Font substitution: Arial Unicode for Arial

We use Arial font for headlines, but InDesign consistently (always) changes Arial into Arial Unicode when I place copy from WORD. It leaves Times New Roman alone, and also other forms of Arial, such as Arial Black are OK. Just Arial has the problem. How do I permanently get it to run Arial? Thanks in advance, Cliff Moore

If you have a font manager (I'm guessing you don't), you can just turn fonts on and off. Without one, you have to remove fonts from Windows (Start>Control Panel>Fonts), but make sure you have a copy of the file before removing anything.
However, the fact that it is Arial Greek may mean the problem is something else and not a simple case of two Arials being active at the same time. Do you get a missing font message in ID?

  • Arial Unicode font for Tamil, etc.?

Looking for some style alternatives to the InaiMathi font included in OS X for the Tamil language, I noted at the the Gallery of Unicode Fonts that the Arial Unicode font includes Tamil characters, and remembered that that font is now included with OS X (10.5). I checked with Character Palette and indeed the Tamil characters are there, but they aren't recognized as equivalent to those in InaiMathi. And when I try to change some Tamil words in a document from InaiMathi to Arial Unicode, nothing happens.
I don't understand a lot about Unicode, but I know the Arial Unicode font has been around for a while (it was more or less the original effort to create a single Unicode font including all the major alphabetic scripts), and don't understand why it would contain the Tamil character set but not work for that script. It doesn't seem to work for Tibetan either, though it contains that character set as well. In fact, according to Character Palette, it seems about 90% of Arial Unicode is "character variants" that "won't display correctly". What's it for, then, anyone have any idea?

+I have always thought Windows fonts cannot be used for display. Could you describe how you use Character Palette to do that?+
Well, not "display" in the sense of opening a file using an OpenType font on the Mac and seeing it display properly. What I do in Character Palette with an OpenType font like Sanskrit2003 is scroll through the font to find the elements I want and double-click them to enter them in a document. Of course this workaround is feasible only for the occasional word, not for whole sentences or paragraphs. I'm not a big time user of any of this, so I can manage for the occasional word I want.
+The reason they do this is because a lot of documents and web pages could specify Arial in them and users would get the idea that OS X does not support Devanagari, Tamil, Tibetan, etc unless they switch the font, which is impossible in Safari.+
Yeah, I can see the reason; but wouldn't it be easier in the long run to just enable OpenType fonts so everyone can use the same fonts? And it is annoying that you can't specify fonts in Safari like in Camino.
+I agree, but have doubts this will happen soon. Perhaps more likely is an app like Mellel which does OpenType could be expanded to cover these scripts.+
Several years ago the developer of Mellel assured me that v.2 would support Indic scripts. But it never happened.
+In the meantime, OpenOffice/X11 does work for display I think.+
Yes, OpenType fonts can be used in OpenOffice/X11 (which is no longer being developed, BTW, now that there's a native OS X version). But not AAT fonts.

Indeed, though much of it is over my head. I just want to be able to use the same fonts for Indic languages as everyone else, just as I can in Chinese, etc.

  • Arial font substitution for (LabVIEW for) Linux

    Hello,
as LabVIEW was not capable of keeping the font size and spacing constant when running a VI under different Windows versions, screen resolutions etc, I have never used the "application", "system" and "dialog" font options in LabVIEW but have fixed all fonts to Arial 14 pt. This worked wonderful on all Windows systems - without that unnerving problem that control lables overwrite each other and things like that (what always happened when using LabVIEWs "application" font option).
Now, when running the same VIs under LabVIEW for Linux, the font looks terrible, as there is no Arial font in Linux. Does somebody know an easy way to solve this problem without setting all fonts to "application font" in LabVIEW? For instance, any "ini file type" setting in Linux telling the operating system which font to use when Arial is not present, or any free font substitution that we could add to our installer routine that the operating system would use automatically instead of Arial?
    Best regards,
    Gabs

