Font outlines in ID?

I recently did a layout for a window vinyl (decal) and was thrown back in time when the shop, which drives everything through Corel, needed the fonts converted to outlines.
Fortunately, it wasn't a complex layout and I did it with an export to PDF, import to Illustrator, convert to outlines (tediously) and then resave as PDF. So far, I think that worked for them.
It's not a common need, but is there any simpler way to convert fonts to curves or outlines from an ID document? Or is that a graphics-specific task better done in AI to start with?

Type>create outlines.

  • How do I embed multiple font outlines in dynamic text field

Can anyone tell me how I can embed multiple font outlines in
Flash MX so I can get smooth text in a dynamic
text frame? I want to use Regular, bold and italic in various
    parts of the text.
I was using the Character button in the properties manager
and tried to include all Characters. That does not work.
In the Properties manager I can choose Bold and/or Italic.
But it becomes a universal setting that overrides my HTML tags in
my external txt file that I am importing. I dont want all my text
    to be bold.
If I dont select them in the properties, however, Flash will
not embed the font that it needs.
Is there a different way to embed fonts other than under the
    Character Tab?
I tried to import fonts to the library, but can not select
    them.
Your help would really be appreciated.

  • Turn off create font outline

I followed the steps to create a font outline, manipulated the selected font, then moved to a new page-project - I inserted new type - it looks fine at 11 pt, but when I enlarged it, it still has the outline effect - also, the font becomes nothing but a black blob the more I increase the size - seems like the create outline command is still working on a new page.
How do I turn off the create outline command so I can return to regular fonts on new pages?
    thanks
    Bruce

The create outline command is a 1 shot deal. It doesn't stay on or off like a switch, its more of a conversion process. which is applied to only what was selected and then it is done.
Even if the new type on the new page was in outline form, it would not explain what is happening. Outlining simply means that you can no longer edit the text, it is now a path. Since it is a path, it retains its shape and characteristics no matter how much you scale it.
If you rasterise the text, apply a drop shadow or any other raster effect to the text, then those effects would be effected when scaling.
Everything I type above is my best guess for not seeing your screen, which is why Monika requested a screen shot.

  • Flash CS5.5 - font outlines still get embeded while using runtime sharing

I have a project where I use several SWFs and have the fonts outlines stored into a seperate SWF. Within the .fla file's I have checked the Import for runtime sharing with the various font definitions.
In the library the linkage part shows for every font the Import: classname
To get a correct idea how things look within the IDE, I've checked several character ranges within the font properties so the preview renders correctly.
In Flash CS5 everything was working correctly; no font outline was included within the SWF. The size report also shows this.
When I create the SWF with Flash CS5.5 font outlines of the selected ranges still get embedded into the SWF. The file size of the SWF is much larger and the font outline information shows up in the size report.
Anyone has a solution for this problem?

I've just stepped into the same problem. Quick analysis of SWF content showed that all "import" tags have been removed and replaced by "font" tags (sometimes empty (empty - meaning no glyphs are there), sometimes not). I am publishing SWFs for Flash 8/ AS 2.0, thus, the SWFs should be FULLY compatible with old players. Technically speaking, importing of fonts is totally busted in CS5.5 and makes the CS5.5 completely unusable for us.
Seems VERY much like a nasty bug. I am going to play a bit more with it in order to find a workaround. If not - I'll go back to CS5. I really hope Adobe will fix this bug ASAP. I have submitted a bug report about this issue.
A bit more info about repro the issue: create font.fla and export font $Font from it. Create the second fla (main.fla) that imports the font $Font from  the font.swf. Publish all the swfs. Look inside the main.swf and instead of "ImportAsset" tag for font you'll see the regular "Font" tag (like it was never imported). However, the "ExportAsset" tag exists in font.swf and it looks completely fine.

  • Font Outlines For Distorted Type?

before sending my file to the printer, i would like to outline the document's text to avoid font substitution if the printer doesn't have the font available.
to outline all of my text, i first Select > All on Active Artboard and then choose Type > Create Outlines.  however, there are many areas of text in my document that contain an arc envelope distortion.  these arced text fields were not outlined and i can still reach their editable text field by going down a few layers.
should i also outline the arced type for these fonts incase the printer doesn't have the font available, or was creating an arc distortion the same thing as outlining the text?
the reason i'm asking is because it will take me a very long time to individually process each one of these arced text fields if they, too, should be outlined.

I haven't tried to replicate your issue on my computer but if what your saying is true you should have probably converted to outlines "before" applying the envelope distortion.  I am not sure if you can save the distortion settings as a preset but if you can then it would be a matter of saving the presets for each arc instance, removing the current instance, outlining the text, and then reapplying it.  I know it will take some time but when sending something to the printer you definitely don't want to take chances.
The other option is setting up your preflight options in Acrobat properly so that when you save the Illustrator PDF you will embed all of the fonts and you don't have to worry about outlining the fonts.

  • Create Font Outline

I am working with AI CS version 11.0.0 on a mac powerbook with OS 10.4.11.
I have worked up a postcard using AI and am trying to outline all the fonts. I tried using Type > Create Outlines as well as Effect > Path > Outline Object but both Create Outlines and Outline Object are "grey" (will not respond). I tried changing the font to every kind of font in my font file, but the choices remain "grey".
    What could be wrong?
By the way, I am trying to outline the fonts at the request in order to send the file to an online printer. If I make a PDF of the AI file, do I still need to outline the fonts?

    > Also, I notice when I Save As PDF, if I turn off "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" the PDF file size gets dramatically smaller...
Saving a PDF with that option on actually embeds a complete second version of the file in native Illustrator format inside the PDF. That's why it's larger.
Similarly, if you save an .ai file, and have Acrobat Compatibility turned on, a full second copy of the file, this time in Acrobat format, gets embedded in the file, and again the file is larger.
    > Is there any problem with turning this off?
If you save the PDF with Illustrator editability off, and then open it later with Illustrator, you will find that the native objects have been "dumbed down" to the simpler objects that PDF understands. Live Blends and Brushes will be "expanded" to simple paths, text will be broken into multiple objects, etc., etc.
I save my AI files with Acrobat Compatibility on. That lets me Place them in InDesign. InDesign doesn't really use the .ai content. It uses the PDF content. But if you use the Edit Original command, Illustrator will be launched, the native Illustrator content will be opened, and when you save it, it gets updated in InD.
I almost always save my PDFs with Illustrator Editability off. That's because I don't treat PDF as an editable format (except for PDF forms). If I want a recipient to be able to edit a PDF in Illustrator, I'll not send him a PDF; I'll send him an .ai file.
Adobe's marketing used to promote this scheme with claims like "PDF is now Illustrator's native format." I say that's baloney. The fact that A can contain B does not mean that A equals B. I'm not saying the scheme is useless; I'm just saying the claims were overstated.
Acrobat's format was changed to include a tagged-off area inside of which the authoring program can write its native content. That content is ignored by Acrobat. So, as I understand it, there is nothing preventing CorelDraw or any other program that exports to PDF from similarly embedding its native content in the PDF. (Except maybe licensing fees?) But I'd bet unnecessarily bloated PDF files are now almost as commonplace on the web as oversampled raster images.

  • Cannot extract fonts error message even after fonts outlined

will not allow me to attach screen shot from grab. Image not allowed is error message

Grab saves files to tif format, you need a web format (jpg, png, gif) to post to these format. Rather than grab use preview app.
preview application >> file >> take screen shot >> save as file type png
Now the cannot extract fonts error, could be fixed possibly by an illustrator free update, don't know the verison you are on
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=27&platform=Macintosh
    Reset your illustrator your prefs.
Does this happen to all files, or is this just a certain file. You may have a font in a symbol or opacity mask.
Save a copy of the document, keep deleting items, unitl the error goes away. This will identify the problem item, of which we better help you by narrowing the variables down.
When fo you get thgsi error, upon opening the file?

  • How to trace a font outline?

So, I'm trying to place some text on top of a background.
I have created the text object, but really need it to have a gap between the text and the background.
I duplicated the text and gave the new text a 4pt white outline, and then moved this layer behind the original text.
This gave the look that I was after.
However I need a vector drawing of this (for cutouts in a laser cutter.)
If I convert the text to curves, the vector is still the original outline of the text; it is just drawn with a 4pt line.
I need to be able to trace the outline of the 'fat' text, but I can't figure out how to do that.
Another example of this issue is when I draw a line.
If I draw a line, with a 4pt pen, then I get a long rectangle.
However, if I trace it, I just get a thin line.
I need to be able to trace it and get a rectangle.
    Any ideas?
    Nick.

    Nick,
In the former case, you may, starting with live Type and the background object at the bottom in the stacinkg order:
    1) Type>Create Outlines and Ungroup;
    2) With everything still selected,Object>Path>Offest Path by the desired gap width, and Group, then lock, then Group the original outlined letters, then unlock;
    3) Select the Offset Path Group and
    3a) Also select the background object and in the Transparency palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with both Clip and Invert Mask unticked, this is fully reversible;
    3b) Also select the background object and Pathfinder>Minus front, this is irreversible and creates a Compound Path background object;
3c) Just change the a white fill, or whichever colour you have behind the background object if any.

  • How do I stop outlined fonts in Indesign

I have a customer, requesting a print ready version of their artwork. But they have now come back asking for the fonts to be un-pathed [not outlined].
From what I've read on various forums, it appears that Indesign exports by 'default', fonts outlined in pdfs.
Is there any way I can change the default, and produce a pdf with live text [not outlined]?  Where is the default setting located??

ID most certainly does NOT outline fonts by default. In some cases of transparency flattening fonts may be outlined, but this is only if the flattener settings force it and transparency is actually flattened. The default is to embed fonts.

  • Font Book 2.0.3

I am trying to find out if my Font Book has Crashed. My Illustrator all of a sudden would stop responding, uninstalled it and reinstalled. But I get the following error when I tried to create a PDF:
The font Futura could not be imbedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions. Stroked key will not be visible. It says this about all of the fonts in my document. And they are messed up on the screen also.
In word, it takes forever to load, it seems to stall for awhile when it gets the Font info. And when I look in the drop down menu for the fonts, they are all jumbled on top of each other, and when I scroll down to the bottom, it has weird distortion stuff, nothing that even looks like a font.
A few months back I downloaded Suitcase by Extensis, but after it installed, I had nothing in my drop down menus for my windows, The drop down menu was empty, I did not even have options for shutting down the computer. It was that way in all my program windows. So I used App Zapper to remove it, but there were plug ins left behind in Illustrator & Indesign. So I manually removed them, and the apps seemed to work fine till 3 weeks ago, when I got the Black Screen on my computer. I wasn't even doing anything, I walked away came back and it was there. Took 2 reboots to get it up, but when I went into any app that has font options it would either not load due to not responding, or it would take forever for it to load.
Also, get some kind of weird language on all the Adobe stuff I have installed on here, the screen says it is displaying in English, but it is definitely not English.

