Font management w/ mac word

hi-
I've searched everywhere online- honest! but I can't seem to find any solutions for (simple) font management in the mac ms word app. I've disabled fonts though the Font Book app, specifically in the USER identified collection. This doesn't seem to have any affect on what shows up in mac ms word. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank-
Lorelei

Hi, Lorelei,
Some applications, such as MS Word and some Adobe Creative Suite applications, install their own fonts for use by their own applications. These fonts are sometimes installed somewhere within the application's folder, or perhaps within a folder like Application Support within one of the Library folders on your computer.
If you can't manage the fonts using Font Book or Linotype FontExplorer, you usually need to find and manually move the fonts. Then when the program next starts, it won't be able to locate and load the fonts.
Sorry, I don't recall where Word installs its fonts. (I moved mine long ago and can't remember where they were in the first place.) Try looking in a couple of the places I alluded to, and if that doesn't pan out, try Google.
Good luck. ...pt

  • Font management in Mac Mavericks

Suddenly my fonts menu is crammed with fonts that I would never use, ever want. I manage fonts with Extensis Suitcase Fusion 5 despite its crankiness with Adobe products. But I can't find the font manager that's filling my menu with crap like  Mona Lisa and Lariat. Is InDesign (Illustrator and Photoshop too) pulling fonts out of some hidden cache? I own these fonts but have not activated them in FontBook or Suitcase.
Oh, and when I do activate a typeface, it only shows up when I restart the application.  How's that for old school?  Remember when you had to restart the whole OS to get fonts to show up?

  • Tamil fonts on my Mac  (Word) get distorted. Need help

Tamil fonts get distorted when I use Murasu Anjal on my Word for Mac. Hence, i have been using Open office. How di I put it right in word for Mac?

First you are posting in the wrong forum, your profile indicates you have a MacBook, this is an iMac forum. Next  you should NEVER NEVER NEVER shut down with the power button. If your system freezes attempt to force quit the offending application, you can force quit by using the Apple Menu or pressing Command + Option + Esc. Or you can always leave Activity Monitor running and when it freezes check AM to see if you have anything taking all your CPU, if so quit that action.
I suspect your HD has crashed, you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. Make  sure you run in Extended Mode! If it reports errors then you need to boot from the OS X disc that came with the computer or the latest retail OS X disc  you have and run Disk Utilities - Repair Disk. If it finds errors run it over again until it reports no errors. After 4-5 runs of Repair Disk it still reports errors you need to replace the HD.
If you want to try to Boot to Safe Mode the instructions are in Safe Mode.

  • Font management on a Mac Server for use via the network

Can font management be done on a Mac Server through Font Book so that other users can have one place where they can access our organized fonts via the network?

Ok found a sollution, i tried a couple of things, it boils down to this.
    login as admin user
    1. demote the network user to a local user,
use workgroup manager for it use export in menu to export user from LDAP
import to Local directory, reset the password and delete the LDAP user.
    2. you chould now be able to localy login to the account, do that.
    3. open the terminal and run the following commands (probably need sudo for it and you need to change <username> to the user you want to change)
         chmod -R -N /Users/<username>/
         chown -R <username>:staff /Users/<username>
         chmod -R 700 /Users/<username>
    4. check that every thing in you're account is working again as should.
    5. promote local user to network user.
use workgroup manager for it use export in menu to export user from Local
import to LDAP directory, reset the password and delete the Local user.
this did the trick for me, hope it helps.

  • Professional Font Management?