Unfortunately, your problem is a version of a generic problem faced by GUI programmers of all types - how do you handle varying system fonts?  There are various solutions, based on who your customers are.  You are using one of the easy ones that works well until you start doing cross-platform development.  The main options are, in order or increasing complexity:
Lock the font to a specific font and size.  This works well if your customers are limited to a single platform and are not visually impaired (do not want to use large fonts).
Use system fonts and allow extra space.  This is a compromise that only works in most cases.  Use about 50% extra for small strings and 10% - 20% for larger strings.  This also gives you extra space for localization, should you need it.  Visually impaired customers will run into space issues, because large fonts can be 2X or more larger than the default, system fonts.  Note that the different Windows variants have different font sizes as well.  Windows Vista increased default font sizes, especially for some Asian languages, such as Japanese.
Query the font size on entry into a GUI VI and rescale everything appropriately.  This is hard, since it must be done for every VI with a GUI.  Some system dialogs do not handle large fonts well, so you will probably end up replacing them with your own versions to get good appearance.  You could probably write a system to handle this sort of scaling, but to my knowledge, no one has (please prove me wrong ).  I have always used custom code when needed.
No one really does this well.  Change your system font on a Windows OS to large fonts and note all the problems you run into.  I would recommend option 2, unless you have a lot of extra time.  Your customers will love you if you pull off option 3.
    More tips to help.
Do your development on the platform with the largest system fonts.  If this is not possible, change the LabVIEW system fonts of your development system to match the largest size you support.  I usually develop using 13pt Verdana, since it is one of the largest of the variable spaced fonts.
Check your work by using large fonts in Windows.  If it looks good there, it will probably be OK for most uses.
    Good luck!

  • Arial Unicode MS font doesn't appear in PhotoShop CS5 for MAC

Hello,  I'm having a problem with Arial Unicode MS font in MAC. The other apps such as TextEdit, Pixelmator... can see the font but not PhotoShop CS5 and the other apps in the CS5 suite (Flash, Illustrator...)
Does anyone have the same problem with me? Could you help me to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,

Check the entire font menu, all the way to the bottom.  The font may not be in the alphabetical order you expect, but towards the end of the list, among the Asian fonts or so.

  • Arial Bold Unwanted Font Substitution

When I make a PDF from a Word file using Acrobat 9 Standard, the Arial Bold font gets substituted regardless of the font embedding settings. With other PDF creation methods, this does not happen, but I need it to work with Acrobat for some of the features. It is really annoying that the one product I have that is not free does this, when there are other ways of creating PDFs for free that do not do this annoying font substitution. I have observed that this also happened to another user on another machine.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
(Using Windows 7. This also happened previously in Windows XP.)

I do not have a font that is actually called Arial MT on my computer. In some applications, it is referred to as such, for reasons I don't know. I do have Arial Unicode MS and Arial Rounded MT Bold, which I tried deleting from the Fonts directory, and I got excited there for a minute, but I actually got the same result again.
A few interesting things to mention:
    - When I use the touchup text tool in Acrobat, and I open the properties of the substituted text, it tells me that the font is substituted because the original font is not available. However, I am then able to change the text to Arial Bold, because Arial bold is on my computer! It seems to be looking for a font with a different name, for some reason.
    - I once did a search and replace in Word, replacing all Arial bold with Arial, and then made a PDF. All of my replacement Arial text was still bold but emerged unharmed int he PDF. I thought I had my solution then but the problem is that I cannot search and replace certain items, such as the numbers in my numbered lists. Changing those is a sort of Pandora's box.

  • Arial Unicode MS font not viewable in Adobe Reader 9

I have created a form in Acrobat Acrobat X Pro which has some labels in Arial Unicode MS font and when i view the form in Reader 9, I'm not able to view the labels. I have Arial Unicode MS font installed on my machine. What could be the problem?
                                                                                                               Robin

The use of the Arial Unicode font may seem a simple way to get things done, but in fact this needs enormous care and testing. It will need at least some of the far eastern language packs installed, probably Korean.
For example, the font will need to be installed on each computer where the form is to be filled. This is not a free font, you cannot even buy it, but it comes with Microsoft Office. So only people who have purchased Office will have the font.
I would recommend using a Punjabi font. This should be a properly encoded Unicode font, one which works only on copies of Windows with Punjabi support NOT a "trick" font to work on Western Windows. Even so, Acrobat's support for languages outside western and the "big four" far eastern languages (Chinese x 2, Korean, Japanese) might not be sufficient.

