Font weirdness! Is my iMac possessed?

I added some fonts from work, and coincidentally added another user account.
Now when I use Firefox in either account, all the fonts are bizarre; one is a ding of some sort, another is some kind of foreign font.
And when I use Safari in the new account, I can't get the "normal" fonts. They're not as bizarre as Firefox (they're readable), but they're not normal.
I've tried finding the fonts and turning them off in Font Book, I've tried changing the fonts in the browser prefs, but no luck.
I also used Pacifist, in order to install the original fonts from my install disc without a complete archive and install; it did it, but gave me some error messages:
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/HelveLTMM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/Helvetica LT MM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/Times LT MM._
_An error occurred while writing the resource fork for the file ./System/Library/Fonts/TimesLTMM._
I'd appreciate it if someone with more brains than me could help me figure out how to fix these fontgoblins...

The fonts giving you an error message are hidden in Panther and Tiger. These Multiple Master fonts are used by Preview in particular to mimic the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Not being able to write the resource fork data could be an indication that the hard drive's file directory is damaged. If you have it, boot to your Disk Warrior CD and repair the hard drive.
Along with removing the two bad boy fonts Klaus1 indicated, download and run Font Finagler to clear the system's font cache files.

  • Third-party font-suitcase migration from iMac G3 to iMac G4 Classic Environment

    Hello,
I thought I was all set ... successfully installed Appleworks 6.0.3 in the Classic Environment on my "new" Sunflower iMac G4 so I can still use my 3 macros and 2 custom buttons ... and imported my user dictionary as well. That was last week. (Hard drive on G3 is failing or I wouldn't have made the switch.)
It turns out I am using one third party font, two suitcases: Merriam and Merriam-Webster that the G4 will not recognize even in the Classic Environment. I spent hours yesterday reading about font issues and trying various things but didn't find anything that seems to apply directly to my situation.
I obtained these fonts from Merriam-Webster back in 2003 as part of downloading a trial dictionary.... I don't even remember. It turns out that one of these fonts proved useful last year ... providing an elegant way of making fractions... instead of 1/2, it would appear as superscript 1 over subscript 2 (without going to the trouble of creating super- and sub-scripts)  ... nice in a report where I have mixed fractions for acreage, linear measurements, and fractional ownership in halves, thirds, fourths, and fifths. (In Times New Roman, these combinations look like "azr", "azs", "azt", etc. ). I can certainly go back and manually (no format search-and-replace capability available in AW 6.0.3) replace these instances with superscripts and subscripts in Times New Roman, but I was hoping to be able to make the MerriamIPA font available in Classic. (Another option, to use the fractions available in Lucida Grande, seemed promising, but LG appears to be limited to OS X.)
What I have read indicates that you need to know what sort of font you are dealing with. The Merriam font suitcase looks just like all the other font suitcases on my G3 iMac, the little suitcase icon with an A on it. Inside, there are three fonts, each with the typical icon ... a page with the upper left corner turned down and a letter A on it. The Merriam suitcase contains 144 kb, the MerriamIPA font, 43 kb. The Managing Fonts help file on my iMac G3 says you can use Get Info in Finder to determine the font type. All I see is "font" or "font suitcase" for both the Merriam files/suitcases and several other native fonts.
I copied (using a thumb drive) the Merriam and Merriam-Webster font suitcases to   /System Folder/Fonts    on the G4 iMac. The suitcase displays zero bytes and file type Unix Executable File. I tried copying just the font independent of the suitcase. Same result.  I tried appending .DFONT,  .OTF,  .TTF   ... various font file extensions and was able to fake the system into thinking what sort of font file it is, but could not get the font to appear in AW 6.0.3.
I won't need this after I complete final edits on a 300-page report I have been working on for ten years (replete with drawings, footnotes, tables, etc.) At this point I'm anxious to get back to the edits and be done with migration issues! Hope someone can help.

I gave up on using a different font or figuring out if I could use Times New Roman's built-in fractions visible in Font Book (as unicodes) and did a work-around based on Michael Wasley's tips in this discussion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11622842#11622842
I adapted it however and think it looks a little better.
Font: Times New Roman 12 point
I used the fraction bar in 12-point (Shift-Option-1) for automatic kerning.
For the numerator, I changed the font style to superior (12-point).
For the denominator, I changed the font style to subscript (Shift-Command-hyphen) and reduced the font size to half, or 6-point using the short-cut Shift-Command-<.
When the fractions occured in my footnotes (9-point), I used 4-point in the denominator; 10- and 11-point, I used 5-point in the denominator. This seemed to produce the best result when printing.
    Thank you, Michael.