I just upgraded my PowerMac G5 to a new Mac Pro. In the past, I've used Suitcase to manage the fonts I use in various applications, including Adobe CS 3. I used Suitcase mainly because of it's auto-activation feature.
With this latest release of Leopard, is Font Book now ready for prime time in a professional graphic design environment? If so, how do I add my Suitcase fonts to Font Book?
If not, what Leopard compatible font manager do you suggest?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

Basically, Suitcase activated the font, but ID CS2 wouldn't recognize that it was activated, which means I wasn't able to use it.
I've never had a single issue with Suitcase Fusion. By the way, I am not at all saying I don't believe you, I've just never seen it happen.
As far as which one to use? Depends on your usage. Suitcase Fusion picked up Font Reserve's Font Sense technology. As long as you're using auto activation, it virtually guarantees that you'll use exactly the same version of a font you used the first time in a document. This can be extremely important to prevent type reflow on larger documents. FontExplorer X can't do that. If you used ITC's Bookman Bold the first time, but use Adobe's Bookman Bold the next time, it won't know the difference.
Aside from that, FontExplorer X is an incredible value. And I don't mean just because it's free. I mean that it is still free considering how good it's become in a short amount of time. If you want to activate fonts in place with FontExplorer X as you can with Suitcase, during the initial setup, choose "Don't manage font files". It could be worded better there, but that's the choice you want to activate fonts in place.

  • Font Management 1 - I have a Bazillion Fonts but can't see them all in Photoshop.

Photoshop has an unacknowledged Font limit.
The workaround is to use a
Font Manager and only activate the fonts you need.
There are 6 commonly used Font Managers.
FontAgent Pro - the majority of Photoshop Users who participate on these forums seem to think this one is best. FAP is the most ATM Deluxe like. Auto Font Activation works perfectly for most, with no complaints being reported.
Suitcase - this seems to be the next most popular, however, Auto Font Activation seems to cause problems for some.
Font Reserve - this application was bought by the company that owns Suitcase Folk.
Master Juggler - this is a relatively new application for OSX.
Font Book - is built into Mac OSX since version 1.03. Apple have a useful Video Tutorial on using Font Book on their
    web site
Linotype FontExplorer X - this is the newest font manager for OSX. its free and is at beta version 3 as of this posting.

    oliburner:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's a common complaint. One workaround is to use one of the 3rd party keyword apps like Keyword Manager which will let you arrange keywords hierarchically.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Mac:word 04/08 random removal of spaces

short: mac:word removes spaces from documents randomly.
long: At first I thought it might be an issue with windows:word 2007 users and mac:word 04/08 users working on the same documents; however, I have had several instances were a mac:word 04/08 document that is created, edited, saved and re-opened on OSX (Leopard 10.5.2) without interaction with Windows; has spaces throughout randomly removed.
This is most annoying. I have found it hard to find other users experiencing this. Googling for the issue or searching in various forums just presents complaints and whines about interoperability with Leopard spaces. This is a much bigger and more frustrating issue, trust me!
    Versions:
    OSX Leopard 10.5.2
    mac:word 2008 v12.0.1 (08305)
    mac:word 2004

I have created two documents, one standard no modified styles and one with modified styles. Filled teh documents with the text:
The cow jumps over the moon.
Passing both documents backwards and forwards to OSX and Windows, opening, editing and closing and I can't re-create the issue in either document.
I followed the instructions at http://word.mvps.org/Mac/damagedPrefs.html for recreating the preferences and repeated the above steps, still can't re-create the issue.
Now oddly enough, the words do NOT appear as misspelt (i.e no red squiggly line) in Windows or OSX. If you manually preform a spell check they are picked up.
This can happen if I author a document, save it and re-open locally, so I did manage to rule Windows out of the equation.
If a document is opened on Windows and the spaces have been removed, opening it again on the mac, results in seeing that in fact the spaces have been removed.

  • User Experience with CS/CS2 fonts and font management

Im just ordered a 2.0MBP and am wondering about other user's experience with the MBP and CS or CS2 running in Rosetta as well as font management. I know there are lots of post about Adobe and Rosetta, but no cohesive forums describing what most user's experiences have been- both good and bad.
I plan on running CS (all apps except Version Cue) as i will wait for CS3 and skip over CS2. For fonts im currently running FontExplorer X and plan on continuing.
Id love to hear what Adobe software is working well (or not), what font management you are using and what system.
    15inch G4Ti-Book, G5 Quad, MBP 2.0 (ordered)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

So im curious, out of these applications i have installed will any of them install anything into the MacHD>Users>Applenewton>Library>Fonts Folder?
    I have installed:
    Adobe CS2
    Macromedia Studio 8
    Microsoft Office 2004
iknow those apps have their own fonts they use to work with their programs
i just want to know what would be safe to move around or remove period from my user font library.
i dont mean to sound redundant but i spaced out/forgot how i originally organized my fonts i know i added certain fonts to my font folder in my user's library font folder but cant recall if i added arial/verdana and some other fonts.
is there to check what apps depend on them or what?
    thanks in advanced!

  • How is it that fonts in the Mac system can be damaged?

How is it that fonts in the Mac system can be damaged?
It does not hapen in PC systems, ever!
How do we go about replacing the damaged fonts?
I treid to delete and reinstall but no sucess.
Also, Mac systems can only have active about 250 fonts.
PC systems can have up to 1,000 fonts and run very smoothly with any hitches.
    Any sloutions or recommendations?
Looks like I made a wrong choice.
I thought that Mac systems was very stable when it comes to graphic related applications, but it seems that I was WRONG.

Sorry if I have offended other Mac users.
But, I would really like to continue using my Macbook Pro.
    Cheers and Merry Christmas, everyone!!!

How is it that fonts in the Mac system can be damaged?
As ds store noted. Any file on any part of the drive can be damaged at any time. This is true of any OS, not just the Mac.
It does not happen in PC systems, ever!
Why in the world would you think that's true? I used DOS/Windows for years. Fonts on PCs get damaged too, for pretty much the same reasons.
How do we go about replacing the damaged fonts?
You can replace just the fonts from your Snow Leopard installation disk. See the bottom of my article, Font Management in OS X for instructions.
I tried to delete and reinstall but no success.
Not enough info. Reinstalled from where?
Also, Mac systems can only have active about 250 fonts.
I don't know where you read or heard that, but it's 100% wrong.
PC systems can have up to 1,000 fonts and run very smoothly with any hitches.
And I've had as many as 8500 active (for testing, I would never do it day to day). Do I win?
    Any solutions or recommendations?
The most likely reason, assuming you replaced the fonts with known good copies is Font Book. Put bluntly, it's one of the worst font managers available. It's database is easily corrupted. When that happens, fonts that are marked as active in its interface won't appear in some, or all apps. You'll find you can't activate or deactivate fonts. Use these steps to clean Font Book up so it works.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
After the Mac finishes booting back to the desktop from Safe Mode, do the following to clear the rest of the font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Looks like I made a wrong choice.
As opposed to what? Dealing with viruses each and every day?
I thought that Mac systems was very stable when it comes to graphic related applications, but it seems that I was WRONG.
Boy, you sure know how to make people want to help you.
A simple font base also Mac system cannot handle as well as a PC based system.
Also flat out wrong. Fonts are simple. You add them and use them. Turn them off when you don't want them active. Learning and understanding a new OS is usually a good idea before you start trashing it.
If problems return soon after resetting Font Book with the notes above, then you most likely installed junk fonts. Free fonts are worth what you paid for them and are the number one source of such problems on both Macs and PCs.
Secondly, get rid of Font Book. If you use and manage fonts every day, get a professional manager. Suitcase Fusion 4 and FontExplorerX Pro are your best choices.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Life after Suitcase Fusion. How do I install a font manager to Tiger?

I just rid my Dual Processor G5 Power Mac w/ Tiger 4.7 upgraded system (gasp) of Suitcase Fusion, (say no more). I need to install Font Agent Pro 3 or FontExplorer X.
However, I'm green at the thought of reintroducing another font manager. Do I shut down Font book? I've read that no font manager should run side by side with font book, or any other font manager. I'm still suffering a little PSD.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Running Adobe Creative Suite

I guess my real gripe is that why? would Apple remove a feature from the OS that was there for more than 15 years...
A very good question. There are a lot of pre OS X features that have slowly worked their way back in, such as spring loaded folders. But why this feature still hasn't reappeared this far into OS X's development is puzzling and frustrating.
I'd never heard of Font Smasher before, so looked it up and downloaded the demo. Being from the same folks who produce Font Agent Pro, it's probably pretty nice software. Rather pricey though at $49 for a single usage application. Especially for someone in your position who would have to purchase more than a few copies in order to spread them around the shop. I'll stick with using Font Doctor for now since I already have it.
But yes, it drives me a bit nuts that we still can't do this as easily as we could in OS 7 - 9. A copyright issue Apple had to conform to? Not very plausible since we could do this up until OS X. About all you can do is give Apple feedback and ask that we get this function back. I'm sure you know as well as I some of the mishmashed suitcases clients send that need to be cleaned up in order to use them.
The need to do able to get into font suitcases will be around for a long time, so it's not a minor thing.

  • Windows fonts on a Mac?? A tiny question

    Hi All,

It can be done. If you have a font manager such as Font Explorer X or Suitcase, set it to import the fonts and it should scan through them to ensure they're usable.

This error occurs apparently at a random time. Still, I noticed that is occurs more ofter when using 'Balance Columns' from 'Text Frame Options' and the 'Preview' box is checked.
    Any suggestions to fix it?

    To be more clearly:
    1. With Cambria Fonts installed (files: CAMBRIA.TTC, CAMBRIAB.TTF, CAMBRIAI.TTF, CAMBRIAZ.TTF  all 4 version 5.96 located in windows\fonts folder)  ID crashes and Office 2010 equations if is just fine.
    2. Without Cambria Fonts, ID is ok, but Office 2010 equations (from Word) are blank, the design of the equation is not shown (missing font - wich is Cambria Regulat - realised that Math Cambria is included there) and soon Word 2010 crashes.
So the Cambria font is version 5.96 and those 4 files are for Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold-Italic.
There is no other file or font with prefix Cambria, in Fonts folder or available in any application.
    New experiment:
    1. Installed just Cambria Regular font (CAMBRIA.TTC file version 5.96). Word 2010 equations are ok but ID crashes.

  • Font Management for PC

    Hi,
I was surprised that I didn't find any thread on Font Management. It can be a designer's nightmare if there is no good font management.
On the mac I am using FontExplorer X. It was free till lately and very good. Now it is a commercial application.
My problem, though, is on the Windows machines. I have Bitsream Font Navigator, that came with the Corel Suite. It is not good, but at least it reduces the headache a bit.
What are the best options for a mixed (Mac and Windows) environment? With or without a server.

Jim, I have FontExplorerX 1.2.3. I already downloaded the trial and will probably purchase the Pro version.
Thanks for the windows link. A few weeks ago I found it but didn't have time to download. since then, they removed the link from their site, or I was unable to find it.
I know I am not alone, and many other print designers have the same issues, and yet I could not find any post in this Print Design Discussion about font management.

  • What is the best font management software to use with CS6?

I currently use Extensis Fusion 3 but it cannot auto-activate my fonts in CS6. It looks like Fusion 5 is also limited. Is there a better font management software to use with CS6?

Get rid of Norton a/k/a Symantec. It is one of the worst pieces of trash you can install on a Mac.
You do not need any additional anti-virus software than is already designed into OS X to protect your Mac against malware. I assume you paid enough for your iMac and that's part of what you paid.
If you use Windows, or are concerned about harboring viruses that target Windows, or care about friends who use Windows, then get ClamXav. It's in the App Store and it is free.
Since friends don't let friends use Windows, I have no use for it.
