Font licensing for eBooks (epub with @font-face)

Hello,
The ePub format supports - as you may know - the CSS2 @font-face, but  Adobe's fonts aren't directly embeddable that rule.
At the moment, there are not FAQs or license terms specifically written  for ePub (or other kind of ebook formats) so I'm going to refer to the  currently available documents I found on the web.
A Typblography blog post  (http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography/2010/10/web-font-licensing.html)  clearly describes the difference Adobe sets between "embedding" and  "serving" a font.
Epub format - unfortunately - lies in a sort of no man's land, because  it is a zipped container of browsable documents (xhtml files,  stylesheets, images, fonts), so it can be considered a self-contained  and portable document, but at the same time, it doesn't protect the  fonts from unauthorized use.
Also the Adobe Font Licensing FAQs  (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/antipiracy/ff_faq.html) partially  clarify the field of discussion.
The Adobe's proprietary font obfuscation feature, supported by Adobe  Digital Editions, can be easily overridden with few lines of python code.
Adobe doesn't allow for @font-face embedding but let authors access to  use its fonts via specialized web font services such as Typekit.com  which can't be used by ePubs because of its offline nature.
My questions are:
Can I use an Adobe licensed font (i.e. Minion Pro) in an  ePub ebook using @font-face?
What kind of license or agreement should be  used?
Is there a dedicated contact for licensing-related issues (the [email protected] address just bounces back)?
Indeed, I can already download some ePubs featuring the Minion Pro  typeface. I.e: "Il fu Mattia Pascal" edited by Mondadori (the most important italian publishing company) and freely  downloadable from the LaFeltrinelli store  (http://www.lafeltrinelli.it/products/9788852013089/Il_fu_Mattia_Pascal/Luigi_Pirandello.ht ml).
That makes me confident that an arrangement is possible, isn't it?
I hope to hear soon from you, as I'm writing also on behalf of some  others italian ebook designers.
Thank you,
Matteo Balocco

Great question. Did you ever get a reply?

  • How to buy license for iWorks '09 (with upgrade version 9.3)

I have installed iWorks '09 trial with 9.3 upgrade on my wife's MacBook 10.7.5.  I would like to purchase the license, but the links to do that don't seem to work. Is the purchase still possible? How do I do it?  Thanks.

    Hi,
CON-SU1-AS2A10K9 contract if for ASA+IPS bundle. If AIP-SSM-10 ws purchased as a spare the contract would be CON-SU1-ASIP10K9.
I am not sure whether or not this Cisco Service for IPS contract can be  used to cover just the AIP-SSM-10 if it was purchased as part of a  Bundle instead of a Spare.
I would recommend that you check with your Cisco reseller or Cisco  Sales Representative.

  • License for applications created with adobe flash

    hello,
I'm developing applications using flash and Actionscript 2. Is there a adobe system to use with all flash developed applications where we can have a file that the client downloads (a license), and that file will activate the application to be used for X time. You can say it's like a patch. Do you know if this exists?

    Hi Michael,
The Adobe License Manager (ALM) currently does not support the use case that you mention, but your suggestion has been communicated to the appropriate folks as a possible product enhancement in the future.
    Thanks!

Therefore you MUST get the final answer from someone with authority to speak on behalf of Oracle - and that is a Sales Rep.
However, in the mean time, you can read http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/sig-070616.pdf .
SPECIFICALLY LOOK AT PAGE 15. Many people (including some in this thread) are totaly wrong about how Standard Edition is licensed.

  • Requesting license for two different ssystem with same SID

    Hello,
Is it possible to request 2 license for two systems with same SID. The systems are on different machines and their HW key are different but both have same SID. While requesting license, will it permit to create 2 different license with SAME SID.
    Regards
    Deb

    Hi Anil,
The one for which the license is already requested is the main development portal with SID EP2. I have installed one local version of SAP EP with the same SID EP2. Now we need a license for the second system.
If we change the HW key of the original license which is already applied in the main development portal under SMP and apply for a new license for the new local version, can it have any future implications, if any.
What is the best way to deal with the situation. Is there a full proof way to change the SID of the EP system, which I can try in the local EP system.

  • Which part number for CSC-SSM with Plus license?

    Dear All,
Which part number for CSC-SSM with Plus License? i saw the part number for standard license.
    could you let me know?
    Best regards,

    Hi,
The part number is the following:
    ASA-CSCX-YP-ZY
where X is your CSC model, Y is the number of seats of the license and Z is the number of years.
For instance, if you need a 2 year plus license for a CSC10 with 250 seats, the part number would be ASA-CSC10-250P-2Y

  • Ask question for license for CUCM

Here are the concerns of client.
    1.)    First Email:
Those licenses delivered are for UCM before v9 and without UWL, we will need license for CUCMv9/v10 with UWL.
    2.)    Second Email:
Those license you delivered are not able to import to our call manager due to version restriction, that’s why we need your help to figure out with Cisco the possibility to use those license in CUCMv9.

