Font menu crashes Pages in Leopard

Clicking the Font menu in either the toolbar or menu causes Pages to crash in OS 10.5 Leopard. Anyone have suggestions?

Thank you Dennis for responding so quickly,
I was able to find the file com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist with your advise. I moved it to the trash, emptied the trash, and restarted Pages. Unfortunately, Pages still crashes when opening the font menu. I tried the above several times. I even tried restarting the computer, after removing the file, without success. Any other ideas?
Again, thank you for your attention.

  • Change font menu source?

    In the font menu in Pages' toolbar, I see all fonts installed on my computer - even those in other scripts such as Arabic. On the other hand, in TextEdit, I see only the fonts in the "English" list in Font Book. Is there any way I can make the font menu in Pages (and the rest of iWork) work the same way? Could I do the same in Office 2011?
    I'm hesitant to disable those fonts on the system level to get the same effect. While they're not on the list of required system fonts, as they represent other scripts the computer is capable of showing, I think there might be unintended consequences.

  • Illustrator CS5 crashes when scrolling through font menu.

    Hello Adobe Community,
    I am in desperate need of help with my Illustrator CS5 program. It has suddenly started to crash when I scroll through the Font menu from the Type menu at the top of the program. I am using a late 2013 Macbook Pro 13" with retina display on OSX 10.9.2. I am using Illustrator CS5 v15.0.0. I have read through scores of forum threads and tried every solution that was suggested and still cannot resolve this problem. I am stumped and my back is up against the wall. My work flow has now slowed to crawl since I have to now search through fonts using FontBook then manually type in the font I need in the font character field. I believe this problem is due to a corrupt font. The trouble started after I installed a new font. I have since deactivated and deleted that font but the problem persists. I am not a "tech head" so I don't know how to generate those long code pages that some can. I can make pretty pictures with Adobe products but I can't service those Adobe products.
    Here is a list of things I have tried so far (at least what I remember):
    *     I have deactivated and deleted the font I believed to be corrupt.
    *     I have validated all my fonts with FontBook and deleted all corrupt files.
    *     I have turned off the "enable missing glyph protecting" in the preferences.
    *     I have used FontNuke to delete my font caches.
    *     I have reset my Pram.
    *     I have repaired all my permission with disk utility.
    *     I have removed all fonts except for the standard system fonts.
    *     I have uninstalled Illustrator and done a clean install (my system was migrated from a backup-however is has worked fine for months).
    *     I have deleted my library/preferences/abobefnt.plst.
    *     I have change the font preview to small.
    *     I deleted all my fonts and restored them from time machine from before I had installed that last font I believed to be buggy.
    *     I have prayed to Jebus.
    So far none of this has worked. The closest I got was after deleting all the corrupt fonts with FontBook. It worked for a day. Then the next day started crashing again. I am completely lost at this point. I don't know what else to do.
    Can anybody please help me figure this out?

    Update - I figured out how those crash reports are done so if anyone thinks they can help but needs to see a report please let me know and I will paste it into a reply.
    Update 2 - I tried turning off the font preview all together and this seems to have stopped the crashes so far. I think the bug can be isolated to this function. Problem is I need that function.

  • Illustrator CS5 is crashing every time I open the Font Menu

    I'm using one of the new Mac Book pro Retinas.  Every time I open the Type>Font menu the program crashes.  Sometimes I can scroll down a little ways but sometimes it crashes immediately.  Photoshop is loading the previews fine so I believe this is an illustrator problem and not a more general font problem.
    Thank you for your help.

    Ok, so I am now leaning towards a corrupt font also like Wade Z. suggested. A few things to try if you haven't first though.
    1.) Did you repair permissions using Disk Utility in the Applications > Utilities folder? I'd do that and run it a few times until it runs "clean". Meaning that you don't see it repair anything anymore in the list. (I'm assuming you're on a Mac). If you're on a PC this won't help.
    2.) You could try resetting the PRAM etc., but I don't think that will help this problem. Sometimes you never know though.
    So, if it is a corrupt font, I need to know if you are using a font management program or if you manually place them in font folders? (again assuming you're using a Mac). Post Script Type 1 fonts are known to be more finicky to use in Snow Leopard and Lion. I had some problems with duplicate fonts that were causing havoc on my machine just a few weeks ago. So you may want to try and track down if you have duplicate fonts also. I just used Spotlight to find where any errant fonts were installed. If you install fonts manually I'd temporarily remove them all from the User > Library > fonts folder (or wherever else you may have installed them) and then restart. That way you can test to see if that might be the problem. Then if it is you can add half the fonts back in and do a bubble sort to find which font is corrupt. A bubble sort is a way of taking half of something and testing if it's good or bad. Then if it's a bad half, taking half again to see if it's good or bad. That way you can narrow in on a specific file causing the problem. It can be a little tedious with having to restart, but is one of the best ways of finding a corrupt font. Another method may be to remove all of one type of font and add each set in until  the problem shows up again (if removing them is what fixes it).
    If you use the built in FontBook you can try this: http://www.lifespy.com/2007/mac-tips-find-and-eliminate-corrupt-fonts-in-osx/
    Hopefully you'll get it worked out.

