Font panel broken in Pages 5.5, makes Pages unusable

The font panel in Pages 5.5 on Yosemite is broken. More specifically, I am unable to choose small capitals, alternates, or other variations of fonts in the Typography panel. Choosing so does not influence the text selected in Pages. Moreover, if the Typography panel is already open, selecting some new text in Pages results in an almost empty Typography panel.
All this works properly in TextEdit. Too bad Pages is now totally unusable for creating well-designed documents.
This is what the panel can do in TextEdit (this is Adobe Garamond Pro, but these options are available in many fonts like Hoefler, preinstalled with Mac OS X). Go and try to repeat this in Pages.
Anybody having the same problem here?

iWork, especially Pages, has been given a lobotomy. Lack of Typography options is one of 100 features that Pages 4.3 had that Pages 5.5 doesn't. Pages 5.5 also doesn;t have:
-mail merege
-bookmarks
-interdocument hyeprlinks
-non-contiguous selection
-robust autocorrection
-advanced find/replace
-text box linking
-facing pages
-ability to have alternating right/left margins
- staus bar so you can see word count/page count without obscuring part of your text
etc, etc etc

I like Pages very much, but I have some questions:
1) The names of some fonts (True Type and post script type 1) are invisible or indeciferable in the font panel family column. How to make the name of font visible?
2) How can one remove a font from "Favorites" in the "collection" column; I do not want to remove the font from my system, just from the "favorites" folder?

1) In your folder "Applications" there is an app named "Fontbook". Start this and select the menu item "File/Check Font" (or what sound similar; it is the 3rd item). See, if the font is ok (or you can first let Fontbook show you the font info: "Preview/Show Font Info"). If not, LinoType has a free font tool called FontExplorerX at http://www.linotype.com/2104-2493-2104/fontexplorerx.html. With this, you can check and repair fonts. Eventually, this can help to solve your problem.
2) To remove a favorite, grab it with the mouse and drop it outside the font panel. That's it.

How to make pages page horizontally in acrobat

Hi there.
Is there a way in Acrobat to make pages page horizontally? Similar to an ‘island spread’ in indesign! I need to view a series of pages horizontally, as this will best simulate the way that I will be presenting these pages when pinned up...

Depends on how you set up your ID file. If you have set up your document as 11 x 8.5 (horizontal/landscape) the resulting pdf exported sould be the same. If you have an 8.5 x 11 Document, Portrait, the exported pdf should be likewise portait.
If you printed to PDF Printer (and you should have exported instead) these results could be overridden by the page orientation.
If you have an Acrobat file, whose pages need to be rotated permanately, not just for a particular view instance, rotate them from the Acrobat Navigation Pages Panel.

How do i get the fonts panel to stay there?

hi all
i like to have the fonts panel in Pages visable while working on a document as I change fonts regularly in some running documents
but when i close pages and reopen it, the fonts panel doesn't stay there like the inspector does, so i have to reopen it every time i open pages
its not a big problem, but just annoying
any suggestions?

It's a known bug. In addition to the font panel, Pages forgets window position and other components of the saved state upon quitting. I don't think there's anything that can be done about it.

I have a whole history serch panel on the left side of my page, and I don't want it, and can't get rid of it!

I got this history search panel on the left side of my pages on Mozilla Firefox after downloading the latest updates today. I can't click on it, drag it, or otherwise get it to do anything.....Help!

You can toggle the History side panel off/on with "Ctrl+H"
The History sidebar work for me if you change the View in the side panel to "By Last Visited".
The sidebars can be accessed or removed through the View (menu) > Toolbars, by clicking on a sidebar to use/replace/drop only one toolbar can be shown at time.
If you don't see the view menu, use the "Alt" key (or "F10")

The referenced link deals with a different matter; the user wanted a blank tab to open but was getting an arbitrary page opening instead.

Font Panel not available?

The Font Panel refuses to open & it is going back & forth on my document with Helvetica (which I never chose) & Times New Roman, which I did choose. I am completing copies of a manuscript to try to get publishied and I need to open the Font Panel, which I've never seen, except in a small pop-up menu, which opens & closes indiscriminatively & is no help at all! Without this panel, Pages is screwing up my manuscript. Thanks for some good techie help.

Thank you so much for your good suggestions. My daughter, who is a PC specialist came home
to find me struggling, sat down & discovered the Font Panel had appeared for me, but had hidden on the right side of the screen under the dock (where I also hide my Mail window! So it was a freak problem. Anyway I also found the panel in TextEdit, just for a test. If I had waited, I would not
have posted.
But I want to tell you both, that the Discussion grouo techies have been invaluable to me and I want to thank everybody who helps Mac users for participating in a life-saving organization. I have had OS X.5.8 & Pages for about a year--Pages has been my Jonah, and too darn complicated for writers like me!

Use of Favorites Collection in the Font Panel

I make frequent presentations in PowerPoint (Office X). Normally I only use 3 or 4 fonts. To change fonts I must scroll through a long list of installed fonts. I "discovered" the Font Panel and special collections one can prepare, such as Favorites. I have made a Favorites collection with those fonts I use. My question is, how do I make use of my Favorites Collection when I am in PowerPoint so that I can avoid those interminable scrolling sessions?

actually - I just found out on another thread that perhaps "file path" was never on the information panel anyway. I wonder if I am confusing it with the info panel I see in iphoto library Manager.
And I just hovered my mouse over the "at the beach" file name in the information panel, and discovered the origianal file name showed up. And if you hover your mouse of the date, you see "taken, modified and and imported".
Still wish I could see the file path, but now wondering if I ever did in iPhoto. But hope this reply of my own helps others that may be wondering where some of the stuff went.