    Hi,
Cisco DLU have gone end of sale , so, customer needs to place order for UCL/CUWL licenses.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/unified-communications/unified-communications-manager-callmanager/eos-eol-notice-c51-732309.html
If the customer has existing UCL/CUWL licenses which have been ordered for CUCM version 9 but using CUCM7/8 then, u can speak to licensing team to get licenses for CUCM 7/8.
Lastly, customer can also go for upgradation to CUCM9/10, provided they have valid ESW and UCSS contract[which is now SWSS] and then, use these ordered licenses.

Am I missing something? Has anyone gotten these three (ADF w/ myfaces impl and facelets) to work together properly?

    Hi,
It is supposed to work fine and is working okay, in general, for me. I was setting up a test app yesterday and logged the steps in my blog (http://www.jroller.com/page/mjdenham). I think I logged everything.

Thank you for reading my post
is there any sample available for using captcha with adf faces ?

    Hi,
nott hat I am aware of. However, I started a project to build a custom JSF component using
    http://jcaptcha.sourceforge.net/
Not sure when I have this finished, but the goal is to have this working with ADF Faces (not sure if it makes sense to bind the component to ADF though)

  • Font license for @font-face

    Hi forum,
My name is Riaz,a web designer and developer. I have Genuine photoshop CS4 and it has been bundled with several adobe fonts. I would like to use those fonts in my own website (not for others) by using @font-face option in CSS3. I think it is not like embedding and I am not sure about it. I like "Trajan Pro" and it gives "editable embedding" license, so is this allows embedding in a web page.
I use to obey the licensing terms every where , so I am not requesting anybody to provide anything free but I need help to know whether it is legal or illegal.
So ,Kindly somebody  help me to go in a right path.
    with kind regards
    Riaz

    Riaz,
You have to review the EULA for type products. This page
    http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/legal/index.html
contains links to the embedding rules. It says »All Adobe Type Showroom fonts can be embedded in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files, as well as other types of electronic documents.« but it never tells us what »other types of electronic documents« are. But in the EULA it says very clearly:
2.3  Server Use. […] No other network use is permitted, including, but not limited to use of the Software, either directly or through commands, data or instructions, from or to a Computer not part of your Internal Network, for Internet or web hosting services or by any user not licensed to use this copy of the Software under a valid licence from Adobe […]
Putting the font on your web server would be such a web hosting service.
Check out Adobe Web Fonts which offer Trajan:

  • Font licensing for use with CSS3 in web pages

    Hello,
most of you probably know that with CSS3 and using @font-face tag u can embed a font on your web page.
But since for using this tag u must upload the original OTF font file to the server i am wondering how does this conflict with licensing issues.
I would like to use Myriad Light font for headers on my webpage but am concerned about this issue. Do I need any additional licenses and and where can i get them.
    Hope anyone can anwser this
    Best,
    S

    Hi Jonathan,
if you stop your cloud subscription the included typekit subscription ends, too. Therefore websites that use typekit fonts won't display them anymore. (Text will be displayed with your fall back font or your browsers default font.) To keep your websites working as you intended you need to keep paying for a typekit subscription.

Cloud includes a typekit Portfolio subscription. So the page view limitations of the portfolio subscription apply.

I haven't found out about the usage of desktop fonts, after you end your subscription. I doubt that Adobe allows to use the fonts when the subscription is cancelled.

  • Are all of the fonts that come with Dreamweaver CS6 licensed for web use?

Are all of the fonts that come with Dreamweaver CS6 licensed for web use?

I also have Creative Suite 5, which I believe comes with an Adobe set of fonts. Are these all licensed?
Licensed?  Yes, but not necessarily for the web. Some licenses allow use in print or images but not the web.
    Custom Web Fonts
For legal reasons, don't just assume you can use any font you wish on the web. Fonts are protected by intellectual property laws in much the same way that software is protected from unlawful copying, modifying or distributing. In other words, a font owner can say "Sure, you can use my font but you can't alter it, you can't reproduce it and you can't distribute it." On the web, that's a deal breaker because you need to be able to do all three.
These font-families are common to most Windows/Mac systems.

  • @font-face and font licenses

    Hello,
I'm working with a developer who has a licensed version of Adobe's "Univers" font. Can we use @font-face from CSS 3 to include this font in our website? Or, do we need to use a different type of font-embedding in order to work with the font's licensing type.
    Thanks,
    erichb2010

I thought you meant font-family. If this font is already included with Snow Leopard, why do you need to embed it? Just refer to it and include a fallback. Windows users won't see the font - bummer for them.
No, you may not extract the font from the operating system and serve it up on your own web site. You can't include Apple files even if you are writing an application that only runs on Macs. If a resource is available on the system, you can use it. You may not copy it except as a backup. You certainly can't distribute it.