  • Real weird problem with Imac display

I have a 2 week old Imac 24 inch model, been using PCs for 20+ years, new to Macs, loved it for 2 weeks then had this problem:
Something wrong with either the video display card or one of my kids has got it in a weird mode. This mode is described as:
    1. Any button that one would normally click on (like an "ok" button in any application) has a blue bar in the button that continually "grows" and then 'shrinks' meaning that the size of the blue line in the button changes size within the button, oscillating bigger and smaller. Does this on all applications that have some button.
    2. Open Safari, try to highlight the URL line (address line or whatever it's called). You don't see the line get highlighted like it should.
    3. Click on the Finder button at the top left of the screen, then move the mouse over each menu, some of the text items are MISSING from each of the pulldown menus. What's really strange is that when you keep the menu pulled-down, then move the mouse down into the desktop area, the previously missing menu text reappears for about 0.5sec then the menu closes. You'd expect the menu to close but not for the menu text to appear for the 0.5 second duration, obviously it should be there each time the menu is pulled down.
    4. When in any application the vertical part of any letter, like the vertical part of the letter 'i' in the word island would be red with the remaining part of the letter 'i' being black.
When the Imac boots, the flat panel display graphics look great, I briefly see the picture of me and some other font that looks great, but once the desktop loads you have all the problems mentioned above.
So, I tried setting different screen resolutions but to no avail. What else should I try changing ? Do I have a bad video card ?
    thanks,
    Kirk

    Hi.
Go to System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing and check under Display that the contrast is set to Normal. If that's not the culprit, try creating a new user account and see if the problem occurs in that account as well, and post back your results.
    Good Luck.

  • InDesign CS 5.5 font weirdness

    Hello all.
We have a weird problem here. A co-worker opened a file in InDesign on his Mac and even though the fonts were loaded he was having an issue with the way a heading was displayed. It did not look like the supplied PDF and was highlighted until we went to "preview". We checked the fonts in "find font" and all was well there and peachy.
I opened it on my iMac and loaded the same fonts and it displayed just fine. Even though it was also highlighted, my preview showed fine.
My question is how can two Macs with the same fonts loaded show this particular font, Benton Sans, differently.
BTW, I'm running 10.5.8 on my iMac and he's running 10.6.6 on a tower, if that makes a diff.
    Cheers.

The highlight is what alerted us to the problem. When we checked the fonts in ID it said the fonts were loaded same on both Macs. When I made my PDF the font displayed fine and said all fonts were indeed embedded. It's been through our Apogee Prepress software and the high res proof came out golden.
My worry is two computers, running the same program, with the same fonts installed that are displaying differently.
Were lucky this was only a four pager, on much larger books we got to be realllllly careful.

  • Why are the fonts so blurry on iMac 27 in OsX?

I just got a new iMac 27, my first Apple desktop.
And I'm sorely disappointed with how fonts look. Sort of clumpy and blurry, as if they are mismatched to the resolution of the screen.
I tried a number of sizes, fonts, apps, browsers (Safari and Chrome), brightness settings. Even changed my glasses.
Then I installed Windows 8 in Bootcamp. Perfectly clear fonts on exactly the same hardware!
I am seriously considering returning the iMac as I'm getting headaches.
Before I do, I thought I'd ask here if there is something I'm missing and there is some solution?
    Thanks in advance.

I did call Support, spent 1hr40 with them on the phone, so far have no resolution but the case is still on-going. The only action proposed was to delete the partition and reinstall OS X. This did not change anything.
After the reinstall I captured some screenshots. Unfortunately this forum does not post the images in their full resolution, so it may not be as obvious when you read it:
    On OS X, using Safari:
The same website on Windows 8:
And an article, again first in OS X:
    and in Windows:
    I rest my case.

  • What happened to my old font on my new iMAC?

Recently got a new iMAC to replace a 6 year old iMAC.  I installed the same Adobe CS2 software on both computers.
However, some fonts - Papyrus - for example, that I frequently used on the old iMAC, are missing when I try to view or
use them on the new iMAC.  How, if possible, can I get the missing fonts to work on the new iMAC?  Your instructions
and suggestions would be most welcome.  MANY THANKS!

    George,
I installed the same Adobe CS2 software on both computers.
However, some fonts - Papyrus - for example, that I frequently used on the old iMAC, are missing when I try to view or use them on the new iMAC.
Are you sure those fonts came with the Adobe software?
How, if possible, can I get the missing fonts to work on the new iMAC?
Is it impossible to select the fonts on the old one and copy them to the same location(s) on the new one?
Hopefully, this (counter) question holds the answer.

  • Fonts from my G5 will not be recognized on a new iMac. What do I do to make most of my existing fonts work on my iMac.  Thx

I just got a new iMac (desktop) and need to transfer all existing fonts from a G5. Fonts work fine on the G5 but when I try to install them on the iMac all I see is a blackened icon that won't open for installation. Any suggestions as to what I can do be able to install? Thx, AT

  • Weird clicking sound, iMac freezes or is dead slow, and turns itself off!