Thanx for the reply, although for future reference I prefer warm fuzzy emails, that do not make me want to cry...
Sorry, didn't intend to bring you to tears. It is better to post here though since you may get help from quite a few knowledgeable people.
I am a PC person, so this is my first full time MAC position, which I am not finding rewarding.
This is unusual. Macs are normally very stable. It's hard to tell from here of course what may have led to so much trouble. I still think your first best bet is an Archive and Install. Find the gray OS X installation disk that came with your Mac. If the copy of Tiger you have installed is a retail disk (black with a silver X on it), use that.
For safety's sake, you should first create a backup of your hard drive to an external, or other internal drive if you have one.
Insert the OS X installation disk in your drive. A window will appear for it when it mounts. Double click the icon to install OS X. The Mac will reboot to the CD/DVD for you. When it's ready, you'll first get the option of which language to use. Continue to the next screen. I can't remember how quickly the option you need comes up, but I think it's after which hard drive you choose to install OS X to. Anyway, look for a button that brings up a choice as to how OS X is installed. You'll find a choice for Archive and Install. Make sure to also select the option to preserve your settings and preferences. Continue with the installation.
When it's done, you'll have fresh install os OS X on the hard drive. Apply all available updates. You'll also find a folder marked Previous System. That's everything the Archive and Install replaced. You can trash that. That will take care of any problems with the OS itself.
I had Illustrator loaded previously, using all of the same fonts, embedding all fonts, including Futura, and this is the first time I ever saw this message. I do not have this message is InDesign, instead I get "You might not be able to print w/.... or stroke its characters because the fonts outline file is missing". And then when I go to PDF it says it could not embed the fonts due to the missing "Outline File". What the heck is an "Outline File"???? And how do I get one?
Ah, so the Illustrator message is probably incorrect. On the PC, I'm sure you're aware that a Type 1 PostScript font is made up of two files for each type face. One with a .pfm extension, and the other with .pfb. Mac Type 1 PostScript fonts are made up of two parts. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts from a Type 1 PostScript font without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.
So in your case, you have the suitcase of bitmap screen fonts, but not the vector outline font for the typeface you're using. Hence the message, "...because the fonts outline file is missing". Since so many of the fonts you're trying to use won't embed, you probably only have the screen fonts for all of them.

  • Embedding fonts in document

I work for a Printing Display company. Illustrator CS3 allows you to embedd subset fonts only with permission bits available. The problem I'm having is some of our big customers do not want to send copies of the fonts they paid for. They save the file as a PDF with the fonts embedded so that they will view and print from either Acrobat or Reader. If I open the file in Illustrator I get a "Font missing" warning. What is the work around for this? The reason I need to open these files in a Graphics App is because we need to use our templates in order to edit colors and bleeds and such. Without the fonts it's pretty much useless. We could tell the customer to just outline all text but this is a hassle for all kinds of reasons. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Paul,
When you open a PDF in Illy, all text is made Live Type, using the same font. If it is not accessible on your machine, Illy substitutes another font based on her best guess for a best match.
The option of having embedded fonts outlined and thereby turned into non (textwise) editable vector objects, very useful in many cases without need for modifying wording, has long been wished. I am afraid this wish has not been met yet; maybe it will happen in CS5, or later, or never.
Those PDFs without issues only hold fonts that you have.
I thought I remembered that there was a cunning roundabout way of obtaining this, and here it is, at least for versions from CS2 on:
    1) File>New to open a new blank document;
    2) File>Place the PDF, ticking the Link option;
    3) Object>Flatten Transparency, ticking Convert All Text to Outlines option if applicable (flattening causes outlining at least in 10).

  • Fonts Not Compatible with Windows 8

We've had some problems with fonts not working in Windows 8. Are all OTF available via Adobe Type campatible? The files we're having problems with have the extension of .PFB. They are visble via c:Windows/Fonts but do not work in our applications.

Windows 8 (as well as Windows Vista and Windows 7) should be fully compatible with all Adobe OTF (OpenType) fonts as well as Type 1 fonts.
Note that Type 1 fonts require two files per font, the .PFB file with the fonts' outlines and the .PFM file with the fonts' metrics. Such fonts are installed by right-clicking the .PFM file and selecting Install. Note that the .PFB file must be in the same directory as the .PFM file for the installation to work.
Assuming that you have the fonts already installed, they should work with all classic Windows applications. However the Type 1 fonts are not recognized by Windows WPF applications as well as those explicility written for Windows 8's  new so-called modern application interface. Applications such as Visio have not supported Type 1 fonts in years. We also know that a bug in Windows causes Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 to hang if they call for a font that has the same name as a Type 1 font you have installed.
Perhaps you provide more information about what fonts you have installed with what applications that don't work or are not recognized?

FHMX will refuse to show fonts in the font menu if it finds
    any corruption
in the font. This is to prevent crashes when font outlines
    are accessed.
I suggest you delete your current copy of the font and
    reinstall it from