  • After hard drive crash, Pages app brought over, and upgrade to snow leopard installed, Pages would not launch.  Re-downloaded the 3.0.3 update and Pages launched, but will not open any documents or start new document.

    After a hard-drive crash, Pages application was brought over from the old hard drive, and upgraded to snow leopard.  However, Pages would not launch.  I do not have the disks and the computer was given to me by my son with iWork 08 installed, so I do not have the ability to re-install using Purchases.  I re-installed the update 3.0.3, which I already had, but thought it worth a try.  That enabled Pages to launch, but it will not open a new or old document.  I can see in preview the document, but it will not open.  Any suggestions besides repurchasing Pages.  I've just put out a lot of money for a new hard drive and retrieval of apps and docs from the old hard drive and would like not to have to put more money in it.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    You can not simply drag over Pages, particularly if it was perhaps damaged in a crash.
    As it was only Pages '08 it may be time to upgrade to Pages '09 from the App Store. It is not that expensive and will allow you to install it on any Mac sharing the same Apple I.D. and protect you from a repeat of this problem.
    There are free alternatives to Pages if you are hard strapped, it depends on what you are using Pages for, it is not the only option by far.

  • Illustrator/Photoshop CS5.5 crashes when I'm in the font menu

    Hi there, I've seen another discussion about this, but unfortunately it didn't solve my problem. I'm running Yosemite and Illustrator CS5.5 (I've had some similar problems in PS too). When I go into the font menu in Illustrator, I'll start scrolling and it crashes. Sometimes I don't even get to scroll before it crashes. Admittedly I've downloaded a lot of fonts lately, so I thought it might be a corrupt font. Sure enough, I found a couple of bad ones, and some sketchy ones, and I removed them. Then I went and cleared my font caches using Onyx. Neither of these things seem to help. I know I'm not the only one who is having this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    bexicon,
    Did you try item 1) in 5) of the list? That implies moving all the fonts out, then see, then move half the fonts in again, or something similar, to find every substandard font that might hide somewhere.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How can I change the font in the page menu across the top?

    I would like to change the font and its color in the page menu across the top of the website I'm building. The inspector doesn't give me the option nor does the font menu.

    The easiest way to do this is to hide the default navigation and build your own.....

  • Appleworks crashes when using  "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature

    In the past I was able to use the pull-down menu for "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature. Recently I found that this no longer was working, as I had trashed the preferences folder and the plist preference file for Appleworks. When I reselected the "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" item in the General preferences and selected OK, the program unexpectedly quit. This happened repeatedly, even after repairing permissions and pre-bindings, trashing the current preferences for appleworks, validating the fonts in the Font Book program, trashing other preferences, etc. It turns out that sometimes I get past the saving step for the preferences in Appleworks, but when I go to the pull-down menu for "Fonts", on the first try, I get a viewing of the fonts in their actual format, which crashes then if I am scrolling down through the fonts list. On the next try, I crash immediately when I highlight the fonts pull down menu. These symptoms are repeatable. Is it that I have too many fonts in my Font Book list? I have 148 listed fonts for my user account in Font Book. Also the font for Equation Editor named "MT Extra Plain:001.001" that I believe is associated with Appleworks is listed as having minor problems by Font Book in the name usability table and in the name table structure. If I delete the equation editor fonts this does not solve the problem. Similarly, If I de-install Appleworks, including preferences, and reinstall it, this also does not solve the problem. Are you able to help me stabilize Appleworks so I can use the "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature again? Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

    I looked for this font, yet it is not in any of the Fonts folders, either in the Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts location or in the user account/Library/Fonts folder which I accessed as you indicated via the "Go to Folder" menu). I do find however using EasyFind a file named Bauhaus 93.0_B8B8.ATSD in the following location: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ ATS.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Fontinfo/. Information on this file indicates that Bauhaus 93.0_B8B8.ATSD is a Unix Executable File. Is this a needed part of the system, and should I delete this?
    For your further information, my version of Appleworks is 6.2.9, and per another posting by ptr66 Nov 3, 2008 (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8397234#8397234), not related directly to this posting, I also have disabled the Autosave and Recent items functions in the General preferences of Appleworks, which that posting indicated stabilize the program. These had no effect. Thank you for your input.
    Sincerely,

  • Illustrator crashing every time I open drop down FONT menu

    Apetherbrigde,
    It sounds like a corrupt font or corrupt font caches, see items 1) and 11) under 5) in the list.