I've had my iMac for a good 3-4 years, during which it has been fitted with a new hard drive.
About a year ago, during watching DVDs, there was a weird click-clack sound for a good 10 seconds which was followed by the freeze. Sometimes it would go off, but sometimes the Mac would turn itself off like it had run out of juice. I thought it might've been a power issue.
Nowadays it almost every time presents this clicking sound, and freezing is inevitable. Sometimes there's no warning, the power just goes off. I have unplugged all devices that are using power ie. iPod, but the problem persists.
Could this be a mere power issue? What can the clicking sound be a symptom of?
I'm doing back-up in case the Mac completely shuts down, but I have hope for the machine yet!
I have few months warranty left, keen to sort this out pronto! All comments warmly welcome.
    Anne

As I was making the clone with SuperDuper, the process was halted by an error, and I found half of my stuff copied on the external hard drive. It had enough space, but it prompted a dodgy file in 'Frameworks' in the Library which stopped the process. It all looked very benign, and I checked the troubleshooting and it suggested to try again after restarting.
What in fact had happened, was that ALL my music files had disappeared from my hard drive, none of my applications would work on my Mac, even Safari or iTunes, and I was left last night with the blue screen of death. These files were nowhere to be found, ANY of the hard drives.
    Ready to chuck the piece.
Thanks for all your advice but this time, it made it worse. I'm getting the Mac a new hard drive as it's still under warranty. As it's the third time I've lost my files, there's hardly a scratch on me.. Taught me not to get attached to things too much.

  • Courier 13 font weirdness in Snow Leopard

Since I updated to Snow Leopard a few days ago, I've had several web pages show gibberish or letter dropouts. After quite a bit of checking settings, resetting Safari, and clearing caches, and comparing the settings to my Mac running Tiger that does not have this problem, I've noted that on the Snow Leopard Mac's the "Fixed Width Font" in Safari>Preferences>Appearance>Fixed Width Font box does not list the name Courier 13, as it does on the Tiger Mac. Instead, it shows a "u" with an umlaut in the box where the font name belongs. If I try to select Courier again, I get additional and other weird characters but not the name Courier. If I select another fixed width font, like Courier New, the font lists appropriately and the web pages display accurately. So something is weird with Courier in Safari in Snow Leopard. This has happened on both my Mac's running Snow Leopard.

    Did you restart Safari???
    (I'm looking for the other threads . . .)
    Look around here .. .

  • Air 2.6 and textField with embedded fonts weirdness on iOS

    Hi to all of you.
Im just in the process of trying adobe air to create a gmae on iPhone 4 and i did manage to package corrrectly and intall and make some tests on optimisation with gpu mode on. During those tests, i try exporting a movieClip into a .swc and used it in FlashDevelop. Loaded the thing no problem...That movieclip contains a dynamioc textfiled wich i plan to use to show infos...
Now i add 10  mc (dots) moving from top to bottom in one loop and i use the textfield to show some kind of score points, so i embed numbers in it with a custom font.
now when i click a mc, i add 100 the the score and show the total in the textfield...but at 3500 points, the fps drop to 15 fps, not 3400 nor 3600...
I did many tests, waiting longer before reaching 3500, using one dot mc instead of 10...
The thing is memory in air player doesnt go up...stays pretty much at 2.6 mb - 30 fps but at 3500 gets to 2.6 mb 15fps...will go back to 30 at let say 4200 then back to 15fps at 5000 and so on...
I did not implement any actions at 3500 points...
So i implement a back button wich get the "game view" mc out of the way and stops all process in it to return to the main view ...fps is back at 30 fps steady.
But as soon as i put the "game view" mc on the display list (even without restarting enterframe process that move the dots) it drops to 15 fps...
So this point to the game view mc itself...then i put the embedFonts property to false on the score texfield...BAM! steady 30 fps with 40 mc animated in one loop...no more slowdowns can get to 20000 points and not a single perceptible lag (but of cours i loose my custom fonts in the textfield, showing arial instead)...
Any pointers to the problem? Or advices with textfields, fonts and iOS ?
I use retina resolution and pretty much all is bitmap...
I reuse my instances, use one loop, least possible eventListeners, etc.
Thanks for any help you can provide and thanks to adobe, this is nice to be able to test concept on touch screen. Keep up the good work !

Hi, so it is better to place all my elements with the code and not export a mc with a lot of element in it already placed?
As for the int value, i tought of it since it may be possible that my textfield received a value like 3500.0000000000000000000000000000000000001 and since my texfield is not autosize, i didnt see that...
    Ill give it a try
    Thaks

  • Font weirdness

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and am now unable to change fonts, sizes or styles in Mail. What happened? How can I fix it?

Everything --window, menus, etc.-- looks exactly as it did in Leopard.
However, when I highlight a word to make it italic (for example) it does not change in appearance. Makes no difference whether I use a shortcut or the menu. The menu will show a checkmark next to the Italic style, but the text representation does not change in any way. Nor can I get it to change up or down in size, or from one font family to another.
    My WYSIWYG is busted.

  • Weird Problem, new iMac, can't video chat but can on skype

My problem is simple. I cant share or video chat with my friends on iChat, but I can with Skype. I get a connection error everytime and even being on the phone with Apple trying to solve my problem, nothing worked. I tried changing my port number, and nothing worked. I cant video chat with anyone. Me and my freind were confused because we had just got new macs and 1 day later when we tried to video chat with eachother it didnt work. I tried the appletest03u3 thing and both of us could see the commercial. I'm runnning Leopard 10.5.8 and shes running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. What's the problem?

    Hi,
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall is the Firewall ON ?
If ON, in the Advanced Tab is Allow Signed App selected and IS iChat in the list ?
    Also is Stealth deselected ?
Also try setting iChat Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps
