autostart settings should be independent.
