Font Outlines For Distorted Type?

before sending my file to the printer, i would like to outline the document's text to avoid font substitution if the printer doesn't have the font available.
to outline all of my text, i first Select > All on Active Artboard and then choose Type > Create Outlines.  however, there are many areas of text in my document that contain an arc envelope distortion.  these arced text fields were not outlined and i can still reach their editable text field by going down a few layers.
should i also outline the arced type for these fonts incase the printer doesn't have the font available, or was creating an arc distortion the same thing as outlining the text?
the reason i'm asking is because it will take me a very long time to individually process each one of these arced text fields if they, too, should be outlined.

I haven't tried to replicate your issue on my computer but if what your saying is true you should have probably converted to outlines "before" applying the envelope distortion.  I am not sure if you can save the distortion settings as a preset but if you can then it would be a matter of saving the presets for each arc instance, removing the current instance, outlining the text, and then reapplying it.  I know it will take some time but when sending something to the printer you definitely don't want to take chances.
The other option is setting up your preflight options in Acrobat properly so that when you save the Illustrator PDF you will embed all of the fonts and you don't have to worry about outlining the fonts.

  • Should I create outlines for a type logo before saving as a pdf?

I have designed a logo in Illustrator (CS3) which has three elements:  the company symbol, company name, and a tagline.  I did not alter the typeface in any way, but I set it with some very tight custom kerning.  The tagline is in a small size italic.  I need to create a pdf of this logo for the client, who will then send it on to various printers to drop into several different publications.
My question is: should I create an outlined version of the type before making the pdf?  This option is probably the "safest" for insuring the correct result from unknown printers, but I really hate the thicker look of outlined type.  I know Illustrator embeds a subset of the fonts along with the pdf, but I'm not sure if this is enough to avoid problems from printers who do not have the font installed on their own system.
I have read several discussions on this forum regarding the pros and cons of outlining type, but the issues usually involve text type rather than a single logo with only a few words.  While I prefer to avoid outlined type, I know some printers request it.  What are the best pdf presets to use if I do not outline the type?  Thank you for any advice.

Yes. A logo is a graphic. Treat it as such. You don't want replication of an identity mark to ever be dependent upon a system condition (presence of a font) that may or may not be there. A robust logo is deliverable in multiple formats. Not everything can import a PDF as a spot graphic (far from it).
For just one obvious example: Most true logos are going to be rendered on a sign. That necessitates its being cut on a vector plotter. Industry standard vinyl plotters can't do that with a font that's embeded in a PDF.
Whether the tagline itself should be treated as an actual element of the logo proper is another matter. One would have to see the specifics to advise on that.

  • Fonts available for use in books

I made a book in which I used a bit of a Japanese font. (I changed the font choice for the text box on that page). After much discussion with printservices, they said that the font needs to be "embedded" to print properly. Only the following fonts can be used freely:
    Baskerville
    Brush Script
    Century Gothic
    Gill Sans
    Helvetica
    Helvetica Neue
    Markerfelt
    Papyrus
Is it possible to embed the font with Aperture tools?
I did a work-around by using an image of the page with the font on it, but I'd like to know the answer.
    Thanks.

    1) How does one check the licensing rights for a font?
For Adobe Type 1 products you have to have the licence agreement at hand, because the font program dictionary itself has no mechanism with with the type manufacturer can set embedding to off, to on with permission to print or to on with permission to extract for editing.
For any and all products that fall under the TrueType Specification version 1.0 of 1990 and later (Apple and Microsoft simple TrueType 1, Apple Advanced Typography and Microsoft OpenType, the font file itself has a mechanism that determines what you are allowed to do.
    2) How does one embed a font in Aperture? or Adobe Acrobat Professional (I own the Adobe CS2 suite)?
When you work in e.g. Aperture or Pages, the assumption is that you have permission to install the font file on your machine and render the glyph designs to your display and printer.
It is when you want to share the glyph designs that licencing sets limits, and you share the glyph designs by saving them into a page description language such as PDF.
Technically, Aperture or Pages will run through the list of font files you have used, subset the tables of the TrueType Specification to save space, and embed the stream in the PDF printing master.
If in the process of parsing the tables of the Specification the system finds a font file that does not permit embedding for printing, then the system should flag you.
If the system does not flag you that embedding is disallowed for font file XXX, then you are in the clear legally - but not for Adobe Type 1, see above.
If you ZIP archive or SIT archive a font file family and send to a friend for installation on her system, then the first assumption above is broken and you are not clear legally.
For as long as I have written prepress copy the people making type have been complaining bitterly about theft. Type was the first object of theft in order to support the introduction of graphic information processing with WYSIWYG display rendering and print rendering.

  • Manutius -- Type 1 font editor for Windows freely available

The German programmer Dr. A. Gebert has authorized the German TypeForum
website to distribute his Manutius 2.0 for Windows font editor free of
    charge.
Manutius 2.0 was developed 1994-97 by Dr. Gebert but never got much
publicity despite its amazing functionality. The editor used to cost 100
German Marks but since now the product is out of date, the author donated it
    to the website.
The download is ~1.2 MB. The software was developed for Windows 3.1. It
works on Windows 2000/XP but only supports short file names. Also, its user
interface is in German only. It can only edit Type 1 fonts with up to 1000
    glyphs.
However, its drawing interface makes very good impression, and the ability
to display the actual PostScript charstring code along with the graphical
representation make the editor an excellent free companion to Adobe OpenType
    Font Development Kit.
    The download is available at:
    http://www.typeforum.de/modules.php?op=modload&
    name=Downloads&file=index&req=getit&lid=50
    (Please unwrap the URL).

    Hi roxlankford,
Font Book can read PostScript fonts. But, as you've noted, you don't have the whole font. Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but Font Book won't load them. That's not a problem with Font Book itself. No font manager will load outline fonts without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Why does the font used for iTunes show as an outline?

I cannot get the font used for iTunes to change from an outline. I am using Suitcase Fusion and have turned on and off the Office fonts etc.

Try this: Go to Control Panel, Fonts.
On the left pane click "Font settings" > uncehck "Hide fonts based on language settings" > Click "Ok" at the bottom. Restart you computer just to be sure the setting went through. See if that helps.

  • How do I get OT fonts to stop distorting on Web pages (in Internet Explorer)?

I created a great-looking newsletter in Adobe InDesign CS4 (I work for a very large organization and am still waiting for newer software, sorry). It used Adobe OpenType fonts including Myriad Pro, Myriad Pro Black, and Adobe Caslon Pro. I selected "Optimize for web use" when exporting it.  Our Web team then placed the PDF on our web page, using FTP.  When people viewed the PDF in Internet Explorer 9, (again, my organization is slow to change) the fonts either were distorted or did not even look like text.  The same PDF looked fine in Google Chrome and IE 11. In addition to being held at ID CS4 and IE9, we are also at Acrobat Profession version 10.
I did three things to prevent this issue:
I reloaded the old PostScript versions of Myriad (from PageMaker) and Adobe Caslon into the Fonts subfolder of my InDesign application folder, to deal with the body text.
In InDesign, I clicked Edit, selected Transparency Flattener Presets, and created a new preset with the Convert All Text to Outlines box checked (see illustration below),
I created a new PDF Export preset, which compresses images down to 72, 72 and 150 DPI respectively but did NOT check the "Optimize for Fast Web View" box.  I also did NOT check"compress text and line art" in the dialogue box. I temporarily set Compatibility down to Acrobat 4, and then selected the new "textoutline" transparency flattener preset that I made in Step 2. I then reset Compatibility to Acrobat 8 and saved the preset (the transp0arency flattener is now selected but grayed out).
This stopped the distortion. (We continued to use Myriad Pro Black as a headline font). However, PostScript fonts are 20th Century. How can I use Adobe OpenType fonts in the future instead of PostScript fonts?

Still trying to solve the problem. It may be one of my Acrobat job options. Any ideas on how to get Adobe OpenType fonts NOT to pixilate in PDFs created in InDesign CS4 viewed on the Internet in older versions of Internet Explorer?

  • Turn off create font outline

I followed the steps to create a font outline, manipulated the selected font, then moved to a new page-project - I inserted new type - it looks fine at 11 pt, but when I enlarged it, it still has the outline effect - also, the font becomes nothing but a black blob the more I increase the size - seems like the create outline command is still working on a new page.
How do I turn off the create outline command so I can return to regular fonts on new pages?
    thanks
    Bruce

The create outline command is a 1 shot deal. It doesn't stay on or off like a switch, its more of a conversion process. which is applied to only what was selected and then it is done.
Even if the new type on the new page was in outline form, it would not explain what is happening. Outlining simply means that you can no longer edit the text, it is now a path. Since it is a path, it retains its shape and characteristics no matter how much you scale it.
If you rasterise the text, apply a drop shadow or any other raster effect to the text, then those effects would be effected when scaling.
Everything I type above is my best guess for not seeing your screen, which is why Monika requested a screen shot.

  • Outlining Vs Expanding Type

What is the difference between the two outlining and expanding type operations in Illustrator? Does this have to do with retaining the font metrics or hinting?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. The 'Create Outlines' operation from the menu does exactly what Josh says -- it converts the text into it's base form: vectors. You essentially lose all information that would normally have as text (type, size, style, etc.) and get raw vectors in return.
That's what you typically get when you 'expand' specialized artwork, so I'm not sure what you mean when you ask for the difference between 'expanding' and 'outlining'. Can you be more specific? Are we talking about a particular SDK call or enum here?

  • How do I embed multiple font outlines in dynamic text field

Can anyone tell me how I can embed multiple font outlines in
Flash MX so I can get smooth text in a dynamic
text frame? I want to use Regular, bold and italic in various
    parts of the text.
I was using the Character button in the properties manager
and tried to include all Characters. That does not work.
In the Properties manager I can choose Bold and/or Italic.
But it becomes a universal setting that overrides my HTML tags in
my external txt file that I am importing. I dont want all my text
    to be bold.
If I dont select them in the properties, however, Flash will
not embed the font that it needs.
Is there a different way to embed fonts other than under the
    Character Tab?
I tried to import fonts to the library, but can not select
    them.
Your help would really be appreciated.

  • How to change font size for certain domains in Safari

I want to increase the font size for a few websites that have font's sizes I can't read. I already use a CSS file that changes my link colors so I can modify that files if that helps.
Here's a website I need to change http://www.boxofficeguru.com/weekend.htm. Whenever I go to this page I have to increase the font size and when I go to a different site I have to make the font size smaller. Any ideas?

If there are really only a few sites that you have problems with, just go to the site, and click the Command key along with the plus key.    This will temporarily increase the size of the type.
Command and the minus(-)  key makes type smaller.  These commands will work on a per site basis.

  • Value to be entered for Version type while populating metadata into Plannin

    Hi
I have extracted the version dimension from my outline.
Now i need to push it into Planning 11. I have reversed the planning dimension 7 using the version dimension to push value.
After extract, the version type comes under UDA as "Standard bottom up, Public". I split the string into 2 columns as version type & other as UDA.
I mapped the version type column at source to version type (in planning) at target.
On executing the interface, it generated the following error log:
Final Version,Version,,Never Share,,,,Public,Standard Bottom Up,~,Cannot load dimension member, error message is: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid value for field Version Type: Standard Bottom Up.
REV 1,Version,,Never Share,,Release 1,,Public,Standard Bottom Up,~,Cannot load dimension member, error message is: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid value for field Version Type: Standard Bottom Up
What value should be entered for version type??
Moreover if there is any doc/pdf which provide details about the different values that can go into Planning dimensions, please share.
    Thanks in advance

  • How do I change the font color in Live Type?

How can I change the font color in Live Type?

By trial and error, I also learned that the slide icon just to the right of the color box must be moved to the right in order for the new color to be visible. Of course, the amount to which the slide is moved determines the intensity of and color. Thanks for putting me on the right track (no pun intended).

  • Maximum font size for auto-sized form text

You need to let the user select a maximum font size for automatically sized text. If most of your fields are set at 10pt type, but you have one field for which you want the text to resize automatically, it looks stupid if that cell contains a small amount of text that’s set at 16pt or whatever. If you could set the maximum font size to 10pt for that field, then the text would be consistent with the text in the other fields unless there is so much text that it needs to scale down.

    Can anyone please advise?
