Fontbook and Font Trouble

Hi everyone!
I'm a designer and I use fontbook for management. I've been using it like this for over 2.5 years and never had any issues. I keep my fonts that I use for work in a separate directory in a different place in my HD and add them to FontBook. I keep most of them off, and just turn on the ones I will be using.
About 3 weeks ago, I noticed all the fonts were active in all of my applications, even though they still show OFF in FontBook. I've tried all the standards: Repairing permissions, checking the FontBook settings and now I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Needless to say this is making my computer super slow. Does anyone have suggestions?

I used the Undoing Font Book instructions. http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/undofontbook.html In the process of re-importing all the fonts. Will see if it works.

FontBook and "Show Fonts" stuck because of bad smart font collection-how to delete/reset?

Hi, I tried to make a change to the "Fixed width" smart font collection in FontBook, to make it find the "Adobe Source Code Pro" font.
Now FontBook and any "Show Fonts" dialog are stuck within 1-2 seconds of launching, especially when clicking on the "Fixed Width" collection.
How can I either reset the "Fixed Width" collection to its original, or delete it altogether?

I have tried to clear my font caches and to remove the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Font* entries but nothing helps. Any idea where FontBook stores its smart collections, so that I can delete them

I had a similar problem where I created a new smart collection and fontbook became permanently frozen regardless of reboots of the application or the machine itself. Here's what worked for me:
Find a new font to install.
With Fontbook closed, open the new font file from Finder by double clicking. It should default to opening the file in a Fontbook sub-window mini-preview.
Click "Install." This should install the font as usual and give Fontbook a new script to replace the frozen loop it was in.
Delete the evil "smart collection."

Fontbook and Network fonts

I work at an Agency with about 30 macs. Currently our fonts are a mess, with different sets on each computer. There are also multiple font managers being used (to each their own). We have looked into network font management from Extensis and the like, but it seems to be very expensive. I read that FontBook could manage network fonts. Is this true? Could we have a single font folder on our network (Xserve) and have each machine look there for fonts? If the server is down are we screwed. Will Fontbook try to physically move the fonts if they are activated by a single machine. I currently use Font Agent, so I am not familiar with FontBook. I'm just looking for an alternative to spending a load on a 3rd party solution.

Be glad to, but start a new topic please since your question isn't related to the OP's (original poster) question on fonts and font management. It's considered threadjacking and isn't considered polite, because otherwise people tend to start helping the secondary question, and the person who started the thread gets ignored. You also benefit from others being able to see your question instead of your query being buried inside an unrelated thread.
That's hard to say without sounding like a scolding. Not intending at all to do that, just pointing out that it's better for you to start a new topic.

Help - Font Book and font Library doesn't work

I've just updated to a new iMac on Yosemite, and Font Book doesn't work. Neither does putting fonts into the "Library"
There is a range of fonts that ARE working that are already in either place, but some (that worked up until two days ago in my old Mac running OS 10.6.8) just won't work.
If I select the fonts in Font Book, Font Book doesn't load them. If I put them in the Library, they don't appear for use in any application.
As a designer, updating fonts is essential, and if this can't be fixed I'm in serious trouble! So any advice welcome!

We see posts like this here all the time. A person upgrades to a new OS, and Font Book suddenly stops working. Usually, the problem is that Font Book's database has been trashed by the upgrade with the very common symptoms you're seeing. You suddenly can't add fonts, and fonts Font Book says are open don't appear in some, or any apps.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
If that alone doesn't do it (it should), then clear out all of the font cache data.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current logged in user account. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.

OSX - Classic and Fonts

I'm having a problem with all fonts I've installed. The only fonts which print properly are the limited fonts which came with the Mac. All others are bitmapped on the screen and don't print properly. I used FontBook and I think they're installed properly. More fonts seem available in OSX apps. (Photoshop 7, etc) but don't work well with Classic 9.2 in QuarkXPress. Any suggestions? This suggests that you have PostScript Type 1 fonts and that you didn't install both the laser and the bitmap fonts. You must have both the LWFN and the FFIL files _in the same folder_ for PS fonts to work.

FontBook is not a serious font manager. I'd not use it. Linotype has a very good, free font manager named Linotype Font Explorer X which works much better than Font Book.

This suggests that you didn't place them in the OS 9/Classic System Folder.
Any suggestions?
1 get and use Font Explorer X.
2 do not use FontBook.
3 you need to know where to place fonts. There are four places where OS X looks for fonts: /System/Library/Fonts; /Library/Fonts; System Folder/Fonts; and <user home folder>/Library/Fonts. If you place fonts in any of those except System Folder/Fonts OS 9/Classic will be unable to see the fonts.
4 I do not recommend using Quark in Classic for one millisecond longer than absolutely necessary. Quark 6, or better yet, InDesign, works in OS X.

KDE 4.4: GTK Styles and Fonts missing [SOLVED]

Hi,
I use qtcurve for kde/gtk uniformity; after the upgrade to KDE 4.4 the styles look fine, but System Settings->Appearance-GTK Styles and Fonts tab is missing. Is it OK ?

This is a common bug and I have experienced it too.

Jagged edges on vector art and fonts on R1900 using AI CS5 in OSX

Problem with the R1900 Printer and AI CS5
I have been using the same printer with CS4 without any trouble whatsoever for at least 5yrs. Beautiful quality prints without so much as itch and great color control...
In October I finally made the switch to CS5 and my printing capability goes to hell.
Quality printing straight from AI to a non-postcript inkjet printer such as the R1900 doesn't seem to be an option anymore...
I get jagged edges on vector art and fonts. I do graphic arts/logos/prints and this is a huge issue...!
Apparently I have to save my AI files as PDFs and print from there, but this poses extra steps, troubles in sizing, colors, page set up...
I mean nothing beats being able to print direct from AI... I cannot understand what the problem is all of a sudden.
At home I have a late '06 Mac Pro running CS4 and printing successfully to a C88 epson inkjet printer under OSX 10.5
What is the matter, please help, this is cramping my style and performance???

Ok this would not be a problem with 10.4.11 on a Power PV Mac but on an Intel Mac running 10.6.4 or running anything above 10.4.11 on any Mac you would need a postscript driver. Problem, there is no postscript driver for this model Printer this is actually a photo quality printer, that is what it does best.
So what to do the best one can do is to save the file as a pdf and print from Acrobat. There is no other way regardless of what one would like and expect.

Next time you accidentally use 3 fingers it will zoom again. Unless you need the feature you're better to turn it off

Photoshop CS4 Extended, issues with resolution and font sizes on Mac

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended, which worked fine on my old 15 inch Macbook Pro, I think it was 2011 and had high definition display.
I now have a new 15 inch 'late 2013' Macbook Pro with retina display (2880 x 1800), and OS 10.9.4
I have 2 problems:
1) Using photoshop now, the resolution is a lot worse than with my old computer, even though my screen is higher resolution.
For example, the images themselves are worse resolution on my display, far less crisp and more pixelated than any of my other programs. And even the windows such as 'save as...' screens are terribly pixelated also. Is there a way to fix this?
2) When using the type tool, I cannot find how to change the size of the font. There used to be numbers which I could change, and also select the font type, both on the top menu bar always visible. Now there is not anymore. What there is there at the top, is what looks to be a bar on top of another bar. The top layer bar is on the left and reaches about one third of the way across the top, and I can drag it by its corner so it can extend more, but not less. It looks like there are things behind it which I cannot see, because it is over the top of them. Perhaps the text size and font options are stuck behind that. What can I do?

Hi JJMack, you said "Seems like you want a low resolution display hook and external display to it." I do not know what that means. I did a google search for "low resolution display hook" and it came up with zero results. Also I do not have an external display, only my laptop.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? I would greatly appreciate any solution.

Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

When I open a new Page document, it always comes in with a default font and font size. I know how to change those settings on the open document.
I want to know how to change the ~default~ font and font size so that a new Page document always opens with those default settings.

Make a document to your liking.
Change the Body style and any other styles in :
+Menu > Show Styles Drawer > click on the little triangle next to Body > redefine Style from Selection+
Capture the page:
+Menu > Format > Advanced > Capture Pages… > Name it > OK+
+Menu > Format > Advanced > Manage Pages… > Delete other Sections/Pages > OK+
Save as a template:
+Menu > File > Save as Template…+
+Menu > Pages > Preferences > General Preferences > For New Documents > click Use template: > Choose > browse to the template above+

How to Include More Than One Font and Font Color Within a Fluid Grid Div Tag?

Using CSS code, I can make all the words within a fluid grid div tag the same font, font size, and font color, but how do I make a few of the words different?

You can style the basic text and heading selectors with CSS:
p { }
h1 { }
h2 { }
h3 { }
h4 { }
etc...
And you can make classes:
.red {color:red}
.highlight {background-color:yellow}
Then apply classes to your text or sections of it using the HTML properties panel.
<div>
 This is a default paragraph style.
 This is red.
 This is highlighted.
 Default style with red, highlighted text and normal text.
</div>
Incidentally, this will work in any layout.

 i need to change the background and font color of a particular row. I am using textview as table columns. I tried to do it using semanticColor property of textview but the font color get changed for the whole column. But i want to change the color of a particular row only.
 If anybody knows please help me(give an example if possible).

In your data source context node (context node which is bound to dataSource property of Table UI elemennt) do following:
If data source node is model node: create a value node under data source node, cardinality 1..1, selection 1..1, singleton false. In this new node add value attribute and set property readOnly=true, calculated=true, property com.sap.ide.webdynpro.uielementdefinitions.TextViewSemanticColor .
If datasource node is value add value attribute and set property readOnly=true, calculated=true, property com.sap.ide.webdynpro.uielementdefinitions.TextViewSemanticColor.
In calculated getter method put your color calculation depending on conditions, like:
return <condition>
? WDTextViewSemanticColor.CRITICAL
: WDTextViewSemanticColor.STANDARD;
Bind new created attribute with property semanticColor of textview.

Problems with Photos and Fonts and Explorer

I am having problems with photos and fonts when my site is viewed on Explorer. The site is Ostyn-Newman.com The problems can both be seen on the start page -though they happen throughout the site. The photo is supposed to be only 30% opaque and it shows fine on Firefox or Safari, but Explorer viewers get the photo being used as wallpaper at 100% and this steps all over the text. Should I give up a using a photo as wallapaper?
Also the font I am using for "Ostyn-Newman Objects for Fine Homes" shows well in Firefox and Safari, but looks really bad on Explorer products. Should I just change the font? I am currently using Snell Roundhand.

The message in each is pretty much the same but he does give some info of an application that can optimize the web pages to make them more readily readable by IE.
