Font substitution for Times New Roman? Why is Adobe doing this?

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro version 9.2 to read pdfs created by a number of different authors. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit OS. These are NOT pdfs I have created. Some of these pdfs display an incorrect font substitution for Times New Roman and I can't figure out why. In the File/Properties dialog the font property comes up as Times New Roman, True Type, ANSI encoding (Times New Roman has spaces between the words). This font is not embedded. Adobe Sans MM is the font that my Adobe 9.2 substitutes for it, even though I have a true type Times New Roman already installed in Windows.I have installed all updates for both Acrobat and for Windows. If I select the text touch up tool to look at the text, a box comes up saying that the original font is not available and a substitute font will be used. When I look at the drop down box for fonts in Adobe, I see among all of the various fonts available, TimesNewRoman without spaces, but no Times New Roman with spaces. Does this matter?
When I go to my Windows Control Panel Fonts screen, I see a Times New Roman truetype font available (with spaces, the same as the font the document is requesting). It says OpenType Layout, Digitally Signed, TrueTyepe Outliers. I use it all the time.
What is required to get Adobe 9 to display this font? It looks like the document is asking for the font I have available on the system and Adobe 9 Pro just isn't identifying it. These same pdfs display just fine on Adobe Acrobat Standard 7.0 on another Windows 7 64 bit OS machine. Is there a separate font library that Adobe has independent of the Windows font library and I simply don't have a complete set of fonts for my version? I don't have the option to have the authors recreate their documents. And they display just fine on an older version of Adobe on a different machine.
UPDATE: Adobe 9 required more than one update. I did the 300 mb update and the problem described above was still there. I checked again just now for updates, and there was another one. This one, whatever it was, fixed the font substitution problem. So the moral of the story is... update, then update again, and keep doing it until there are no more. Adobe doesn't say "there are xx updates available." You just have to keep on asking for them until it says 'no'.

The font Radioactive is the problem. It has an incorrect internal name that conflicts with Times New Roman. Delete Radioactive and ban it from any Mac you use.

So my wife calls me and says "everytime I open facebook or twitter a message pops up and ask's for my Apple ID. Do you think I have been Hacked?" I answered truthfully, "I have no idea".  So my questions is has anyone else out there run acress this issue where it keeps asking for you apple idea? And could this be a hack? what should I tell her to do? Could it be becasue she has not updated? She is still running the OS 5.

    Do two things:
    1.  In Settings > iTunes & App Stores, turn off automatic downloads for Apps.
    2.  Assuming you sync using iTunes, turn off the automatic app syncing on the App tab when you have the iPads connected that should not receive the downloads.

  • Unable to generate Pdf report for crystal 9/10  in Windows 2012 (Standard) server with Times New Roman font. With same font, report getting generated in excel, text, csv format in Windows 2012.

For Times New Roman font in Windows server 2012 R2 (Standard), crystal 9/10 report in pdf format is not getting generated. When we change the font for specific report like Arial, Calibri , Cambria then pdf report getting created.
In Windows 2008 R2, same application worked fine to generate pdf report for TimesNewRoman font and there is no change done in the application which is being used in Windows 2012 R2 server.

Ok, thanks for the reply. You need to contact support or a forum for the Crystal software. Third party products don't usually include Adobe technology, they have their own software. When you contact them, you may want to expand "unable to generate" to give any specific symptoms including any error messages.

  • Default font and size for office mac O8. I prefer Times New Roman, size 12

I have OS 10 and Word Office Mac : 2008. I prefer using generally Times New Roman, size 12 but sometimes for some applications something called Calumbria (spelling?) comes up ... and then I have to search for in the long list for Times New Roman.
95 % of the time Times New Roman comes up and I it is fine but sometimes with new documents then I get this Calumbria thing that I don't want. Any help would be most appreciated. I hope my question makes sense.

  • Times and Times New Roman Do not display the same with ADE pdf reader

    Anyone an idea why?
(These fonts display the same with MS word and Adobe Acrobate reader)

That looks like a grunged version of Times New Roman. You probably have this font installed, and it's likely conflicting with the standard Times New Roman font.

  • Installed Office 2011, now Times New Roman is whacked in Pages '09

I finally had to cave in and install Office 2011 to edit a complex docx that was sent to me. But now all the Times New Roman font in all of my Pages documents have morphed into a very ugly spaced-out mess. Is there any way to return my files to their previous format?

thanks for the tip. I seem to have fixed the problem in the documents, but it was not what you thought. There was only 1 Times New Roman in the font book. I right-clicked on it and now all my text is OK (I have no idea what I did, except the font list flashed to Calibri, what Word 2011 is using as a default). BUT, both before and after this fix, the listing for Times New Roman in the font book appears as a bunch of pictographs of symbol keys. My main problem is solved (for now...), but I am not declaring the question answered until the font list weirdness is gone.

  • KDE: After new font install Times New Roman lags/crashes OpenOffice

    Hallo all,
This problem has been troubling me since I first switched to Linux with Open Suse a couple years back. I got around it on Kubuntu without installing new fonts...
But the other day I decided to give it a go, thinking it might be a bug in KDE3 that was fixed in 4. So I installed a ton of fonts for Photoshopping and now, just like the first time, Times New Roman looks ugly in OpenOffice and if I'm trying to open a document that's .doc or .rtf and written in Times it lags Writer and typically crashes instead of opening. This is a problem since friends send me stuff all the time and they are Windows users.
Strangely if I print with Times it looks like it's supposed to but otherwise it's ugly. It looks this way in KOffice, too. I'm not so much concerned with that as I am with the lagging and crashing Writer, though.
If this is a bug then it must be pretty old. Has anyone else encountered this before?
The Defaults button is also grayed out in the KDE Font Installer. Anyone know why? If I can just revert to default with fonts then I will.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply!
I have installed the MS fonts. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. This problem only started when I installed a bunch of new fonts that I've collected over the years for Photoshopping.
Using the replacement thing doesn't work, either; whenever I open a Times New Roman doc the font is still the same. It only freezes or crashes for really long documents but that's still a problem for me. Also it looks really ugly.
I'd honestly be fine if I could just restore the defaults but the Defaults button is grayed out in the font installer
I only assume that that would fix it, though. I think the problem is that one of the fonts I installed messed up Times New Roman. The problem is that I've got hundreds of em and I don't know which ones are mine and which ones came with KDE/MS fonts.

  • The times new roman font is wider set on some of my document compared to others

I am writing multiple essays right now, yay college, in iwork Pages.  On one of them, the font has more space in between the letters and on the other is is more narrow set.  I have the same font settings (Times New Roman, regular and double spaced) for both of my documents so I can't figure out why the fonts look different.  they have about the same number of words and yet one of them is longer by almost half a page.  I like the way the wider-spaced font looks so I'm trying to figure out how to make the narrow spaced font  in one essay look like the wider spaced font in in the other essay.
    Can anyone help? :/

Check in Font Book whether you have 2 versions of Times New Roman installed, you may have got a second from an installation of MsWord.
Is one of the documents perhaps converted from a Word .doc?
    Also check:
    Inspector > Text > Text > Spacing > Character

  • RH7: Project only showing Times New Roman in fonts dropdown

    Hi,
I'm having trouble with a project that was just fine a few weeks ago. At the moment, the only option in the font selection dropdown is "Times New Roman"... a lovely font, but we write our documentation in Arial, so we kinda need that At the moment we can't select any other font for our documents, only TNR.
I'm not very experienced with RH, but I have checked the stylesheet (seems linked correctly and the contents are the same as the stylesheets for the projects that don't have any problems), the templates seem ok too... I'm stumped.
Other things that are happening (seemingly at random):
    - new topics are created without an associated stylesheet
    - new topics have TNR size 12 as default font (our templates have Arial 9)
    - old topics open without a stylesheet; adding in the required HTML code for the stylesheet doesn't seem to help.
All these happened on my coworker's PC, I can't replicate them on mine. Either way, on both our PCs the only font showing is TNR.
This might be important: the projects were recently added to Robo SourceControl. Can this be related to that?
I'd appreciate any help, especially since we've got a big release coming up next week and all documentation needs to be in top shape by then

I guess then the first question is if you go back to a version before you started using source control, does that have the same problem?
Then what about the supplied sample projects, same problem there?

