Font problem in snow leopard

Question

Up until I installed snow leopard I had access to a whole range of helvetica fonts.
When I installed snow leopard I was prompted about a conflict which I opted to choose "resolve".
After this I no longer had access to these fonts.
I attempted to reopen them with font book and they show no conflicts, yet I can't choose them as they are not visible.
I rebooted both the computer and quarkxpress 8 and still do not see them, yet they are visible in font book menu. (click on link)
Can someone please guide me so that I can get my fonts back?
I seem to recall they were marked as postscript fonts.
I know very little about using font book, so please give me step by step if possible.
Your advice is appreciated.

Hellol Frank,
Most of what you write about is for user who open and close fonts, I leave mine open all time, does that make a difference?
Regardless of a person's preference of having fonts open or closed, Apple's versions of Helvetica are preventing you from opening the versions of Helvetica you require because they conflict. Font Book absolutely will not let deactivate Apple's fonts (nor will any other font manager). To use your Helvetica fonts, you must manually remove Apple's versions.
I show the following fonts in my System>Library>Fonts folder:
HelveL TMM
Helvetica LT MM
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.ttc
The Multiple Master fonts are fine. It's Helvetica.dfont and HelveticaNeue.ttc that are preventing you from opening your preferred versions of these fonts.
Do I undertand that I should drag these out of the folder, or do I delete them in some other way?
As noted in the article, you must do this in two places. First remove Helvetica.dfont and HelveticaNeue.ttc from the ProtectedFonts folder. If you don't do that, OS X immediately copies certain fonts from the ProtectedFonts folder if you try to remove them from /System/Library/Fonts/ folder.
Once the fonts are gone from the ProtectedFonts folder, you'll be able to permanently remove them from the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. Once in the trash, restart the Mac and you should be able to use any version of Helvetica you want.
Also noted in the article, make copies of Apple's versions somewhere else first. Then you'll be able to activate them like any other font with your font manager. The rules against having more than one version of Helvetica active still applies though. You can't have Apple's fonts and any other like version of Helvetica active at the same time regardless of their location on the hard drive.