  • Wrapping but truncating in WEBI with Arial Unicode MS font(Bold only)

    hi,
My Webi XI R3 report should support Localization.
So we chose 'Arial Unicode MS' as standard font which can support single-byte as well as multi-byte languages.
In webi report, Column headers are BOLD where as column values are REGULAR.
We selected the options 1) Autofit height  2) Wrap Text for all Column headers and values.
When we change the browser locale to other languages like French and Japanese, Column values appear fine(Wrapping without truncation) as they are Regular. But Column Headers(BOLD) are wrapping with edge characters being truncated. (Observed in Infoview, IE8 browser)
When we make column headers to REGULAR, issue won't occur. But it's mandatory for us to keep column headers BOLD.
How to preserve the column headers[without truncation of border character] keeping them Arial Unicode MS BOLD?
Also, there is an inconsistency behavior for japanese as well as french locales.
    Thanks,
    Vamsee

  • Flash CS5 giving me headaches No Bold style for Arial Unicode MS

    Hi,
We recently upgraded to Flash CS5 and now are facing a lot of problems.
I created a static textfield on Stage with publish settings Flash player6 As1.0
I selected the settings as shown in attached screenshot.
The problem is I can't select Bold from styles as it is greyed out. However this work fine in Adobe Flash CS3.
Anyone knows what I may be doing wrong

    Hi,
I think this is nothing to do with Flash CS5 but with the font availability in your system. If the font doesn't have bold, italic variants of the font then the Style combo box becomes grayed out as there is no corresponding glyphs available for that. Normally Arial Unicode MS font doesn't have its Bold variant. Some word processor applications (eg MS Word) may do that by just thickening the available glyphs instead of using the actual bold glyphs from the Font which is incorrect.
    Thanks!

  • Arial Unicode Arabic text in Flash CS4

    Hi,
I am facing a strange issue. I have a flash file where Arabic text is written using Arial Unicode MS and is displayed properly, but when i try to update the text field with new arabic content, the words split up into characters.
The image below shows the issue:  Both original as well new content is in the same text field but they are displayed differently.
Please suggest as to what should be the possible solution for this. P.S. I cannot change the font family, it has to be Arial unicode MS.
    Thanks,
    Ayush

As far as I know the TLFTextField is the only class currently provided for native support of right to left text.  It is only supported by players that were developed concurrent with its arrival, which might account for some not seeing what they expect.  From what I have heard there are discrepancies with its performance as well, wherein if you do not need to use it, stick with the classic TextField.

  • How to embed Arial Unicode MS in Fla file

    Hi
I am new to Flash development hence some of the comments/queries might seem very trivial.
I am working on the flash file which was originally developed for English language. Now client would like to extend it to other languages such as Janpanese, Hindi etc.
Flash component is developed in Windows operating system and CS3 is being used for development.
The flash consists of a movie clip control which shows characters read from external source. Text to displayed is assigned to "htmlText" property.
The fla has embedded a custom font file. The font file customized to replace two glyphs (@ and ?) with gif file. Based on certain condition, "@" and "?" are rendered using custom font
    for example.
    if (condition == true)
    then
        movieClip.htmlText =  <font face="CustomFont">U0040</font> + {Rest of the text}
Under Text->Font Embedding... dialog box, Character Ranges options has "All glyphs" and "Punctuations"
Under Also include characters --> "@?" are included.
When I try to embed Arial Unicode MS font, None of the unicode characters are displayed. Only custom font character is displayed.
When change the font embedding settings for custom font and remove option "All glyphs" and "Punctuations" and also remove "@?" from "Also include characters"
then unicode characters are displayed by custom font U0004 is not replaced with custom font.
Another observation is: If I install fonts in system then it works fine. But that is not expected behavior end users will not have custom font in their system, neither can I ask them to install.
Can anyone please guide me on this issue?
    Regards,
    RK

    Hi,
What do you mean in "want to embed the font "Arial Unicode MS""?
Do you want to hard code font in UIX code?
    Thanks