    I would like to see the Pages Fonts in there actual fonts.

    Hi John,
    I was just browsing the discusions. I have nothing to add here except that I noticed that you have dual identities. You would do well to try your best to use only one of them. I don't remember where I saw it, but it's my impression that the moderators frown on users having more than one identity here. There is some potential for abuse that they try to guard against.

  • Illustrator CS5.1 Crashing while scrolling font menu

    Hi, I have a brand new Macbook pro with Retina using OSX 10.9.3. I am trying to use my Illustrator CS5.1 for the first time on this computer. Every time I try to scroll down my fonts it crashes. I have tried validating my fonts and they all appear not to be corrupted. I have used the disk utility to check for any issues on the HD and that's clear. Gojoe,
    You may try to clear the font cache; instructions may be read here: http://www.fontmarketplace.com/info/font-help.aspx; there are font caches clearing applications for Mac, searchable with the search term clear font caches.

  • "Font menu in actual fonts" still not in Pages?!

    Pages 06 had a very clunky way to access fonts, with its lamentable Font palette.
    Pages 08 has a big improvement with its Format Bar. But STILL it doesn't show WYSIWYG fonts.
    AppleWorks has provided this for years. It's a basic feature of a word processing program.
    Or is there a way to get WYSIWIG fonts in the Format Bar that I am missing?

  • All apps in Office 2008 Crash with Snow Leopard.

    All apps in Office 2008 Crash with Snow Leopard. This is the only problem I am having since the upgrade. How can this be fixed?

    Hello,
    you don't write what kind of crash you are facing. The one I met was that after launching any of office programs it hanged on splash window, telling "Optimizing menu font performace".
    I found a problem in FontBook - a lot of fonts had a yellow warning triangle there. When I clicked "Resolve duplicates", almost all my fonts were moved to trash (and Office started OK). I believe the updates I made from Tiger, to Leopard to Snow Leopard, mixed with installation of MS Office fonts made this mess.
    I took the whole /Library/Fonts folder from another computer and replaced my broken Fonts folder on this computer. Reboot and all works fine.

  • MS Office 2008 crashes with Snow Leopard

    Since installing SL on my mac, ms 2008 word and excel crash all the time.
    ??? Help

    I had similar problems - none of the Office 2008 applications would load after I upgraded to SL, and they seemed to be tied to the font book application.
    Here's a response that I got from Microsoft support:
    Based on your email, after updating to Snow Leopard the Office applications are not opening freezing at the Optimizing font menu.
    The first steps you have done for deleting the font cache and Office preferences usually resolve this sort of issue. I have seen it work best when we are booted into the safe boot.
    I would like to boot the computer into safe boot, delete the preferences again and then try opening Office while still in Safe Boot.
    We have to start your Mac in Safe Boot; here are the steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Press the power button.
    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the SHIFT key.
    Note: The SHIFT key should be held as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone. However, do not press the SHIFT key before you hear the startup tone.
    4. Release the SHIFT key when you see the grey Apple and progress indicator on the screen. The progress indicator looks similar to a spinning gear.
    5. During the startup, you will see the words "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
    a. If the Mac OS X is configured to startup to the login screen, log on as the user who is running the Office for Mac software. Otherwise, skip this step.
    b. Immediately press the SHIFT key. This will bypass any startup items in the Startup Items folder.
    I would like to try to trash the Office preferences, here are the steps:
    Please quit all Microsoft Applications before beginning. Any custom preferences will be set back to default. Also any custom dictionaries or auto correct settings will be deleted. Please let me know when you have a custom dictionary, then we can get this file from your trash and move it back to the Preferences folder.
    1. Click on the Hard Disk
    2. Click on "Users"
    3. Click on the folder with your user name (house symbol)
    4. Click on "Library"
    5. Click on "Preferences"
    6. Drag any files starting with "com.microsoft" to the trash (don't empty the trash)
    7. Drag the "Microsoft" folder to the trash (don't empty the trash)
    8. I would like you to restart the computer again into safe boot
    To get back to a regular boot, just restart the Mac, go to the Apple and choose to restart the Mac.
    In reality, I found the the solution was to Validate fonts and delete all duplicate or identified damaged fonts. Once I did that and applied the Microsoft advice above, the Office applications loaded fine.