  • Adjust standard font (Times new Roman) in an interactive pdf created in Indesign

Could anybody please help me out?
Is it possible (and if so, please tell me how) using Indesign CS6 for creating an interactive form:
    - to choose a font (i.e. arial) and have this being exported as interactive pdf (instead of the regular used font Times Newe Roman)
Thus having users to fill in this created form (interactive pdf) using the (by me chosen) font.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Published to folder iWeb site always using Times New Roman for every piece of text in published site and not showing the original text style used when building the site in iWeb.

    Dear All
Hello from rainy, windy and cold North East England! I need to ask for your help as I'm new to iMac and new to iWeb and it's frustrating the life out of me!
I'm just beginning to build a website for my business. Previously, I used Frontpage, but it's been that long since I used it - I've forgotten half of it and so, I'm using iWeb instead as it's silly to use an iMac for business but a PC laptop for the website design.
I've got the background image I want on the homepage (beautiful image of a rain forest - even if I do say so myself!) and I'm trying to enter a text box at the lower half of the screen, in the centre of the page saying 'click to enter'. I type in the text, I edit it so as to change it to the font style of my company (Gill sans MT) and then I publish the site to a folder so that I can see what it would look like when viewed via the internet. When I do this - the font changes size to a bog standard size of 'so small you need a magnifying glass to read it', it changes colour from black to purple (which looks disgusting) and it changes font style from Gill Sans MT to Times New Roman.
It doesn't matter if I delete the entire site and start again or delete the text box, and insert a new one. I've googled this subject until I'm blue in the face and I can't find an answer - can anyone suggest anything that will help?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Best wishes,
    Sean.

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: If you don't use  Web Safe Fonts any computer that does not have that font installed  will substitute another font for it and change the look and feel of the web page.
So it's safest to use one of those web safe fonts.

  • Times New Roman Font Not Working In PDF

I have created a template that uses the Times New Roman (bold) font in Word 2007. When I generate the report, it is converting the font (and all other fonts for that matter) to Arial. From reading the documentation, it sounds like Times New Roman is supported as a "Type 1" font, so I'm wondering if it doesn't work because the version Word is using is TrueType. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

I forgot to include details about my environment:
    Template Builder is version 10.1.3.3.3
BI Version is (I believe) 10.1.3.2
Also, I'm using the version that is delievered with PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.48, which (based on what I've read) seems to be much more limited than the standalone version or the one delivered with the EBS.

  • Microsoft Word - Times New Roman will not print from my iMac. People send me Word documents, I must select all and choose another font. How can I fix this?

When anyone sends me a Word document via email as an attachment and I attempt to print it out, my printer always spits out a blank page. All Word documents seem to arrive using Times New Roman font.  I must then return to the document, select all, reassign a different font, and it then prints okay. How can I fix this? It appears that Times New Roman font is part of my Font Book, and each version of the font (Italic, etc.) appears there in duplicate.

    harpnt
Open the Font Book again, select the Times New Roman font set.
You'll see the duplicate warning.  Select the fonts and go up to the EDIT menu,
and go down to RESOLVE DUPLICATES.
You might check for other duplicates while you're there, and resolve them.
RESTART your Mac to have the changes take effect.
    Then try your docs again.
    Any better.

Do not use MS Word for Mac, it does not support Arabic.  Instead use Mellel, TextEdit, Nisus Writer or OpenOffice.  Try the font Geeza Pro if others do not work.
What are you using to read email?
What are you using to read powerpoint?