I'm using the same font in all my pages but one particular page is blurring and substituting other text.

I'm using Handwriting-Dakota font, which I found out is quite temperamental. I did what someone on here suggested and went to Preferences>Show text imaging indicator. and that fixed all my problems. Now I added a page and the text is all messed up, blurred and stretched sometimes and other times substitutes other text on the page for that box.
I haven't done anything different on this page and even deleted it and started over again but now it's worse than before. This is the only page that is doing this so I'm not sure what to do.

Do a Command A on the page to make sure that the text images and the other images are not overlapping or touching.
You do realize that by turning all your text into images the search engines will see your website as having virtualy zero content with nothing for them to index?
Try to use web safe fonts for the descriptive text and save the images for special occasions like one heading per page or the header.

Changing font/-size of a text field on master-pages not possible? (field prop)

I would like to change the font and font-size of a textfield on a master page.
I wonder if I do anything wrong, because the font-options (size, font etc.) are simple greyed out / not avaliable, when I click on my text field.
It seems, there is any way to customize the font-properties of a textfield (only) on master-page.
Well I guess it would work with java script in init-event ... but really, why the hell it should not be possible simply to use the properties/text properties?!
Please correct me if I am wrong. Do I do anything wrong or is it really not possible to customize font of a text field on master pages?

I was just about to post, that I figured it out.
Actually, I use Livecycle Designer in SAP (transaction SFP). There seems to be a bug (one of hundrets by the way).
If I click on a field, that does not have text-property e.g. subform, text-option menu greys out.
Afterwards it stay this way until I click/doubleclick into a simple text (not text field). From that moment on, text/font-option menu is available again, until I click on something without text. => So pay attention and click wisely

by the way: SAP does not sopport interactive forms higher than Reader 8.1. Its statement "8.1 is fine enough for everything you need in a SAP/Adobe Interactive Form". So beware of using XFA higher than in 8.1. sad, but true ...

I've managed to get back to Pages 4.3 and delete the downgrade Pages 5, which makes a total mess of any doc prepared with it, but how to I get back to the old version of Pages on my iPad so that I can work while I am away from home.

What is really irritating is that Apple give a big hurray about what they have added as "new" in Pages 5 (most of it pretty useless) without telling you of the myriad things they have deleted. If they had shown the list your gave the link to, I doubt may regular users would risked going to Mavericks with its auto upgrade. My partner got the message in time and is sticking with the earlier operating systems and Pages on Mac and iPad. Lucky girl.
I have found a way to use my iPad to add chapters written while on the move to reports on my iMac Pages 4.3. If I write it on the new Pages on the iMac (don't seem to be able to revert there), the send the report as an email in WORD format (not Pages) and download it in the Text Editor, then cut and paste into the story on the iMac. Hardly elegant but it works.

How do I make page borders on Pages?

Can anyone explain to me how to make page borders on the Pages program? I typed it into help, but it only told me how to make borders for paragraphs. In Word it was under "Format" Borders adn there were lots of choices of great borders there - both lines and graphics.
I have a mutli-page document and want a nice looking border that will automatically put itself onto all the pages in the document.

There is no command to place a border on a page. However, it is quite easy to draw a border. Set your margins and then resize the Pages document window so you can see the entire page. Under the view menu, select 'Show Layout' and 'Show Rulers'. Now insert a rectangle or rounded rectangle shape, resize and move it as you like. Open the inspector and select the Graphics tab. Select the background and line colors, etc. Under the Arrange menu, select 'Send Objects to Background' and you'll probably also want to select 'Lock'. You might also want to capture the page (Format > Advanced > Capture) if you intend to make a multi-page document.
Yes, this is a bit more involved than Word but it isn't that big a deal. I've created a template with about 10 different border styles and I pull it out whenever I need it.

How to make shapes appear behind page header/footer in Pages '09

In a Pages (v4.0.2) page layout document, I'm trying to make a gradient as the page background. Since there's no built-in way to do this (as far as my googling shows), I've tried what others have suggested:
1. Create a new shape and resize it so it fills the entire page
2. Go to Arrange > Send to Back
3. There's no step three!
This work great for most of the page. However, the page header and footer are always hidden by the shape, and I can't find a way to get them to lay +in front+ of the shape. How can I get the background shape behind the header & footer?

How do you make pages default document reader

Hi
I have just started using pages and i cant seem to work out how to make it the default application to open up the many documents i have.
Every time i open a document it opens in textedit, i know that you can choose in properties with which program to open it with, but i am getting really fed up of doing this.
is there any way to make pages the default instead of textedit program.

p.s I used to use MS office but i cant be bothered to reinstall it and most of my docs are .doc (office format)

You can set .doc files to open in Pages, and its surprisingly easy: just go to the Finder, single-click on any .doc file, then type command-I (Get Info). Click on the Open With... menu and select Pages (or navigate to Pages if it's not in the menu). To make all .doc files open in Pages, click on the Change All button.
You can do the same thing with other types of files, like RTF or plain text.
